12. Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk assessment induced by pesticide residues in fresh pistachio in Iran based on Monte Carlo simulation

Abstract

This research is aimed at analysis 88 pesticides in 30 fresh pistachio samples prepared from stores in Iran by QuEChERS-Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The results showed at least one pesticide was in 67% of fresh pistachio samples. Kresoxim methyl residue was detected in 20 samples with average of 0.11 mg kg− 1, this average is 2.2 times more than MRL. buprofezin in 5 samples with average of 0.17 mg kg− 1 was observed with 3.4 times more than MRL, hexaconazole and permethrin were recognized in 3 samples lower than MRL with average residue of 0.030 and 0.028 mg kg− 1, respectively. In addition, potential non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risk assessments were evaluated using probabilistic methods performed with the Monte Carlo simulation algorithm. The order of pesticide ranking based on HQ was hexaconazole > buprofezin > permethrin > kresoxim methyl. Total HQ (HI) was 2.0E-4 and for children 9.0E-4 hence it means fresh pistachio consuming maybe not have significant short-term health risks for cosumers. Ranking based on CR was hexaconazole > kresoxim methyl > metalaxyl > permethrin > buprofezin. However, total CR due to pesticide residues was not higher than 1E-6 value (1.09E-9) therefore, consumers were not at significant risk of carcinogenicity in this product.

Abstract

This study aimed to detect the prevalence and concentration of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), deoxynivalenol (DON), ochratoxin A (OTA) and zearalenone (ZEN) in yolk and white boiled poultry eggs in Jordan. Two hundred and fifty poultry egg samples were collected from governates of Jordan during six month (March 2017 until September 2017) and then concentration of mycotoxins in the yolk and white of eggs was detected by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS). In addition, probabilistic health risk assessment due to ingestion boiled poultry eggs content of mycotoxins (AFB1, DON, OTA and ZEN) in the adults and children consumers was estimated using Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) technique. The rank order of mycotoxins in the yolk of eggs based on prevalence was ZEN (96.56%) >DON (93.51%) >OTA (90.27%) >AFB1 (78.95%) and in white of eggs was ochratoxin A (97.44%) > deoxynivalenol (96.57%) > zearalenone (73.91%) > aflatoxin B1 (73.26%). In addition, the rank order of mycotoxins in the yolk of eggs based on concentration was deoxynivalenol (1.01 µg/kg) > zearalenone (0.96 µg/kg) > aflatoxin B1 (0.80 µg/kg) > ochratoxin A (0.47 µg/kg) and in the white of eggs based on concentration was deoxynivalenol (1.24 µg/kg) > zearalenone (0.99 µg/kg) > aflatoxin B1 (0.83 µg/kg) > ochratoxin A (0.54 µg/kg). Concentration of AFB1, DON and ZEN in the yolk was not significantly different with white of eggs (p value > 0.05) but concentration of OTA in the white of eggs was higher than yolk of eggs, significantly (p value < 0.05). The probabilistic health risk assessment shows that adults and children consumers are at the concern health risk (Margin of Exposures <10,000) due to aflatoxin B1. 17. Global systematic review and meta-analysis on prevalence and concentration of aflatoxins in peanuts oil and probabilistic risk assessment.

Abstract

Exposure to mycotoxins in food is largely unavoidable, and concerns about their health effects are growing. Consumption of vegetable oils such as peanuts oil has increased, hence several studies have been conducted on concentration of aflatoxins (AFs) in peanuts oil. Search was performed in Scopus and PubMed databases on prevalence and concentration of AFs in peanuts oil from 1 January 2005 to 15 April 29, 2022. Prevalence and concentration of AFs in peanuts oil was meta-analyzed based on country and type of AFs subgroups. In addition, health risk was calculated using monte carlo simulation method. Pooled prevalence of AFB1 in peanuts oil was 47.9%; AFB2, 46.45%; AFG1, 46.92% and AFG2, 54.01%. The Overall prevalence of AFTs was 49.30%, 95%CI (35.80–62.84%). Pooled concentration of AFB1 in peanuts oil was 2.30 μg/kg; AFB2, 0.77 μg/kg; AFG1, 0.07 μg/kg; AFG1, 0.28 μg/kg. The sort of country based on mean of MOEs in the adults consumers was Japan (47,059) > China (17,670) > Ethiopia (7,398) > Sudan (6,974) > USA (1,012) and sort of country based on mean of MOEs in the children was Japan (120,994) > China (46,991) > Ethiopia (19,251) > Sudan (18,200) > USA (2,620). Abstract

In this work, g-C3N4 was successfully prepared using microwave and conventional thermal methods. The physicochemical properties of prepared graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) were analyzed using various techniques including SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR and UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. Thermally and microwave prepared g-C3N4 nanomaterials have been coated onto bamboo and linen fabrics using pad-dry-cure process. The properties of the coated fabrics were evaluated. The colony counting method was used to assess the finished fabrics' antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. Significant improvement was observed. Cellulosic fabric treated with microwave prepared (g-C3N4) shows higher reduction rate. UV protection properties of bamboo as well as linen fabric improved as indicated by UPF Values. Linen fabric treated by thermally prepared g-C3N4 indicated the highest UPF value recorded (47.5). Post treatment of g-C3N4 nanomaterials fabric by stearic acid enhance hydrophobic character of bamboo and linen treated fabric. Abstract

Background: In Jordan as in other worldwide countries, mycotoxins are considered a serious national problem in food supplies. As a result, almost all nations are setting and adopting different regulations targeting the control of mycotoxins levels in the domestic food supply, including the problem of reliable sampling and analysis methods. Objective: It is necessary to improve and give evidence of analytical abilities of laboratories within Jordan and developing countries enabling them to monitor mycotoxins effectively in food to overcome non-tariff obstacles. Methods: We analyzed 40 samples from wheat, corn, dried fig and dried coffee beans for total aflatoxin content using High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Enzyme Linked Immunesorbent Assay (ELISA) methods. Results: 40% of samples from wheat, 60% from corn, 30% from dried fig, and 50% from dried coffee beans were found positive when speaking of total aflatoxins, with average values between 1.14 and 4.12 μg/kg. Obtained results allow considering all tested food samples as fit for human consumption if compared with the labeled regulatory limit of allowed aflatoxins in the European Union. In detail, the limit of detection and the limit of quantification for methods used in this study were significantly lower than the maximum limits established by the European Union. Highlights: The procedure used in this study is suitable for detection of mycotoxins at very low concentration.

Abstract

PurposeThe purpose of this study comes from the need of defining improved durability values and the realization of a good traceability management for selected vegan cheeses has suggested the comparison between a processed cheese and its analogous version without animal-origin raw materials. The durability should be studied at a well-defined temperature, probably agreed among the food producer and the food processor. In addition, the traceability system should consider many components and related suppliers.Design/methodology/approachA supply chain risk assessment analysis has been carried out with relation to two different products: an analogue cheese and a vegan cheese-like preparation. Raw materials and ingredients have been evaluated (production method and origin; geographical identification), with the aim of identifying simplified food.FindingsAn assessment of food supply networks has been carried out. In the first situation (analogue cheeses), the ingredient “cheeses” shows an important complexity: five suppliers with a related six-interconnection hub. On the other side, vegan cheeses are obtained from 11 ingredients (a challenging hub); four of them may be produced from 2–5 components of different origin (five total hubs). Tested processed cheeses are represented by means of a linear food supply network with two hubs (cheeses and “arrival” show degrees 6 and 9, respectively). Networks concerning vegan cheeses include five different hubs: four complex raw materials (degree: 2, 3, 4 and 5) and the “arrival” step (degree: 12).Originality/valueThe information load of vegan cheeses (two hubs, degrees >> average degree) appears high if compared with processed cheeses (two hubs), although the complexity of networks appears similar. Vegan cheeses may seem technologically simpler than processed cheeses and be sometimes questioned because of important traceability issues. Adequate traceability countermeasures in terms of preventive monitoring actions should be recommended when speaking of vegan cheeses. Anyway, a centralized manager would be always required.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of herd management practices on milk quality according to somatic cell count (SCC), standard plate count (SPC) and electrical conductivity (EC). The experimental work was carried out at El-Bayoumi dairy farms in Gamasa, Dakahlia Governorate at 2016. Managing cows parity, cows cleanliness score, stocking rate, feeding regime, stage of lactation, daily milk level and milking shift had a higher significant effect on milk hygiene (SCC, SPC and EC) whereas old cows, dirty body cows, overstocked cows, winter and summer feeding regime, higher yielders cows, early and last lactation cows and mid night milking shift had a very poor quality milk (high in somatic cell count, high in Standard plate count and high in Electrical conductivity.

Abstract

Aims: This international study aimed to assess: 1) the prevalence of preoperative and postoperative COVID-19 among patients with hip fracture, 2) the effect on 30-day mortality, and 3) clinical factors associated with the infection and with mortality in COVID-19-positive patients. Methods: A multicentre collaboration among 112 centres in 14 countries collected data on all patients presenting with a hip fracture between 1st March-31st May 2020. Demographics, residence, place of injury, presentation blood tests, Nottingham Hip Fracture Score, time to surgery, management, ASA grade, length of stay, COVID-19 and 30-day mortality status were recorded. Results: A total of 7090 patients were included, with a mean age of 82.2 (range 50–104) years and 4959 (69.9%) being female. Of 651 (9.2%) patients diagnosed with COVID-19, 225 (34.6%) were positive at presentation and 426 (65.4%) were positive postoperatively. Positive COVID-19 status was independently associated with male sex (odds ratio (OR) 1.38, p = 0.001), residential care (OR 2.15, p < 0.001), inpatient fall (OR 2.23, p = 0.003), cancer (OR 0.63, p = 0.009), ASA grades 4 (OR 1.59, p = 0.008) or 5 (OR 8.28, p < 0.001), and longer admission (OR 1.06 for each increasing day, p < 0.001). Patients with COVID-19 at any time had a significantly lower chance of 30-day survival versus those without COVID-19 (72.7% versus 92.6%, p < 0.001). COVID-19 was independently associated with an increased 30-day mortality risk (hazard ratio (HR) 2.83, p < 0.001). Increasing age (HR 1.03, p = 0.028), male sex (HR 2.35, p < 0.001), renal disease (HR 1.53, p = 0.017), and pulmonary disease (HR 1.45, p = 0.039) were independently associated with a higher 30-day mortality risk in patients with COVID-19 when adjusting for confounders. Conclusion: The prevalence of COVID-19 in hip fracture patients during the first wave of the pandemic was 9%, and was independently associated with a three-fold increased 30-day mortality risk.

Abstract

The incidence of contamination of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in milk samples collected from the Jordanian market was investigated by using the competitive enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique. A total of 175 samples were collected during 2014-2015. All tested samples were contaminated with various levels of AFM1 ranging from 9.71 to 288.68 ng/kg. The concentration of AFM1 in 66% of fresh milk samples was higher than the maximum tolerance limit accepted by the European Union (50 ng/kg) and 23% higher than the maximum tolerance limit accepted by the US (500 ng/kg). Percentages of contaminated raw cow, sheep, goat and camel milk exceeding the European tolerance limit were 60, 85, 75 and 0%, respectively. Of AFM1 contaminated pasteurised cow milk samples, 12% exceeded the European tolerance limit with a range of contamination between 14.60 and 216.78 ng/kg. For infant formula samples, the average concentration of AFM1 was 120.26 ng/kg (range from 16.55 to 288.68 ng/kg), the concentration of AFM1 in 85% of infant formula samples was higher than the maximum tolerance limit accepted by the European Union and the US (25 ng/kg).

Abstract

Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD) are a collection of parenchymal lung disorders classified together for its similar clinical, radiographic and pathological manifestations. It is characterized by scarring and fibrosis of the lung interstitium. Several biomarkers including clinical and radiological biomarkers have been proposed to predict the stage and progress of the disease. In Saudi Arabia, there are no studies yet that has discussed the best treatment approach to those patients. For that, our research had focused about gathering informationabout the use of steroids, and whereas it had an effect on the disease progression.Furthermore, this study measured the outcome of the use of an immunosuppressive medications to control the disease. The study is a retrospective cohort study that was done in National Guard Hospital in Jeddah during the period from 2017 to 2019 for patients admitted with ILDs of unknown etiology during the period 2012 to 2016 who are Adults ( 18 years or older ) excluding those who have other chronic lung disease, heart failure, or known triggers to the disease.The data of the patients was collected by looking at their medical records (hardcopy).A data extraction sheet was used that included baseline demographics and disease characteristics, used medications, outcome parameters ( PFT, CT Chest, Subjective Clinical Improvements ) for data interpretation. And Data was analyzed using the software STATA. Results show the use of systemic steroids alone showed clinical improvement in 17% of steroid users and 8% improvement in chest CT. And the addition of immunosuppressive medications showed 33% clinical improvement and 17% chest CT improvement in comparison to those who were not treated with immunosuppressive medications. Concluding that the results were non significant with poor outcome and little improvement. &nbsp

Camel brucellosis is a widespread and critical zoonotic infection caused by Brucella abortus and Brucella meli-tensis that negatively impact dairy and meat products.The current meta-analysis covers studies published over a course of 40 years, between 1 January 1980 and 1 April 2021, aiming to investigate the global prevalence of Brucella spp. in camels and related risk factors in different camel-keeping areas. Chi-squared test (I2 index) was applied to evaluate the heterogeneity of studies. A random-effect model (REM) estimated the pooled prevalence among subgroups. The literature search on camel brucellosis was performed among the available databases, including CABI, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, Scielo, Scopus, and Science Direct. A total of 56 publications, comprising 205 data reports, were evaluated. Our results showed that the overall prevalence of camel brucellosis in the world was 9.23%. The lowest and highest prevalence rates of Brucella spp. infections among camels were reported in Oman (0.34%, 95%CI: 0.18–0.55) and Sudan (37.41%, 95%CI: 25.27–50.31), respectively. According to different risk factors, subgroup analysis showed that the location, sex, herd size, age, and mixed rearing with other animals could be considered the main risk factors impacting the occurrence of brucellosis in camels.The reported Brucella spp. in dromedary camel was Brucella melitensis (Biovar 1, 2, and 3), Brucella abor-tus (Biovar 3, 5, and 6), and Brucella suis. Our study represented remarkable differences between the prevalence of Brucella spp. in male (6.83% in 41 studies) and female (9.64% among 62 studies) camels. However, the present meta-epidemiological study would help improve control and surveillance approaches to prevent the spread of camel brucellosis among herds.

Abstract

Twenty formulas of eggplant dip, motabbal al-bathinjan in Arabic (MB), using different percentages of grilled eggplant, tahina (sesame pulp), and yogurt with constant levels of salt and citric acid were prepared and evaluated for the overall acceptability. The formula composed of 84.2% pulp of peeled grilled eggplant and 14% tahina without the addition of yogurt was found the most acceptable. The cold point of the canned MB was found to be in the geometric centre of the can. Canning of MB was conducted using three time/temperature combinations at the centre (80°C/5 min, 85°C/4 min, and 90°C/3 min). It was found that all heat-processes applied resulted in a commercially sterile canned MB with a high sensorial quality, as evidenced by the results of microbiological examinations, incubation tests, and sensory evaluation. Based on Bacillus coagulans, that may grow and cause flat sour spoilage of canned MB, the sterilisation value (F100) was estimated of the whole heat-process from the filling till cooling to about 70°C.
