4. A Few Charged Residues in Galectin‐3′s Folded and Disordered Regions Regulate Phase Separation.

Abstract

Proteins with intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) often undergo phase separation to control their functions spatiotemporally. Changing the pH alters the protonation levels of charged sidechains, which in turn affects the attractive or repulsive force for phase separation. In a cell, the rupture of membrane‐bound compartments, such as lysosomes, creates an abrupt change in pH. However, how proteins' phase separation reacts to different pH environments remains largely unexplored. Here, using extensive mutagenesis, NMR spectroscopy, and biophysical techniques, it is shown that the assembly of galectin‐3, a widely studied lysosomal damage marker, is driven by cation‐π interactions between positively charged residues in its folded domain with aromatic residues in the IDR in addition to π–π interaction between IDRs. It is also found that the sole two negatively charged residues in its IDR sense pH changes for tuning the condensation tendency. Also, these two residues may prevent this prion‐like IDR domain from forming rapid and extensive aggregates. These results demonstrate how cation‐π, π–π, and electrostatic interactions can regulate protein condensation between disordered and structured domains and highlight the importance of sparse negatively charged residues in prion‐like IDRs. Abstract

Harvesting low grade hydrodynamic energy is attracting growing interest. Droplet generators have recently emerged as promising harvesting devices. However, toward practical utilization, their power density and energy conversion efficiency still warrant further improvement. In addition, the performance of droplet generators typically degrades when in contact with ambient water, significantly limiting their applications considering that they, by definition, are constantly exposed to water. This work reports a field‐enhanced droplet electricity generator (FE‐DEG) that significantly address these challenges. Using the field effect induced by a bias voltage to store high volumetric charge in the dielectric layer, the amount of charge that transfers during droplet impinging is significantly increased, which simultaneously improves the instantaneous power density and energy conversion efficiency. In addition, the performance of the generator can be reliably set by the external bias and remains stable after repeated immersion in bulk water, and even in some harsh chemical conditions. 30. Cholesteric flakes in motion driven by the elastic force from nematic liquid crystals

Abstract

The paper presents a methodology to control the motion and orientation of suspended reflective cholesteric flakes in a nematic liquid crystal (LC) matrix. The flakes exhibit a dielectric anisotropy which controls their alignment with their in-plane axes parallel to an external electrical dc field. The elastic forces imposed by the LC host affect the switching behavior of the flakes and take care of the realignment to the planar state as soon as the dc field is switched off. When the LC host has a positive dielectric anisotropy, the switching voltage of the flakes is reduced by a factor of 2 in comparison with a LC host with negative dielectric anisotropy or in comparison with an isotropic host. We discovered that the LC host further regulates the back relaxation of cholesteric to return to the planar state upon retrieving the electric field. Whereas, in the isotropic fluid, flakes do not exhibit a preferred orientation when relaxed. Based on this newly proposed principle, we demonstrated its application as an optical switch for smart windows. Depending on the pitch of the cholesteric helix of the flakes, the light of a preset wavelength is reflected. Upon application of an electric field, the embedded flakes rotate their planes perpendicular to the substrate and consequently the incident light becomes fully transmitted without reflection or scattering of light.

Abstract

Novel conducting polymer nanocomposites of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) were prepared through both chemical and electrochemical polymerization methods. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. In both cases, NCC could be effectively incorporated into the polymerized PEDOT to form uniform conducting polymer nanocomposites that exhibit good electrochemical properties. With NCC acting as the only dopant in the electrochemical polymerization process, pure NCC doped PEDOT (PEDOT/NCC) with a unique nanostructure could be synthesized through the simple electrodeposition method. The electrochemically deposited PEDOT/NCC nanocomposite showed very low electrochemical impedance, large charge storage capacity and good electrocatalytic activity. Based on the excellent catalytic activity of the PEDOT/NCC nanocomposite towards the oxidation of dopamine, a sensitive amperometric sensor for the detection of dopamine with a detection limit of 69 nM was developed.

This article introduced a method of designing rear mounted fluid coupling transmissions for deceleration with heavy power, as well as innovation in its architecture and difficulty in manufacture. All of these are valuable for the designers and researchers in fluid coupling transmissions. On the other hand, we have combined finite element method and computer science in the stress analysis of pump wheel, which shows consistent result in the calculation and practical use.
