Context: The rice-wheat (RW) system, spanning 13.5 million hectares in South Asia, is crucial for food security and livelihoods. However, intensive conventional tillage-based practices have harmed soil and environmental health, decreased productivity trends and increased greenhouse gas emissions. Objective: This study aims to develop resilient, climate-smart cropping systems within the RW system, focusing on soil and crop productivity, economic viability, and reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Methods: Over eight years, the study evaluated diverse parameters compared to farmer practices (FP) in seven scenarios (Sc), including one representing FP (Sc1) and six based on conservation agriculture (CA) principles. The study assessed system crop productivity, economic returns, soil quality (organic carbon; OC, nitrogen; N, phosphorus; P, potassium; K contents, bulk density; BD, soil aggregation, infiltration rates, microbial counts, and earthworm density), and GHG emissions. Results: CA-based scenarios (Sc2 to Sc7) showed improved soil quality, lower bulk density, enhanced soil aggregation, and increased infiltration rates compared to Sc1. In the 0–15 cm layer, surface soil organic carbon (OC) and C stock were 63.7 % and 49.6 % higher, respectively, in CA-based scenarios. Additionally, available N, P and K contents in the surface layer increased by 10.2 %, 28.6 %, and 21.8 % under CA-based scenarios. Adoption of CA in intensified maize-based scenarios (Sc4 and Sc5) led to the increased system and economic yields, higher soil quality index (SQI), reduced GHG emissions and increased C stock compared to Sc1. Implications: The study highlights that Conservation Agriculture (CA) practices and diversified crop rotations can address issues like falling crop productivity, reduced economic returns, soil degradation, and increasing environmental impacts in northwestern India's traditional rice-wheat system. However, widespread adoption requires government policies, including C credit payments and guaranteed markets with supportive pricing.

Farmer profit can be increased and air quality improved

Apple pomace and fiber extracted from dried pomace were evaluated for its storage stability. The dried pomace obtained after washing and blanching followed by drying in polytunnel drier (45 ± 8C) was packed in gunny and polyethylene (PE) bags and was stored at low (0-4C) and ambient temperature (13-26C). Storage of dried pomace in PE bags at low temperature was adjudged best and thus preferred with minimum quality changes. Dried pomace stored in PE bags exhibits 4.40% weight loss even after 9 months storage at low temperature as compare to 9.60% weight loss at ambient temperature. Fiber contents (%) were also reported higher in pomace stored in PE bags i.e.; 39.16% as compare to gunny bags 38.98 percent. Fiber contains moisture contents of 15.64% and also exhibited good hydration properties viz., 5.91g/g Water holding capacity (WHC) and 10.33cc swelling capacity even after 6 months of storage irrespective of packaging material and storage temperature. Further, packaging of fiber in glass jars and aluminium laminated bags followed by storage at low temperature shows significant results and thus optimized for storage of apple fiber. Practical Application The utilization of apple pomace for the preparation of products, not only brings additional income but also reduces the environmental pollution, which is a pre-requisite for any new enterprise dealing with food processing industry. Further, apple fiber can be used to prepare low calorie products because of the ability of all polysaccharides to bind water due to their good water-holding capacity. Fibers are known to act as cholesterol lowering agent due to binding of bile acids in the intestine. The fiber extracted from dried apple pomace can successfully be utilized for preparation of fiber-enriched products like acidophilus yoghurt, fiber-enriched mango drink, apple beverage etc. The technology thus would be helpful for the industry for commercial exploration. The present study describes an eco-friendly NBS-assisted regioselective synthesis of new 5-acylfunctionalized 5-acylfunctionalized 2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)thiazoles by condensation of 3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole-1-carbothioamide with unsymmetrical 1,3-diketones under solvent-free conditions. The structural elucidation of the newly synthesized compounds was accomplished using various spectroscopic techniques viz. FTIR, NMR and mass spectrometry. All the newly synthesized compounds were examined for their in vitro antimicrobial potential against both pathogenic gram positive and gram negative bacterial and fungal species as well as anthelmintic activity against Pheretima posthuma earthworms. The results of antimicrobial activity revealed that all tested compounds 3 a-j showed excellent antimicrobial potential particularly against S. aureus. It was also observed that compounds 3 e and 3 i (MIC=62.5 μg/mL) showed greater potency against E. coli, whereas compounds 3 a and 3 h (MIC=50 μg/mL and 62.5 μg/mL) demonstrated better activity against P. aeruginosa and compound 3 i (MIC=62.5 μg/mL) exhibited superior activity against S. pyogenus when compared to standard drug Ampicillin (MIC=100μg/mL). Compound 3 e and 3 j revealed remarkable antifungal and anthelmintic activities. Mucormycosis (zygomycosis) is a severe and often fatal mycotic infection affecting primarily immunocompromised individuals. A 61-year-old female with type 2 diabetes mellitus and end-stage renal disease developed septic shock in association with mucormycosis. Despite antifungal treatment with liposomal amphotericin B, the patient's condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to death within 48 hours. The success of the sodic soil reclamation using elemental S (S°) depends on the population of the native S° oxidizers. Augmenting the native flora of the sodic soils with effective S° oxidizers can enhance the success of the sodic soil reclamation. Present study reports for the first time the S° oxidation potential of the Sphingomonas olei strain 20UP7 isolated from sodic soils with pH s 9.8 and EC e 3.6 dS m -1 . Inoculation with S. olei strain 20UP7 caused 13.0-24.2 % increase in S° oxidation in different sodic soils (pH s 9.1-10.5). It improved the concentration of the Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , PO 4 3- and declined the HCO 3 - and total alkalinity of the soil solution. This isolate also showed appreciable P and Zn solubilization, indole acetic acid, ammonia, and titratable acidity production in the growth media. It tended to the formation of biofilm around sulphur particles. The PCR amplification with gene-specific primers showed the occurrence of soxA, soxB, and soxY genes with a single band corresponding to length of 850, 460, and 360 base pairs, respectively. The integration of the S. olei strain 20UP7 with S° caused 21.7-25.4 % increase in the rice and wheat yield compared to the soil treated with S° alone. Background: Gastroenteritis is a common cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Its cause encompasses a spectrum of agents, including viruses, bacteria, parasites, toxins, and drugs. Viruses account for a considerable portion of gastroenteritis cases across all age groups, typically presenting with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, anorexia, and weight loss. While sporadic cases occur, viral gastroenteritis is more frequently observed in outbreaks within closely knit communities such as daycare facilities, nursing homes, and cruise ships. Therefore, it becomes necessary to determine when healthcare providers should consider this condition in their differential diagnosis and to develop the most effective strategy to confirm the diagnosis., Methods: De-identified data of patients with gastroenteritis were collected over a five-year period utilizing the Patient Cohort Explorer, an electronic health record at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Confirmatory laboratory tests employed the BioFire® FilmArray® multiplex polymerase chain reaction for gastrointestinal pathogens. Out of the 22 most common agents associated with gastroenteritis, only viral pathogens, specifically adenovirus, astrovirus, norovirus, rotavirus, and sapovirus, were included in the analysis. When available, histopathology was reviewed., Results: Among the various causes of gastroenteritis, both infectious and non-infectious, our findings revealed that 25.46% of the cases were linked to viral pathogens. This included a significantly higher percentage of pediatric patients (72.73%) when compared to adults (27.07%), with a p-value of 0.015. Norovirus genogroups I and II emerged as the most frequently detected viruses across all age groups, with a significant prevalence among adults. No discernible gender-based differences were observed. The histopathological findings included inflammation, ulceration, erosion, architectural distortion, and the pathognomonic viral inclusion bodies associated with adenovirus., Conclusion: Our comprehensive analysis of viral gastroenteritis cases highlights the substantial burden of this condition, particularly among pediatric patients. Malaria has developed as a serious worldwide health issue as a result of the introduction of resistant Plasmodium species strains. Because of the common chemo resistance to most of the existing drugs on the market, it poses a severe health problem and significant obstacles in drug research. Malaria treatment has evolved during the last two decades in response to Plasmodium falciparum drug sensitivity and a return of the disease in tropical areas. Plasmodium falciparum is now highly resistant to the majority of antimalarial drugs. The parasite resistance drew focus to developing novel antimalarials to combat parasite resistance. The requirement for many novel antimalarial drugs in the future year necessitates adopting various drug development methodologies. Different innovative strategies for discovering antimalarial drugs are now being examined here. This review is primarily concerned with the description of newly synthesized antimalarial compounds, i.e. Tafenoquine, Cipargamin, Ferroquine, Artefenomel, DSM265, MMV390048 designed to improve the activity of pure antimalarial enantiomers. Soil sodicity is a growing concern for crop growth and development in arid and semi-arid regions of the world. Conservation agriculture (CA) provides an effective solution towards reclamation of degraded sodic lands and enhance the crop productivity. A field experiment was carried out to assess the sodic soil reclamation potential of CA based management practices including zero tillage, legume (mungbean; Mb) rotation, residue (+R) mulch, and subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) for three years under rice-wheat (RW) system. The system scenarios (Sc) comprised of multiple indicators to measure their impact on soil properties as well as system productivity, profitability, water and nitrogen use efficiency. The results indicated that soil pH s under Sc5-Sc8 (CA-based SDI scenarios) was significantly (p < 0.05) lowered by 2.16, 2.16 and 1.33% compare with mean of Sc1 and Sc2 (CT-based system; 9.10, 8.29 and 8.14) at all three soil layers (0-5, 5-15 and 15-30 cm), respectively. Similarly, the exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) was lowered by 2.9, 11.2 and 14.9% under CA-based scenarios with residue management compared with CT-based system (mean of Sc1 and Sc2; 15.2, 17.2 and 28.6%) during the study. The concentration of extractable anions (CO З 2 ‾, HCO З ‾, Cl‾) decreased notably whereas, soil organic carbon and soil solution cations (Na + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ ) concentration were increased under CA based management SDI plots. In addition, CA with SDI scenarios (mean of Sc5-Sc8) proved to be more productive and water-efficient than CA-based flood irrigation (FI; mean of Sc3 and Sc4). Moreover, CA-based FI and SDI scenarios saved 29.5 and 60.7% irrigation water, and improved the partial factor productivity of nitrogen (PFP N ) by 6.8 and 24.4%, respectively compared to CT-R (conventional tillage without residue) based Sc1. The development of automated methods for analyzing medical images of colon cancer is one of the main research fields. A colonoscopy is a medical treatment that enables a doctor to look for any abnormalities like polyps, cancer, or inflammatory tissue inside the colon and rectum. It falls under the category of gastrointestinal illnesses, and it claims the lives of almost two million people worldwide. Video endoscopy is an advanced medical imaging approach to diagnose gastrointestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel, ulcerative colitis, esophagitis, and polyps. Medical video endoscopy generates several images, which must be reviewed by specialists. The difficulty of manual diagnosis has sparked research towards computer-aided techniques that can quickly and reliably diagnose all generated images. The proposed methodology establishes a framework for diagnosing coloscopy diseases. Endoscopists can lower the risk of polyps turning into cancer during colonoscopies by using more accurate computer-assisted polyp detection and segmentation. With the aim of creating a model that can automatically distinguish polyps from images, we presented a modified DeeplabV3+ model in this study to carry out segmentation tasks successfully and efficiently. The framework's encoder uses a pre-trained dilated convolutional residual network for optimal feature map resolution. The robustness of the modified model is tested against state-of-the-art segmentation approaches. In this work, we employed two publicly available datasets, CVC-Clinic DB and Kvasir-SEG, and obtained Dice similarity coefficients of 0.97 and 0.95, respectively. Viruses are acellular, microscopic, and mobile particles containing genetic particles, either DNA/RNA strands as nucleoproteins, responsible for 69,53,743 deaths till the year 2023. Curcumin and related compounds are among the areas of pivotal interest for researchers because of their versatile pharmacological profile. Chemically known as diferuloylmethane, which is a main constituent of turmeric along with demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin, they have a broad spectrum of antiviral activity against viruses such as human immunodeficiency virus, herpes simplex virus, influenza virus (Avian influenza) and Hepatitis C virus HIV. The possible role of curcumin as an antiviral agent may be attributed to the activation of the 20S proteasome, a cellular machinery responsible for degrading unfolded or misfolded proteins in a ubiquitin-independent manner. Increasing soil and underground water salinization with decreasing availability of fresh water has become a potential threat to sustainable crop production in arid and semi-arid areas globally. Introduction and evaluation of salt-tolerant halophytic crops is one of the sustainable ways to preserve productivity in saline ecosystems. This study was aimed to screen quinoa germplasms under high-sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) saline stress. Thirteen quinoa germplasms were evaluated under four levels [best available water (BAW), 8, 16, and 24 dSm -1 ] of high-SAR saline water irrigation. The evaluation was carried out based on growth, yield, and ionic content parameters along with statistical tools such as multivariate analysis, salt tolerance indices, and correlation. The results showed that the salinity levels of 16 and 24 dSm -1 resulted in increase of chlorophyll content relative to BAWand 8 dSm -1 . The germplasm CSQ2 recorded the highest proline content (163.7 mg g -1 FW) at 24 dSm -1 . Increasing levels of salinity reduced relative water content in plant leaves, and the germplasm CSQ2 showed minimal reduction of 4% at 24 dSm -1 . Na + and K + contents in the plants increased with increasing salinity levels, while the K + /Na + ratio decreased. The grain yield of quinoa germplasms ranged between 3.5 and 14.1 g plant -1 . The germplasm EC507740 recorded the highest grain yield (7.0 g plant -1 ) followed by CSQ1 and CSQ2 at a maximum stress of 24 dSm -1 . Principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation elucidated that Na + content in plants was negatively correlated with all the studied traits except SPAD, proline content, and K + content. The different salt tolerance indices indicated that the germplasms EC507740, CSQ1, CSQ2, EC507738, and IC411825 were more stable at high-SAR salinity, while PCA showed the germplasms EC507740 and CSQ2 as the most salt-tolerant germplasms.

The tannery is one of the leading revenue-generating sectors in developing countries. The ever-increasing demand for leather products in the global market requires converting large amounts of rawhide/skins into resilient non-putrescible finished leather. Only 20% of the raw material is converted into a finished product; the rest 80% is discarded as solid and liquid wastes during leather processing. A heavy discharge of improperly treated solid tannery waste (STW) causes a severe impact on the surrounding environment by polluting soil, surface water, and groundwater resources, posing severe hazards to human and animal health. STW comprises proteinaceous untanned and tanned waste, which requires proper treatment for eco-friendly disposal. Several strategies have been developed over the years for the reduction and recycling of STW for producing renewable energy (biogas and biohydrogen), biofuels (biodiesel and briquettes), construction material, fertilizers, commercial products (adsorbents, animal feeds, proteins, fats, and enzymes), and biodegradable packaging and non-packaging materials. In this review, we discuss various strategies adopted for recycling, reutilization, and reduction of STW in an environment-friendly manner. Furthermore, an overview of the current perspectives toward achieving a zero-waste policy is also presented to reduce the environmental burden using green-clean technology to aid the survival of present-day tanneries.

Thermal Power Plant generates FGD gypsum as by-product during coal combustion. This study evaluates the characterization (spectroscopic and elemental), potentially toxic elements (PTEs) distribution, and environmental risk assessment of FGD gypsum for safe and sustainable use in agriculture. The XRD and SEM analysis confirmed the dominance of crystalline CaSO 4 ·2H 2 O in FGD gypsum. The order of concentrations of PTEs in FGD gypsum was Fe > Al > Mn > Zn > Ni > Co. The residual fraction was the dominant pool, sharing 80-90% of the total PTEs. The heavy metals (HMs) were below the toxic range in the leachates. The Co, Ni, Al, Fe Mn, Zn had low (< 10%) risk assessment code and the ecotoxicity was in the range of 0.0-7.46%. The contamination factor was also low (0.0-0.16) at the normal recommended doses of FGD gypsum application for sodicity reclamation. The enrichment factor was in the order of Al < Mn < Co < Zn < Ni. Mn [enrichment factor (E f ) 1.2-2.0] and Co (E f 1.7-2.8) showed negligible enrichment of metals, whereas Ni (E f 4.3-5.2) and Zn (E f 4.5-5.6) reported moderate accumulation in soil. The application of FGD gypsum @ 10 t ha -1 for sodicity reclamation will develop a geo-accumulation index below the critical values indicating its safe and sustainable use to achieve land degradation neutrality (LDN) and UN's Sustainable Development Goals., (© 2023. The present study highlights the occurrence and the temporal variations of physicochemical properties, and heavy metals in the sludge from sewage treatment plants (STPs) located in industrial (two sites) and non-industrial (one site) cities of Haryana, India. The sludge was acidic (5.59) to neutral (7.21) with a mean EC of 7.4 dS m -1 . Prominent heavy metals present in the sewage sludge from industrial sites were Cd, Ni, and Cr with maximum values of 2.83, 1449.0, and 3918.5 mg kg -1 , respectively. The contamination and enrichment factor better explained the buildup of Ni, Cr, and Cu in the sewage sludge from industrial sites. The pH, total carbon, phosphorus, and other water-soluble anions, viz. SO 4 2- , Cl - , HCO 3 - , and PO 4 3- , were the most important attributes of sludge controlling the binding and removal of the metals with particulate matters during the phase separation in STPs. These attributes explained about 90% of the variation in Cd, Ni, Cr, Cu, Mn, and Zn content of the sludge from different STPs. Sludge from the non-industrial site had a low potential ecological risk index of 74.0 compared to a very high-risk index of 2186.5 associated with the industrial sites. This study concludes that besides the concentration of the heavy metals, the enrichment factor coupled with geo-accumulation or ecological risk index can effectively categorize the sludge. However, these indices need to be linked with bioaccumulation, bioaccessibility, and biomass quality under different agroecologies for guiding the safer use of sewage sludge in agriculture., (© 2022. Cancer is one of the life-threatening diseases accountable for millions of demises globally. The inadequate effectiveness of the existing chemotherapy and its harmful effects has resulted in the necessity of developing innovative anticancer agents. Thiazolidin-4-one scaffold is among the most important chemical skeletons that illustrate anticancer activity. Thiazolidin-4-one derivatives have been the subject of extensive research and current scientific literature reveals that these compounds have shown significant anticancer activities. This manuscript is an earnest attempt to review novel thiazolidin-4-one derivatives demonstrating considerable potential as anticancer agents along with a brief discussion of medicinal chemistry-related aspects of these compounds and structural activity relationship studies in order to develop possible multi-target enzyme inhibitors. Most recently, various synthetic strategies have been developed by researchers to get various thiazolidin-4-one derivatives. In this review, the authors highlight the various synthetic, green, and nanomaterial-based synthesis routes of thiazolidin-4-ones as well as their role in anticancer activity by inhibition of various enzymes and cell lines. The detailed description of the existing modern standards in the field presented in this article may be interesting and beneficial to the scientists for further exploration of these heterocyclic compounds as possible anticancer agents., (© 2023. Subsurface drainage (SSD) has been proved to be an effective technology to reclaim waterlogged saline soils. Three SSD projects were implemented in Haryana, India in 2009, 2012 and 2016 to study the long term effect of SSD (10, 7 and 3 years) operation on restoring productivity and carbon sequestration potential of degraded waterlogged saline soils under prevalent rice-wheat cropping system. These studies indicated that successful operation of SSD improved soil quality parameters such as bulk density, BD (from 1.58 to 1.52 Mg m -3 ), saturated hydraulic conductivity, SHC (from 3.19 to 5.07 cm day -1 ); electrical conductivity, EC e (from 9.72 to 2.18 dS m -1 ), soil organic carbon, OC (from 0.22 to 0.34 %), dehydrogenase activity, DHA (from 15.44 to 31.65 μg g -1 24 h -1 ), and alkaline phosphatase, ALPA (from 16.66 to 40.11 μg P-NP g -1  h -1 ) in upper soil surface (0-30 cm). The improved soil quality resulted in increased rice-wheat system yield (rice equivalent yield) by 328 %, 465 % and 665 % at Kahni, Siwana Mal and Jagsi sites, respectively. Studies also revealed that carbon sequestration potential of degraded land increased with the implementation of SSD projects. The principal component analysis (PCA) showed that % OC, EC e , ALPA, available N and K content were the most contributing factor for soil quality index (SQI). The overall result of the studies showed that SSD technology holds great potential to improve soil quality, increase crop productivity, farmers' income and ensure land degradation neutrality and food security in waterlogged saline areas of western Indo Gangetic Plain of India. Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) is crucial in promoting tumor angiogenesis and cancer metastasis. Thus, inhibition of VEGFR-2 has appeared as a good tactic for cancer treatment. To find out novel VEGFR-2 inhibitors, first, the PDB structure of VEGFR-2, 6GQO, was selected based on atomic nonlocal environment assessment (ANOLEA) and PROCHECK assessment. 6GQO was then further used for structure-based virtual screening (SBVS) of different molecular databases, including US-FDA approved drugs, US-FDA withdrawn drugs, may bridge, MDPI, and Specs databases using Glide. Based on SBVS, receptor fit, drug-like filters, and absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET) analysis of 427877 compounds, the best 22 hits were selected. From the 22 hits, hit 5 complex with 6GQO was put through molecular mechanics/generalized born surface area (MM/GBSA) study and hERG binding. The MM/GBSA study revealed that hit 5 possesses lesser binding free energy with more inferior stability in the receptor pocket than the reference compound. The VEGFR-2 inhibition assay of hit 5 disclosed an IC 50 of 165.23 nM against VEGFR-2, which can be possibly enhanced through structural modifications., (© 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Seabuckthorn ( Hippophae salicifolia ) is a perennial, multipurpose wonder plant, popular for its immense medicinal, nutritional, and therapeutic properties. However, due to the lack of whole-genome-based studies, the molecular mechanism governing distinct sexual phenotypes is still not clear. We employed the high-throughput NGS Illumina NovaSeq paired-end technology to generate whole transcriptome profiles of male and female plants of H. salicifolia . In total, 3.2 million raw short reads were generated with an average length of 150 bp, including 50911358 reads from the male leaf tissue samples and 45850364 reads from the female leaf tissue samples. Clustering of the high-quality reads yielded de novo short read assembly of 50259 transcripts of >100 bp length. The final transcripts were assigned Gene Ontology (GO) terms. The digital expression of genes was studied using the DESeq2 of R package that identified 7180 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the male and female plant samples. Further, 10,850 simple sequence repeats, and 8,351 transcription factors, distributed in more than 85 transcription families, were also mined from the final assembled transcriptome. Next, COG and KEGG pathway analyses were performed to assign biological functional terms to the DEGs. The findings of the present study will provide a valuable resource for gene expression discovery and other functional genomics studies aiming towards the selection of candidate genes for the development of sex-specific markers in seabuckthorn and other closely related species.Communicated by Ramaswamy H.
