Abstract

Background:Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common, complex and heterogeneous reproductive endocrinopathy of females throughout the world. Circulating leptin correlates strongly with obesity, which is frequently associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), Adiponectin is a circulating protein produced by adipocytes. Circulating levels of adiponectin are inversely related to adipocyte mass. Aim and Objective: To Study the Association of Leptin and Adiponectin as a predictive marker in Obese And non Obese Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Patients. Material and Methods:This was a case control study carried out in the Department of Biochemistry with collaboration with the Obstetrics and gynaecology Department. The study comprised of 120 patients with PCOS and 120 controls without PCOS.Each group was analysed for the following parameters as TSH, Prolactin, FSH, LH, AMH, Total cholesterol, Systolic/diastolic(BP), BMI, Leptin, Adiponectin, MDA(Malondialdehyde) and SOD(Superoxide dismutase). The validity of leptin toward the diagnosis of PCOS or leptin combined with these parameters was estimated by Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis at 5% level of significance. Results: In the present study increased level of leptin among women with PCOS positively associated with FSH, LH, TSH, Total cholesterol, MDA in PCOS whereas Adiponectin was negatively correlated. However, there was no statistically significant correlation between the Adiponectin Insulin and the Body Mass index with respect to PCOS. Conclusion:The relationships between leptin and adiponectin and insulin resistance and sensitivity, metabolic syndrome, and BMI in women with PCOS suggest that Leptin and Adiponectin potentially could serve as a marker for disease risk and provide opportunity for earlier intervention if knowledge is successfully translated from laboratory to clinical practice. However, further study of the relationship between adiponectin and PCOS is required before there can be direct application to clinical practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper develops and analyzes a model for hospital location and capacity allocation. Thefocus is on an urban/developing area. The first model is the convectional model and the secondis an improved model with better constraints, previous work in the planning of hospitals and/orhealth centers in a region has been done with less constraints hence is easily implementableand has less administrative load but costs may be higher. This work focuses on developing andanalyzing a model for hospital location and capacity allocation while optimizing a number of objectives, e.g. minimizing cost of establishment and maximizing coverage of patients. The model 1 is easily implementable and has less administrative load hence costs may behigher, prescribed Model has more variables (hence more CPU time) and requires more administrative load for implementation but costs are probably lesser. Abstract

The cross-shore profile and the textural distribution of foreshore sediments of Ganpatipule beach along Maharashtra coast covering two annual cycles are examined. Ganpatipule beach depicts erosion and accretion of the berm, reduction and widening of foreshore widths during the monsoon (June–September) and post-monsoon (October–May), respectively with net sediment accretion during the study period due to the changes in the wave characteristics. A direct correlation is observed between the median sediment grain size and beach-face slopes signifying high wave energy ensuing to a gentle to very gentle slope. The sediments are mainly medium grain size, moderately well sorted, bimodal, very fine skewed to very coarse skewed and very platykurtic to very leptokurtic in nature. The binary plots of the textural parameters (mean, skewness, kurtosis, and standard deviation) depicted a characteristic beach environment of deposition. The study shows that the sediment is concentrated in the environment of rolling and bottom suspension. The study on grain size distribution of sediments could be used to assess the wave energy condition prevailing along the coastal area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A model to study the effectiveness of potential chemopreventive agents that inhibit neoplastic process by different mechanisms has been used to test the efficacy of seven nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitors. Five selective inducible NOS (iNOS) inhibitors: S-methyl isothiourea (S-MITU), S-2-aminoethyl isothiourea (S-2-AEITU), S-ethyl isothiourea (S-EITU), aminoguanidine (AG), 2-amino-4-methyl pyridine (2-AMP), and two non selective general NOS inhibitors: l-N(6)-(1-iminoethyl) lysine (IEL) and N(omega)-nitro-l-arginine (NNLA), were tested for efficacy against a carcinogen, benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P)-induced primary rat tracheal epithelial (RTE) cell transformation assay. RTE cells were treated with B[a]P alone or with five nontoxic concentrations of an NOS inhibitor and the resulting foci at the end of 30 days were scored for inhibition of transformation. The results indicate that all three isothiourea compounds inhibited B[a]P-induced RTE foci in a dose-dependent manner. S-AEITU was the most effective inhibitor with an IC(50) (the molar concentration that inhibits transformation by 50%) of 9.1 microM and 100% inhibition at the highest dose tested (30 microM). However, both S-EITU and S-MITU showed a maximum percent inhibition of 81% and 100% at 1 mM with an IC(50) of 84 and 110 microM, respectively. 2-AMP did not show any dose-dependent response, but was highly effective (57% inhibition) at an intermediate dose of 30 microM and an IC(50) of 25 microM. Similar to thiourea compounds, AG exhibited good dose-dependent inhibition with a maximum inhibition of 86% at 1 mM. NNLA and IEL were negative in this assay. Based on the IC(50) values, NOS inhibitors were rated for efficacy from high to low as follows: S-2-AEITU2-AMPAGS-MITUS-EITU. The data from this study identify NOS inhibitors as a novel class of chemopreventive agents that can be developed for lung cancer prevention.

Abstract

FT (or S-8) jet fuel is a synthetic organic mixture produced using the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process that transforms natural gas to liquid hydrocarbons. Studies are being conducted to thoroughly evaluate the toxicity of FT jet fuel. First, an acute inhalation toxicity limit test was conducted; FT jet fuel with additives was administered via inhalation exposure to rats once for 4 hours at the maximum specified concentration (2000 mg/m3). No lethality or adverse clinical signs were demonstrated. In the second study, FT jet fuel, with JP-8 additive package, was administered as an aerosol and vapor mixture via repeated inhalation exposure to rats for 6 hours per day, 5 days per week over 2 weeks at concentrations of 0, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/m3. A slight but significant effect on bodyweight was observed in males exposed to the high (2000 mg/m3) concentration. In the nasal tissues at the intermediate (1000 mg/m3) and high (2000 mg/m3) concentrations, minimal to mild olfactory epithelial degeneration was observed, increasing with the higher concentration, and with deeper penetration into the nose. In the lung, foci of inflammatory cell infiltration were observed in all high and some intermediate concentration exposure group animals. FT jet fuel is similar to or less toxic than JP-8 in equivalent tests. In addition, micronucleus induction was tested; FT jet fuel does not induce micronuclei, indicating that the fuel is not genotoxic. A hydrocarbon fingerprint analysis of the aerosol and vapor phase of the delivered test fuel was performed.

Abstract

Neurofibromas are benign tumors from patients with von Recklinghausen Neurofibromatosis (NF1) that are comprised primarily of Schwann cells. These Schwann cells are found both in association with axons and in the extracellular matrix that is prevalent in neurofibromas, and in which fibroblasts are also abundant. An unresolved question has been whether cells in neurofibromas are normal cells or are intrinsically abnormal. We have tested the hypothesis that cells in neurofibromas are abnormal and have shown that neurofibroma Schwann cells, unlike normal Schwann cells, promote angiogenesis in the chick chorioallantoic membrane model system, and invade basement membranes in this system. In contrast, neurofibroma fibroblasts neither promote angiogenic reactions nor invade basement membranes. When injected into nude mice, neurofibroma Schwann cells do not form progressive tumors. These results suggest that NF1 Schwann cells differ from normal Schwann cells, that they are preneoplastic, and that genetic and/or epigenetic changes in Schwann cells may be required for development of peripheral nerve tumors in NF1.
