A series of monographs reporting a major phase of the Ohio State Leadership Studies is scheduled for publication during 1956 by the Bureau of Business Research. These are studies of leadership and group behavior in formal organization structures. The techniques described cover work pattern analysis; leader behavior dimensions; group dimensions; responsibility, authority, and delegation scales; sociometric measures of personal interaction; interviewing; and ratings of effectiveness. The Bureau of Business Research has just published Ratios of Staff to Line Employees and Stages of Differentiation of Staff Functions, by AlLan W. Baker and Ralph C. Davis. The study covers 211 Ohio manufacturing companies. Ratios of the number of indirect workers in the total and in each of 16 different staff functions to total direct workers are shown. Analysis of the stage, or degree, of functional differentiation at different company-size levels is made.

This article presents news on various projects and studies related to industrial labor in the U.S., as of January 1955. The long-term projects of the Textile Workers Union of America Research Department are designed to provide basic analysis of the economic and social trends affecting the textile industry in order to facilitate the interpretation of current industrial developments within it. Concerned with a number of significant problems of day-to-day human relations in the plant and looking ahead to the long-term cultivation of better employee relations at both the company and national levels, the Employee Relations Division of the National Association of Manufacturers has in its work portfolio a score of projects designed to stimulate constructive management thinking and action. The Occupational Research Center at Purdue University has completed, or in progress, a large number of projects in the areas of testing and selection, job analysis and evaluation, and attitude measurement. A joint study of unemployment insurance benefit financing in Louisiana is soon to be undertaken by Louisiana State University in cooperation with the Louisiana Division of Employment Security and the U.S. Bureau of Employment Security.

Summary T he present paper describes a study of 470 Navy officers who occupied 45 different types of positions in 47 different organizations. These officers were divided into 120 groups. Each group consisted of all the officers in the same specialty in the same type of organization. In order to avoid the computation of inter correlations among the 120 groups, an iterative method of factor analysis was employed. Eight factors emerged. The factors isolate those groups of officers who exhibit similar patterns of performance. It is found that groups of persons occupying the same type of position tend to fall in the same factor. The factors also reflect differences in organizations, in that some types of positions isolated by the factors are found almost exclusively either in large or in small organizations, or either on ships or in units ashore.
