11. An Effective Strategy to Enable Argyrodite Sulfides as Superb Solid-State Electrolytes: Safeguarding Remarkable Ionic Conductivity and Interfacial Stability with Electrodes

Abstract

The argyrodite sulfides are getting more and more attractive as highly promising solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) for high-performance all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs), owing to their high ionic conductivity, adequate plasticity, and decent mechanical strength. However, their poor incompatibility with Li metal anode and high voltage cathodes and as well as serious sensitivity to air significantly hinder their practical applications. Herein, we have devised an effective strategy to overcome these challenging shortcomings through modification of chalcogen chemistry under the guidance of theoretical modeling. The resultant Li6.25PS4O1.25Cl0.75 delivered excellent electrochemical compatibility with both pure Li anode and high-voltage LiCoO2 cathode, without detrimental impact upon the superb ionic conductivity of the pristine sulfide. Furthermore, the current SSE also exhibited highly improved stability to oxygen and moisture in air, with further advantage being more insulating to electrons. The remarkably enhanced compatibility with electrodes is attributed to in situ formation of solid anode electrolyte interphase (AEI) and cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layers. The formation of in situ AEI enabled ultra-stable Li plating/stripping at a record high current density up to 1 mAh cm-2 in Li|Li6.25PS4O1.25Cl0.75|Li symmetric cells over 1800 hours. The in situ CEI facilitated protection of the SSE from decomposition at elevated voltage. Consequently, the synergistic effect of AEI and CEI helped the LiCoO2|Li6.25PS4O1.25Cl0.75|Li battery cell to achieve markedly better cycling stability than that using the pristine Li6PS5Cl as SSE, at a high areal loading of the active cathode material (4 mg cm-2). This work adds a desirable SSE in the argyrodite sulfide family, so that high-performance solid battery cells could even be fabricated in ambient air.

Abstract

Understanding the fundamental properties of buried interfaces in perovskite photovoltaics is of paramount importance to the enhancement of device efficiency and stability. Nevertheless, accessing buried interfaces poses a sizeable challenge because of their non-exposed feature. Herein, the mystery of the buried interface in full device stacks is deciphered by combining advanced in situ spectroscopy techniques with a facile lift-off strategy. By establishing the microstructure-property relations, the basic losses at the contact interfaces are systematically presented, and it is found that the buried interface losses induced by both the sub-microscale extended imperfections and lead-halide inhomogeneities are major roadblocks toward improvement of device performance. The losses can be considerably mitigated by the use of a passivation-molecule-assisted microstructural reconstruction, which unlocks the full potential for improving device performance. The findings open a new avenue to understanding performance losses and thus the design of new passivation strategies to remove imperfections at the top surfaces and buried interfaces of perovskite photovoltaics, resulting in substantial enhancement in device performance.

24. P2-type Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 Cathode Material with Excellent Rate and Cycling Performance for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract

P2-type Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 is an air-stable cathode material for sodium-ion batteries. However, it suffers irreversible P2-O2 phase transition in 4.2-V plateau and shows poor cycling stability and rate capability within this plateau. To evaluate the practicability of this material in 2.3–4.1 V voltage range, single-crystal micro-sized P2-type Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 with high rate capability and cycling stability is synthesized via polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-combustion method. The electrochemical performance is evaluated by galvanostatic charge-discharge tests. The kinetics of Na+ intercalation/deintercalation is studied detailly with potential intermittent titration technique (PITT), galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The discharge capacity at 0.1 C in 2.3–4.1 V is 87.6 mAh g−1. It can deliver 91.5% capacity at 40 C rate and keep 89% after 650 cycles at 5C. The calculated theoretical energy density of full cell with hard carbon anode is 210 Wh kg−1. The moderate energy density associated with high power density and long cycle life is acceptable for load adjustment of new-energy power, showing the prospect of practical application.

30. From anti-perovskite to double anti-perovskite: lattice chemistry basis for super-fast transportation of Li+ ions in cubic solid lithium halogen-chalcogenides

Abstract

Using a materials genome approach on the basis of the density functional theory, we have formulated a new class of inorganic electrolytes for fast diffusion of Li+ ions, through fine-tuning of lattice chemistry of anti-perovskite structures. Systematic modelling has been carried out to elaborate the structural stability and ion transportation characteristics in Li3AX based cubic anti-perovskite, through alloying on the chalcogen lattice site (A) and alternative occupancy of the halogen site (X). In addition to identifying effective ways for reduction of diffusion barriers for Li+ ions in anti-perovskite phases via suitable designation of lattice occupancy, the current theoretical study leads to discovery and synthesis of a new phase with a double-anti-perovskite structure, Li6OSI2 (or Li3O0.5S0.5I). Such a new compound is of fairly low activation barrier for Li+ diffusion, together with a wide energy band gap to hinder conduction of electrons.

Abstract

It is of great importance to develop inorganic solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity, thus enabling solid state Li-ion batteries to address the notorious safety issue about the current technology due to use of highly flammable liquid organic electrolytes. On the basis of systematic first principles modelling, we have formulated new inorganic electrolytes with ultra-low activation energies for long-distance diffusion of Li+ ions, through alloying in the cubic Li6PA5X chalcogenides (chalcogen A; halogen X). We find that the long-distance transportation of Li+ is dictated by inter-octahedral diffusion, as the activation energy for Li+ to migrate over a Li6A octahedron is minimal. The inter-octahedral diffusion barrier for Li+ is largely dependent on the interaction with chalcogen anions in the compound. Radical reduction of diffusion barrier for Li+ ions can be realized through isovalent substitution of S using elements of lower electronegativity, together with smaller halogen ions on the X site.

Abstract

Heterogeneous catalysts promoting efficient production of reactive species and dynamically stabilized electron transfer mechanisms for peroxomonosulfates (PMS) still lack systematic investigation. Herein, a more stable magnetic layered double oxides (CFLDO/N‐C), was designed using self‐polymerization and high temperature carbonization of dopamine. The CFLDO/N‐C/PMS system effectively activated PMS to remove 99% (k = 0.737 min−1) of tetracycline (TC) within 10 min. The CFLDO/N‐C/PMS system exhibited favorable resistance to inorganic anions and natural organics, as well as satisfactory suitability for multiple pollutants. The magnetic properties of the catalyst facilitated the separation of catalysts from the liquid phase, resulting in excellent reproducibility and effectively reducing the leaching of metal ions. An electronic bridge was constructed between cobalt (the active platform of the catalyst) and PMS, inducing PMS to break the O–O bond to generate the active species. The combination of static analysis and dynamic evolution confirmed the effective adsorption of PMS on the catalyst surface as well as the strong radical‐assisted electron transfer process. Eventually, we further identified the sites where the reactive species attacked the TC and evaluated the toxicity of the intermediates. These findings offer innovative insights into the rapid degradation of pollutants achieved by transition metals in SR‐AOPs and its mechanistic elaboration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

36. Root Aeration Promotes Cadmium Accumulation in Rice by Regulating Iron Uptake-Associated System

Abstract

Different cadmium (Cd)-accumulated rice genotypes (Erjiunan 1 and Fupin 36) were used to explore the effect of rice rhizosphere aeration on Cd uptake and accumulation. Aeration in the nutrient solution influenced the agronomic characteristics induced by Cd-stress, such as the increases of rice root length and root vigor, but the reductions of plant height and shoot dry weight. Aeration also alleviated the decreasing effects of Cd stress on antioxidant enzyme activities and soluble protein, malonaldehyde and nicotianamine contents in rice. Moreover, with aeration treatment, the accumulation and bioavailability of metal elements changed significantly, with a Cd increase and an Fe reduction in both rice genotypes. In addition, at the molecular level, aeration upregulated the expression of Fe-inducible genes (such as OsIRT1, OsNRAMP1, OsYSL15 and OsNAS3). Furthermore, as a Cd2+/Fe2+ transporter, the high transcription level of OsNRAMP1 can elevate the Cd uptake and translocation in rice due to the Fe reduction caused by aeration and Cd-exposure, which indicated that OsNRAMP1 might play a crucial role in the effect of aeration on Cd uptake and accumulation.
