Employing the low-energy effective theory alongside a combination of analytical and numerical techniques, we explore the Landau level collapse phenomenon, uncovering previously undisclosed features. We consider both finite-width graphene ribbons and semi-infinite geometries subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field and an in-plane electric field, applied perpendicular to both zigzag and armchair edges. In the semi-infinite geometry the hole (electron)-like Landau levels collapse as the ratio of electric and magnetic fields reaches the critical value $ +(-) 1$. On the other hand, the energies of the electron (hole)-like levels remain distinct near the edge and deeply within the bulk approaching each other asymptotically for the same critical value. The observation of the Sagnac effect for massive material particles offers a significant enhancement in sensitivity when compared to optical interferometers with equal area and angular rotation velocity. For this reason, there have been suggestions to employ solid-state interferometers that rely on semiconductors and graphene. We investigate the Sagnac effect in Dirac materials governed by the relativisticlike quasiparticle dispersion law and show that the fringe shift is still determined by the mass of a free electron. This confirms that graphene is indeed a promising material for creating solid-state Sagnac interferometers. The present study explores the edge states in a finite-width graphene ribbon and a semi-infinite geometry subject to a perpendicular magnetic field and an in-plane electric field, applied perpendicular to a zigzag edge. To accomplish this, a combination of analytic and numerical methods within the framework of low-energy effective theory is employed. Both the gapless and gapped Dirac fermions in graphene are considered. It is found that a surface mode localized at the zigzag edge remains dispersionless even in the presence of electric field. It is known that in two-dimensional relativistic Dirac systems placed in orthogonal uniform magnetic and electric fields, the Landau levels collapse as the applied in-plane electric field reaches a critical value $\pm E_c$. We study this phenomenon for a distinct field configuration with in-plane constant radial electric field. The Dirac equation for this configuration does not allow analytical solutions in terms of known special functions. The results are obtained by using both the WKB approximation and the exact diagonalization and shooting methods. It is shown that the collapse occurs for positive values of the total angular momentum quantum number, the hole (electron)-like Landau levels collapse as the electric field reaches the value $ +(-) E_c/2$. The interaction of Alfv\'{e}n Eigenmodes (AEs) and energetic particles is one of many important factors determining the success of future tokamaks. In JET, eight in-vessel antennas were installed to actively probe stable AEs with frequencies ranging 25-250 kHz and toroidal mode numbers $\vert n \vert < 20$. During the 2019-2020 deuterium campaign, almost 7500 resonances and their frequencies $f_0$, net damping rates $\gamma < 0$, and toroidal mode numbers were measured in almost 800 plasma discharges. From a statistical analysis of this database, continuum and radiative damping are inferred to increase with edge safety factor, edge magnetic shear, and when including non-ideal effects. Both stable AE observations and their associated damping rates are found to decrease with $\vert n \vert$. Active antenna excitation is also found to be ineffective in H-mode as opposed to L-mode; this is likely due to the increased edge density gradient's effect on accessibility and ELM-related noise's impact on mode identification. A novel measurement is reported of a marginally stable, edge-localized Ellipticity-induced AE probed by the antennas during high-power auxiliary heating (ICRH and NBI) up to 25 MW. NOVA-K kinetic-MHD simulations show good agreement with experimental measurements of $f_0$, $\gamma$, and $n$, indicating the dominance of continuum and electron Landau damping in this case. Similar experimental and computational studies are planned for the recent hydrogen and ongoing tritium campaigns, in preparation for the upcoming DT campaign.

In this short review we pass through the milestones in the studies of the electronic topological transitions (ETT) and focus on some recent applications of the ideas worked out in their classical theory. These are: two-dimensional electron systems, de Haas-van Alphen effect, classification of ETT in multidimensional systems, superconductivity in systems close to ETT, thermoelectricity in heavy-fermion systems, where the cascades of topological changes of Fermi surface (FS) are generated by magnetic field. The history of studies of ETT is inextricably linked with Kharkov school of condensed matter physics, with such names as I.M. Lifshitz, V.G.Bar'yakhtar and many other. Among them is Moisey Isaakovich Kaganov, who contributed much in studies of the role of geometry and topology of FS in physical properties of the metals. Two of the authors (A.V. and Y.G.) had a honor and pleasure to work with "Musik", as all friends called Kaganov; all of us have been learning the niceties of science from his books. "The Fermi surface is the stage on which the drama of the life of the electron is played out" wrote Kaganov and Lifshitz. The detailed analytical and numerical analysis of the electron spectrum, persistent currents, and their densities for an annulus placed in a constant magnetic field (Corbino disk geometry) is presented. We calculate the current density profiles and study their dependence on the inner and outer radii of the annular. We study evolution of the persistent currents and track their emergence and decay for different limiting cases of such a geometry, starting from a nanodot and ending by a macroscopic circle. Our analytical results for the currents are confirmed by the agreement between the integration of the corresponding current densities and the application of the Byers-Yang formula, when it is applicable. Among other results we find the general expression for the persistent current in a narrow annulus, which in the one channel approximation reproduces the well-known result for quasi-one dimensional mesoscopic metallic ring. Moreover it allows to analyze the multi-channel case of a relatively wide annulus. This paper presents a dedicated study of plasma-antenna (PA) coupling with the Alfven Eigenmode Active Diagnostic (AEAD) in JET. Stable AEs and their resonant frequencies f, damping rates $\gamma$ < 0, and toroidal mode numbers n are measured for various PA separations and limiter versus X-point magnetic configurations. Two stable AEs are observed to be resonantly excited at distinct low and high frequencies in limiter plasmas. The values of f and n do not vary with PA separation. However, $\vert\gamma\vert$ increases with PA separation for the low-f, but not high-f, mode, yet this may be due to slightly different edge conditions. The high-f AE is detected throughout the transition from limiter to X-point configuration, though its damping rate increases; the low-f mode, on the other hand, becomes unidentifiable. The linear resistive MHD code CASTOR is used to simulate the frequency scan of an AEAD-like external antenna. For the limiter pulses, the high-f mode is determined to be an n = 0 GAE, while the low-f mode is likely an n = 2 TAE. During the transition from limiter to X-point configuration, CASTOR indicates that n = 1 and 2 EAEs are excited in the edge gap. These results extend previous experimental studies in JET and Alcator C-Mod; validate the computational work performed by Dvornova et al 2020 Phys. Plasmas 27 012507; and provide guidance for the optimization of PA coupling in upcoming JET energetic particle experiments, for which the AEAD will aim to identify the contribution of alpha particles to AE drive during the DT campaign.

The ideal reversible thermodynamic cycle visualization of the Nernst effect in Laughlin geometry, excluding the kinetic contribution is proposed. The Ettingshausen effect is also treated in the fashion using the reverse cycle. The corresponding values of the off-diagonal thermoelectric coefficients are expressed through the ratio of the entropy budget per magnetic flux. We perform a systematic {\it ab initio} study of the work function and its uniform strain dependence for graphene and silicene for both tensile and compressive strains. The Poisson ratios associated with armchair and zigzag strains are also computed. Based on these results, we obtain the deformation potential, crucial for straintronics, as a function of the applied strain. Further, we propose a particular experimental setup with a special strain configuration that generates only the electric field, while the pseudomagnetic field is absent. Then, applying a real magnetic field, one should be able to realize experimentally the spectacular phenomenon of the collapse of Landau levels in graphene or related two-dimensional materials., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures; final version published in PRB

We study the manifestation of the Nernst effect in the Corbino disk subjected to the normal external magnetic field and to the radial temperature gradient. The Corbino geometry offers a precious opportunity for the direct measurement of the magnetization currents that are masked by kinetic contributions to the Nernst current in the conventional geometry. The magnetization currents, also referred to as the edge currents, are independent on the conductivity of the sample which is why they can be conveniently described within the thermodynamic approach. They can be related to the Landau thermodynamic potential for an infinite system. We demonstrate that the observable manifestation of this, purely thermodynamic, Nernst effect consists in the strong oscillations of the magnetic field measured in the center of the disk as a function of the external field. The oscillations depend on the temperature difference at the edges of the disk. Dirac fermions and 2D electrons with a parabolic spectrum are characterized by oscillations of different phase and frequency. We predict qualitatively different power dependencies of the magnitude of the Nernst signal on the chemical potential for normal and Dirac carriers.

An explanation is proposed for the recently observed in optical spectra of monolayer graphene giant increase in the Drude peak width under applied uniaxial strain. We argue that the underlying mechanism of this increase can be based on resonant scattering of carriers from inevitably present impurities such as adsorbed atoms that can be described by the Fano-Anderson model. We demonstrate that the often neglected scalar deformation potential plays the essential role in this process. The conditions necessary for the maximum effect of the giant Drude peak broadening are determined. It is stressed that the effect is strongly enhanced when the Fermi level gets closer to the Dirac point. Our theoretical analysis provides guidelines for functionalizing graphene samples in a way that would allow to modulate efficiently the Drude peak width by the applied strain., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures; final version published in PRB

The recent experimental study of the far-infrared transmission spectroscopy of monolayer graphene has shown that the Drude peak width increases by more than $10\%$ per $1\%$ of applied mechanical strain, while the Drude weight remains unchanged. We study the influence of the strain on the resonant impurity scattering. We propose a mechanism of augmentation of the scattering rate due to the shift in the position of resonance. Using the Lifshitz model of substitutional impurities, we investigate changes in the Drude peak weight and width as functions of the Fermi energy, impurity concentration and magnitude of the impurity potential., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

We review the behavior of the entropy per particle in various two-dimensional electronic systems. The entropy per particle is an important characteristic of any many body system that tells how the entropy of the ensemble of electrons changes if one adds one more electron. Recently, it has been demonstrated how the entropy per particle of a two-dimensional electron gas can be extracted from the recharging current dynamics in a planar capacitor geometry. These experiments pave the way to the systematic studies of entropy in various crystal systems including novel two-dimensional crystals such as gapped graphene, germanene and silicene. Theoretically, the entropy per particle is linked to the temperature derivative of the chemical potential of the electron gas by the Maxwell relation. Using this relation, we calculate the entropy per particle in the vicinity of topological transitions in various two-dimensional electronic systems. We show that the entropy experiences quantized steps at the points of Lifshitz transitions in a two-dimensional electronic gas with a parabolic energy spectrum. In contrast, in doubled-gapped Dirac materials, the entropy per particles demonstrates characteristic spikes once the chemical potential passes through the band edges. The transition from a topological to trivial insulator phase in germanene is manifested by the disappearance of a strong zero-energy resonance in the entropy per particle dependence on the chemical potential. We conclude that studies of the entropy per particle shed light on multiple otherwise hidden peculiarities of the electronic band structure of novel two-dimensional crystals., Comment: 33 pages,15 figures. We propose a characterization tool for studies of the band structure of new materials promising for the observation of topological phase transitions. We show that a specific resonant feature in the entropy per electron dependence on the chemical potential may be considered as a fingerprint of the transition between topological and trivial insulator phases. The entropy per electron in a honeycomb two-dimensional crystal of germanene subjected to the external electric field is obtained from the first principle calculation of the density of electronic states and the Maxwell relation. We demonstrate that, in agreement to the recent prediction of the analytical model, strong spikes in the entropy per particle dependence on the chemical potential appear at low temperatures. They are observed at the values of the applied bias both below and above the critical value that corresponds to the transition between the topological insulator and trivial insulator phases, while the giant resonant feature in the vicinity of zero chemical potential is strongly suppressed at the topological transition point, in the low temperature limit. In a wide energy range, the van Hove singularities in the electronic density of states manifest themselves as zeros in the entropy per particle dependence on the chemical potential., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures; final version published in PRB

We derive a general expression for the entropy per particle as a function of chemical potential, temperature and gap magnitude for the single layer transition metal dichalcogenides. The electronic excitations in these materials can be approximately regarded as two species of the massive or gapped Dirac fermions. Inside the smaller gap there is a region with zero density of states where the dependence of the entropy per particle on the chemical potential exhibits a huge dip-and-peak structure. The edge of the larger gap is accompanied by the discontinuity of the density of states that results in the peak in the dependence of the entropy per particle on the chemical potential. The specificity of the transition metal dichalcogenides makes possible the observation of these features at rather high temperatures order of 100 K. We demonstrate theoretically that the characteristic feature of a 2D system undergoing $N$ consequent Lifshitz topological transitions is the occurrence of spikes of entropy per particle $s$ of a magnitude $\pm \ln 2/(J-1/2)$ with $2 \leq J \leq N$ at low temperatures. We derive a general expression for $s$ as a function of chemical potential, temperature and gap magnitude for the gapped Dirac materials. Inside the smallest gap, the dependence of $s$ on the chemical potential exhibits a dip-and-peak structure in the temperature vicinity of the Dirac point. The spikes of the entropy per particles can be considered as a signature of the Dirac materials. These distinctive characteristics of gapped Dirac materials can be detected in transport experiments where the temperature is modulated in gated structures., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We study a gapped graphene monolayer in a combination of uniform magnetic field and strain-induced uniform pseudomagnetic field. The presence of two fields completely removes the valley degeneracy. The resulting density of states shows a complicated behaviour that can be tuned by adjusting the strength of the fields. We analyze how these features can be observed in the sublattice, valley and full density of states. The analytical expression for the valley DOS is derived., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

New results from MAST are presented that focus on validating models in order to extrapolate to future devices. Measurements during start-up experiments have shown how the bulk ion temperature rise scales with the square of the reconnecting field. During the current ramp up models are not able to correctly predict the current diffusion. Experiments have been performed looking at edge and core turbulence. At the edge detailed studies have revealed how filament characteristic are responsible for determining the near and far SOL density profiles. In the core the intrinsic rotation and electron scale turbulence have been measured. The role that the fast ion gradient has on redistributing fast ions through fishbone modes has led to a redesign of the neutral beam injector on MAST Upgrade. In H-mode the turbulence at the pedestal top has been shown to be consistent with being due to electron temperature gradient modes. A reconnection process appears to occur during ELMs and the number of filaments released determines the power profile at the divertor. Resonant magnetic perturbations can mitigate ELMs provided the edge peeling response is maximised and the core kink response minimised. The linear stability of Alfv\'en eigenmodes in the presence of fusion-born alpha particles is thoroughly assessed for two variants of an ITER baseline scenario, which differ significantly in their core and pedestal temperatures. A systematic approach is used that considers all possible eigenmodes for a given magnetic equilibrium and determines their growth rates due to alpha-particle drive and Landau damping on fuel ions, helium ashes and electrons. This extensive stability study is efficiently conducted through the use of a specialized workflow that profits from the performance of the hybrid MHD drift-kinetic code $\mbox{CASTOR-K}$ (Borba D. and Kerner W. 1999 J. Comput. Phys. ${\bf 153}$ 101; Nabais F. ${\it et\,al}$ 2015 Plasma Sci. Technol. ${\bf 17}$ 89), which can rapidly evaluate the linear growth rate of an eigenmode. It is found that the fastest growing instabilities in the aforementioned ITER scenario are core-localized, low-shear toroidal Alfv\'en eigenmodes. The largest growth-rates occur in the scenario variant with higher core temperatures, which has the highest alpha-particle density and density gradient, for eigenmodes with toroidal mode numbers $n\approx30$. Although these eigenmodes suffer significant radiative damping, which is also evaluated, their growth rates remain larger than those of the most unstable eigenmodes found in the variant of the ITER baseline scenario with lower core temperatures, which have $n\approx15$ and are not affected by radiative damping.

A perturbative hybrid ideal-MHD/drift-kinetic approach to assess the stability of alpha-particle-driven Alfven eigenmodes in burning plasmas is used to show that certain foreseen ITER scenarios, namely the Ip = 15 MA baseline scenario with very low and broad core magnetic shear, are sensitive to small changes in the background magnetic equilibrium. Slight variations (of the order of 1%) of the safety-factor value on axis are seen to cause large changes in the growth rate, toroidal mode number, and radial location of the most unstable eigenmodes found. The observed sensitivity is shown to proceed from the very low magnetic shear values attained throughout the plasma core, raising issues about reliable predictions of alpha-particle transport in burning plasmas., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures; Accepted manuscript

We present the results of the calculations of longitudinal and Hall conductivities of AB-stacked bilayer graphene as a function of frequency, finite chemical potential, temperature both with and without magnetic fields on a base of 2- and 4-band effective models. It is known that the Shubnikov--de Haas oscillations can be observed in the Hall resistivity, although their amplitude is much weaker than the amplitude of the diagonal resistivity oscillations. Employing a model of two-dimensional massive Dirac fermions that exhibits anomalous Hall effect, we demonstrate that the amplitude of the Shubnikov--de Haas oscillations of the anomalous Hall conductivity is the same as that of the diagonal conductivity. We argue that the oscillations of the anomalous Hall conductivity can be observed by studying the valley Hall effect in graphene superlattices and the spin Hall effect in the low-buckled Dirac materials., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures; final version published in PRB

The results of a comprehensive investigation into the effects of toroidicity-induced Alfv\'{e}n eigenmodes (TAE) and energetic particle modes on the NBI-generated fast-ion population in MAST plasmas are reported. Fast-ion redistribution due to frequency-chirping TAE in the range 50 kHz to 100 kHz, and frequency-chirping energetic particle modes known as fishbones in the range 20 kHz to 50 kHz, is observed. TAE and fishbones are also observed to cause losses of fast ions from the plasma. The spatial and temporal evolution of the fast-ion distribution is determined using a fission chamber, a radially-scanning collimated neutron flux monitor, a fast-ion deuterium alpha spectrometer and a charged fusion product detector. Modelling using the global transport analysis code TRANSP, with ad hoc anomalous diffusion and fishbone loss models introduced, reproduces the coarsest features of the affected fast-ion distribution in the presence of energetic-particle-driven modes. We study the thermodynamic properties of the two-component $2+1$-dimensional massive Dirac fermions in an external magnetic field. The broken time-reversal symmetry results in the presence of a linear in the magnetic field part of the thermodynamic potential, while in the famous problem of Landau diamagnetism the leading field dependent term is quadratic in the field. Accordingly, the leading term of the explicitly calculated magnetization is anomalous, viz. it is independent of the strength of the magnetic field. A systematic approach to assess the linear stability of Alfv\'en eigenmodes in the presence of fusion-born alpha particles is described. Because experimental results for ITER are not available yet, it is not known beforehand which Alfv\'en eigenmodes will interact more intensively with the alpha-particle population. Therefore, the number of modes that need to be considered in stability assessments becomes quite large and care must be exercised when choosing the numerical tools to work with, which must be fast and efficient. In the presented approach, all possible eigenmodes are first found after intensively scanning a suitable frequency range. Each solution found is then tested to find if its discretization over the radial grid in use is adequate. Finally, the interaction between the identified eigenmodes and the alpha-particle population is evaluated with the drift-kinetic code CASTOR-K, in order to assess their growth rates and hence their linear stability. The described approach enables one to single out the most unstable eigenmodes in a given scenario, which can then be handled with more specialized tools. A new family of the low-buckled Dirac materials which includes silicene, germanene, etc. is expected to possess a more complicated sequence of Landau levels than in pristine graphene. Their energies depend, among other factors, on the strength of the intrinsic spin-orbit (SO) and Rashba SO couplings and can be tuned by an applied electric field $E_z$. We studied the influence of the intrinsic Rashba SO term on the energies of Landau levels using both analytical and numerical methods. The quantum magnetic oscillations of the density of states are also investigated. A specific feature of the oscillations is the presence of the beats with the frequency proportional to the field $E_z$. The frequency of the beats becomes also dependent on the carrier concentration when Rashba interaction is present allowing experimental determination of its strength., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures; final version published in PRB

A strong spin Nernst effect with nontrivial dependences on the carrier concentration and electric field applied is expected in silicene and other low-buckled Dirac materials. These Dirac materials can be considered as being made of two independent electron subsystems of the two-component gapped Dirac fermions. For each subsystem the gap breaks a time-reversal symmetry and thus plays a role of an effective magnetic field. Accordingly, the standard Kubo formalism has to be altered by including the effective magnetization in order to satisfy the third law of thermodynamics. Alfv\'en cyclotron instabilities excited by velocity gradients of energetic beam ions were investigated in MAST experiments with super-Alfv\'enic NBI over a wide range of toroidal magnetic fields from ~0.34 T to ~0.585 T. Remarkable progress has been made in diagnosing energetic particle instabilities on present-day machines and in establishing a theoretical framework for describing them. This overview describes the much improved diagnostics of Alfven instabilities and modelling tools developed world-wide, and discusses progress in interpreting the observed phenomena. A multi-machine comparison is presented giving information on the performance of both diagnostics and modelling tools for different plasma conditions outlining expectations for ITER based on our present knowledge., Comment: 37 pages, 20 figures

The optical conductivity of quasicrystals is characterized by two features not seen in ordinary metallic systems. There is an absence of the Drude peak and the interband conductivity rises linearly from a very low value up to normal metallic levels over a wide range of frequencies. The absence of a Drude peak has been attributed to a pseudogap at the Fermi surface but a detailed explanation of the linear behavior has not been found. Here we show that the linear conductivity, which seems to be universal in all Al based icosahedral quasicrystal families, as well as their periodic approximants, follows from a simple model that assumes that the entire Fermi surface is gapped except at a finite set of Dirac points. There is no evidence of a semiconducting gap in any of the materials suggesting that the Dirac spectrum is massless, protected by topology leading to a Weyl semimetal. This model gives rise to a linear conductivity with only one parameter, the Fermi velocity. This picture suggests that decagonal quasicrystals should, like graphene, have a frequency independent conductivity, without a Drude peak. We report on first evidence of wave activity during neutral beam heating in KSTAR plasmas: 40 kHz magnetic fluctuations with a toroidal mode number of n=1. Our analysis suggests this a beta-induced Alfven eigenmode resonant with the q=1 surface. A kinetic analysis, when coupled with electron temperature measurements from electron cyclotron emission and ion/electron temperature ratios from crystallography, enables calculation of the frequency evolution, which is in agreement with observations. Complementary detailed MHD modelling of the magnetic configuration and wave modes supports the BAE mode conclusion, by locating an n=1 mode separated from the continuum in the core region. Finally, we have computed the threshold to marginal stability for a range of ion temperature profiles. These suggest the BAE can be driven unstable by energetic ions when the ion temperature radial gradient is sufficiently large. We study the influence of different kinds of gaps in a quasiparticle spectrum on longitudinal and transverse optical conductivities of bilayer graphene. An exact analytical expression for magneto-optical conductivity is derived using a low-energy two-band Hamiltonian. We consider how the layer asymmetry gap caused by a bias electric field and a time-reversal symmetry breaking gap affect the absorption lines. The limit of zero magnetic field is then analyzed for an arbitrary carrier density in the two-band model. For a neutral bilayer graphene, the optical Hall and longitudinal conductivities are calculated exactly in the four-band model with four different gaps and zero magnetic field. It is shown that two different time-reversal symmetry breaking states can be distinguished by analyzing the dependence of the optical Hall conductivity on the energy of photon. These time-reversal symmetry breaking states are expected to be observed experimentally via optical polarization rotation either in the Faraday or Kerr effects. There exist experiments indicating that at certain conditions, such as an appropriate substrate, a gap of the order of 10 meV can be opened at the Dirac points of a quasiparticle spectrum of graphene. We demonstrate that the opening of such a gap can result in the appearance of a fingerprint bump of the Seebeck signal when the chemical potential approaches the gap edge. The magnitude of the bump can be up to one order higher than the already large value of the thermopower occurring in graphene. Such a giant effect, accompanied by the nonmonotonous dependence on the chemical potential, is related to the emergence of a new channel of quasiparticle scattering from impurities with the relaxation time strongly dependent on the energy. We analyze the behavior of conductivity and thermopower in such a system, accounting for quasiparticle scattering from impurities with the model potential in a self-consistent scheme. Reproducing the existing results for the case of gapless graphene, we demonstrate a failure of the simple Mott formula in the case under consideration., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure; final version published in PRB

We study the electronic properties of 2D electron gas (2DEG) with quadratic dispersion and with relativistic dispersion as in graphene in the inhomogeneous magnetic field consisting of the Aharonov-Bohm flux and a constant background field. The total and local density of states (LDOS) are obtained on the base of the analytic solutions of the Schr\"{o}dinger and Dirac equations in the inhomogeneous magnetic field. It is shown that as it was in the situation with a pure Aharonov-Bohm flux, in the case of graphene there is an excess of LDOS near the vortex, while in 2DEG the LDOS is depleted. We carry out a comparative study of electronic properties of 2D electron gas (2DEG) in a magnetic field of an infinitesimally thin solenoid with relativistic dispersion as in graphene and quadratic dispersion as in semiconducting heterostructures. The problem of ambiguity of the zero mode solutions of the Dirac equation is treated by considering of a finite radius flux tube which allows to select unique solutions associated with each $\mathbf{K}$ point of graphene's Brillouin zone. Then this radius is allowed to go to zero. On the base of the obtained in this case analytical solutions in the Aharonov-Bohm potential the local and total density of states (DOS) are calculated. It is shown that in the case of graphene there is an excess of LDOS near the vortex, while in 2DEG the LDOS is depleted. This results in excess of the induced by the vortex DOS in graphene and in its depletion in 2DEG. A new analytic expression is derived for the resonant drive of high n Alfvenic modes by particles accelerated to high energy by Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating. This derivation includes finite orbit effects, and the formalism is completely non-perturbative. The high-n limit is used to calculate the complex particle response integrals along the orbits explicitly. This new theory is applied to downward sweeping Alfven Cascade quasimodes completing the theory of these modes, and making testable predictions. These predictions are found to be consistent with experiments carried out on the Joint European Torus [P. H. Rebut and B. E. Keen, Fusion Technol. 11, 13 (1987)]., Comment: 31 pages, 6 figures

The real-time reconstruction of the plasma magnetic equilibrium in a Tokamak is a key point to access high performance regimes. Indeed, the shape of the plasma current density profile is a direct output of the reconstruction and has a leading effect for reaching a steady-state high performance regime of operation. In this paper we present the methodology followed to identify numerically the plasma current density in a Tokamak and its equilibrium. In order to meet the real-time requirements a C++ software has been developed using the combination of a finite element method, a nonlinear fixed point algorithm associated to a least square optimization procedure. The experimental measurements that enable the identification are the magnetics on the vacuum vessel, the interferometric and polarimetric measurements on several chords and the motional Stark effect. Details are given about the validation of the reconstruction on the JET tokamak, either by comparison with 'off-line' equilibrium codes or real time software computing global quantities.

The latest experiments have confirmed the theoretically expected universal value $\pi e^2/2h$ of the ac conductivity of graphene and have revealed departures of the quasiparticle dynamics from predictions for the Dirac fermions in idealized graphene. We present analytical expressions for the ac conductivity in graphene which allow one to study how it is affected by interactions, temperature, external magnetic field and the opening of a gap in the quasiparticle spectrum. We show that the ac conductivity of graphene does not necessarily give a metrologically accurate value of the von Klitzing constant $h/e^2$, because it is depleted by the electron-phonon interaction. In a weak magnetic field the ac conductivity oscillates around the universal value and the Drude peak evolves into a peak at the cyclotron frequency., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures; v2: to match New J. We calculate the effect of the electron-phonon interaction on the electronic density of states (DOS), the quasiparticle properties and on the optical conductivity of graphene. In metals with DOS constant on the scale of phonon energies, the electron-phonon renormalizations drop out of the dressed DOS, however, due to the Dirac nature of the electron dynamics in graphene, the band DOS is linear in energy and phonon structures remain, which can be emphasized by taking an energy derivative. There is a shift in the chemical potential and in the position in energy of the Dirac point. Also, the DOS can be changed from a linear dependence out of value zero at the Dirac point to quadratic out of a finite value. The optical scattering rate $1/\tau$ sets the energy scale for the rise of the optical conductivity from its universal DC value $4e^2/\pi h$ (expected in the simplest theory when chemical potential and temperature are both $\ll 1/2\tau$) to its universal AC background value $(\sigma_0=\pi e^2/2h)$. As in ordinary metals the DC conductivity remains unrenormalized while its AC value is changed. The optical spectral weight under the intraband Drude is reduced by a mass renormalization factor as is the effective scattering rate. Optical weight is transferred to an Holstein phonon-assisted side band. Due to Pauli blocking the interband transitions are sharply suppressed, but also nearly constant, below twice the value of renormalized chemical potential and also exhibit a phonon-assisted contribution.
