Abstract

Guava (Psidium guajava L.) is a widely cultivated tropical fruit crop consumed raw and also in the form of processed products. Winters in Punjab show a drop in temperature, which hardens the fruit. Therefore, manipulation of the flowering season is desirable. Hence, the present study aimed to select an adequate combination of plant hormones and branch bending to amplify the quantitative traits in Guava cv. Allahabad Safeda. For combinations, three months for branch bending viz., August, September and October and three plant hormones: Naphthaleneacetic acid, Ethrel, and Gibberellins, with two different concentrations each (NAA@100ppm, NAA@200ppm, Ethrel@200ppm, Ethrel@400ppm, GA3@100ppm, GA3@150ppm were selected. The experimental layout was planned in two two-factor randomized block design (RBD) with twenty-one treatments. In the case of branch bending months, (M1) August branch bending gained ideal values in comparison with (M2) September and (M3) October. Combination of NAA at the rate of 200ppm with August branch bending (T2) gave more pronounced results for almost all vegetative parameters, while amongst plant hormones NAA at 200 ppm (C2) enhanced results for Canopy spread (N-S), canopy spread (E -W), length of internode and days for the emergence of new leaf 0.837m and 0.803m, 14.1cm and 27.33 respectively. Results vividly provide a strong base for selecting a combination of NAA spray at 200ppm concentration and August month for branch bending to uplift morphological traits in guava. Thus, these findings will favour horticulture breeders and farmers in harvesting profitable gains for field parameters by selecting a better combination of PGR and crop regulation measures from the offseason. 24. Comparative evaluation of strawberry cultivars under Subhash Palekar natural farming and conventional farming regimes in Doaba region of Punjab conditions

Abstract

Natural farming, a recent agricultural innovation emphasizing minimal inputs, helps boost crop production. While strawberries are conventionally cultivated, their natural farming potential remains untapped. In this regard, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of Subhash Palekar natural farming (SPNF) and conventional farming (CF) systems on the vegetative growth and yield performances of five different strawberry cultivars viz. Capri, Winter Star, Winter Dawn, Camarosa, and Nabila under field trials in the Doaba region of Punjab conditions. The experiment included ten treatments and was laid out in the factorial randomized block design employing five distinct strawberry cultivars (Capri, Winter Star, Winter Dawn, Camarosa, and Nabila) as factor I, and farming techniques - SPNF and CF - as factor II. The results confirmed the supremacy of CF for vegetative growth and SPNF system for yield and yield attributing characters. Under the CF, cultivar Capri greatly outgrew other cultivars in terms of increased plant height (5.60 and 12.10 cm) and plant spread (14.87 and 23.63 cm EW; 13.00 and 24.59 cm NS) at 45 and 90 DAP, respectively. Contrarily, under the same farming method, the cultivar Camarosa displayed larger numbers of trifoliate leaves (4.80 and 14.50 at 45 and 90 DAP, respectively), chlorophyll index (56.90 SPAD), leaf area (45.84 cm2), and stem girth (2.45 cm). However, cultivar Capri produced the maximum fruits per plant (26.14) and yield per plant (328.53 g), while cultivar Camarosa resulted in the maximum average berry weight (16.53 g) and the greater yield efficiency (0.77 kg/cm2) under the SPNF technique.

Urinary tract infections (UTI) is a broad term encompassing the urothelium's inflammatory reaction to bacterial invasion, characterized by the presence of bacteria and pus cells. It can manifest anywhere along the urinary tract and can have insidious onset which can be asymptomatic bacteriuria or may present with acute onset of symptoms like in case of cystitis or pyelonephritis. This review aims to determine the causation of UTI during pregnancy and elucidates the methods for diagnosing UTI in pregnant women. Abstract

Background: Perinatal deaths due to hypoxia are preventable with continuous monitoring. Cardiotocography (CTG) is standard for intrapartum foetal assessment, aiming to detect signs of distress and intervene promptly to mitigate risk. Objective: To determine the accuracy of advanced intrapartum monitoring system in comparison with electronic CTG in tracking of non-reassuring foetal symptoms by pattern analysis of the FHR. Materials and methods: A single-centre, observation study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital from January 2020 to December 2021. CTG and an advanced portable intrapartum monitoring system (KEYAR) were applied simultaneously to all participants. Twenty-minute-long recording traces were obtained from both devices. Mode of delivery was noted for all patients along with Apgar score at 1 minute and 5 minutes. Results: The final study cohort was constituted by 94 participants. Most participants (57.4%) were primigravida. The mean (95% CI) sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of KEYAR tracing were 33% (9.6, 70), 97.7% (92.09, 99.37), 50% (15, 85) and 95.5% (89.12, 98.26), respectively. The overall, diagnostic accuracy of KEYAR was 93.6% (86.77, 97.04). Abstract

Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI)/Premature ovarian failure (POF)/Early menopause/Premature menopause is the cessation of ovarian function in women before 40 years of age. POI is characterized by menstrual disturbance (amenorrhoea or oligomenorrhoea) with raised follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels >25 IU/L and low estradiol < 10pg/ml. POI accounts for one percent of infertility cases in females. Although the aetiology of POI is heterogeneous, the cause remains unknown in most patients. The various aetiologies given include genetic abnormalities, metabolic disorders, autoimmunity, iatrogenic, infection, and environmental factors. Ovarian insufficiency is uncommon in adolescent girls and typically results from chromosomal abnormalities, autoimmune factors, or post-cancer treatment. Recognizing POI in teens who present with amenorrhoea or oligomenorrhoea is vital to provide appropriate endocrine, gynaecologic, and reproductive care and counselling. Early diagnosis of POI facilitates the individualization of therapy and the option of fertility preservation at the stage when oocytes are still present in the ovarian follicles. Abstract

A marker-assisted backcrossing program initiated to transfer leaf rust resistance gene LrTrk from Triticum turgidum cv. Trinakria to hexaploid wheat variety HD2932 cotransferred a stripe rust resistance gene, YrTrk, along with LrTrk. The cross of hexaploid recurrent parent HD2932 with tetraploid donor parent Trinakria produced pentaploid F1 plants. F1s were backcrossed with recurrent parent HD2932 to produce BC1F1 generation. Foreground and background selection was conducted in each backcross generation to identify plants for backcrossing or selfing. While foreground selection for LrTrk was carried out with linked and validated molecular marker Xgwm234, for background selection, 86 polymorphic SSR markers from the A and B genomes were used. Single selected plants from BC1F1 and BC2F1 generations backcrossed and selfed to produce BC2F1and BC2F2 generations, respectively. Background selection resulted in 83.72%, 91.86%, and 98.25% of RPG recovery in BC1F1, BC2F1, and BC2F2 generations, respectively. A total of 27 plants with LrTrk in homozygous state were identified in BC2F2 generation and selfed to produce 27 BC2F3 NILs. All the NILs were tested for leaf and stripe rust resistance at the seedling stage using seven Puccinia triticina and one Puccinia striiformis f.sp. tritici rust pathotypes. All the 27 NILs were found to be resistant to both leaf and stripe rust pathotypes. So, these NILs are designated to carry leaf and stripe rust resistance genes LrTrk/YrTrk.
