Hydrothermal technology (HT) has received much attention in recent years as a process to convert wet organic waste into hydrochar. The aqueous phase (HTAP) produced by this process is still a burden and has become a bottleneck issue for HT process development. During geomagnetically active periods plasma is transported from the magnetotail into the inner magnetosphere to become the ring current. The transpot of plasma into the ring current occurs at different spatial and temporal scales, from global quasi-steady convection to bursty bulk flows (BBFs), with typical cross-tail extents of 1-3 Earth radii. During its enhancement, the ring current plays a critical role in magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling. Ring current ions build up plasma pressure in the inner magnetosphere and will drive field-aligned currents which must close in the ionosphere, while electrons will lead to diffuse precipitation and enhanced ionospheric conductance which shape the ionospheric path of current closure. Current closure in the ionosphere will couple to the thermospheric neutral population, via Joule heating, and alter the dynamics of the plasmasphere, via the penetration electric field in the inner magnetosphere. Understanding the relative role of convection at different spatial scales in both the buildup of the ring current and its broader effects on geospace coupling is an area of active interest and one of the core science questions of the Center for Geospace Storms. In this talk I will describe how addressing this question has informed the development of the Multiscale Atmosphere Geospace Environment (MAGE) model and highlight several recent modeling studies which illustrate the central role of mesoscale processes.

Ileocolonoscopy (IC) detects mucosal inflammation and magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) detects transmural inflammation in Crohn disease (CD). We aimed to evaluate the relationship between the simplified magnetic resonance index of activity (MARIAs) and measures of inflammation by IC in children with newly diagnosed CD.Retrospective review of 140 patients 6-18 years of age with CD who had baseline IC and MRE within 5 weeks of diagnosis. MARIAs was calculated for each intestinal segment (terminal ileum [TI], ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, rectum), defined as (1 × thickness3 mm) + (1 × edema) + (1 × fat stranding) + (2 × ulcers). Sensitivity and specificity were derived using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves to compare MARIAs to IC findings.Using IC as the reference standard, the cutoff MARIAs ≥1 identified TI segments with active inflammation with 84% sensitivity, 73% specificity, 85% positive predictive value (PPV), 70% negative predictive value (NPV), and area under the curve (AUC) 0.782 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.689-0.876). The cutoff MARIAs ≥2 identified TI segments with severe lesions with 87% sensitivity, 76% specificity, 87% PPV, 76% NPV, and AUC 0.814 (95% CI 0.712-0.916). There was poor sensitivity for all colonic segments.The MARIAs is feasible and accurate in reflecting disease activity in the TI, but not in the colon, in children with newly diagnosed CD. Although the MARIAs may be useful for monitoring TI disease activity over time, full assessment continues to require both IC and MRE.

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) has been recognized as a promising sewage sludge (SS) treatment technology for effective pathogen elimination, bioenergy recovery, organic contaminant destruction and volume reduction. However, the solid product (hydrochar) of SS after HTC as fuel has the problems of high ash content, high nitrogen content and low calorific value. The aqueous phase (AP) produced is still considered a burden and has become a bottleneck in the development of HTC. In this study, co-HTC of SS with spent mushroom substrate (SMS) is conducted, and the fuel properties of hydrochar and the quality of the AP as a liquid fertilizer are investigated. In comparison with hydrochar of single SS, the energy yield and higher heating value of the hydrochar from co-HTC were significantly increased by 12.1-44.8 % and 33.2-137.8 %, respectively, reaching their maximum of 72.75 % and14.98 MJ/kg, respectively. Co-HTC can improve safe handling, storage and transportation, and combustion performance of hydrochar. Furthermore, the AP of co-HTC could significantly increase the biomass of pakchoi, which was 140.9 % and 90.7 % of AP from single SS and Hoagland nutrition solution (represents commercial fertilizer), respectively. The AP of co-HTC as fertilizer can recover 62.03-64.65 % nitrogen from SS and SMS. These findings suggest that co-HTC of SMS with SS is a promising technology for the conversion SS into renewable resource products for fuels and N-rich liquid fertilizer while also significantly improving fuel and fertilizer quality.

Subauroral polarization streams (SAPS) typically refer to an enhanced westward plasma flow channel in the duskside subauroral ionosphere. SAPS overlap with the low-latitude part of downward Region-2 field-aligned currents (FACs). The relatively low subauroral conductance in this region requires a strong electric field for current closure, which drives the fast sunward plasma flow. Observations have shown dynamic variability of SAPS under various solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions, which are related to the variability of FACs and auroral precipitation, as well as their source regions in the ring current and plasmasheet. In this study, we use satellite observations and numerical simulations with the state-of-the-art Multiscale Atmosphere Geospace Environment (MAGE) model to investigate: 1) The role of diffuse electron precipitation in the formation of SAPS; 2) SAPS variability under IMF BY; and 3) Dawnside (as opposed to the more conventional duskside) SAPS as a unique feature of major geomagnetic storms. With data-model comparison, we will demonstrate that SAPS result from the different behaviors of ring current ions and plasma sheet electrons, and the corresponding self-consistent response of the ionosphere-thermosphere system via electrodynamic and particle coupling with the magnetosphere. We conclude that SAPS distribution and variability represent a fundamental feature of the geospace response to solar disturbances during storm time.

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a promising carbon-neutral technology for converting sewage sludge (SS) and agricultural waste into energy. However, HTC-generated aqueous phase (AP) impedes the development of the former. This study investigated the potential of SS with rice husk (RH) and wheat straw (WS) co-HTC to form hydrochar and AP as substitutes for fuel and chemical fertilizer, respectively. Compared with single SS hydrochar, the yield of co-HTC-based hydrochar and higher heating value significantly increased by 10.9%-21.6% and 4.2%-182.7%, reaching a maximum of 72.6% and 14.7 MJ/kg, respectively. Co-HTC improves the safe handling, storage and transportation, and combustion performance of hydrochar. The total nitrogen concentration in AP-SS was 2575 mg/L, accounting for 67.7% of that found in SS. Co-HTC decreased and increased the amine and phenolic components of AP, respectively. AP-SS-RH and AP-SS-WS significantly increased pakchoi dry weight by 45.5% and 49.4%, respectively, compared with AP-SS. The results of the hydroponic experiments with AP instead of chemical fertilizers revealed that AP-SS did not reduce pakchoi dry weight by replacing20% chemical fertilizers. However, AP-SS-RH or AP-SS-WS replaced 60% chemical fertilizers. Therefore, the co-HTC of SS and agricultural waste increased the AP substitution of chemical fertilizer from 20% to 60%. These findings suggest that the co-HTC of agricultural waste with SS is a promising technology for converting SS into renewable resource products for fuels and N-rich liquid fertilizer while significantly improving fuel and fertilizer quality.

Changes in hydrological cycles and water resources will certainly be a direct consequence of climate change, making the forecast of hydrological components essential for water resource assessment and management. This research was thus carried out to estimate water balance components and water yield under current and future climate change scenarios and trends in the Guder Catchment of the Upper Blue Nile, Ethiopia, using the soil and water assessment tool (SWAT). Hydrological modeling was efficaciously calibrated and validated using the SUFI-2 algorithm of the SWAT model. The results showed that water yield varied from 926 mm to 1340 mm per year (1986–2016). Regional climate model (RCM) data showed, under representative concentration pathways (RCP 8.5), that the precipitation will decrease by up to 14.4% relative to the baseline (1986–2016) precipitation of 1228 mm/year, while the air temperature will rise under RCP 8.5 by +4.4 °C in the period from 2057 to 2086, possibly reducing the future basin water yield output, suggesting that the RCP 8.5 prediction will be warmer than RCP 4.5. Under RCP 8.5, the total water yield from 2024 to 2086 may be reduced by 3.2 mm per year, and a significant trend was observed. Local government agencies can arrange projects to solve community water-related issues based on these findings.

Background：Groundwater serves as the drinking water source, which chemical components directly affect human health. Different regions own their groundwater hydro-chemical characteristics based on various geological, hydro-geological conditions, human activities. From the perspective of human health, it is necessary to select groundwater quality health risk assessment （GQHR） factors combined with hydro-chemical characteristics of different regions.Methods：In this paper, taking Tongzhou of Beijing,China as the study area, according to the groundwater hydro-chemical characteristics, NO3-, NO2-, NH4+ and F- were extracted as assessment factors to evaluate the GQHR. Based on GQHR results, the formation and concentration characteristics of health risk factors and the prominent controlling role of influencing risk distribution were explored from natural and human factors. Furthermore, the targeted measures to prevent the increase of groundwater health risk were put forward.Results：Assessment factors: NO3-, NO2- and NH4+ are derived by human factors, such as sewage irrigation, fertilization, and F- stems from irrigation of geogenic high fluoride groundwater and fertilizer use. Still, their distribution is affected by natural factors (geology, geomorphology, and climate). The GQHR follows the order: children > adult females > adult males. The low and medium risk regions are located in upper groundwater, which are mainly controlled by natural factors (groundwater depth, aquifer medium, hydraulic conductivity coefficient, etc.) The measures to prevent the increase of groundwater health risk are to control the pollution sources and reduce the change of groundwater hydrodynamic conditions. The high-risk regions are located in eastern part of the study area, which are affected by both natural and human factors. The preventative measures are to reduce pollution caused by human factors and scientific groundwater resource exploitation and management. Conclusions：In this study, corresponding preventative and control measures were proposed for health risks caused by different dominant control effects. Meanwhile, the research results provide a scientific basis for the safety of groundwater supply and environmental exposure in this area. The research ideas and methods can be used as a reference for similar studies.

Auroral precipitation plays an important role in magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere (MIT) coupling by enhancing ionospheric ionization and conductivity at high latitudes. Diffuse electron precipitation refers to scattered electrons from the plasma sheet that are lost in the ionosphere. Diffuse precipitation makes the largest contribution to the total precipitation energy flux and is expected to have substantial impacts on the ionospheric conductance and affect the electrodynamic coupling between the magnetosphere and ionosphere-thermosphere. Kinetic theory and observational analysis also demonstrate that diffuse precipitation is subject to multiple reflection effects, i.e. secondary electrons produced by the primary precipitation are reflected between the north and south hemispheres multiple times before they are fully lost in the atmosphere. In this study, we make use of the newly developed Multiscale Atmosphere-Geospace Environment (MAGE) model developed at the NASA DRIVE Science Center for Geospace Storms (CGS) to explore the role of diffuse electron precipitation in MIT coupling. Diffuse precipitation in MAGE is derived from the electron distribution in the Rice Convection Model (RCM), a ring current model that solves for energy dependent drifts of electrons and ions. Diffuse precipitation, together with mono-energetic electron precipitation based on parameterization of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) parameters from the Grid Agnostic MHD with Extended Research Applications (GAMERA) magnetosphere model, are input to the Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamic General Circulation Model (TIEGCM) to calculate the ionospheric ionization rate and conductivity and height-integrated conductance. With controlled numerical experiments, we investigate 1. how the diffuse precipitation affects the location and structure of a mesoscale ionospheric convection process, i.e., subauroral polarization streams (SAPS); 2. How multiple reflection effects impact the ionosphere-thermosphere and their coupling with the magnetosphere. Our study demonstrates that diffuse electron precipitation plays a critical role in determining the location and structure of SAPS. The multiple reflection effects make diffuse precipitation number flux and energy flux a few times higher than the unmodified precipitation, resulting in a greatly enhanced auroral ionospheric conductance, lower cross polar cap potential, higher total field-aligned currents, and changes in global thermospheric winds and temperature. Therefore, diffuse electron precipitation has both local and global impacts on MIT coupling.

Based on the rapid development of e-commerce, major promotional events and holidays can lead to explosive growth in market demand and place significant pressure on distribution systems. In this study, we considered a distribution system in which products are first transported to transfer satellites from a central depot and then delivered to customers from the transfer satellites. We modeled this distribution problem as a two-echelon vehicle routing problem with demand blowout (2E-VRPDB). We adopt a time-division distribution strategy to address massive delivery demand in two phases by offering incentives to customers who accept flexible delivery dates. We propose a hybrid fireworks algorithm (HFWA) to solve the 2E-VRPDB model. This model fuses an optimal cutting algorithm with an improved fireworks algorithm. To demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed HFWA, we conducted comparative analysis on a genetic algorithm and ant colony algorithm using a VRP example set. Finally, we applied the proposed model and HFWA to solve a distribution problem for the Jingdong Mall in Chengdu, China. The computational results demonstrate that the proposed approach can effectively reduce logistical costs and maintain a high service level.

This article examines data from the Shihuiyao, Nierji, Tongmeng, Jiangqiao, and Dalai hydrological stations in the Nen River basin to understand the hydrological processes occurring in the catchments. Daily precipitation and runoff data from 1955 to 1973 were combined using the smoothed minima trial method to determine the surface runoff concentration time. Then, a genetic algorithm was used to optimize the parameters and obtain an optimal empirical formula. An improved empirical formula was implemented with the genetic algorithm and optimized parameters then incorporated variable average rainfall intensity, correlation between basin area, surface runoff average concentration time, and average rainfall intensity. Finally, an optimized empirical formula (using genetic algorithm to optimize the parameters) and improved empirical formula (incorporating variable average rainfall intensity) were tested by using the daily precipitation and runoff data from the Baishan and Hongshi hydrological stations of the Second Songhua River. The results show that an optimized and improved formula can be used to more accurately estimate hydrologic conditions in the Nen River. Therefore, the improved formula is an efficient method for calculating surface runoff concentration time. Surface runoff concentration time is an important basis for differentiating source waters, which include surface runoff and underground runoff.

Microporous polymer membranes have received extensive attention in the membrane separation field based on the advantage of high gas permeance and low cost. However, there are a few reports of microporous polyacrylate membranes fabricated by interfacial polymerization (IP), and the formation mechanism and influence factor of the microporous structure is rarely illuminated. In this work, thin-film polyacrylate membrane with circular microporous morphology were prepared by IP method with cyclodextrin and acyl chloride as the aqueous and oil phase monomer respectively for effective gas separation. The effects of the aqueous and organic phase monomer structure and concentration, the concentration and type of alkali in the aqueous solution on the membrane morphology and gas separation performance were investigated in detail. As a result, the polyacrylate membrane fabricated by β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) with optimal content of NaOH in the aqueous phase formed the special circular microporous structure by the scanning electronic microscope (SEM) characterization. The resulting membrane showed CO2 permeance of 200 GPU with CO2/N2 ideal separation selectivity of 10.53. This work provides an effective strategy to fabricate high performance polyacrylate membrane by regulating the monomer structure and the alkali concentration in the aqueous phenol solution with IP method, which would inspire the exploration of other phenolic monomer for the assembly of microporous polymer membranes for gas separation or seawater desalination.

Purpose To develop and clinically evaluate a pediatric knee magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique based on volumetric fast spin-echo (3DFSE) and compare its diagnostic performance, image quality, and imaging time to that of a conventional 2D protocol. Materials and Methods A 3DFSE sequence was modified and combined with a compressed sensing-based reconstruction resolving multiple image contrasts, a technique termed T2 Shuffling (T2Sh). With Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval, 28 consecutive children referred for 3T knee MRI prospectively underwent a standard clinical knee protocol followed by T2Sh. T2Sh performance was assessed by two readers blinded to diagnostic reports. Interpretive discrepancies were resolved by medical record chart review and consensus between the readers and an orthopedic surgeon. Image quality was evaluated by rating anatomic delineation, with 95% confidence interval. A Wilcoxon rank-sum test assessed the null hypothesis that T2Sh structure delineation compared to conventional 2D is unchanged. Intraclass correlation coefficients were calculated for interobserver agreement. Imaging time of the conventional protocol and T2Sh was compared. Results There was 81% and 87% concordance between T2Sh reports and diagnostic reports, respectively, for each reader. Upon consensus review, T2Sh had 93% sensitivity and 100% specificity compared to clinical reports for detection of clinically relevant findings. The 95% confidence interval of diagnostic or better rating was 95–100%, with 34–80% interobserver agreement. There was no significant difference in structure delineation between T2Sh and 2D, except for the retinaculum (P < 0.05), where 2D was preferred. Typical imaging time for T2Sh and the conventional exam was 7 and 13 minutes, respectively. Conclusion A single-sequence pediatric knee exam is feasible with T2Sh, providing multiplanar, reformattable 4D images. Level of Evidence 2 J. Magn. Reson. Imaging 2016;00:000–000.

Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM) as one of potential next generation membrane materials for gas separation has attracted great interests due to its ultra-permeable characteristics. Herein, a novel bis(phenyl)fluorene-based PIMs (Cardo-PIM-1) based on 9,9-bis(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl) fluorene (BDPF), 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile (TFTPN) and spirocyclic 5,5′,6,6′-tetrahydroxy-3,3′,3,3′-tetramethylspirobisindane (TTSBI) were prepared vis dibenzodioxane polymerization reaction, and then the functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNTs) were incorporated into Cardo-PIM-1 to fabricate mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with solution mixing method for CO2 separation. The structure analysis indicated that the MWCNTs were cut into short ropes and the amino groups were incorporated into the nanotubes surface after treated with acid mixtures followed by ethylenediamine modification. FTIR spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurement confirmed the formation of Cardo-PIM-1 macromolecule. BET and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) analysis exhibited that Cardo-PIM-1 contained larger pore-size distribution and fractional free volume (FFV), and preferential CO2 adsorption capacity over N2 compared with that of PIM-1. This work investigated the structure of polymer as well as the effect of nanofillers in the gas separation performance. High CO2 permeability of 2.9 × 104 Barrer with a desirable CO2/N2 separation factor of 24.2 was achieved using the MMMs with 7.5 wt% f-MWCNTs loading, which were among the best performance for CO2 separation. The Cardo-PIM-1/f-MWCNTs MMMs will provide a promising alternative in industrial flue gas separation and CO2 capture process.

This study performed a rationality analysis of the delay time and embedding dimension value during phase space reconstruction in hydrological series and the effect on their chaotic characteristics. Using a monthly average runoff time series from the Ayanqian station (upstream) and the Jiangqiao station (midstream) in the Nen River Basin, we reached the following regularity conclusions. 1 Based on the flood season (4 months) in the Nen River Basin, we can deduce that the correlation sequence length for the runoff is 4~5 months, i.e., the delay time =3 or 4 is a reasonable choice. 2 Learn from the predictability experiment results for the monthly rainfall time series, we know that the calculation results of the G-P algorithm for the dimension of runoff series for the Nen River Basin are reasonable, i.e., the embedding dimension is no more than seven. 3 the most suitable parameters for the phase space reconstruction and its chaotic characteristic index in the Nen River Basin are as follows: delay time = 3~4, embedding dimension = 6~7, correlation dimension = 2.90~3.00, maximum Lyapunov index = 0.24~0.32, and the forecast time is 3~4 months.

Corticosteroid treatment of paediatric leukaemia patients can lead to osteonecrosis (ON). We determined whether bone marrow oedema (BME) is an early sign of progressive ON and eventual bone collapse. In a retrospective study, two radiologists reviewed MR imaging characteristics of 47 early stage epiphyseal ON in 15 paediatric and adolescent leukaemia patients. Associations between BME on initial imaging studies and subchondral fracture, disease progression and bone collapse were assessed by Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel tests. Differences in time to progression and bone collapse between lesions with and without oedema were assessed by log rank tests. Forty-seven occurrences of ON were located in weight bearing joints, with 77% occurring in the femur. Seventeen lesions progressed to collapse, two lesions worsened without collapse, and 28 remained stable or improved. A novel, in situ simultaneous reduction-hydrolysis technique (SRH) is developed for fabrication of TiO2--graphene hybrid nanosheets in a binary ethylenediamine (En)/H2O solvent. The SRH technique is based on the mechanism of the simultaneous reduction of graphene oxide (GO) into graphene by En and the formation of TiO2 nanoparticles through hydrolysis of titanium (IV) (ammonium lactato) dihydroxybis, subsequently in situ loading onto graphene through chemical bonds (Ti–O–C bond) to form 2D sandwich-like nanostructure. The dispersion of TiO2 hinders the collapse and restacking of exfoliated sheets of graphene during reduction process. In contrast with prevenient G-TiO2 nanocomposites, abundant Ti3+ is detected on the surface of TiO2 of the present hybrid, caused by reducing agent En. The Ti3+ sites on the surface can serve as sites for trapping photogenerated electrons to prevent recombination of electron–hole pairs. The high photocatalytic activity of G-TiO2 hybrid is confirmed by photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to valuable hydrocarbons (CH4 and C2H6) in the presence of water vapor. The synergistic effect of the surface-Ti3+ sites and graphene favors the generation of C2H6, and the yield of the C2H6 increases with the content of incorporated graphene. The work may open a new doorway for new significant application of graphene for selectively catalytic C–C coupling reaction

Purpose To develop a fast and robust method to resolve phase ambiguity in dual-echo Dixon imaging. Methods A major challenge in dual-echo Dixon imaging is to estimate the phase error resulting from field inhomogeneity. In this work, a binary quadratic optimization program was formulated to resolve the phase ambiguity. A projected power method was developed to efficiently solve the optimization problem. Both the 1-peak fat model and 6-peak fat model were applied to three-dimensional (3D) datasets. Additionally, the proposed method was extended to dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications using the 6-peak fat model. With institutional review board (IRB) approval and patient consent/assent, the proposed method was evaluated and compared with region growing on 29 consecutive 3D high-resolution patient datasets. Results Fast and robust water/fat separation was achieved by the proposed method in different representative 3D datasets and dynamic 3D datasets. Superior water/fat separation was achieved using the 6-peak fat model compared with the 1-peak fat model. Compared to region growing, the proposed method reduced water/fat swaps from 76 to 7% of the patient cohort. Conclusion The proposed method can achieve fast and robust phase error estimation in dual-echo Dixon imaging. Sodium caseinate (SC) cross-linked by microbial transglutaminase (MTGase) for encapsulating microalgal oil was investigated. Protein cross-linking was evidenced in the SDS-PAGE graph. The emulsifying properties of SC depended on the cross-linked time with MTGase. The emulsifying activity and stability indexes of SC increased with the cross-linking time of 30 to 90 min (P30 to P90), and then declined with longer cross-linked time of 180 to 420 min (P180 to P420). The P30 to P90 as wall material for microencapsulation was superior to P180 to P420 and control sample. The microcapsules prepared with P30 to P90 showed more than 97% of microencapsulation efficiency in contrast to about 90% with the P180 to P420. During storage, the microcapsules prepared with P30 to P90 exhibited higher oxidative stability as compared with other microcapsules. A sustained release of microalgal oil was observed, and core release was time dependent and affected by cross-linking degree. Results showed that the powdered microalgal oil prepared with P30 to P90 demonstrated enhanced physicochemical properties and oxidative stability. Practical Application: The novel method using cross-linked proteins as wall material induced by microbial transglutaminase in food industry for sensitive ingredients could convert microcapsules into a stable form, which would lead to its more widespread utilization as a kind of food additive.

The present studies were done to investigate the effect of long-term nicotine treatment against nigrostriatal damage in non-human primates. Monkeys were administered nicotine in drinking water for 6 months to provide chronic but intermittent delivery as with smoking. Plasma nicotine levels ranged from 10 to 15 ng/mL, which were within the range in cigarette smokers. Animals were then lesioned with low doses of the dopaminergic neurotoxin MPTP for several months while nicotine was continued. The results showed that levels of striatal tyrosine hydroxylase, dopamine transporter, vesicular monoamine transporter, dopamine and nicotinic receptors were greater in nicotine-treated MPTP-lesioned primates than in lesioned animals not receiving nicotine. Nicotine had no effect in unlesioned animals. Monoamine oxidase activity was similar in unlesioned and lesioned animals treated with or without nicotine, suggesting that nicotine did not exert its effects through changes in MPTP or dopamine metabolism. MPTP-induced cell loss in the substantia nigra was unaffected by nicotine treatment, indicating that nicotine acts at the striatal level to restore/maintain dopaminergic function. These data further support the possibility that nicotine contributes to the lower incidence of Parkinson's disease in smokers.

Rainstorm weather systems and storm flood characteristics were studied to explore the relationship between the rainstorm weather system, the type of rainstorm, the cause of the flood and the time of occurrence, and some basic characteristics law of storm floods are summarized in the Second Songhua River Basin (Northeastern China). Then, the periodicity of catastrophic years was identified using the commensurability method and is shown to have an average of 11 years. Compared with simple flood forecasting, forecasting of flood-causing precipitation has a longer forecast period, which can gain the requisite time to discharge a reservoir and regain storage capacity, lower the limitation level, and manage the occurrence of flooding.

Microalgal oil was encapsulated in gelatin-gum Arabic complex coacervated matrices using transglutaminase (TG) as cross-linking agent. The effects of various cross-linking parameters including hardening time, temperature, pH and TG concentration on the oil release rate of the complex coacervation microcapsules (CCMs) were investigated, with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as release medium. The optimum parameters were as follows: hardening for 6 h at 15 °C and pH 6.0 with TG concentration of 15 U/g gelatin. The microcapsules obtained under optimum conditions had the lowest oil release rate. By analyzing the oil release curves, it was found that the oil release rate did not exactly fit the modified first-order kinetic model but exhibited early time and late time approximations for unsteady state diffusion. A greater initial release of oil was clearly observed whatever cross-linking parameters were, while the release profile became constant indicating some sustained release after the first hour.

In this report, we studied the optical properties of hybrid spherical structures consisting of alternating nanosheets of titania (TiO(2)) and graphene oxide (GO) prepared by a layer-by-layer self-assembly technique. Compared to samples with only TiO(2) spheres or GO nanosheets, a blue-to-red light emission band emerges and persists in this novel composite material even after it was further reduced through microwave irradiation. From detailed time-resolved measurements and energy-level structure modeling, this unexpected fluorescent feature was attributed to the indirect optical transitions between TiO(2) and the localized sp(2) domains of GO in a charge-separated configuration.
