Abstract

A theoretical and experimental performance analysis of a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier - Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (SOA-MZI) photonic sampling mixer used as a frequency up-converter is presented employing Switching and Modulation architectures. An active mode-locked laser, generating 2 ps-width pulses at a repetition rate equal to 10 GHz, is used as a sampling source. An optical carrier intensity modulated by a sinusoidal signal at 1 GHz is up-converted to 9 GHz and 39 GHz. High Conversion Gains (CGs) of about 15 dB are demonstrated for the frequency conversion to 9 GHz using both architectures, whereas up to 4 dB and 9 dB for the conversion to 39 GHz employing Switching and Modulation architectures, respectively. Small-signal equations for the up-converted signal in both architectures are formulated and developed, which permit to quantify the CG from closed-form expressions. The numerically calculated CG values are in very good agreement with those obtained experimentally. The validated equations are subsequently employed to explain the performance differences between the two architectures in terms of the CG. Furthermore, signals modulated by QPSK and 16-QAM complex modulation formats at different baud rates are up-converted from 750 MHz to 9.25 GHz and 39.75 GHz and their Error Vector Magnitude is evaluated and compared. The maximum bit rate that meets the Forward Error Correction (FEC) limit is achieved using the Modulation architecture. It is 1 Gbps and 512 Mbps for QPSK and 16-QAM modulations, respectively.

Abstract

An experimental comparison of the conversion gain and harmonic distortion performance between Switching and Modulation architectures of an all-optical photonic sampler mixer up-converter using a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier-based Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (SOA-MZI) is presented. The process of frequency up-conversion from 1 GHz to 9 GHz is evaluated. Because of their different principle of operation, the Switching architecture demonstrates higher positive conversion gain by approximately 6 dB and 8 dB for standard and differential configuration, respectively, while the Modulation architecture achieves lower harmonic distortion up to 8 dB, depending on the modulation index of the 1 GHz signal.

Abstract

We present a post-distortion linearization technique for a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (SOA-MZI) photonic sampler. The sampling source is an active mode-locked laser producing 12.6 ps-width pulses with a repetition frequency of 10 GHz. The mathematical model for the linearization technique is presented, and then evaluated for the quasi-static regime, i.e. sampling continuous-wave signals, and for the dynamic regime, i.e. sampling sinusoidal signals. A significant improvement in terms of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) equal to 23.4 dB is observed for a modulation index equal to 80% in the quasi-static regime, matching the highest observed THD improvement in the dynamic regime.

Abstract

Fiber-optic transmission of high radiofrequency (RF) signals is being established as a key means for efficiently dealing with the ever-demanding bandwidth, services and cost requirements of modern broadband wireless networks and systems. Implementation of this technology critically relies on the capability of processing RF signals in the optical layer. A Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) which incorporates semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) is an attractive scheme for executing all-optically the important task of RF signal frequency transposition via mixing function. In this paper we present the progress and main outcomes obtained so far on the work carried-out to achieve this goal under collaborative project `Choraal'. In this context we characterize, evaluate, demonstrate and discuss the performance capabilities, limitations and perspectives of the SOA-MZI when it is architecturally configured to realize RF signal conversion into the microwave frequency band. Two different architectures, based on a SOA-MZI acting as an all-optical switch or as an all-optical modulator, are compared.

Abstract

Background: To evaluate the weight loss outcomes of the large US cohort of patients undergoing endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) with or without concomitant anti-obesity (AOM) use. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of adult patients who underwent ESG from seven different sites, from January 1, 2020 to November 30, 2022. Percent total body weight loss (%TBWL) and %excess weight loss (%EWL) were calculated based on baseline weight at the procedure. Medication use was considered if the subject received a prescribed AOM during the study period. SPSS (version 29.0) was used for statistical analyses. Results: A total of 1506 patients were included (1359 (90.2 %) no AOM use and 147 (9.8 %) AOM use). Patients who were on an active AOM at the time of the procedure had a significantly lower TBWL% as compared to patients not on AOMs at 6 months. At the 24-month visit, patients who were prescribed AOMs after the 12-month visit had a significantly higher TBWL% and EWL% as compared to patients who were on active AOM at the time of the procedure. There was no significant difference between classes of medications at any time point, however, patients on a GLP-1RA had a trend towards improved weight loss at 18 and 24 months. Conclusion: In this large, real-world cohort of patients from the United States, data signal that with the use of pharmacotherapy at the appropriate time, patients can achieve optimal results.

Abstract

BackgroundIntravenous erythromycin prior to endoscopy for upper gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) improves outcomes but requires immediate preparation delaying administration in emergency cases. Azithromycin is readily available and does not require prolonged preparation. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of azithromycin in improving the quality of endoscopic visualization in upper GIB compared to erythromycin.MethodsPatients admitted with upper GIB who received erythromycin or azithromycin before urgent endoscopy were included. Primary outcome of the quality of visualization was assessed by two gastroenterologists, blinded to the choice of infusion, using a scoring system ranging from 0 to 8, with a maximum of 2 points assigned to the fundus, body, antrum and bulb.ResultsSixty-six patients were included; 25 received azithromycin and 41 received erythromycin. Mean total visualization score was significantly higher with azithromycin compared to that with erythromycin (6.8±1.4 vs. 5.5±2.2, respectively; P=0.01) and remained significant after adjusting for confounders (Diff: 0.01, 1.88; P=0.05). Secondary outcomes analyses showed a shorter LOS when given azithromycin compared to erythromycin [6 (3 to 9) vs. 8 (7 to 16) days, respectively, 95% CI: 1.03, 3.89; P=0.04]. Time between initiating the infusion and endoscopy was longer with azithromycin (Diff: 40.64 min; 95% CI: 7.23, 74.05; P=0.02). Need for second look endoscopy, procedure time, blood transfusion requirements and procedure-related complications did not differ between the groups.ConclusionsAzithromycin infusion before endoscopy for upper GIB was associated with better visualization than that of erythromycin. Randomized trials are needed to validate these findings.

Abstract

This paper introduces an efficient approach for compact, wideband and supergain arrays design using artificial neural network (ANN) based optimization. The proposed method optimize at the same time the distance inter-elements of the array antenna, its input impedance as well as its directivity. Such global optimization considerably improves the performances of superdirective arrays in terms of gain, bandwidth and efficiency. The proposed method is used afterwards to synthesize a three-elements array using two different unit elements. The comparison of the achieved performances and the Harrington limit reveals that the developed antennas can be qualified as supergain antennas. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a wideband supergain array with more than two elements in the open literature. To validate the results, a prototype was manufactured and measured. The measurements show that the antenna has a wide impedance bandwidth of 22.6%, a peak directivity of 8.3 dBi and a total efficiency greater than 80%.

Abstract

We present an experimental system study of the influence of cryogenic temperatures on the performance of a commercial Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) over the range 240 K – 70 K. Significant performance improvements were observed when the SOA is in cryogenic conditions. At 70 K and 100 mA we were able to measure a gain as high as 52 dB. At 240 K, only 50 mA of input current are necessary to reach a gain of 37 dB, and a noise figure of 3.8 dB, close to the theoretical limit. The SOA efficiency at power saturation, rises from 2.2% at ambient temperature up to 41% at 100 mA and 120 K.

Abstract

In this paper is shown a new way to use Magneto-Dielectric Materials (MDM) in order to miniaturize monopole antennas. It is proposed to load an antenna with MDM to use the relative permeability to achieve the first 17% miniaturization rate. Then, in order to achieve better miniaturization, it is proposed to add metal parasitic plates on both sides of the material to use the relative permittivity to ensure capacitance useful to shift the antenna’s resonant frequency. By combining material loading, metallic plates’ capacitances and matching circuit designed with the real frequency technic, an antenna’s frequency shift from 350 MHz to 200 MHz is achieved corresponding to 43% of height reduction. A matching circuit has been designed to match the antenna at −5 dB. The obtained frequency bandwidth is 15% (185–215 MHz) with a realized gain of over −2.5 dBi.
