This research investigates the manufacturing and characterisation of polyester-based composites reinforced with jute fibres and red mud particulates. The motivation stems from the need for sustainable, high-performance materials for applications in industries, like aerospace and automotive, where resistance to erosion is critical. Jute, a renewable fibre, combined with red mud, an industrial byproduct, offers an eco-friendly alternative to conventional composites. The composites were fabricated using compression moulding with varying red mud contents (10, 20, and 30 wt.%) and a fixed 40 wt.% of jute fibre. Fibre treatments included sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and silane treatments to improve bonding and performance. Erosion tests were performed using an air-jet erosion tester, examining the effects of the red mud content, fibre treatment, and impact angles. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis provided insights into the erosion mechanisms. A distinctive reduction in erosion rates at higher impact angles (30°–60°) was observed, attributed to the semi-ductile nature of the composites. The addition of red mud enhanced erosion resistance, although an excess of 30 wt.% reduced resistance due to poor surface bonding. Silane-treated composites showed the lowest erosion rates. This study provides new insights into the interplay among material composition, fibre treatment, and erosion dynamics, contributing to the development of optimised, eco-friendly composite materials. The increasing application of additively manufactured (AM) materials in engineering and biomedical fields highlights the necessity of understanding their mechanical behavior, particularly with complex lattice structures. Polylactic acid (PLA), a popular biopolymer in additive manufacturing, exhibits mechanical characteristics highly dependent on its structural design. This research investigates the quasi‐static puncture failure analysis and mechanical characteristics of additively manufactured (AM) polylactic acid (PLA) materials with various lattice structures. The mechanical behavior, including tensile strength, flexural properties, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), Izod impact resistance, and quasi‐static punch shear strength (QS‐PSS), was investigated following the respective ASTM protocols. Results indicate a 6% increase in tensile strength, to ca. 28 MPa, for the triangular PLA lattice structure compared with plain lattice structures. In the flexural test, the hexagonal structure showed a 13% increase in bending strength, to ca. 45 MPa, compared with the plain structure. Additionally, the hexagonal PLA lattice structure exhibited a 24% increase in shear strength, to approximately 8 MPa, over the plain lattice structure in the interlaminar shear strength analysis. In the Izod impact analysis, the plain lattice structure demonstrated a 17% increase in impact strength, to ca. 278 J/m, compared with the circular structure. A stainless‐steel hemispherical indenter was employed to investigate the quasi‐static punch shear behavior (QS‐PSS) of different lattice structures. The triangular structure displayed increased total energy absorption capacity and specific energy absorption of ca. 19 J and 0.529 J/g, respectively, compared with other lattice structures. These results are important for the creation of additively manufactured PLA lattice structures, improving the puncture resistance of advanced composites. The aviation sector is continually seeking ways to reduce the weight of aircraft structures without compromising their mechanical integrity. Lightweight materials, such as advanced epoxy sandwich composites with hybrid nanostructures, have the potential to significantly contribute to fuel efficiency, thereby addressing environmental concerns and operational costs. This research investigates the mechanical properties of hybrid sandwich polymer composites filled with silica nanoparticles (SNiPs). Epoxy isocyanate (PU) foam sandwich composites were fabricated with kevlar fiber, carbon fiber, and glass fiber, constructed by alternating inclined interply bidirectional fiber and foam layers. SNiPs were introduced into the composite system at varying percentages, such as 0, 2, 4, and 6 wt%. The study employs a systematic approach, incorporating experimental testing, to assess key mechanical parameters, including tensile strength, flexural strength, and shear strength. The test results indicate that the incorporation of SNiPs improved the mechanical properties of the composites, leading to enhanced strength, toughness, and modulus of elasticity. Incorporation of composite laminates with 4 wt% SiNPs resulted in improved three‐point bending, tensile, shear, and torsional strengths, with maximum values of ca. 64, ca. 5, ca. 2 MPa, and ca. 22 Nm, respectively. The findings contribute to the ongoing pursuit of materials that can meet the stringent demands of modern aviation, ultimately paving the way for advancements in aircraft construction and design. The primary objective of this research is to investigate the impact of strain rate on the mechanical properties of polylactic acid (PLA) fabricated through fused deposition modeling. PLA material was fabricated in a grid pattern with 75% infill density, a 0.16 mm layer height, and a ± 45° printing direction. This study specifically investigated tensile strength, flexural strength, and interlaminar strength with respect to varying crosshead speeds (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 mm/min). The highest tensile strength noted was 40.13 MPa at a cross—head speed of 5 mm/min. Maximum elongation of 7.1% was noted on cross head velocity of 1 mm/min, and the maximum interlaminar strength reached 76.04 MPa at 4 mm/min. At a crosshead speed of 4 mm/min, the tensile strength measured was 38.36 MPa, which is a value close to the maximum result achieved in the tensile test. Interlaminar strength was notably higher at a crosshead speed of 4 mm/min, indicating a strong integrity of the printed layers. The values for elongation percentage and flexural strength were also moderate at a crosshead speed of 4 mm/min, which was 4.9% and 55 MPa, respectively. Therefore, crosshead speed of 4 mm/min appears to be an optimum factor for testing 3D printed PLA parts. The use of industrial waste red mud in polymer composites promotes environmental sustainability by mitigating the environmental impacts associated with landfill disposal. Previous research by the authors on red mud sisal fiber composites resulted in increased strength; it is expected that the strength can be increased further through fiber treatment. As a result, the current study sought to examine the effects of chemical‐treated sisal fiber reinforcement on the mechanical properties of red mud composites. Alkaline treatment and silane treatment were both used as chemical treatment methods. Red mud was added in three different weight percentages, and composites were built using the compression molding method and tested for hardness, tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact strength. The findings indicate that the strength of the composite increases with the incorporation of treated fibers, silane‐treated 30% red mud composites showed a maximum hardness of around 92 shore D. The tensile strength of the composites containing 20% red mud and treated with silane was the highest, reaching ca. 63 MPa. This significant increase in strength was attributed to the formation of strong interfacial bonding between the red mud, fiber, and matrix. Furthermore, the silane‐treated 20 wt% red mud composites have the highest flexural strength (ca. 244 MPa) and impact strength (ca. 26 J/m). However, increasing the red mud content above 20 wt% resulted in decreased tensile, flexural, and impact strength due to poor bond development, and red mud agglomeration. The findings of this study are beneficial for the design and development of composites based on red mud, as well as for promoting sustainable waste management practices.
