We investigated the frequency bandwidth, autocorrelation function, and complexity of chaotic temporal waveforms in unidirectionally coupled semiconductor lasers with time-delayed optical feedback. The effective bandwidth, peak value of autocorrelation function, and maximum Lyapunov exponent were simultaneously optimized by searching several control parameters of the laser systems based on multiobjective genetic algorithms. We found a conflicting relation between the effective bandwidth enhancement and the time-delay signature suppression, and a detailed relationship between the maximum Lyapunov exponent and the peak value of autocorrelation function.

With the purpose of designing the extreme ultraviolet polarizer with many objectives, a combined application of multi-objective genetic algorithms is theoretically proposed. Owing to the multi-objective genetic algorithm, the relationships between different designing objectives of extreme ultraviolet polarizer have been obtained by analyzing the distribution of nondominated solutions in the four-dimensional objective space, and the optimized multilayer design can be obtained by guiding the searching in the desired region based on the multi-objective genetic algorithm with reference direction. Compared with the conventional method of multilayer design, our method has a higher probability of achieving the optimal multilayer design. Our work should be the first research in optimizing the optical multilayer designs in the high-dimensional objective space, and our results demonstrate a potential application of our method in the designs of optical thin films.

Considering the random fluctuations of the layer thickness, a method of robust design of broadband EUV multilayers based on multi-objective evolutionary algorithm is presented. Owing to the optimization of multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, the optical performance and robust quality of broadband Mo/Si multilayer can be optimized simultaneously, and then a set of robust designs of aperiodic EUV multilayers, which are insensitive to the thickness errors can be obtained in one single simulation run. The robust designs of broadband Mo/Si multilayers could be used to reduce the production risks of EUV mirrors, and this research demonstrates a great potential of application of multi-objective evolutionary algorithm on the design of optical thin film.

In an N-type atomic system with double electromagnetically induced transparency, when the traveling-wave coupling field is replaced by a standing-wave, double fully developed photonic band gaps open up due to space-modulated refractive index within the two electromagnetically induced transparency widows. The dynamically induced band gaps can be tuned coherently, and have applications in manipulating the propagation dynamics of light pulses.

The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and its dispersion properties in a four-level inverted-Y atomic system are investigated. The absorption spectrum of a weak probe field shows two EIT windows (dark resonances) whose location, width, and depth can be controlled by manipulating the parameters of the coupling fields; the corresponding dispersion properties are also measured by using a Mach–Zehnder interferometer. The experimental measurements agree well with the theoretical calculations. This kind of system can find important applications in two-channel quantum communication and information storage.

In order to refine the layered structure of extreme ultraviolet multilayers, a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm which is post-hybridized with the standard Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is applied to analyze the grazing incidence X-ray reflectivity (GIXR) and the normal incidence extreme ultraviolet reflectance (EUVR). In this procedure, the GIXR data and EUVR data are simultaneously fitted as two objectives, and the high sensitivities of these two sets of data to layer thicknesses and densities are combined. This set of mathematical procedures is conducive to obtain a more correct model of periodic multilayers which can simultaneously describe both GIXR and EUVR measurements. As a result, the layered structure of Mo/Si multilayers with a period of about 7.0 nm is obtained.

We analyze the optical response of a standing-wave driven four-level atomic system with double dark resonances. Fully developed double photonic band gaps arise as a result of periodically modulated refractive index within the two electromagnetically induced transparency widows. We anticipate that the dynamically induced band gaps can be used to coherently control the propagation of light-pulses with different center frequencies and may have applications in all-optical switching and routing for quantum information networks.

We show theoretically that the propagation of light can be slowed down considerably using the method of coherent hole-burning in a Doppler broadened three-level lambda-type atomic medium without the Doppler-free configurations. The reduction of group velocity of light pulse is achieved by the application of a saturating beam and a strong coupling beam which produce a narrow spectral hole-burning at resonance. We can obtain a larger group index than that using the method of saturation absorption spectroscopy in Doppler-broadened two-level atomic systems.

We show that the simultaneous application of a copropagating saturating pump and a counterpropagating coherent beam can be used to burn a narrow spectral hole within the absorption line of the optical transition in a Doppler-broadened medium. The large index of refraction of this hole slows down a light pulse by a factor of about 104. In addition, we propose a method to create two-color slow light pulses with simultaneous gain by employing a bichromatic field to saturate the medium.

A blazed gain grating in a four-level atomic system is theoretically demonstrated. This grating is based on the spatial modulation of Raman gain, which is created by an intensity mask in the signal field. Due to the modulo-2 pi phase modulation, the majority of energy in the amplified probe beam can be deflected into the first-order direction, and a diffraction efficiency higher than 100% is predicted. When an intensity mask having two symmetric domains is adopted, this proposal can give a further possibility of all-optical beam splitting. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Double photonic bandgaps (PBGs) can simultaneously appear when double dark resonances in uniform cold atoms are spatially modulated by a resonance standing-wave. Theoretical calculations show that variable and efficient coherent optical control of the PBGs can be achieved by modulating the coupling field and standing-wave. The structures of double PBGs induced by the atomic coherence effect are better than those obtained in the photonic crystal heterostructures. We anticipate that this scheme has potential applications in optical networks for dual-channel all-optical switching or a dual-frequency optical Bragg reflector.

We theoretically investigate the influence of a coherent pump field on the propagation of a weak light pulse of a probe field in a four-level atomic system. Due to the modulation of the pump field, the light pulse can be manipulated from subluminal to superluminal with negligible distortion. This scheme can be realized in both the ultracold and Doppler-broadened atomic systems. We also demonstrate that the spectral linewidth with an anomalous dispersion is reduced by thermal averaging; therefore, one can obtain a larger negative group refractive index in room-temperature vapor than the largest value achieved in ultracold atomic gas.

We theoretically study the transmission and reflection of the probe travelling wave in an electromagnetically induced absorption grating (EIG), which is created in a three-level Lambda-type atomic system when the coupling field is a standing wave. Using the system, we show that a photonic stop band can exist on one side away from the resonance point in ultracold atomic gas, while there is an enhanced absorption at resonance and small reflection around it in the thermal atomic gas. Because our method can deal with such two cases, it is helpful to further understand the effects of the Doppler effect on atomic coherence and interference.
