Abstract During rock drilling, a drill bit will wear as it breaks the rock. However, there is no uniform grading standard for rock abrasiveness. To solve this problem, the wear mechanisms of a polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit and the formation it is drilling into are analyzed in depth, and an abrasiveness evaluation method based on the fractal dimension of the rock surface topography is established. Initially, a three-dimensional digital model is generated from a scanning electron microscope image of the rock after drilling; next, an evaluation of the irregularities on the rock surface is performed using an adapted Weierstrass–Mandelbrot (W-M) function to ascertain the fractal dimensionality. Then, the microcontact characteristics of the contact surface between the formation and the PDC bit are analyzed, and the distribution of the microconvex contact points of the two-body friction pair in a region is obtained. Because the sliding friction between the drill bit and the rock produces a large amount of heat, according to the contact area formula of the friction surface and heat conduction theory, the temperature rise and overall temperature distribution of the formation and PDC bit under the condition of sliding friction are revealed, and the real contact area between the formation and the drill bit within a certain temperature range is obtained. Finally, the evaluation index of rock abrasiveness under sliding conditions is established by adopting the wear weight loss of the rock cutting tool per unit volume as the index of rock abrasiveness, and the model is verified by a microdrilling experiment. The research in this paper is highly important for improving the rock-breaking efficiency and bit service life during drilling.

Abstract Objective To examine the bi-directorial association between diversified leisure activity participation and cognitive function over a 7-year period. Methods Data analyzed was from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), a large-scale longitudinal national study. The baseline survey was conducted in 2011 with follow-up every three years. We traced a total of 2718 participants over a period of 7 years. We used adjusted random intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPMs) to examine the bi-directorial associations between diversified leisure activity participation and cognitive function. Results We observed bi-directorial associations between diversity of leisure activity and cognitive function across waves at the between-person and within-person levels. Summary: Strains from the Cryptococcus gattii species complex (CGSC) have caused the Pacific Northwest cryptococcosis outbreak, the largest cluster of life-threatening fungal infections in otherwise healthy human hosts known to date. In this study, we utilized a pan-phenome-based method to assess the fitness outcomes of CGSC strains under 31 stress conditions, providing a comprehensive overview of 2,821 phenotype-strain associations within this pathogenic clade. Phenotypic clustering analysis revealed a strong correlation between distinct types of stress phenotypes in a subset of CGSC strains, suggesting that shared determinants coordinate their adaptations to various stresses. Notably, a specific group of strains, including the outbreak isolates, exhibited a remarkable ability to adapt to all three of the most commonly used antifungal drugs for treating cryptococcosis (amphotericin B, 5-fluorocytosine, and fluconazole). By integrating pan-genomic and pan-transcriptomic analyses, we identified previously unrecognized genes that play crucial roles in conferring multidrug resistance in an outbreak strain with high multidrug adaptation. From these genes, we identified biomarkers that enable the accurate prediction of highly multidrug-adapted CGSC strains, achieving maximum accuracy and area under the curve (AUC) of 0.79 and 0.86, respectively, using machine learning algorithms. Overall, we developed a pan-omic approach to identify cryptococcal multidrug resistance determinants and predict highly multidrug-adapted CGSC strains that may pose significant clinical concern.

Thawing is the primary step in handling frozen aquatic products, which directly determines their end-product quality. This study firstly constructed a novel thawing method of ultrasound-assisted slightly basic electrolyzed water (UST), and its influences on the physicochemical and histological properties of shrimp, as well as the structural of myofibrillar proteins (MPs) in shrimp were evaluated. Results indicated that the UST treatment greatly reduced 48.9 % thawing time of frozen shrimp compared to traditional thawing approaches. Meanwhile, the UST effectively decreased the generation of malondialdehyde (MDA), total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), and carbonyl compounds in the thawed shrimps. In addition, it significantly preserved the elasticity and integrity of muscle fiber. Notably, the UST reduced the damage of thawing to the spatial structures of MPs, thereby greatly keeping the stability of protein. All these favorable changes maintained the water holding capacity (WHC) and quality of shrimp. Therefore, the UST is a promising non-thermal thawing technology for aquatic products.

Abstract Background This study aimed to explore the associations between household air pollution (HAP), measured by cooking fuel use, sensory impairments (SI), and their transitions in Chinese middle-aged and older adults. Methods Participants were recruited from the 2011 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and were subsequently followed up until 2018. Data on SI were collected by self-reported hearing and vision impairments, which were divided into three categories: non-SI, single SI (hearing or vision impairment), and dual SI (DSI). Cooking fuels, including solid and clean fuels, are proxies for HAP. The transitions of cooking fuels and SI refer to the switching of the fuel type or SI status from baseline to follow-up. Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to explore associations, and hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to evaluate the strength of the association. Results The prevalence of non-SI, single SI, and DSI was 59.6%, 31.8%, and 8.6%, respectively, among the 15,643 participants at baseline in this study. Over a median follow-up of 7.0 years, 5,223 worsening SI transitions were observed. In the fully adjusted model, solid fuel use for cooking was associated with a higher risk of worsening SI transitions, including from non-SI to single SI (HR = 1.08, 95% CI = 1.01–1.16) and from non-SI to DSI (HR = 1.26, 95% CI = 1.09–1.47), but not from single SI to DSI. In addition, compared to those who always used solid fuels, participants who switched from solid to clean fuel for cooking appeared to have attenuated the risk of worsening SI transitions. The statistical significance of the associations remained in the set of sensitivity analyses. Conclusion Solid fuel use was associated with higher risks of worsening SI transitions, while converting the type of cooking fuel from solid to clean fuels may reduce the risk of worsening SI transitions. Our study suggests that tailored clean fuel interventions, especially in developing countries, should be implemented to prevent sensory impairments and hence reduce the burden of sensory impairment-related disability.

Abstract Background Vitamin D deficiency and systemic inflammation share common pathological mechanisms in muscle loss, cardio-pulmonary function decline, and abnormal metabolism, which are linked to chronic conditions, senescence, and early mortality. However, their combined effect on mortality in older adults has not been well established. This study longitudinal aimed to explore the independent and combined associations of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) with mortality risk in Chinese community-based older people. Methods 3072 older adults (86.07 ± 11.87 years, 54.52% female) from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (2012–2018) were enrolled. Baseline 25(OH)D and hs-CRP levels were collected, and survival information was recorded in the 2014 and 2018 follow-up waves. Cox proportional hazard regressions were conducted to explore the associations between 25(OH)D, hs-CRP, and mortality. Demographic characteristics, health behaviors, and chronic disease biomarkers were adjusted. Results During 10,622.3 person-years of follow-up (median: 3.51 years), 1321 older adults died, including 448 deaths due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Increased mortality risk was associated with lower 25(OH)D and higher hs-CRP quantiles, even after adjusting for each other and multiple covariates (all P-trend 0). Conclusions Low 25(OH)D and high hs-CRP, both independently and jointly, increase mortality risk in Chinese community-dwelling older adults. Thus, priority should be given to early detection and appropriate intervention in older individuals with combined vitamin D deficiency and systemic inflammation. Molecular mechanisms of related adverse health effect are worthy of further investigation.

Abstract Background Fine motor skills are closely related to cognitive function. However, there is currently no comprehensive assessment of fine motor movement and how it corresponds with cognitive function. To conduct a complete assessment of fine motor and clarify the relationship between various dimensions of fine motor and cognitive function. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study with 267 community-based participants aged ≥ 60 years in Beijing, China. We assessed four tests performance and gathered detailed fine motor indicators using Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) motion capture technology. The wearable MEMS device provided us with precise fine motion metrics, while Chinese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to assess cognitive function. We adopted logistic regression to analyze the relationship between fine motor movement and cognitive function. Results 129 (48.3%) of the participants had cognitive impairment. The vast majority of fine motor movements have independent linear correlations with MoCA-BJ scores. According to logistic regression analysis, completion time in the Same-pattern tapping test (OR = 1.033, 95%CI = 1.003–1.063), Completion time of non-dominant hand in the Pieces flipping test (OR = 1.006, 95%CI = 1.000-1.011), and trajectory distance of dominant hand in the Pegboard test (OR = 1.044, 95%CI = 1.010–1.068), which represents dexterity, are related to cognitive impairment. Coordination, represented by lag time between hands in the Same-pattern tapping (OR = 1.663, 95%CI = 1.131–2.444), is correlated with cognitive impairment. Coverage in the Dual-hand drawing test as an important indicator of stability is negatively correlated with cognitive function (OR = 0.709, 95%CI = 0.6501–0.959). Based on the above 5-feature model showed consistently high accuracy and sensitivity at the MoCA-BJ score (ACU = 0.80–0.87). Conclusions The results of a comprehensive fine-motor assessment that integrates dexterity, coordination, and stability are closely related to cognitive functioning. Fine motor movement has the potential to be a reliable predictor of cognitive impairment.

This study utilizes a new approach for short-term stock correlation forecasting using a combination of convolutional neural networks (CNN), bi-directional long and short-term memory (BiLSTM), and attention mechanisms to address the issue of information loss due to excessively long input time series data. The objective is to improve the accuracy of short-term equity correlation forecasts, which is essential for the efficient management of financial asset portfolios. The existing time series models usually only take into account the effect of stock historical data characteristics on stock correlation but ignore the fact that stock correlation is affected by multiple factors and undergoes an unknown unstable trend. More efficient methods or algorithms need to be devised to deal with financial data. This paper explores stock metrics and introduces a multi-factor model to quantify the factors affecting stock returns in order to calculate the correlation between stocks. Meanwhile, to cope with the problem of incomplete input data, this paper simultaneously incorporates stock return data that is directly related to the correlation data. In the CNN-BiLSTM-Attention (CLATT) model, the role of the CNN module is to obtain high-dimensional features from the input time series data, and the role of the BiLSTM module is to process the time series information to capture the time-series features in the stock return data and correlation data in the sample. In order to acquire the inherent correlation between the input stock return data and correlation data and to enhance the prediction accuracy of the model, the attention mechanism is finally implemented and used to optimize the weights of the BiLSTM output. In this paper, mean square error (MSE), root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE) metrics, mean absolute percentage of error (MAPE), and the coefficient of determination $R^{2}$ , as well as four benchmark models, are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed model. The result shows that the CLATT model has 57.32% and 33% improvement in the correlation prediction accuracy of different stock portfolios compared to the single LSTM model, and the model prediction accuracy has been improved. Compared with the benchmark CNN-BiLSTM, it also has 56.06% and 28.87% improvement.

Abstract Background Modern medicine emphasizes that medical professionals engage in interprofessional collaboration to better meet the diverse needs of patients from physical, psychological, and social perspectives. As nursing students are the future reserve of the clinical nursing workforce, nursing educators worldwide should pay close attention to nursing students’ interprofessional learning attitudes and take responsibility for training qualified interprofessional nursing personnel. However, little is known about the relationship between nursing students' readiness for interprofessional learning and academic self-efficacy. Thus, this study aims to investigate the level of readiness for interprofessional learning and academic self-efficacy among nursing students, and to explore the relationship between the two. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted with a sample of 741 undergraduate nursing students pursuing four-year degrees from a school in Jinan, Shandong Province, China from November to December 2021. The social-demographic questionnaire, Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale, and Academic Self-efficacy Scale were used for data collection. Descriptive statistics used to analyze the data included: Cronbach's alpha, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation, and multiple linear regression analysis. Results Readiness for interprofessional learning mean score was (3.91 ± 0.44) and mean academic self-efficacy was (3.47 ± 0.42). BackgroundA negative school climate is an important factor affecting students’ mental health. However, few studies have focused on the mechanisms underlying the relationship. This study aimed to explore the mediating effect of school belonging on the association between negative school climate and depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents, using a nationwide longitudinal survey.MethodsWe conducted a longitudinal study using data from the 2013 (T1) and 2014 (T2) waves of the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS). A negative school climate was assessed by school administrators’ reports. School belonging and depressive symptoms were evaluated using adolescents’ self-reports. BackgroundPrevious animal experiments have demonstrated the potential of spermidine to mitigate glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, and hyperinsulinemia. However, there remains a scarcity of epidemiological evidence supporting these findings. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate the associations of serum spermidine with T2DM and FPG.Materials and methodsThe cross-sectional study was conducted from June to August 2019 in the rural areas of Fuxin County, Liaoning Province, China. A total of 4,437 participants were included in the study. The serum spermidine was detected using high-performance liquid chromatography with a fluorescence detector. FPG was measured using the hexokinase method. T2DM was defined as participants with a FPG level of 7.0 mmol/L or greater, or self-reported diagnosis of diabetes by a doctor. Restricted cubic spline model and piecewise linear regression model were used to explore the associations of serum spermidine with T2DM and FPG, respectively.ResultsThe mean (SD) age of the participants was 59.3 (10.0) years, with 622 out of 4,437 participants being defined as T2DM. The serum spermidine in participants stratified by age and BMI categories was significantly different, with p values of 0.006 and 0.001, respectively. Among all the participants, the association of serum spermidine with T2DM was J-shaped. The log (spermidine) was negatively associated with T2DM (OR = 0.68, 95% CI: 0.52 to 0.92, p = 0.01) below the inflection point, while log (spermidine) was not significantly associated with T2DM (OR = 1.97, 95% CI: 0.93 to 4.15, p = 0.07) above the inflection point. Among the participants without T2DM, the association of serum spermidine with FPG was inverted J-shaped. The log (spermidine) was positively associated with FPG (β = 0.13, 95% CI: 0.05 to 0.21, p = 0.001) below the inflection point, while log (spermidine) was negatively associated with FPG (β = −0.29, 95% CI: −0.42 to −0.16, p

Abstract Dietary intake is considered as a crucial factor affecting mental health symptoms, particularly depression and anxiety symptoms, especially in the case of pregnant women. This study explored the role of dietary intake in depression and anxiety symptoms of pregnant women and provided evidence for primary care interventions. We enrolled 806 pregnant women in their third trimester from 14 communities in Hengyang City, Hunan Province, China, from July 2019 to September 2019. The Chinese version of the Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 (PHQ‐9) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder questionnaire‐7 (GAD‐7) were used to assess depression and anxiety symptoms. Dietary intake, demographic characteristics, BMI, and pregnancy characteristics were collected using a self‐designed, structural questionnaire. A covariate‐adjusted logistic regression was conducted to examine the relationship between mental health symptoms and dietary intake. The prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms in our population were 7.7% (95% CI: 5.9%–9.5%) and 9.2% (95% CI: 7.2%–11.2%), respectively. Women consuming eggs and egg products once a week (OR: 3.688, 95% CI: 1.476–9.215) were more likely to have depression symptom than consumed eggs and egg products once or more per day. Abstract Background Financial protection is a key dimension of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), and social medical insurance is an effective measure to provide financial protection. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of urban–rural medical insurance integration on medical impoverishment in China. Methods We collected the time of integration policy in 337 prefecture-level cities across China, combined with the longitudinal database of China Labor-force Dynamics Survey (CLDS) from 2012–2016, and used a difference-in-differences (DID) method with multiple time periods at the city level to study the effect of urban–rural medical insurance integration on the medical impoverishment. Besides, to explore the heterogeneity of policy effects across populations, we conducted subgroup analyses based on respondents' age, household registration, and whether they were rural–urban migrants. Findings A total of 8,397 samples were included in the study. The integration policy has significantly reduced the incidence of medical impoverishment (average treatment effect on the treated (ATT) = − 0.055, p 0.05; ATT for age 35–54 = − 0.042, p 0.05). We propose a bandpass/bandstop-switchable frequency-selective metasurface (FSM) designed for high-speed vehicles that generate high temperatures during flight, based on a high-temperature-resistant dielectric substrate and liquid metal (LM). We fabricated a cavity structure by utilizing a high-temperature-resistant dielectric substrate to form a metal FSM element by introducing LM, enabling specific electromagnetic functions. The flow state of the LM can be controlled to achieve the switching of the FSM’s bandpass/bandstop performance. The bandstop characteristic has a resonance frequency of 6.1 GHz and the bandpass interval is 5.53–6.51 GHz. The bandpass characteristic has a resonance frequency of 5.41 GHz and the bandstop interval is 5.30–5.76 GHz, achieving a bandpass/bandstop switching range of 5.53–5.76 GHz. LM fluidity can aid in high-temperature heat dissipation. When the LM reaches a certain flow rate, the FSM structure’s average temperature can be reduced by an order of magnitude from a thousand to less than a hundred degrees. The FSM exhibits low RCS, with 22.35 dB and 36.79 dB reductions in bandstop and bandpass properties, respectively, compared with that of sheet metal. A prototype was developed and tested, validating the design of the FSM structure with high-temperature resistance, bandpass/bandstop switchability, and low RCS characteristics, and is expected to be applied in high-speed aircraft.

BackgroundOver the past two decades, the field of radiation brain injury has attracted the attention of an increasing number of brain scientists, particularly in the areas of molecular pathology and therapeutic approaches. Characterizing global collaboration networks and mapping development trends over the past 20 years is essential.ObjectiveThe aim of this paper is to examine significant issues and future directions while shedding light on collaboration and research status in the field of radiation brain injury.MethodsBibliometric studies were performed using CiteSpaceR-bibliometrix and VOSviewer software on papers regarding radiation brain injury that were published before November 2023 in the Web of Science Core Collection.ResultsIn the final analysis, we found 4,913 records written in 1,219 publications by 21,529 authors from 5,007 institutions in 75 countries. There was a noticeable increase in publications in 2014 and 2021. The majority of records listed were produced by China, the United States, and other high-income countries. The largest nodes in each cluster of the collaboration network were Sun Yat-sen University, University of California–San Francisco, and the University of Toronto. Galldiks N, Barnett GH, Langen KJ and Kim JH are known to be core authors in the field. The top 3 keywords in that time frame are radiation, radiation necrosis, and radiation-therapy.ConclusionsThe objective and thorough bibliometric analysis also identifies current research hotspots and potential future paths, providing a retrospective perspective on RBI and offering useful advice to researchers choosing research topics. Future development directions include the integration of multi-omics methodologies and novel imaging techniques to improve RBI's diagnostic effectiveness and the search for new therapeutic targets.

Abstract Background It remains unclear whether plant-based or animal-based dietary patterns are more beneficial for older adults more in maintaining muscle mass. Using a prospective cohort with nationwide sample of China older adults in this study, we aimed to examine the relationship between adhering to plant-based diet patterns or animal-based diet patterns and muscle loss. Methods We included 2771 older adults (≥ 65 years) from the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey (CLHLS) with normal muscle mass at baseline (2011 and 2014 waves), which followed up into 2018. Plant-based dietary pattern scores and preference subgroups were constructed using 16 common animal-based and plant-based food frequencies. We used the corrected appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) prediction formula to assess muscle mass. We applied the Cox proportional hazard risk regression to explore associations between dietary patterns and low muscle mass (LMM). Results During a mean of 4.1 years follow-up, 234 (8.4%) participants with normal muscle mass at baseline showed LMM. The plant-based dietary pattern reduced the risk of LMM by 5% (Hazard Ratios [HR]: 0.95, 95% confidence intervals [95%CI]: 0.92–0.97). In addition, a high plant-based food company with a high animal-based food intake pattern reduced the risk of LMM by 60% (HR: 0.40, 95% CI: 0.240–0.661) and 73% (HR: 0.27, 95% CI: 0.11–0.61) in the BADL disability and IADL disability population compared with a low plant-based food and high animal-based food intake, whereas a high plant-based food and low animal-based food intake was more beneficial in reducing the risk of LMM in the normal BADL functioning (HR: 0.57, 95% CI: 0.35–0.90) and IADL functioning (HR: 0.51, 95% CI: 0.28–0.91) population. Conclusions When it comes to maintaining muscle mass in older Chinese people with functional independence, a plant-based diet pattern is more beneficial and effective than the animal-based one. People with functional dependence may profit from a combination of plant-based and animal-based diets to minimize muscle loss.

Purpose: Abdominal incisional hernia is one of the most common complications after surgery. The preoperative evaluation of the area of abdominal wall defect and the hernia sac volume(HCV) is very important for the selection of patch size and incisional herniorrhaphy. Meanwhile the overlap range of reinforcement repair is controversial. This study aimed to explore the value of ultrasonic volume auto-scan(UVAS) in the diagnosis, classification and treatment of incisional hernia. Methods: Both the width and the area of abdominal wall defect and HCV were measured by UVAS in 50 cases with incisional hernias. In 32 of these cases, the measurements of HCV were compared with those of CT. Classification of incisional hernia based on ultrasonic images were compared with operative diagnosis. Results: The measurements of HCV by UVAS and CT 3D reconstruction had good consistency, of which the mean ratio was 1.0084. According to the location and width of abdominal wall defect, UVAS, which showed good accuracy rate (90%, 96%), reached a good agreement in the classification of incisional hernias with operative diagnoses (Kappa = 0.85, Confidence Interval [0.718,0.996]; Kappa = 0.95, Confidence Interval [0.887,0.999]). The patch area should be at least two times as large as the defect area. Conclusions: UVAS is an accurate alternative to measure the abdominal wall defect and HCV and classify the incisional hernia, with additional benefits of no radiation exposure and instant bedside interpretation. The use of UVAS is conducive to preoperative assessment of the risk of hernia recurrence and abdominal compartment syndrome.

Abstract Background The oral status of an individual is a vital aspect of their overall health. However, older adults in nursing homes have a higher prevalence of frailty and poor oral health, particularly in the context of global aging. The objective of this study is to explore the association between oral status and frailty among older adults residing in nursing homes. Methods The study involved 1280 individuals aged 60 and above from nursing homes in Hunan province, China. A simple frailty questionnaire (FRAIL scale) was used to evaluate physical frailty, while the Oral Health Assessment Tool was used to assess oral status. The frequency of tooth brushing was classified as never, once a day, and twice or more a day. The traditional multinomial logistic regression model was used to analyze the association between oral status and frailty. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated while controlling for other confounding factors. Results The study found that the prevalence of frailty among older adults living in nursing homes was 53.6%, while the prevalence of pre-frailty was 36.3%. ABSTRACTObservational studies have shown that the gut microbiome is associated with frailty. However, whether these associations underlie causal effects remains unknown. Thus, this study aimed to assess the genetic correlation and causal relationships between the genetically predicted gut microbiome and frailty using linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) and Mendelian Randomization (MR). Summary statistics for the gut microbiome were obtained from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis of the MiBioGen consortium (N = 18,340). Summary statistics for frailty were obtained from a GWAS meta-analysis, including the UK Biobank and TwinGene (N = 175,226). We used LDSC and MR analyses to estimate the genetic correlation and causality between the genetically predicted gut microbiome and frailty. Our findings indicate a suggestive genetic correlation between Christensenellaceae R-7 and frailty. Moreover, we found evidence for suggestive causal effects of twelve genus-level gut microbes on frailty using at least two MR methods. There was no evidence of horizontal pleiotropy or heterogeneity in the MR analysis. This study provides suggestive evidence for a potential genetic correlation and causal association between several genetically predicted gut microbes and frailty. More population-based observational studies and animal experiments are required to clarify this association and the underlying mechanisms.

The Da Vinci surgical robotic system has revolutionized the field of robotic surgery and has become one of the most ubiquitous and recognized systems in the robotic surgery era. The rapid rise in China’s economy will provide crucial support for the promotion and application of robotic surgical systems in the country’s surgical field. At present, approximately 1.2 million inguinal hernia repairs are performed annually in China. However, many of these surgeries are performed via traditional open repair or laparoscopy methods. Using the purported benefits of robotic surgery system to benefit hernia patients should become a future direction for Chinese hernia surgeons.

Water scarcity and water pollution have become increasingly severe, and therefore, the purification of water resources has recently garnered increasing attention. Given its position as a major water resource, the efficient purification of drinking water is of crucial importance. In this study, we adopted a phase transition method to prepare ZrO2/BCM (bamboo cellulose membranes), after which we developed IP-ZrO2/BC-NFM (bamboo cellulose nanofiltration membranes) through interfacial polymerization using piperazine (PIP) and tricarbonyl chloride (TMC). Subsequently, we integrated these two membranes to create a combined “ultrafiltration + nanofiltration” membrane process for the treatment of drinking water. The membrane combination process was conducted at 25 °C, with ultrafiltration at 0.1 MPa and nanofiltration at 0.5 MPa. This membrane combination, featuring “ultrafiltration + nanofiltration,” had a significant impact on reducing turbidity, consistently maintaining the post-filtration turbidity of drinking water at or below 0.1 NTU. Furthermore, the removal rates for CODMN and ammonia nitrogen reached 75% and 88.6%, respectively, aligning with the standards for high-quality drinking water. In a continuous 3 h experiment, the nanofiltration unit exhibited consistent retention rates for Na2SO4 and bovine serum protein (BSA), with variations of less than 5%, indicating exceptional separation performance. After 9 h of operation, the water flux of the nanofiltration unit began to stabilize, with a decrease rate of approximately 25%, demonstrating that the “ultrafiltration + nanofiltration” membrane combination can maintain consistent performance during extended use. In conclusion, the “ultrafiltration + nanofiltration” membrane combination exhibited remarkable performance in the treatment of drinking water, offering a viable solution to address issues related to water scarcity and water pollution.

ObjectivesPatients with digestive diseases frequently suffer from dyspepsia and malabsorption, which may lead to muscle loss due to malnutrition. However, it is not clear whether digestive diseases are associated with sarcopenia. This study aims to explore the longitudinal association between digestive diseases and sarcopenia in middle-aged and older adults based on a nationally representative survey from China.MethodsWe used a prospective cohort study including 7,025 middle-aged and older adults aged ≥45 years from the 2011 to 2015 waves China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Digestive diseases were identified using self-report. The assessment of sarcopenia was based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 Consensus and included three components of muscle strength, physical performance, and muscle mass. Cox hazards regression was used to examine the association between digestive diseases and sarcopenia.ResultsThe prevalence of digestive diseases and the incidence of sarcopenia in middle-aged and older adults were 22.6% (95% CI = 21.6–23.6%) and 8.5% (95% CI = 7.8–9.1%). After adjusting for 15 covariates composed of three sets (demographic characteristics, lifestyles, and health status), digestive diseases were associated with a higher risk of sarcopenia (HR = 1.241, 95% CI = 1.034–1.490, P < 0.05). The associations were more pronounced among men, older adults aged 60–79, rural residents, and married people. In addition, the association between digestive diseases and sarcopenia was robust in the sensitivity analysis.ConclusionDigestive diseases were associated with an increased risk of sarcopenia in middle-aged and older adults aged ≥45 years. Early intervention of digestive diseases may help to reduce the incidence of sarcopenia in middle-aged and older adults.

Polypropylene (PP) mesh is one of the most widely used artificial meshes to treat hernias. It has many advantages but can also cause chronic inflammation, pain, and adhesion. In inguinal hernia repair, PP mesh may have a negative effect on the reproductive system. In this study, the protective effect of an electrospun fibrous membrane was investigated in an autologous control experiment of inguinal hernia repair in rabbits. Tissue adhesions, obstructions of the spermatic cord, orchiatrophy, and reproductive system abnormalities were highly correlated and mainly appeared soon after implantation. The fibrous membrane, which serves as a biocompatible physical barrier, successfully reduced the deformity and dysfunction of the spermatic cord, testicle, and reproductive system, while polypropylene mesh caused severe damage. In the sub-chronic and chronic stages, at 90 and 180 days, respectively, the peritonealization of the remaining mesh was in the process while the fibrous membrane was degrading. The structure and function of the spermatic cord, testicle, and reproductive system were well protected and maintained because the newly formed tissue prevented contact between the mesh and the spermatic cord. Thus, introducing a fibrous membrane in inguinal hernia repair reduces the adverse effects of polypropylene mesh.

Abstract Background ESAT6-CFP10 (EC) skin test has been reported accurate and safe in identifying tuberculosis infection. We aimed to demonstrate the safety of EC skin test compared with tuberculin skin test (TST) in university freshmen. Methods We conducted a double-blind, randomized, controlled clinical study in a university freshmen population with 16,680 participates in China, and finally 14,579 completed the study. About a half received an EC skin test and the others received TST. Adverse reactions were evaluated. Results Out of the 14,579 participants, 48.2% (7029/14,579) were males. The average age was 18.1 ± 0.8 years and the average BMI was 20.9 ± 3.1 kg/m2. 50.4% (7351/14,579) participants received EC skin test and 49.6% (7228/14,579) received TST. The EC group had significantly less adverse reactions compared with the TST group (21.3%, 1565/7351 vs. 34.6%, 2499/7228, P = 0.000). The most common adverse reactions for EC were bleeding (5.63%, 414), dermatodyschroia (4.27%, 314), induration (3.90%, 287), swelling (2.49%, 183), pain (1.59%, 117) and pruritus (1.48%, 109). Abstract Objectives To explore the clinical significance of 18F-FDG metabolic imaging in the diagnosis and biological risk assessment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). Methods This study is a clinical retrospective study. The research subjects were patients with GIST who were admitted to our hospital from January 2014 to December 2019 and underwent 18F-FDG metabolic imaging, and the relationship between biological risk and FDG metabolism was analyzed retrospectively. Results A total of 32 patients with GIST were included in this study, of which 17 patients had very low and low-risk lesions, and the FDG metabolism level did not increase; five patients had moderate-risk gastric lesions, and the FDG metabolism level was abnormally increased; 10 patients had high-risk lesions, and except for one patient with multiple lesions, the FDG metabolism level of these patients was increased. Conclusions The level of glucose metabolism is abnormally increased in tumor cells with vigorous mitosis and has higher biological risk. The 18F-FDG metabolism level can determine the biological risk of GIST and whether high-risk lesions involve other tissues and organs, as it more comprehensively reflects the distribution of lesions, the activity of tumor cells and the stage of the disease.

Abstract Background Existing evidence highlights that exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is a risk factor for pregnant women’s health and is possibly affected by individual characteristics. This study aimed to explore the effect of individual socioeconomic status (SES) on SHS exposure among pregnant women in the third trimester and the interaction effect of age. Methods A total of 678 nonsmoking pregnant women with a median age of 29.0 years from 14 communities in a medium-sized city were recruited for this survey. Exposure to SHS was defined as the self-reported smoking habit of a spouse/partner. Individual SES characteristics consisted of marital status, educational attainment, employment and per capita monthly income. Results There were 238 (35.1%) participants who suffered from SHS exposure. Compared to the pregnant women who were employed, those who were unemployed were more likely to suffer from SHS exposure (OR = 1.572, 95% CI: 1.013–2.441). Participants who had a high school or technical secondary school education were more likely to be exposed to SHS than those with a college education or above (OR = 1.601, 95% CI: 1.029–2.449). Advanced age was a protective factor for participants with a college education or above (OR = 0.939, 95% CI: 0.884–0.997), but age increased the risk of SHS exposure among women who had unstable marriages (OR = 1.256, 95% CI: 1.019–1.549). Conclusion Exposure to SHS was very common among pregnant women in the third trimester. Pregnant women with a low SES and an older age should be considered a key population for the implementation of public health interventions.

BackgroundSarcopenia is a common geriatric disease. Many dietary factors may contribute to the development of sarcopenia. Few studies have been conducted on dietary diversity and sarcopenia in Chinese older adults. Among a nationwide sample, the objective of this study is to assess the association between the dietary diversity score (DDS) and the prevalence of possible sarcopenia. We considered the different patterns of dietary diversity in relation to possible sarcopenia.MethodsWe conducted this analysis utilizing the cross-sectional data from the 2012, 2014, and 2018 waves of the Chinese longitudinal healthy longevity survey (CLHLS). A standard developed by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 (AWGS2019) was used to assess the possibility of sarcopenia. On the basis of the DDS generated by previous studies, we have constructed four new indicators as follows: total diet, animal-based diet, plant-based diet, and plant-based diet without the consumption of legume products and nuts. We used the generalized estimation equation (GEE) model to evaluate the associations between the DDS of the total diet, animal-based diet, plant-based diet, and plant-based diet without the intake of legume products and nuts and possible sarcopenia. These associations were statistically adjusted for a variety of potential confounders. Sensitivity analysis was performed by excluding some participants who were long-term bedridden, had Alzheimer's disease, or were terminally ill.ResultsThe analysis included 6,624 participants (mean age 83.4 years at baseline). In our study, we found that participants with a higher DDS of the total diet (OR = 0.62; 95% CI: 0.51–0.77), animal-based diet (OR = 0.62; 95% CI: 0.49–0.79), and plant-based diet (OR = 0.64;95% CI: 0.51–0.80) were at a lower risk of developing sarcopenia. In sensitivity analyses, the associations remained unchanged.ConclusionTaking a diversified diet, including animal foods, may reduce the risk of developing sarcopenia. According to the findings of this study, adopting a diversified diet might reduce the risk of sarcopenia for older adults.

Improvement of urban land green use efficiency (ULGUE) in the context of sustained economic growth is a major challenge for the regional sustainable development and ecological civilization construction in China. This study measures the ULGUE of 263 cities in China at the prefecture or above level, clarifies its spatio-temporal changes, investigates the effect of ecological civilization pilot demonstration area construction on ULGUE with the multi-period PSM-DID model and spatial Durbin difference model, and evaluates the spatial spillover effect of the policy. The results show that: 1) In terms of spatio-temporal changes, ULGUE shows a steady upward trend with time. From 2006 to 2019, the national mean value of ULGUE increases from 0.5284 to 0.6439, with an increase rate of 21.86%; in the spatial dimension, ULGUE is characterized by a pattern of eastern > national > central > western. 2) Ecological civilization pilot demonstration area construction has significantly improved the ULGUE of pilot cities by about 0.12% relative to that of non-pilot cities, which was validated by the robustness test. 3) Ecological civilization pilot demonstration area construction has significant positive spillover effects on the ULGUE of neighboring cities, which are related to the urban characteristics such as geographical location, resource endowment, and environmental protection intensity. 4) Ecological civilization pilot demonstration area construction has certain heterogeneity in its effect on ULGUE in different regions and cities, with a more significant promoting effect for non-eastern regions, non-resource-based cities, and non-key cities of environmental protection. Therefore, it is necessary to summarize the successful experience of ecological civilization pilot demonstration area construction and fully consider differential policies, so as to maximize the policy dividends while strengthening regional linkage, and further contribute to national popularization of this policy.

Objective Digital divide in health-related technology use is a prominent issue for older adults. Improving eHealth literacy may be an important solution to this problem. This study aimed to explore the associations between health literacy, digital skills, and eHealth literacy among older Chinese adults. Methods A total of 2,144 older adults (mean age, 72.01 ± 6.96 years) from Jinan City, China participated in this study. The eHealth Literacy Scale was used to measure eHealth literacy in older adults. A linear regression model was used to analyze the associations among health literacy, digital skills, and eHealth literacy in older Chinese adults. Results The mean eHealth literacy score of the older adults was 17.56 ± 9.61. ObjectiveThis study aims to examine the association between childhood traumatic events (CTEs), childhood trauma severity, and depressive symptoms, as well as to examine the mediating and moderating roles of resilience in these associations.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study of 1,091 community-dwelling older adults in Jinan, China. The trauma history questionnaire (THQ) was used to measure CTEs and childhood trauma severity. CTEs were defined as the number of traumatic events before the age of 18. We calculated childhood trauma severity by multiplying the number of CTEs by the participants’ self-perceived impact level of the events from the THQ. We then applied the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale and 10-item Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale to assess participants’ depressive symptoms and resilience, respectively. Linear regression models were used to examine the associations, and structural equation modeling was used to examine the mediating and moderating roles of resilience.ResultsChildhood traumatic events, childhood trauma severity, and resilience were all associated with depressive symptoms in older adults. Resilience mediated the relationship between childhood trauma severity and depressive symptoms (β = 0.082, 95% CI = 0.045–0.123), accounting for 26.6% of the overall effect (β = 0.308, 95% CI = 0.190–0.422). However, there was no evidence that resilience mediated the association between CTEs and depressive symptoms. In addition, we did not find that resilience played a moderating role in the associations of CTEs, childhood trauma severity with depressive symptoms.ConclusionResilience plays a mediating role in the relationship between childhood trauma severity and depressive symptoms. Intervention measures on improving resilience may reduce childhood trauma severity associated with depression risk in older Chinese adults.

Emotions are attracting growing attention in second language acquisition (SLA), especially with the advent of positive psychology (PP). The fundamental role of emotions in affecting learners’ second language (L2) achievement has been well-documented. Evidence also indicates that emotions can significantly influence learners’ L2 learning engagement which profoundly impacts their academic performance. However, the links between emotions, engagement, and L2 achievement remain underexplored. To contribute to this research domain, the present study sought to unpack the relationships between learners’ emotions, such as foreign language enjoyment (FLE), foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA), and foreign language learning boredom (FLLB), and engagement as well as their English achievement. A total of 907 learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) from a university in China were recruited to complete an online questionnaire. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was performed to test the hypothesized relations among the variables. Results revealed correlations between learners’ FLE, FLCA, and FLLB. Furthermore, learners’ engagement was found to mediate the relationships between their emotions (FLE, FLCA, and FLLB) and English achievement. The findings broaden the nomological network of emotions and engagement in the EFL context, and provide evidence for the mechanism underlying the relationships between emotions, engagement, and achievement, thereby shedding light on EFL teaching and learning at the tertiary level in China.

BackgroundWhile high blood pressure has been linked to cognitive impairment, the relationship between low blood pressure, especially hypotension, and cognitive impairment has not been well studied. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of hypotension and cognitive impairment in the seniors of China, and the association between hypotension and cognitive function impairment.MethodsThe data was derived from the 2018 wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Systolic blood pressures (SBP) and diastolic blood pressures (DBP) were measured by objective examination. The Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (CMMSE) was used to evaluate the cognitive impairment of the elderly. Generalized linear models were conducted to evaluate the association of hypotension with cognitive impairment.ResultsThe prevalence of hypotension and cognitive impairment in the Chinese elderly were 0.76% and 22.06%, respectively. Participants with hypotension, lower SBP, and lower DBP, had odds ratios of 1.62, 1.38, and 1.48 for cognitive impairment, respectively. Besides, the CMMSE scores decreased by 2.08, 0.86, and 1.08 in the elderly with hypotension, lower SBP, and DBP, compared with those with non-hypotension, higher SBP, and DBP, respectively. Subgroup analyses showed that the association of cognitive impairment with hypotension was stronger in Chinese elderly who had decreased activity of daily living. Moreover, there was statistical evidence of a nonlinear dose-response relationship of SBP and DBP with cognitive impairment (Pnonlinear < 0.05).ConclusionHypotension was a potential risk factor for cognitive impairment of the Chinese elderly, especially for those having decreased activity of daily living. Blood pressure management should be conducted to prevent them from cognitive impairment.

Abstract Background To explore the association between social capital and frailty and the mediating effect of health-promoting lifestyles among Chinese older adults, while providing scientific evidence for frailty intervention. Methods In May 2021, a cross-sectional study was conducted among 674 Chinese older adults in Changsha city. Data was collected using the Chinese Shortened Social Capital Scale (comprising structural social capital and cognitive social capital as two subscales), a simplified version of the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile and the Tilburg Frailty Indicator. Linear regression analysis was used to examine the association between social capital and frailty. Structural equation modeling was used to test the mediating effect of health-promoting lifestyles. Results Cognitive social capital was significantly negatively associated with frailty and its three dimensions (physical, psychological, and social frailty), but structural social capital was not. Health-promoting lifestyles played a mediating role in the associations of cognitive social capital with frailty, physical and psychological frailty, but not with social frailty. Conclusions Higher cognitive social capital was associated with a reduced likelihood of frailty. The health-promoting lifestyles partially mediated the association between cognitive social capital and frailty. The use of health-promoting lifestyles or appropriate cognitive social capital interventions may reduce frailty among older adults.

A 1083 nm laser, corresponding to a characteristic spectral line of 3He 23S1-23P, is the core light source for spin-exchange optical pumping-free technology, and thus has important developmental significance. In this paper, precise wavelength 1083.34 nm semiconductor lasers with 285 mW output power, −144.73 dBc/Hz RIN noise and 30.9952 kHz linewidth have been successfully achieved via reasonable chips design, high-quality epitaxial growth process and ultra-low reflectivity coating fabrication. All the results show the highest output power and ultra-narrow linewidth of the single-frequency 1083 nm DFB semiconductor laser achieved in this paper, which can fully satisfy the requirement of quantum magnetometers.

Since the insulation performance of air is not as good as that of SF6 and other gases, it is necessary to conduct an in-depth study on the insulation characteristics of the fuse tube in order to meet the requirements of normal breaking and to design a structural improvement scheme for a 12 kV environmental protection cabinet fuse tube that is suitable for using air as the insulating medium. In this study, the insulation performance of the fuse tube before improvement was studied, and the electric-field distribution of the 12 kV fuse tube placed in the air-insulated switchgear was analyzed. The results showed that the electric-field was heavily concentrated in the air gap of the fuse tube plug and around the ground rod. In this study, the structure of the fuse tube was specifically designed. By spraying conductive paint on the intersection surface of different media, equipotentiality was achieved, and a reasonable metal shielding structure was added to the site where the field intensity was concentrated so as to improve the distribution of the electric-field and avoid the breakdown caused by the concentration of field intensity. Through several improved designs, the maximum electric-field strength of the fuse tube of an environmental protection cabinet can be effectively reduced, and the insulation requirements of relevant standards can be met. A partial discharge test for the improved fuse tube was carried out, and the local discharge quantity of the improved fuse tube met the industry requirements, which verified the rationality of the fuse-tube-improvement scheme.

Abstract Background This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (C-SIBDQ), and its measurement invariance across sex in Chinese patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Methods Between September 2018 and July 2021, 284 patients with IBD were recruited from a spleen and stomach clinic. All participants completed the C-SIBDQ, 12-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12), nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire Depression Scale (PHQ-9), and the seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7). Floor and ceiling effects were evaluated by testing frequencies and composition ratios for the minimum and maximum C-SIBDQ scores. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to evaluate the C-SIBDQ’s factor structure and construct validity. Convergent validity was evaluated through examining bivariate correlations between the C-SIBDQ and the SF-12, PHQ-9, and GAD-7. Internal consistency reliability and retest reliability were evaluated by respectively calculating the Cronbach’s α and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) among a subsample (n = 79) after 2 weeks. The measurement invariance across sex was evaluated through multiple-group CFA. Results The C-SIBDQ scores showed no floor or ceiling effects and had a single-factor structure and good convergent validity, with significant correlations with the SF-12, PHQ-9 and GAD-7. Good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.920) and test–retest reliability (ICC = 959) were observed. The C-SIBDQ also showed measurement invariance across sex, and females showed higher C-SIBDQ scores than males. Conclusions The C-SIBDQ has high reliability, validity, and stability across sex, and can be used in clinics to assess the health-related quality of life of patients with IBD.

AbstractPalaeozoic petroleum systems in the South China craton are prospecting frontiers for unconventional oil/gas. Understanding the hydrocarbon generation/retention capacity of source rocks has critical implications for reserve evaluation and targeting, which yet remains ambiguous in this region. In this study, six representative lithological types of organic-rich, immature-low-mature source rocks (two shales, two carbonates, a coal, and a solid bitumen) taken from the South China craton were treated with semiclosed hydrous pyrolysis (300–550°C). Pyrolysis results show that shale and carbonate source rocks have great hydrocarbon generation capacities, and immature solid bitumen can also generate appreciable quantities of hydrocarbons, whereas coal has the least hydrocarbon generation capacity. Both oil and gas are important hydrocarbon products of thermal maturation of shales, whereas gas generation capacity of carbonate source rocks is relatively moderate compared to their oil generation capacity. Therefore, marine shale is an important exploration target for unconventional oil and gas, yet marine carbonate is an important target for unconventional oils. The presence of appreciable carbonate minerals in shales can facilitate oil and gas generation likely by (1) enhancing oil expulsion, (2) facilitating decarboxylation of organic acid, and (3) catalysis. Pyrolysis data also support that molecular composition of thermogenic gas is not dominantly controlled by lithofacies of source rocks but mainly affected by maturation. Outcomes of this study demonstrate that marine organic-rich rocks within the Palaeozoic strata in the South China craton are critical prospecting targets for unconventional oil and gas.

Abstract Background Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have found that problematic mobile phone use, bedtime procrastination, sleep quality, and depressive symptoms are strongly associated. However, studies are inconsistent regarding whether problematic mobile phone use predicts depressive symptoms or vice versa, and sleep factors have been infrequently focused on in this regard. In addition, few studies have examined the longitudinal associations and directions of effects between these factors. Therefore, this study aims to explore the longitudinal relationship among problematic mobile phone use, bedtime procrastination, sleep quality, and depressive symptoms in college students. Methods Overall, 1181 college students completed questionnaires on problematic mobile phone use, bedtime procrastination, sleep quality, and depressive symptoms at two time points 12 months apart. A cross-lagged model was used to examine the longitudinal relationship between these factors. Results Cross-lagged analyses showed significant bidirectional relationships of problematic mobile phone use with bedtime procrastination and depressive symptoms. Additionally, there were also significant bidirectional relationships of sleep quality with bedtime procrastination and depressive symptoms. Problematic mobile phone use predicted subsequent sleep quality one-way, and bedtime procrastination predicted subsequent depressive symptoms one-way. Conclusions This study further expands our understanding of the longitudinal and bidirectional relationships among problematic mobile phone use, bedtime procrastination, sleep quality and depressive symptoms and helps school mental health educators design targeted interventions to reduce problematic mobile phone use, sleep problems, and depressive symptoms among college students.

BackgroundChronic inflammation is considered one of the main mechanisms leading to frailty. It has been demonstrated that tea consumption reduces chronic inflammation. Few epidemiological studies have investigated the association between tea consumption and frailty.ObjectiveThis study aimed to analyze the association between tea consumption and frailty in Chinese older adults.MethodsBetween March and May 2021, we enrolled 2,144 older adults aged ≥60 years in Jinan City, Shandong Province, China, using multi-stage stratified cluster sampling. We assessed tea consumption and frailty in older adults using the Tilburg Frailty Indicator (TFI) and the frequency of tea consumption, respectively. We applied multiple logistic regression analysis to examine the association between tea consumption and frailty, controlling for a set of potential covariates.ResultsThe prevalence of frailty among older Chinese adults was 38.3% (821/2,144). Tea consumption was categorized as daily (30.4%), occasionally (20.9%), and rarely or never (48.7%). As indicated by the fully adjusted model, daily tea consumption was associated with a lower prevalence of frailty (OR = 0.73, 95%CI = 0.57–0.94). However, this association only applied to men, younger older adults aged 60–79 years, rural residents, and regular participants in community activities. In addition, we observed a linear relationship between tea consumption and the prevalence of frailty (P for trend = 0.017).ConclusionsHigher tea consumption was associated with a lower prevalence of frailty in older adults, especially those men, older adults aged 60–79, rural residents, and individuals who regularly participated in community activities. Further longitudinal and experimental studies are needed to determine the causation between tea consumption and frailty.

BackgroundSeveral studies have shown that neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Parkinson’s disease [PD] and Alzheimer’s disease [AD]) are associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but the causality and direction of their associations remain unclear. Mendelian randomization (MR) studies have explored the causal effects of IBD on PD and AD. However, only a few studies examined this reverse association. Thus, this study aimed to explore whether there are causal associations of genetically predicted PD and AD with IBD, using a two-sample MR study.MethodsSummary statistics for IBD, ulcerative colitis (UC), and Crohn’s disease (CD) were derived from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis, which included the International IBD Genetics Consortium and the UK IBD Genetics Consortium (n=59,957). Genetic variants associated with the largest meta-analysis of GWAS of PD (n=1,474,097) and AD (n=455,258) were used as instrumental variables. We used multiple methods, including inverse variance weighted (IVW), weighted median (WM), MR-Egger regression, weighted mode, and Robust Adjusted Profile Score (RAPS) methods, to estimate the effects of genetically predicted PD and AD on IBD. To confirm the validity of the analysis, we also evaluated the pleiotropic effects, heterogeneity, and leave-one-out sensitivity analysis that drive causal associations.ResultsThe results of the IVW method, WM, and RAPS showed that genetically predicted PD was significantly associated with an increased risk of UC (odds ratio [OR]IVW=1.068, ORWM=1.107, ORRAPS=1.069, all P0.05), or statistical heterogeneity. The sensitivity analysis results of the leave-one-out sensitivity analysis showed that the causal effect estimations of genetically predicted PD and AD on IBD were robust.ConclusionsOur MR study corroborated a causal association between genetically predicted PD and IBD but did not support a causal effect of genetically predicted AD on IBD. More animal experiments or population-based observational studies are required to clarify the underlying mechanisms of PD and IBD.

BackgroundSleep status, including sleep quality and nap duration, may be associated with frailty and cognitive impairment in older adults. Older adults living in nursing homes may be more prone to physical and cognitive frailties. This study aimed to investigate the association between sleep quality and nap duration, and cognitive frailty among older adults living in nursing homes.MethodsThis study included 1,206 older adults aged ≥ 60 years from nursing homes in Hunan province, China. A simple frailty questionnaire (FRAIL scale) was used and Mini-Mental State Examination was conducted to assess physical frailty and cognitive impairment, respectively, to confirm cognitive frailty. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to assess the sleep quality. Nap duration was classified as follows: no, short (≤30 min), and long (>30 min) napping. Multinomial logistic regression was conducted to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI).ResultsThe prevalence of cognitive frailty among the older adults in nursing homes was 17.5%. Approximately 60.9% of the older adults had a poor sleep quality. Among the 1,206 participants, 43.9% did not take naps, 29.1% had short naps, and 26.9% had long naps. After adjusting for all covariates, poor sleep quality (OR 2.53; 95% CI 1.78–3.59; P < 0.001) and long nap duration (OR 1.77; 95% CI 1.19–2.64; P = 0.003) were associated with higher odds of cognitive frailty, but short nap duration (OR 0.60; 95% CI 0.40–0.89; P = 0.012) was associated with low prevalence of cognitive frailty.ConclusionPoor sleep quality and long nap duration are significantly associated with high risk of cognitive frailty among the older adults in nursing homes. Short nap duration was associated with low prevalence of cognitive frailty. However, these associations require further validation in older adults.Clinical trial registrationhttps://osf.io/57hv8.

The carbonylative transformation of ethylene oxide (EO) into methyl 3-hydroxypropionate (3-HPM) is a key process for the production of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO), which is currently viewed as one of the most promising monomers and intermediates in polyester and pharmaceuticals industry. In this work, a homogeneous reaction system using commercial Co2(CO)8 was first studied for the carbonylation of EO to 3-HPM. The catalytic behavior was related to the electronic environment of N on aromatic rings of ligands, where N with rich electron density induced a stronger coordination with Co center and higher EO transformation. A reaction order of 2.1 with respect to EO and 0.3 with respect to CO was unraveled based on the kinetics study. The 3-HPM yield reached 91.2% at only 40°C by Co2(CO)8 coordinated with 3-hydroxypyridine. However, Co-containing colloid was formed during the reaction, causing the tough separation and impossible recycling of samples. Concerning the sustainable utilization, Co particles immobilized on pre-treated carbon nanotubes (Co/CNT-C) were designed via an in situ reduced colloid method. It is remarkable that unlike conventional Co/CNT, Co/CNT-C was highly selective toward the transformation of EO to 3-HPM with a specific rate of 52.2 mmol·gCo-1·h-1, displaying a similar atomic efficiency to that of coordinated Co2(CO)8. After reaction, the supported Co/CNT-C catalyst could be easily separated from the liquid reaction mixture, leading to a convenient cyclic utilization.

ObjectivesThis study aimed to explore the longitudinal associations between eHealth literacy, health-promoting lifestyles, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among college students.MethodsFrom December 2019 (T1) to December 2020 (T2), we administered the eHealth literacy scale, Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12), and Short-Form Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile Scale to 1,181 college students in Jinan, China. Participants were recruited for 12 months for the two-stage survey.ResultsStable positive correlations were shown between eHealth literacy, health-promoting lifestyles, and HRQoL across time. The cross-lagged analysis showed that eHealth literacy at T1 predicted health-promoting lifestyles at T2 (β = 0.080, P = 0.006); however, health-promoting lifestyles at T1 did not predict eHealth literacy at T2 (β = −0.026, P = 0.499). HRQoL at T1 predicted health-promoting lifestyles at T2 (β = 0.147, P < 0.001); however, similar to the eHealth literacy finding, health-promoting lifestyles at T1 did not predict HRQoL at T2 (β = 0.045, P = 0.142). eHealth literacy was also bi-directionally associated with HRQoL, and the prediction effect of eHealth literacy at T1 to HRQoL at T2 (β = 0.078, P = 0.008) was slightly higher than the prediction effect of HRQoL at T1 to eHealth literacy at T2 (β = 0.074, P = 0.023).ConclusioneHealth literacy and HRQoL may be antecedents for college students' health-promoting lifestyles. There may be significant bi-directional relationships between eHealth literacy and HRQoL.

Background: Head and neck soft-tissue sarcomas are rare but aggressive malignancies. Definitive radiotherapy might be an alternative treatment choice in patients unfit for surgery with preservation of organ function and facial morphology. Whether definitive radiotherapy is comparable with surgery has not been fully demonstrated. In this study, we compared the prognosis of patients with radiotherapy-based treatment and with surgery-based treatment. Methods: From May 2014 to February 2021, patients with locally advanced head and neck soft-tissue sarcoma treated with either definitive radiotherapy-based treatment or radical surgery-based treatment were retrospectively enrolled. Clinical outcomes including tumor response, patients’ survival and acute treatment-related toxicities were evaluated. Kaplan–Meier curves with log-rank test were used to compare survival data. Cox regression analysis was used to explore prognostic factors. Results: A total of 24 patients (12 males and 12 females, 3 to 61 years old) were eligible for analysis. The median follow-up time was 49 (range: 6–96) months. In 16 patients receiving definitive radiotherapy-based treatment, 6 reached complete response. The survival curve showed that there was no statistically significant difference in overall survival (OS), distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), loco-regional relapse-free survival (LRRFS) and progression-free survival (PFS) between the two groups of patients (p = 0.35, p = 0.24, p = 0.48, p = 0.1, respectively). COX regression analysis showed that older age was associated with poor DMFS. There was no significant difference in grade 3–4 toxicities between the two groups. Conclusions: In cases of contradictions to surgery, refusal to surgery or failure to complete resection, chemoradiotherapy might be an alternative treatment option.

Abstract Ustilaginoidea virens, the causal agent of rice false smut, is an economically important filamentous fungal pathogen. A high-quality reference genome of U. virens promotes understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying its virulence and pathogenicity. Here, we report the first chromosome-level assembly of U. virens genome consisting of seven chromosomes ranging from 2.4 to 7.5 Mb. The assembly has dramatic improvements over previous assemblies, including considerably longer contigs, higher proportion of repetitive elements and more functionally annotated genes. Phylogenetic analyses revealed an extremely low intraspecific sequence divergence in U. virens. By contrast, intraspecific genome comparisons uncovered dynamic genomic alterations including massive structural variations and widespread lineage-specific regions (LSRs) among U. virens strains, which were mainly generated by recent burst of retrotransposons. Genomic plasticity created by structural variations and LSRs might drive rapid evolution of U. virens. High-quality mitochondrial genomes of eight U. virens strains exhibit size variations from 94 to 102 kb. Consistently, U. virens contains conserved lengths of exons and highly dynamic mobile introns, which contribute to intraspecific size variations due to gain/loss of homing endonuclease genes. This study highlights unique characteristics in nuclear and mitochondrial genomic divergence and provides new insights into genomic and mitochondrial evolution of U. virens.

This study aimed to verify the Chinese version of the Brief Assessment of Impaired Cognition Questionnaire (C-BASIC-Q), and provide a new tool for the future large-scale epidemiological investigation of cognitive function in China. From March to May 2021, a cross-sectional study of 2,144 Chinese community-dwelling older adults (men = 1,075, mean age = 72.01 years, SD = 6.96 years, ranging from 60–99 years) was conducted in Jinan. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed to evaluate the factor structure of the C-BASIC-Q. Convergent validity was evaluated by correlations with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were evaluated using Cronbach's alpha and retest correlations in a sub-sample (n = 129). Linear regression was used to analyze the impact of demographic factors on the MMSE and C-BASIC-Q scores. Measurement invariance was evaluated using a multi-group confirmatory factor analysis. The mean C-BASIC-Q score was 15.94 (SD = 3.43). Factor analysis suggested a three-factor structure of C-BASIC-Q (self-report, orientation, and informant report). The C-BASIC-Q score was significantly positively associated with the MMSE score, showing good convergent validity. Cronbach's alpha of the C-BASIC-Q was 0.862, and the test-retest correlation coefficient was significant (r = 0.952, p < 0.001), indicating good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Measurement invariance analysis showed that C-BASIC-Q had configural, metric, and scalar invariance across sex, age, residence, education level and marital status. C-BASIC-Q was less affected by age, residence, education, and marital status than the MMSE. In summary, the C-BASIC-Q had good reliability, validity, and measurement invariance, and is a valid tool for evaluating cognitive functioning in Chinese community-dwelling older adults.
