A 4-month-old female Shar-pei dog was admitted with apathy, anorexia, and vomiting. The patient had an appropriate vaccination protocol, with the last vaccine administered 2.5 weeks prior to the onset of clinical signs. Physical examination revealed tachycardia, fever and swelling of the tibiotarsal joints. Several diagnostic tests including complete blood cell count, biochemistry profile, urinalysis, thoracic radiographs, hind limbs radiographs, abdominal ultrasound, and infectious diseases tests, were conducted to determine the underlying cause. Shar-Pei Auto-inflammatory Disease (SPAID) was diagnosed. Additionally, the patient developed skin necrosis in the inner aspect of the tibiotarsal joints as a complication. A skin biopsy revealed cutaneous vasculopathy causing degeneration, abrupt ulceration, and ischemic necrosis with intense neutrophilic inflammation of the dermis and subcutis. Moreover, a hospital-acquired infection was identified by skin culture. Debridement of the necrotic skin was performed, and due to its' severity and extent, the wound was closed by secondary intention. A diagnostic protocol and the therapeutic dose of acetylsalicylic acid, which led to clinical improvement, are recommended here. The patient has continued to present episodic manifestations of SPAID mainly fever and swelling of the tibiotarsal joints, but there has been no recurrence of necrosis or other cutaneous lesion in the last two years. Purpose Methods Results Conclusions Heavy brows in Chow Chow and Shar‐Pei dogs can be associated with pseudoptosis and trichiasis‐entropion of the upper eyelids, causing vision impairment and ocular discomfort. This study describes the outcomes of brow rhytidectomy ± Stades‐like procedure to address these anatomical abnormalities.Retrospective medical records review (2019–2022).Twenty‐seven dogs (n = 15 Chow Chow, n = 12 Shar‐Peis) were included, aged 1.9 ± 1.5 years (0.5–6.5 years). Presenting complaints included recurrent episodes of ocular inflammation (n = 13, 48.1%), blepharospasm (n = 10, 37.0%), corneal ulcers (n = 8, 29.6%), entropion (n = 6, 22.2%), and impaired vision (n = 4, 14.8%). Brow skin was removed as follows: (i) First incision parallel and 10–15 mm dorsal to upper lid, slightly extending beyond medial/lateral canthi; (ii) second incision forming an arc with its apex 15–35 mm dorsal to the first incision; and (iii) standard two or three layers closure. In 22/27 dogs, a Stades‐like procedure was performed by removing a 2–4 mm strip of skin above eyelid margin and leaving it to heal by secondary intention (no sutures). At last recheck (follow‐up 354.5 ± 187.8 days), 19/27 dogs (70.4%) had an adequate eyelid conformation, 7/27 dogs (25.9%) were considered under‐corrected, and 1/27 dogs (3.7%) was over‐corrected. Most owners (81.5%) were satisfied with the surgical results. Most cases (96.3%) had no recurrence of the clinical signs during the entire follow‐up period.Brow rhytidectomy ± Stades‐like procedure provide good cosmetic and clinical outcomes in Chow Chow and Shar‐Pei dogs, although under correction may occur in severely affected dogs and with advancing time. An magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination of the cervical spinal column and the brain was performed. The MRI examination of the brain was normal. A left-sided C3-C4 intervertebral disc extrusion with spinal cord compression was diagnosed. Medical treatment was elected. Within a week after the MRI examination, the dog presented with deep partial-thickness skin burn wounds in both axillae. Since the specific absorption rate had not exceeded the safety limits during any of the scans and no other procedures or circumstances were identified that could possibly have resulted in burn injuries, the thermal burn injuries were diagnosed as radiofrequency (RF) burns. The wounds healed by secondary intent over the next month. RF burns are the most reported complication in humans undergoing MRI but have not been reported in veterinary patients. Clinicians and technicians should consider the potential risk for RF burns in veterinary patients and take precautions regarding positioning of the patient and take notice of any signs of burn injury when performing follow-up examinations. A 11-month-old male intact Shar-Pei (26. 5 kg) was presented for a bilateral sublingual swelling of 4 months duration. The exploration of the oral cavity highlighted the presence of bilateral sublingual swellings, primarily consistent with bilateral ranula. The bilateral disease was treated with two subsequent surgeries 4 weeks apart. During the surgery, after removing an elliptical portion of the mucosa of the sublingual swelling, the presence of gelatinous tissue was visualized, and no saliva was present. The result of histological exam was oral mucinosis. At the subsequent follow-up the dog was in excellent conditions, without any symptoms. 1 month after the last operation, the dog underwent a visit in sedation to better evaluate the oral cavity. Both surgical sites were well-healed and without the presence of relapses. Upon 8 months follow-up the patient remained free of disease. This is the first reported case of oral mucinosis in sublingual mucosa in dogs. In this case the surgical treatment was curative.

Abstract Background Autoinflammatory diseases in dogs are characterized by complex disease processes with varying clinical signs. In Shar-Pei, signs of inflammation including fever and arthritis are known to be related with a breed-specific predisposition for Shar-Pei Autoinflammatory Disease (SPAID). Results Clinical and histopathological examinations of two severely SPAID-affected Shar-Pei revealed signs of inflammation including fever, arthritis, and perivascular and diffuse dermatitis in both dogs. A multifocal accumulation of amyloid in different organs was found in one SPAID-affected case. Whole genome sequencing resulted in 37 variants, which were homozygous mutant private mutations in SPAID-affected Shar-Pei. Nine SNVs with predicted damaging effects and three INDELs were further investigated in 102 Shar-Pei affected with SPAID, 62 unaffected Shar-Pei and 162 controls from 11 different dog breeds. The results showed the missense variant MTBP:g.19383758G > A in MTBP to be highly associated with SPAID in Shar-Pei. In the region of this gene a large ROH (runs of homozygosity) region could be detected exclusively in the two investigated SPAID-affected Shar-Pei compared to control dog breeds. No further SPAID-associated variant with predicted high or moderate effects could be found in genes identified in ROH regions. This MTBP variant was predicted to affect the MDN2-binding protein domain and consequently promote proinflammatory reactions. In the investigated group of Shar-Pei older than six years all dogs with the mutant genotype A/A were SPAID-affected whereas SPAID-unaffected dogs harbored the homozygous wildtype (G/G). Shar-Pei with a heterozygous genotype (G/A) were shown to have a 2.13-fold higher risk for disease development, which gave evidence for an incomplete dominant mode of inheritance. Conclusions The results of this study give strong evidence for a variant in MTBP related with proinflammatory processes via MTBP-MDM2 pathway. Thus, these results enable a reliable detection of SPAID in Shar-Pei dogs.

PURPOSE: To describe the outcome of modified brow suspension technique for the treatment of upper eyelid pseudoptosis in canine patients with redundant frontal skin folds. METHODS: Medical records from 1999 to 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. Only dogs that underwent modified brow suspension for treating bilateral pseudoptosis were included in the study. Recorded data included breed, age, gender, main ophthalmic complaint, ocular findings, suture material used for brow suspension, number of slings placed, postoperative treatment, complications, follow-up time, and outcome. RESULTS: Twenty-five adult dogs of different gender and breed fulfilled the inclusion criteria, with the Shar-Pei being overrepresented (19/25;76%). The main complaint at first presentation was mucopurulent discharge (10/25;40%) and blepharospasm (10/25;40%). Concurrent corneal disease was diagnosed in 47 eyes (47/50;94%). Monofilament polyamide was the most frequently used suture material (46/50;92%). Number of slings placed varied, with one in two eyes (4%), two in 28 eyes (56%), three in 17 eyes (34%), and four in three eyes (6%). Complications were seen in three eyes (6%): suture rupture (one eye; 2%) and skin abscess (two eyes; 4%). Mean follow-up time was 17.6 months (1-84 months), with no cases of fold dermatitis or dermatologic disease observed within this period. O presente relato descreve os achados clínicos e anatomopatológicos de um caso de amiloidose renal em um cão macho de nove anos da raça Shar-Pei. O animal apresentava quadro clínico de esporotricose e de insuficiência renal e exames positivos para erlichiose e leishmaniose. No dia anterior ao óbito, o cão apresentou apatia, desidratação e anúria. À necropsia foram observados inúmeros pontos milimétricos esbranquiçados localizados no córtex renal e hepatização do lobo diafragmático esquerdo. O achado histológico mais importante foi deposição de material eosinofílico, amorfo e acelular localizado nos tufos glomerulares que se corou positivamente pelo vermelho congo (amilóide). Observaram-se nefrite supurada multifocal, espessamento da cápsula de Bowman e broncopneumonia supurada crônica, com fibrose intensa. A origem da amiloidose, no presente caso, poderia ser hereditária, assemelhando-se à amiloidose familiar descrita em cães da raça Shar-Pei, ou ser devida à inflamação supurada crônica e/ou leishmaniose.The clinical and pathological findings of a case of renal amyloidosis in a nine-year-old male Shar-Pei dog were described. Clinically, there were signs of sporotrichosis and renal insufficiency, besides being positive to leishmaniasis and ehrlichiosis. On the day before death, the animal became apathetic, dehydrated and anuric. On gross examination, there were several whitish millimetric spots seen widespread in both renal cortices and consolidation of the left diaphragmatic pulmonary lobe. The most important microscopic finding was a deposition of amorphous acellular material on the glomerular tufts which stained positively by congo red stain. Other changes were multifocal suppurative nephritis, thickening of the Bowman capsule and chronic suppurative bronchopneumonia. The origin of the amyloidosis in this case could be hereditary, being similar to familiar amyloidosis described in Shar-Pei breed, or due to chronic suppurative inflammation and/or leishmaniasis.
