1. Recyclable Polymer Matrix Nanocomposites for Sustainable Packaging Solutions

Abstract

This study explores the potential of recyclable polymer matrix nanocomposites for sustainable packaging solutions. Nanocomposites were created by combining different polymer matrices (PET, PLA, HDPE, PP) with various types of nanofillers (Clay, Graphene, Cellulose, Nanoclay), and the nanofiller content varied from 2% to 5%. Graphene-based nanocomposites demonstrated exceptional tensile strength (55 MPa) and Young's modulus (4.0 GPa) in comparison to alternative formulations, as indicated by mechanical properties analysis. Graphene nanocomposites demonstrated the most effective barrier properties, with the lowest oxygen permeability (1.0 cm^3/m^2·day·atm) and water vapor transmission rate (2.3 g/m^2·day). The analysis revealed that cellulose nanocomposites exhibited the highest glass transition temperature (72°C) and melting temperature (185°C) in terms of their thermal properties. The findings highlight the wide range of benefits that recyclable polymer matrix nanocomposites can bring to sustainable packaging applications. These include improved mechanical strength, enhanced barrier performance, and increased thermal stability. This underscores their versatility and potential in this field. Additional research is necessary to enhance synthesis methods, investigate new nanofiller materials, and assess long-term performance in real-world packaging scenarios.

2. Sustainable Approaches for Recycling Solar Panel Materials: A Circular Economy Perspective

Abstract

A record number of photovoltaic (PV) systems have been installed around the globe as a result of the shift towards renewable energy sources, especially solar electricity. But the problem of how to sustainably handle solar panels at the end of their lifecycle will inevitably arise with this increase. Using empirical data to provide light on important trends and consequences, this paper explores sustainable alternatives of recycling solar panel materials within the framework of a circular economy. The majority of solar panels are made of silicon, which accounts for 60% of their composition. Aluminum makes up 10%, glass is 20%, copper is 5%, plastic is 3%, and other materials make up 2%. The need for efficient waste management solutions became acute as yearly garbage output climbed from 1,000 tons to 1,250 tons during a five-year period. As far as recycling efficiency rates go, silicon was at 95%, then copper at 85%, glass at 90%, aluminum at 80%, plastics at 70%, and other materials at 60%. Plastics produced 700 tons, silicon 950 tons, aluminum 800 tons, copper 850 tons, glass 900 tons, and other materials 600 tons, all thanks to recycling efforts that overcame obstacles. Based on these results, it's clear that the solar energy industry needs more efficient use of resources and better recycling procedures. Solar energy may be ensured to remain a clean and sustainable source of energy for the long term by using technical advancements, regulatory assistance, and stakeholder engagement to speed the transition towards a circular economy model for solar panel materials.

3. Sustainable Production of Polymer Matrix Nanocomposites for Energy Storage

Abstract

This research investigates the manufacture of polymer matrix nanocomposites specifically designed for energy storage applications with a focus on sustainability. Four kinds of polymers (PVA, PLA, PET, PMMA) were created with different percentages of nanofillers (ranging from 1.0% to 2.0%) and polymer concentrations (ranging from 2.5% to 4.0%). The mechanical testing results showed Young's modulus values ranging from 11.8 GPa to 15.2 GPa, and corresponding tensile strengths ranging from 42.9 MPa to 50.2 MPa. The electrical conductivity tests revealed a conductivity range spanning from 1.8 x 10^-3 S/cm to 2.5 x 10^-3 S/cm. The assessment of energy storage capability revealed capacitance values ranging from 115 F/g to 135 F/g, with charge-discharge efficiencies varying between 91.8% and 94.3%. The findings highlight the capability of polymer matrix nanocomposites to achieve customized properties that are favorable for energy storage. This emphasizes the significance of logical design, manufacturing methods, and sustainability factors in advancing these materials for practical use in the renewable energy industry.

4. Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory sensitivity to heavy Galactic Cosmic Rays and the shape of particle spectrum

Abstract

The origin of Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) and the potential role of Supernova Remnants (SNRs) as cosmic-ray (CR) accelerators remain subjects of ongoing debate. To shed more light on this topic, we have studied the spectral shape of two SNRs, RX J1713.7-3946 and HAWC J2227+610, performing simulations for the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). The previous multi-wavelength (MWL) analysis on these two sources showed an important hadronic contribution at high energies. The interaction of the GCRs accelerated by the SNRs with the medium around the accelerator leads to a process of pion decay (PD) that produces gamma-rays ($\gamma$-rays). These emissions, detectable by CTAO, offer an indirect means of pinpointing the CR source. Two scenarios have been considered: the contribution of heavy CRs and different cut-off sharpnesses ($\beta$) of the particle spectra. The simulations were performed by using different CR composition distributions (protons, CNO, Fe) and different sharpness values ranging from $\beta$=0.5 to $\beta$=1.5. The results show that, in the cases studied here, CTAO will increase the sensitivity to the spectral shape of $\gamma$-rays. This allows us to distinguish protons from heavy CRs and obtain information on $\beta$ values and therefore on different acceleration scenarios., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures

5. Electric field management in $\beta$-$Ga_2O_3$ vertical Schottky diodes using high-k bismuth zinc niobium oxide

Abstract

In this work, we have integrated bismuth zinc niobium oxide (BZN), a high-k dielectric material, in metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) and field-plated metal-semiconductor (FP-MS) Schottky barrier diodes on $\beta$-$Ga_2O_3$. This increases the breakdown voltage ($V_{BR}$) from 300 V to 600 V by redistributing the electric fields, leveraging the high permittivity of BZN (k ~210). Enhancement in Schottky barrier height, by approximately 0.14 eV for MIS and 0.28 eV for FP-MS devices, also contributes to the improved $V_{BR}$. BZN inclusion has minimal impact on specific on-resistance ($R_{on,sp}$). Additionally, the devices display excellent current-voltage characteristics with ideality factors close to unity and an on/off current ratio greater than 1010. This work presents the most significant $V_{BR}$ enhancement reported-to-date for MIS devices on $\beta$-$Ga_2O_3$ without compromising turn-on voltage and $R_{on,sp}$. A comparison of FP-MS and MIS devices shows that FP-MS outperforms MIS in terms of lower $R_{on,sp}$, higher Schottky barrier height, and improved VBR.

6. Monolithic beta-Ga2O3 Bidirectional MOSFET

Abstract

We report a monolithic bidirectional dual-gate metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) fabricated on epitaxially grown beta-Ga2O3, demonstrating efficient two-way conduction and blocking. It features two independently controlled gates and operates in four distinct modes, offering flexibility in managing current and voltage in the first and third quadrants. This versatility makes it ideal for various power conversion system applications. The device operates at a low negative threshold voltage (~-2.4 V for both gates) with a zero turn-on drain voltage and an on-resistance of approximately 500 ohm-mm. It exhibits a high on/off current ratio of 1e7 in all three conducting modes. In the blocking mode, the device breakdown was measured to be more than +-350 V with a current compliance of 0.5 mA/mm. The estimated breakdown field and power figure of merit for the device are 0.35 MV/cm and 1.6 MW/cm2 respectively.

Abstract

ImportanceCurrent measures of alopecia areata (AA) severity, such as the Severity of Alopecia Tool score, do not adequately capture overall disease impact.ObjectiveTo explore factors associated with AA severity beyond scalp hair loss, and to support the development of the Alopecia Areata Severity and Morbidity Index (ASAMI).Evidence reviewA total of 74 hair and scalp disorder specialists from multiple continents were invited to participate in an eDelphi project consisting of 3 survey rounds. The first 2 sessions took place via a text-based web application following the Delphi study design. The final round took place virtually among participants via video conferencing software on April 30, 2022.FindingsOf all invited experts, 64 completed the first survey round (global representation: Africa [4.7%], Asia [9.4%], Australia [14.1%], Europe [43.8%], North America [23.4%], and South America [4.7%]; health care setting: public [20.3%], private [28.1%], and both [51.6%]). A total of 58 specialists completed the second round, and 42 participated in the final video conference meeting. Overall, consensus was achieved in 96 of 107 questions. Several factors, independent of the Severity of Alopecia Tool score, were identified as potentially worsening AA severity outcomes. These factors included a disease duration of 12 months or more, 3 or more relapses, inadequate response to topical or systemic treatments, rapid disease progression, difficulty in cosmetically concealing hair loss, facial hair involvement (eyebrows, eyelashes, and/or beard), nail involvement, impaired quality of life, and a history of anxiety, depression, or suicidal ideation due to or exacerbated by AA. Consensus was reached that the Alopecia Areata Investigator Global Assessment scale adequately classified the severity of scalp hair loss.Conclusions and relevanceThis eDelphi survey study, with consensus among global experts, identified various determinants of AA severity, encompassing not only scalp hair loss but also other outcomes. These findings are expected to facilitate the development of a multicomponent severity tool that endeavors to competently measure disease impact. The findings are also anticipated to aid in identifying candidates for current and emerging systemic treatments. Future research must incorporate the perspectives of patients and the public to assign weight to the domains recognized in this project as associated with AA severity.

Abstract

The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. Abstract

In the present paper, a theoretical analysis of entropy generation due to fully developed flow and heat transfer through a parallel plate channel partially filled with a porous medium under the effect of transverse magnetic field and radiation is presented. Both horizontal plates of the channel are kept at constant and equal temperature. An exact solution of governing equation for both porous and clear fluid regions has been obtained in closed form. The entropy generation number and the Bejan number are also calculated. The effects of various parameters such as magnetic field parameter, radiation parameter, Brinkman number, permeability parameter, ratios of viscosities and thermal conductivities are examined on velocity, temperature, entropy generation rate.

Abstract

Strain can efficiently modulate the bandgap and carrier mobilities in two-dimensional (2D) materials. Conventional mechanical strain-application methodologies that rely on flexible, patterned or nano-indented substrates are severely limited by low thermal tolerance, lack of tunability and/or poor scalability. Here, we leverage the converse piezoelectric effect to electrically generate and control strain transfer from a piezoelectric thin film to electro-mechanically coupled ultra-thin 2D MoS$_2$. Electrical bias polarity change across the piezoelectric film tunes the nature of strain transferred to MoS$_2$ from compressive $\sim$0.23% to tensile $\sim$0.14% as verified through peak shifts in Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies and substantiated by density functional theory calculations. The device architecture, built on a silicon substrate, uniquely integrates an MoS$_2$ field-effect transistor on top of a metal-piezoelectric-metal stack enabling strain modulation of transistor drain current 130$\times$, on/off current ratio 150$\times$, and mobility 1.19$\times$ with high precision, reversibility and resolution. Large, tunable tensile (1056) and compressive (-1498) strain gauge factors, easy electrical strain modulation, high thermal tolerance and substrate compatibility make this technique promising for integration with silicon-based CMOS and micro-electro-mechanical systems., Comment: Manuscript and Supplementary Information
