6. Growing Media pH and Nutrient Concentrations for Fostering the Propagation and Production of Lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.).

Abstract

The lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.), recognized for its nutritional value and adaptability to cold climates, faces cultivation challenges, particularly in soil pH and fertility optimization. In a greenhouse study, lingonberry transplants were grown in media with pH levels of 6.5 (3:1:1 PRO-MIX BX/peat moss/perlite) and 5.2 (2:1 peat moss/perlite). Seven months post-exposure to different media pH, various fertility treatments (NPK) were tested, including a control (0–0–0), a balanced 5–5–5 kg ha−1 rate, a standard 36–24–48 kg ha−1 rate, and both higher (up to 54–36–72 kg ha−1) and lower (down to 9–6–12 kg ha−1) rates, applied every three weeks for fifteen weeks across six replications with a standard micronutrient rate. Results showed that media pH significantly affected plant height and volume, with plants at pH 6.5 growing 27% taller and larger than plants at pH 5.2. Fertility levels influenced plant volume, peaking at a moderate fertility rate (18–12–24 kg ha−1) before declining at higher rates. Interactions between pH and fertility significantly impacted shoot biomass, where higher fertility rates (above 36–24–48 kg ha−1) had a more pronounced negative effect on shoot biomass at pH 6.5 compared to pH 5.2. Root dry biomass was consistently 1.2–2.3 times greater than shoot dry biomass and less influenced by the treatments. Shoot death rates increased sharply at fertility rates above 18–12–24 kg ha−1, peaking at 21–35%. Nitrogen concentration in shoots and roots increased with higher fertilizer rates, peaking at 1.74% in the 45–30–60 kg ha−1 treatment. Fertility treatments raised growing media's electrical conductivity (EC, 1:20 ratio), with a maximum of 1.41 dS m−1 in the 54–36–72 kg ha−1 treatment, though pH remained unchanged. Growing media nitrate levels increased with higher N rates, while ammonium levels were unaffected. Shoot death rates rose significantly with higher nitrate concentrations, particularly above 17.5 mg L−1, but showed no link to ammonium levels. Lingonberries can survive and thrive across a wide range of pH levels. These results indicate that lingonberries are resilient and low maintenance, requiring modest nutrient levels, and excessive fertilization hampers their growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

7. Integrating Soil, Leaf, Fruitlet, and Fruit Nutrients, Along with Fruit Quality, to Predict Post-Storage Quality of Staccato Sweet Cherries.

Abstract

Predicting the post-storage quality of cherry fruits is crucial for determining their suitability for long-distance shipping or domestic distribution. This study aimed to forecast key quality attributes of Staccato sweet cherries after storage, simulating shipping conditions, by analyzing spring soil, leaf, fruitlet, and at-harvest data from thirty orchards in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada, over two years. A support vector machine (SVM) was used to predict post-storage variables, with pre-harvest and at-harvest data selected by a genetic algorithm. The SVM accurately predicted soluble solids (R2 = 0.88), firmness (R2 = 0.83), and acidity (R2 = 0.79) after four weeks of storage, as well as visual disorders like slip skin and stem browning. Spring soil properties (Ca, Mg), leaf (N, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, B), and fruitlet data (N, Ca, Mg, B) were key predictors. Leaf Ca was vital for firmness and total soluble solids (TSS) prediction, while N in leaves and fruitlets influenced firmness, acidity, and disorders. Leaf Zn helped predict weight and acidity/TSS ratio, and Mg impacted fruit color. 9. Screening Cover Crops for Utilization in Irrigated Vineyards: A Greenhouse Study on Species' Nitrogen Uptake and Carbon Sequestration Potential.

Abstract

This study examines the potential of 23 plant species, comprising 10 legumes, 9 grasses, and 4 forbs, as cover crops to enhance carbon (C) sequestration and soil nitrogen (N) in vineyards. After a 120-day evaluation period, cover crop biomass was incorporated into the soil, and grapevine seedlings were planted in its place. Among the established cover crops, the C input potential ranged from 0.267 to 1.69 Mg ha−1, and the N input potential ranged from 12.3 to 114 kg ha−1. Legume species exhibited up to threefold greater shoot dry weight (SDW) compared to grass species. Ladino white clover, Dutch white clover, and Clover blend were superior in SDW, total dry weight (TDW), total C content, and total N content. Legumes exhibited slightly higher root dry weight (RDW) than grasses, with the exception of Fall rye leading at 15 g pot−1, followed by Ladino white clover and Dutch white clover at an average of 12 g pot−1. Legumes, particularly clover blend and Alsike clover, displayed high shoot N concentration at an average of 2.95%. Root N concentration in Legumes (Fabaceae) were significantly higher at 1.82% compared to other plant families at 0.89%, while their root C/N ratio was lower at 18.3, contrasting with others at 27.7, resulting in a faster turnover. Biomass production exhibited a negative relationship (R2 = 0.51) with soil residual NO3−. Fall rye, Winfred brassica, and buckwheat had the highest N utilization efficiency (NUtE) values (ava. 121 g g−1). Alsike clover, Ladino white clover, and clover blend showed the highest N uptake efficiency (NUpE) values (ava. 75%). The Readily Available N (RAN) Reliance Index (RANRI) is introduced as a novel indicator for quantifying the extent to which a plant relies on RAN for its total N requirement. The RANRI value represents the percentage of the plant's total N sourced from RAN, ranging from 11% for legumes to 86% for grasses. This implies a substantial influx of nitrogen through a pathway independent of RAN in legumes. Grape shoot N concentration positively correlated with soil NO3− (R2 = 0.31) and cover crop C/N ratio (R2 = 0.17) but negatively correlated with cover crop TDW (R2 = 0.31). This study highlights legume plants as more effective in C and N assimilation during establishment but cautions about potential soil mineral N depletion before reaching their full biological N fixation capacity. Abstract

Spirituality-centered cognitive therapy refers to the way in which people search for and express the meaning and purpose of their lives, as well as experience connection with themselves, others, nature, and spirituality. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of spirituality-centered cognitive therapy on body image, sexual function, disease perception, and disturbing thoughts in women after mastectomy. This was semi-experimental research, which was conducted via a pre-test–post-test method and had a control group. The samples included 85 women with breast cancer who had undergone mastectomy, and, based on the inclusion criteria, 78 individuals were randomly selected and were then divided into two groups (39 individuals in the intervention group and 39 individuals in the control group). The intervention group received eight 120 min sessions of spirituality-centered cognitive therapy, and the control group did not receive any training. Data were collected using questionnaires on illness perception, body image, sexual function, and rumination and were then analyzed by multivariate analysis of variance with repeated measurements using SPSS-24. Before the training, there was no significant difference between the intervention and control groups in the scores obtained by the scales. After the intervention, the mean scores in all scales except sexual function were significantly different from the control group. Therefore, spirituality-centered cognitive therapy may be useful for improving negative psychological symptoms among women in Iran with breast cancer after mastectomy surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Paper presents an analysis of the effects of high-pressure N2 and enriched N2 injection on oil recovery under multicontact miscible and first contact miscible conditions. Phase equilibrium experiments, slimtube, and core displacement tests were carried out at the reservoir conditions to study miscible N2 flooding. Utilizing the phase equilibrium and PVT data, pseudoternary diagrams were constructed to determine the minimum enrichment required for FCM displacement. It emerged that methane vaporization is one of the main characteristics of N2 flooding, and this characteristic amplifies clearly as more N2 dissolves in the crude oil. Moreover, the coreflood results indicated that the oil recovery by enriched N2 injection is higher than that by N2 injection at the early stage of production. Abstract

In this study, a new nano mesoporous MCM-41@SiO2-NH-pydc was successfully synthesised and was used as a new and low-cost adsorbent for the simultaneous influential clean-up, preconcentration and determination of crystal violet (CV) and auramine O (AO) dyes. The as-synthesised sorbent was characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), thermogravimetric (TGA) and derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) techniques. The extraction performance was evaluated by dispersive solid phase micro extraction (DSPME) of CV and AO from real samples. The analysis was carried out by UV-Vis spectrophotometric. The analytical results confirmed that theMCM-41@SiO2-NH-pyd could be an appropriate candidate as asorbent forDSPME. The maximum recoveries (95.95% and 92.95% for CV and AO, respectively) was obtained at 0.015 g MCM-41@SiO2-NH-pydc sorbent, pH = 8.0, 500 μL DMF as eluent solvent, 20 and 10 min extraction and centrifuge time, respectively, and 50 second desorption time. After the optimum conditions, the limit of detection (LOD), quantification (LOQ) and linear range were obtained, 0.0010, 0.0033 and 0.008–0.6 mg L−1 for CV and 0.0056, 0.0187 and 0.03–1.5 mg L−1for AO, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSD) for five analyses were 4.2% for CV and 4.6% for AO. In comprising with the previous reported methods, the developed method provided a relatively in expensive, time-saving and environmentally friendly advantages. Abstract

Grape growers are increasingly interested in cover cropping to enhance long-term productivity while improving the ecosystem health. A wide range of cover crop species for in-row and inter-row use in vineyards were evaluated in two provinces of Canada in 2019. Superior species were selected based on characteristics such as seeds availability and cost, establishment, dry biomass, growth rate, canopy cover, weed suppression, height, host for pest and diseases, maturity date, drought tolerance, traffic tolerance, and risk of being invasive. Among tested species for British Columbia superior species were Ladino white clover and spring lentil for in-row, and ryegrass, fescue, cereal rye, tillage radish, vetch and berseem clover for inter-row. In Ontario, superior inter-row species were crimson clover, pearl millet and yellow clover. Field studies are planned to assess the effect of the superior cover crop species on soil ecology, yield, and fruit quality/composition in the next three years.

Abstract

Soil N mineralization is an important N contributor to crop uptake; however, the soil and climatic controls on soil mineralizabie N are poorly understood. Soil samples from 56 sites across Canada were used to determine the potential to predict the size of mineralizable N pools through simple soil properties and through simple climatic indices and the re_clim indices. Mineralizable N was determined using a 24-wk aerobic incubation at 25[degrees]C. Potentially mineralizable N ([N.sub.0]) was estimated by' curve fitting using N mineralized from 2 to 24 wk, and Pool I, a labile mineralizable N pool, was determined as the N mineralized in the first 2-wk period. Soil properties were relatively effective predictors of [N.sub.0] with soil organic N (SON) and sand explaining 40 and 34% of the variability, respectively. Particulate organic matter N (POM-N) and pH explained 18 and 25%, respectively, of the variability in Pod I. Simple climate normals were generally poor predictors of pool size except for potential evapotranspiration (PET), which predicted 24% of the variability in Pool I. There_clim indices, normally applied to the activity of soil &composers and applied here for the first time to explain soil mineralizable N pool size variability, performed better than simple climate indices and explained up to 26% of the variation in [N.sub.0]. By including soil and climatic parameters in a multiple regression model, it was possible to explain about 63 and 40% of the variability in [N.sub.0] and Pool I, respectively, across a wide range of arable soils in Canada. doi: 10.2136/sssaj2009.0213
