5. Adorno's 'Philosophy of Modern Music' : music in the age of mechanical reproduction

Abstract

Theodor Adorno's depiction of Stravinsky and Schoenberg in the Philosophy of Modern Music has been a source of much controversy. Many have criticised the Frankfurt Scholar for his biased portrayals. A common tendency shared among commentators has been to interpret Adorno's text literally. Yet upon closer examination, one sees that Adorno's intention was to write not only a literal text, but also a poetic text. Following in the tradition of Karl Kraus, and Walter Benjamin, Adorno's text is laden with symbols, metaphors, allusions and allegories that encircle socio-cultural and historical issues. Stravinsky and Schoenberg are often caricatures, and their works a means to discuss kitsch and avant-garde art during the rise of fascism in Germany. Even Adorno's portrayal of art in Germany is symbolic; his insights into state capitalist culture during World-War Two are meant to act as an acidic and prophetic analysis of monopoly capitalist culture in the post-World-War II era. Adorno's Philosophy of Modern Music was meant to be a Flaschenpost, a 'message in a bottle', designed to remain rebarbative through time. This thesis suggests that when one applies his insights to late capitalist society, they seem more relevant than ever.

Abstract

The Third Pole, encompassing Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) and Tien Shan mountains, has been closely monitored for the past few decades because of its deteriorating environmental conditions. Here, we analyse the spatio-temporal changes in tropospheric NO2over the TP using satellite observations from 2005 to 2020. The highest NO2concentrations (i.e.≥ 1 × 1015molec. cm−2) are found at the boundaries close to the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) and Yellow and Yangtze River basins (YYRB). The analysis of the Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research (EDGAR v6.1) shows that the main contribution to NO2in the region is from road transport (81%) and then the power sector (7%). Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) analyses illustrate that the major regions from which air mass reaches the TP are the IGP, Southeast Asia, YYRB, Central Asia and Middle East. Our analysis reveals a positive trend in NO2over most regions of the TP (up to 0.05 ± 0.01 × 1015molec. cm−2year−1) in the yearly averaged data for the period 2005–2020, which suggest that pollution is spreading even to the inner regions of the TP. Therefore, this study reveals that the inner TP, one of the most pristine regions on Earth, is getting polluted because of high anthropogenic activities within and nearby areas/cities, indicating the impact of regional development activities and socioeconomic changes in recent years.

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at the Regional Research Station (Hill Zone), Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Kalimpong, Darjeeling, West Bengal, during 2019 and 2020 to study the effect of weed diversity, growth and yield of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rose) as influenced by organic mulching and alternative weed management practices. The randomized block design, having seven varying treatments with three replications was used. The treatments consisted of dry weed biomass mulch @ 5.0 t/ha (T1), paddy straw mulch @ 5.0 t/ha (T2), FYM Mulch @ 5.0 t/ha (T3), dry leaves of Schima wallichi@ 5.0 t/ha (T4), dry leaves of Artimesia sp. and Eupatorium sp. @ 5.0 t/ha (T5), hand weeding (twice) at 45 and 90 DAS (T6) and unweeded control (T7). The result showed that hand weeding twice at 45 and 90 DAS (T6) appreciably reduced the total weed population/m2 and total dry weight of weeds than unweeded control plot (T7) at all the stages of crop growth. The highest plant height (82.10 cm), number of leaves/clump (65.41), number of pseudostem/clump (5.17), rhizome length (7.22 cm), rhizome width (5.50 cm), number of fingers/rhizome (6.42), yield/plant (0.268 kg/plant), yield (20.33 t/ha) and weed control efficiency were recorded under the hand weeding twice at 45 and 90 DAS (T6) compared to other treatments. The results showed that it is necessary to cover the soil surface with different mulch materials and manual weed control practices to achieve a good control of weeds along with enhanced yield attributes. Abstract

The steady rise in caesarean section rate is an emerging area of concern in mother and child health care and a matter of international attention, which has been referred as a "global epidemic". MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was prospective study carried out in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at IGMC, Shimla, from 1st May 2010 to 30th April 2011. All pregnant women were categorized according to Robson's Ten Group classification system (RTGCS) 2001. RESULTS: overall caesarean section rate was 21.86%. Majority of the births 35.30% occurred in group 1 and 11.20% in group 2. Maximum CS rate in each group was in group 9 (88.23%) followed by group 6 (79.63%) and group 7 (71.22%). Contribution made by each group to overall CS rate was maximum by group 1 (6.28%) and group 5 (5.26%). Postpartum haemorrhage (Atonic) occurred in 1.60% subjects belonged to group 2,3,4,8. Two had caesarean hysterectomy. Uterine rupture occurred in one (0.08%) subject during VBAC-TOL. CONCLUSION: Robson's Ten Group classification system provides a framework for auditing and analyzing caesarean section rate and allowing comparisons to be made over time in one unit and between different units. The groups with higher caesarean section rate (Groups 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) can be targeted and attempt can be made to reduce and rationalize the rate.

Abstract

Being planar and having many applications of microstrip patch antennas, nowadays these also have applications in biomedical field (for detection of cancer). As EM radiations are hazardous so direct experiments on human body and EM radiation are impossible. So this paper is focused on a breast model to detect the presence of tumor inside it along with antenna structure as a radiation source. HFSS simulation software is used for designing and simulation part. Antenna is resonating at 2.46 GHz in frequency range 2.41-2.5 GHz of ISM band suitable for medical purpose. Two models, one of which has microstrip patch antennas along with breast model without tumor and the other with tumor, are designed and simulated, and their radiation properties are compared. For cancer detection near E-field results are important, so near Efield plots for both models are shown in this paper. The differences in these results of two models can be used to diagnose tumor. Abstract

In this communication, the design and performance of strip line feed U-shaped printed monopole antenna for Bluetooth/WI-Max/WLAN communications systems is reported. Proposed monopole antenna has an eight shaped slot on the patch and an eight shaped ring structure in the ground plane with metallic reflector just beneath the radiating element. The CST Microwave Studio 2014 is used for the simulation analysis of antennas while measurements are performed by applying Vector Network Analyzer. This radiating structure provides triple broad impedance bandwidths i.e. 265MHz (in 2.280 GHz to 2.545 GHz frequency range), 116 MHz (in 2.660 GHz to 2.776 GHz frequency range) and 2.12 GHz (in 3.83 GHz to 5.956 GHz frequency range), wider 3dB axial ratio bandwidth 1.33 GHz (in 4.69GHz to 6.02GHz range), flat gain (with maximum gain close to 5.56 (dBi) and good radiation patterns in the desired frequency range. This antenna may be a useful structure for 2.45GHz Bluetooth communication band as well as in WLAN and Wi-Max communications bands.

Abstract

This paper exhibits the design and performance of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed triple notched band ultra-wide band (UWB) antenna. Proposed prototype has two U-shaped slots on the patch and an inverted U slot in feed line with a metal reflector beneath the radiating element. Proposed structure renders wider impedance bandwidth extended between frequencies 2.71GHz to 12.92 GHz for VSWR < 2 with three rejection bands in the frequency ranges 3.456 to 3.988 GHz (WI-MAX IEEE 802.16), 5.27 to 6.032 GHz (WLAN IEEE 802.11 a/h/j/n) and 7.88 to 8.65 GHz (X-band down link satellite system) for VSWR > 2. The utmost simulated gain of proposed antenna with reflector is close to 9.9dBi at 7.4GHz. A sharp reduction observed in the efficiency values of the proposed structure at stop bands. Perhaps, this structure proved as a useful tool for various applications in modern communication systems including UWB.
