Abstract

A method for the amperometric determination of Myo-inositol is presented. Nanostructured copper sulfide material was synthesized by solvothermal method and utilized as sensor matrix. The physico-chemical analysis using XRD, Raman, FE-SEM, TEM, and XPS confirmed the formation of CuS material. The voltammetric response of CuS-modified glassy carbon electrode for a successive Myo-inositol (0.5 μM) addition confirmed that the reaction takes place at the surface of the electrode. The modified electrode resulted in signal enhancement for a linear response ranging from 0.5–8.5 μM at an applied overpotential of 0.65 V with a correlation coefficient value (R2) of 0.99. The sensitivity and limit of detection of the modified electrode were 7.87 μA μM−1 cm−2 and 0.24 μM, respectively. The interfering effect of various compounds present in real samples was examined.

Abstract

The genus Ocimum has a number of species that are used to treat different types of disorders and diseases from ancient times. In this genus, O. basilicum plays a vital role due to its various medicinal properties. It is universally cultivated as herbaceous, perennial plant but originated from Asian continent. O. basilicum is used as a culinary herb and also has a number of pharmacological activities to prevent or treat cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, menstrual cramps, digestive disorders, neuro-degenerated disorders and cancer. In addition to that, it has been reported for antioxidant, antimicrobial, and larvicidal activities. Chemical constituents such as linalool; eugenol; 1, 8-cineone; methyl eugenol and anthocyanins are mostly responsible for the above mentioned activities. Some traditional uses of this plant coincidences with experimental results. However, the studies conducted based on its traditional use are negligible. This review is an attempt to provide a pharmaceutical perspective of Ocimum basilicum.

Abstract

Inhibition of monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) activity by deprenyl hydrochloride (drug) and methanolic extract ofPseudarthria viscida(L.) have been studied using atomic force microscopy force–distance (AFM F–D) curves. Attractive force measured between MAO-B and kynuramine dihydrobromide (substrate) was 56.12 pN ± 8.9, between MAO-B (inhibited by drug) and substrate was 11.25 pN ± 2.6 and MAO-B (inhibited by plant extract) and substrate was 18.61 pN ± 2.9. Phytochemical analysis revealed catechin as one of the compounds inP. viscida (L.) extract and MAO-B–catechin binding sites were confirmed usingin silicomethods. This study is perhaps the first report of combining three techniques, namely AFM F–D curves, phytochemical andin silicoanalysis to measure enzyme–substrate attractive force, constituents of plant extract and position of binding sites, respectively. Abstract

Electrochemical biosensors have become very important tools in analytical chemistry because of their advantages like accuracy, high sensitivity and easy handling. This article describes electrochemical detection of acetic acid based on the fungus Fusarium solani. The biosensor employed for the study of assimilation of substrates was fabricated by coupling the immobilized membrane with the DO probe using dialysis tubing. A microbial dispersion containing 0.2 g of wet weight of the organisms per mL was used for immobilization upon cellulose nitrate membrane. The membrane retaining the fungus was placed on the Teflon membrane of the oxygen electrode so that the fungus was trapped between the two membranes. The linear range was found to be between 2 and 70 ppm (v/v) of acetic acid. A polypropylene net increases the lifetime of the sensor due to its retention of humidity in the net. By dipping the electrochemical probe onto buffer (pH 7.2), the sensor was found to have an extended lifetime of 120 days with about 800 determinations.
