Oceans are changing and these changes are affecting the animals that live there. Animals respond differently to changes in water temperature, food availability, and contaminants. Those responses can be seen in their genes. A technique called transcriptomics allows scientists to see the response of an animal’s genes to its environment. We used transcriptomics to compare two populations of Pacific razor clams in Alaska (United States): one that has lots of clams and one that used to have lots but does not anymore. We were surprised when we did not find any differences in their gene responses! So, we had to think about what else might be influencing the number of clams in these two populations. As we “dug” for answers, we found out that there are differences between the populations that do not influence their genes but may impact their numbers, such as being eaten by predators.

Increasing risk of pathogen spillover coupled with overall declines in wildlife population abundance in the Anthropocene make infectious disease a relevant concern for species conservation worldwide. While emerging molecular tools could improve our diagnostic capabilities and give insight into mechanisms underlying wildlife disease risk, they have rarely been applied in practice. Here, employing a previously reported gene transcription panel of common immune markers to track physiological changes, we present a detailed analysis over the course of both acute and chronic infection in one wildlife species where disease plays a critical role in conservation, bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis). Differential gene transcription patterns distinguished between infection statuses over the course of acute infection and differential correlation (DC) analyses identified clear changes in gene co-transcription patterns over the early stages of infection, with transcription of four genes—TGFb, AHR, IL1b and MX1—continuing to increase even as transcription of other immune-associated genes waned. In a separate analysis, we considered the capacity of the same gene transcription panel to aid in differentiating between chronically infected animals and animals in other disease states outside of acute disease events (an immediate priority for wildlife management in this system). We found that this transcription panel was capable of accurately identifying chronically infected animals in the test dataset, though additional data will be required to determine how far this ability extends. Taken together, our results showcase the successful proof of concept and breadth of potential utilities that gene transcription might provide to wildlife disease management, from direct insight into mechanisms associated with differential disease response to improved diagnostic capacity in the field.

Health diagnostics of wildlife have historically relied on the evaluation of select serum biomarkers and the identification of a contaminant or pathogen burden within specific tissues as an indicator of a level of insult. However, these approaches fail to measure the physiological reaction of the individual to stressors, thus limiting the scope of interpretation. Gene-based health diagnostics provide an opportunity for an alternate, whole-system, or holistic assessment of health, not only in individuals or populations but potentially in ecosystems. Seabirds are among the most threatened marine taxonomic groups in the world, with ~25% of this species currently listed as threatened or considered of special concern; among seabirds, the penguins (Family Spheniscidae) are the most threatened seabird Family. We used gene expression to develop baseline physiological indices for wild penguins in the Falkland-Malvinas Islands, and captive zoo penguins. We identified the almost complete statistical separation of penguin groups (gentoo Detroit Zoo, gentoo Falkland-Malvinas Islands, rockhopper Detroit Zoo, and rockhopper Falkland-Malvinas Islands) based on gene expression profiles. Implementation of long-term longitudinal studies would allow for the assessment of temporal increases or decreases of select transcripts and would facilitate interpretation of the drivers of change.

Climate change brings about novel types of public health emergencies. Unforeseen challenges put additional pressure on health systems and require innovative approaches to address emerging needs. The health of Indigenous Peoples is particularly impacted by the changing climate, because of their close connection to the land. For instance, the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being of coastal First Nations in British Columbia (BC), Canada, is interconnected with the abundance of healthy marine food sources that form the base of local traditional diets. The 2018 discovery of Vibrio cholerae illness in those who had eaten contaminated herring eggs not only had a clinical health impact but also created concerns for the safety of local food systems. The limited magnitude of the outbreak demonstrates the critical importance of collaborative partnerships between coastal First Nations communities in BC and health authorities working together in outbreak investigations. Yet, the lack of procedures that address cultural and institutional differences led to unnecessary discrepancies in the approach. This paper introduces the public health intervention used during the first ever Vibrio cholerae outbreak in coastal BC. The intervention has the potential to inform best practices when developing emergency response protocols potentially affecting Indigenous people and traditional foods. In this qualitative case study of the formal institutional documents and narratives of the key partners involved in the response, we assess the intervention, highlight the challenges and enablers, share lessons learned, and identify knowledge requirements to improve confidence in the traditional food system and support early warning systems.

PurposeDue to several factors that include a declining economy, high unemployment, home down‐sizing trends and the aging population, the weekend private home sales have permeated every residential neighborhood in the country. Countless households have garage sales, and many times they contain items of considerable value. Little is known about this vast phenomenon and its potential for criminal opportunity. Based on a survey of North Texas residents that held a garage sale, the authors aimed to extract some important findings on a topic that has had little attention.Design/methodology/approachDue to the exploratory nature of the study, descriptive statistics were utilized to provide insight into what takes place at garage sales. The areas of concentration in this research included the independent variables of the home garage sale environment and the dependent variables of theft and deviant behavior. Although several environmental factors were examined.FindingsFindings included thefts, inquiry to buy guns, small organized groups working to distract watchers, changing prices, and attempting intimidation with inappropriate remarks.Research limitations/implicationsThis research has several limitations that require explanation. First, the authors utilized a convenience sample by mailing to addresses from public newspapers. The study findings suggested that future research utilize a larger random sample of different areas over a longer period of time to increase generalizability.Practical implicationsThe researchers realize that each state and city may be different from the area studied and may not be applicable to everyone. Nevertheless, this study highlights the need for, as well as provides the basis for, additional interest in determining crime at garage and yard sales.Social implicationsThe study suggested offenders may be attracted into neighborhoods where, as strangers, they are not recognized as strangers therefore allowing them unrestricted access to communities.Originality/valueCrime and associated criminal activity and yard sales have been overlooked. Not until they seem to permeate every neighborhood has anyone related them to crime. Little is known about this vast phenomenon and its potential for criminal opportunity.

OBJECTIVES: Very few studies in Canada address the sexual health of young Aboriginal people who use drugs; the focus in established literature has been on parenteral risks. This study sought to identify the risk factors associated with inconsistent condom use in a cohort of young Aboriginal people who live in British Columbia and use drugs. METHODS: This analysis includes baseline questionnaire data from October 2003 to April 2005. Multivariable modeling stratified by gender identified independent demographic, traumatic, sex and drug use risk factors associated with inconsistent condom use. RESULTS: Of the 292 women and 313 men at baseline, prevalence of inconsistent condom use during insertive sex was 59% and 46%, respectively. In multivariable logistic regression, after adjusting for age and location, inconsistent condom use among women was significantly associated with ever being enrolled in a drug/alcohol treatment program (AOR: 1.95, 95% CI: 1.06-3.60), and ever being sexually abused (AOR: 1.80, 95% CI: 1.01-3.20). Among men, inconsistent condom use was significantly associated with having more than 20 lifetime sex partners (AOR: 2.06, 95% CI: 1.24-3.44). CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates high rates of inconsistent condom use among young Aboriginal people who use drugs, highlighting their vulnerability to contracting sexually transmitted infections. Culturally tailored sexual health interventions must be made a priority and need to incorporate the reality of gendered differences in the context of multigenerational trauma, including non-consensual sex.

Family physicians commonly use bupropion for treatment of tobacco abuse. Here we present a case of acute psychosis after treatment with bupropion. It represents the first case of bupropion-induced psychosis at a low dose in an otherwise healthy patient. Case A 28-year-old woman presented with a chief complaint of tobacco abuse and a desire to quit. Her medical history was remarkable for one previous anxiety attack, which was self-limited and required no medical intervention, and occasional gastrointestinal spasms treated with hyoscyamine. The patient’s surgical history was unremarkable; so was her family history, which was negative for psychiatric diagnoses. The patient’s social histories revealed a 3 pack per year smoking history, minimal alcohol use, and no elicit drug use. Given her desire to quit smoking, the patient was started on bupropion (Wellbutrin SR, GlaxoSmithKline, Brentford, United Kingdom) 100 mg daily for 1 week, with goal titration to 150 mg twice daily by the end of week 2. Risk and benefits were discussed and the patient was told to call with any concerns. Seven days into treatment the patient called stating she could not leave her home for fear that someone was going to hurt her and her children. In addition to the paranoia, the patient developed panic attacks, suicidal ideation, and auditory hallucinations suggesting she should hurt herself. Despite the abnormal psychiatric symptoms, orientation and memory were preserved. The patient refused to come to be evaluated and insisted that she would not hurt herself despite the new ideation, commenting that what she was experiencing was “silly” and “not real.” When buproprion was discontinued, all symptoms resolved over the course of 1 week. At a 2-month follow-up she displayed no residual symptoms.
