Cracks in solid-state materials are typically irreversible. Here we report electrically reversible opening and closing of nanoscale cracks in an intermetallic thin film grown on a ferroelectric substrate driven by a small electric field (~0.83 kV/cm). Accordingly, a nonvolatile colossal electroresistance on-off ratio of more than 108 is measured across the cracks in the intermetallic film at room temperature. Cracks are easily formed with low-frequency voltage cycling and remain stable when the device is operated at high frequency, which offers intriguing potential for next-generation high-frequency memory applications. Moreover, endurance testing demonstrates that the opening and closing of such cracks can reach over 107 cycles under 10-μs pulses, without catastrophic failure of the film.

Introduction: Aeromonas spp. are ubiquitous inhabitants of ecosystems, and many species are opportunistically pathogenic to humans and animals. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Aeromonas species have been widely detected in hospitals, urban rivers, livestock, and aquatic animals., Results: In this study, we identified two Aeromonas isolates, namely Aeromonas veronii 0728Q8Av and Aeromonas caviae 1029Y16Ac, from coastal waters in Zhejiang, China. Both isolates exhibited typical biochemical characteristics and conferred MDR to 11 kinds of antibiotics, remaining susceptible to ceftazidime. Whole-genome sequencing revealed that both isolates harbored multiple antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and several mobile genetic elements (MGEs) on the chromosomes, each containing a resistance genomic island (GI), a typical class 1 integron, a transposon, and various insertion sequences (ISs). Most ARGs were situated within the multiple resistance GI, which contained a class 1 integron and a transposon in both Aeromonas isolates. Furthermore, a chromosomal mcr-3.16 gene was identified in A. veronii 0728Q8Av, while a chromosomal mcr-3.3 was found in A. caviae 1029Y16Ac. Both mcr-3 variants were not located within but were distanced from the multidrug resistance GI on the chromosome, flanking by multiple ISs. In addition, a mcr-3-like was found adjacent to mcr-3.16 to form a tandem mcr-3.16 - mcr-3-like - dgkA structure; yet, Escherichia coli carrying the recombinants of mcr-3-like did not exhibit resistance to colistin. And an incomplete mcr-3-like was found adjacent to mcr-3.3 in A. caviae 1029Y16Ac, suggesting the possibility that mcr-3 variants originated from Aeromonas species. In vivo bacterial pathogenicity test indicated that A. veronii 0728Q8Av exhibited moderate pathogenicity towards infected ayu, while A. caviae 1029Y16Ac was non-virulent., Discussion: Thus, both Aeromonas species deserve further attention regarding their antimicrobial resistance and pathogenicity., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest. KTaO 3 heterostructures have recently attracted attention as model systems to study the interplay of quantum paraelectricity, spin-orbit coupling, and superconductivity. However, the high and low vapor pressures of potassium and tantalum present processing challenges to creating heterostructure interfaces clean enough to reveal the intrinsic quantum properties. Here, we report superconducting heterostructures based on high-quality epitaxial (111) KTaO 3 thin films using an adsorption-controlled hybrid PLD to overcome the vapor pressure mismatch. Electrical and structural characterizations reveal that the higher-quality heterostructure interface between amorphous LaAlO 3 and KTaO 3 thin films supports a two-dimensional electron gas with substantially higher electron mobility, superconducting transition temperature, and critical current density than that in bulk single-crystal KTaO 3 -based heterostructures. Our hybrid approach may enable epitaxial growth of other alkali metal-based oxides that lie beyond the capabilities of conventional methods.

Vanadium diselenide (VSe 2 ) exhibits versatile electronic and magnetic properties in the trigonal prismatic (H-) and octahedral (T-) phases. Compared to the metallic T-phase, the H-phase with a tunable semiconductor property is predicted to be a ferrovalley material with spontaneous valley polarization. Herein we report an epitaxial growth of the monolayer 2D VSe 2 on a mica substrate via the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method by introducing salt in the precursor. Our first-principles calculations suggest that the monolayer H-phase VSe 2 with a large lateral size is thermodynamically favorable. The honeycomb-like structure and the broken symmetry are directly observed by spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and confirmed by giant second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity. The p -type transport behavior is further evidenced by the temperature-dependent resistance and field-effect device study. The present work introduces a new phase-stable 2D transition metal dichalcogenide, opening the prospect of novel electronic and spintronics device design.

The all-solid-state battery (ASSB) is a promising next-generation energy storage technology for both consumer electronics and electric vehicles because of its high energy density and improved safety. Sulfide solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) have merits of low density, high ionic conductivity, and favorable mechanical properties compared to oxide ceramic and polymer materials. However, mass production and processing of sulfide SSEs remain a grand challenge because of their poor moisture stability. Here, we report a reversible surface coating strategy for enhancing the moisture stability of sulfide SSEs using amphipathic organic molecules. An ultrathin layer of 1-bromopentane is coated on the sulfide SSE surface (e.g., Li 7 P 2 S 8 Br 0.5 I 0.5 ) via Van der Waals force. 1-Bromopentane has more negative adsorption energy with SSEs than H 2 O based on first-principles calculations, thereby enhancing the moisture stability of SSEs because the hydrophobic long-chain alkyl tail of 1-bromopentane repels water molecules. Moreover, this amphipathic molecular layer has a negligible effect on ionic conductivity and can be removed reversibly by heating at low temperatures (e.g., 160 °C). This finding opens a new pathway for the surface engineering of moisture-sensitive SSEs and other energy materials, thereby speeding up their deployment in ASSBs.

Intermetallic compounds offer unique opportunities for atom-by-atom manipulation of catalytic ensembles through precise stoichiometric control. The (Pd, M, Zn) γ-brass phase enables the controlled synthesis of Pd-M-Pd catalytic sites (M = Zn, Pd, Cu, Ag and Au) isolated in an inert Zn matrix. These multi-atom heteronuclear active sites are catalytically distinct from Pd single atoms and fully coordinated Pd. Here we quantify the unexpectedly large effect that active-site composition (that is, identity of the M atom in Pd-M-Pd sites) has on ethylene selectivity during acetylene semihydrogenation. Subtle stoichiometric control demonstrates that Pd-Pd-Pd sites are active for ethylene hydrogenation, whereas Pd-Zn-Pd sites show no measurable ethylene-to-ethane conversion. Agreement between experimental and density-functional-theory-predicted activities and selectivities demonstrates precise control of Pd-M-Pd active-site composition. Forming metallurgical phases has a critical impact on the performance of dissimilar materials joints. Here, we shed light on the forming mechanism of equilibrium and non-equilibrium intermetallic compounds (IMCs) in dissimilar aluminum/steel joints with respect to processing history (e.g., the pressure and temperature profiles) and chemical composition, where the knowledge of free energy and atomic diffusion in the Al-Fe system was taken from first-principles phonon calculations and data available in the literature. We found that the metastable and ductile (judged by the presently predicted elastic constants) Al 6 Fe is a pressure (P) favored IMC observed in processes involving high pressures. The MoSi 2 -type Al 2 Fe is brittle and a strong P-favored IMC observed at high pressures. The stable, brittle η-Al 5 Fe 2 is the most observed IMC (followed by θ-Al 13 Fe 4 ) in almost all processes, such as fusion/solid-state welding and additive manufacturing (AM), since η-Al 5 Fe 2 is temperature-favored, possessing high thermodynamic driving force of formation and the fastest atomic diffusivity among all Al-Fe IMCs. Notably, the ductile AlFe 3 , the less ductile AlFe, and most of the other IMCs can be formed during AM, making AM a superior process to achieve desired IMCs in dissimilar materials. In addition, the unknown configurations of Al 2 Fe and Al 5 Fe 2 were also examined by machine learning based datamining together with first-principles verifications and structure predictions. Advances in machine learning (ML), especially in the cooperation between ML predictions, density functional theory (DFT) based first-principles calculations, and experimental verification are emerging as a key part of a new paradigm to understand fundamentals, verify, analyze, and predict data, and design and discover materials. Taking stacking fault energy ( γ SFE ) as an example, we perform a correlation analysis of γ SFE in dilute Al-, Ni-, and Pt-based alloys by descriptors and ML algorithms. These γ SFE values were predicted by DFT-based alias shear deformation approach, and up to 49 elemental descriptors and 21 regression algorithms were examined. The present work indicates that (i) the variation of γ SFE affected by alloying elements can be quantified through 14 elemental attributes based on their statistical significances to decrease the mean absolute error (MAE) in ML predictions, and in particular, the number of p valence electrons, a descriptor second only to the covalent radius in importance to model performance, is unexpected; (ii) the alloys with elements close to Ni and Co in the periodic table possess higher γ SFE values; (iii) the top four outliers of DFT predictions of γ SFE are for the alloys of Al 23 La, Pt 23 Au, Ni 23 Co, and Al 23 Be based on the analyses of statistical differences between DFT and ML predictions; and (iv) the best ML model to predict γ SFE is produced by Gaussian process regression with an average MAE < 8 mJ m -2 . Beyond detailed analysis of the Al-, Ni-, and Pt-based alloys, we also predict the γ SFE values using the present ML models in other fcc-based dilute alloys (i.e., Cu, Ag, Au, Rh, Pd, and Ir) with the expected MAE < 17 mJ m -2 and observe similar effects of alloying elements on γ SFE as those in Pt 23 X or Ni 23 X., (© 2021 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

Topological materials are derived from the interplay between symmetry and topology. Advances in topological band theories have led to the prediction that the antiperovskite oxide Sr 3 SnO is a topological crystalline insulator, a new electronic phase of matter where the conductivity in its (001) crystallographic planes is protected by crystallographic point group symmetries. Realization of this material, however, is challenging. Guided by thermodynamic calculations, a deposition approach is designed and implemented to achieve the adsorption-controlled growth of epitaxial Sr 3 SnO single-crystal films by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE). In situ transport and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements reveal the metallic and electronic structure of the as-grown samples. Compared with conventional MBE, the used synthesis route results in superior sample quality and is readily adapted to other topological systems with antiperovskite structures. Aims: This study investigated the safety and efficacy of remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) on ameliorating the sequelae of ischemic moyamoya disease (iMMD)., Methods: A total of 30 iMMD patients underwent long-term RIC and were followed up at 0.5, 1, and 2 years for clinical outcomes, including frequency of stroke recurrence, Patient Global Impression of Change (PGIC) scale, peak systolic velocities (PSV), and cerebral perfusion., Results: During the whole RIC treatment process, no RIC-related adverse event occurred. Only one of 30 patients suffered a onetime infarction (3.3%), and the ratios of acceptable PGIC were 88.2%, 64.3%, and 92.3% at 0.5, 1, and 2 years follow-up. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed the frequency of stroke recurrence was significantly reduced after RIC (P = .013). The frequency of TIA per week was 1.1 (0.6, 2.8) prior to RIC and 0.1 (0.0, 0.5) post-RIC (P < .01). Compared to baseline, PSV values were significantly reduced after RIC treatment (P = .002 at 0.5, P = .331 at 1, and P = .006 at 2 years). In patients undergoing perfusion studies, 75% obtained improvement on followed-up SPECT and 95% on followed-up PET maps., Conclusions: Remote ischemic conditioning may be beneficial on controlling iMMD-induced ischemic events, relieving symptoms, and improving cerebral perfusion, without incidence of complications in this case series., (© 2019 The Authors. The development of future generations of Ni-base superalloys will depend on a systematic understanding of how each alloying element affects the fundamental properties of Ni-base superalloys, particularly with respect to their creep behavior. First, this article presents the temperature-dependent data of all factors entering into dilute impurity diffusion for 26 Ni-X alloy systems, including atomic jump frequencies, thermodynamic parameters, and diffusivity plots. Second, this article presents the data used to calculate the relative creep rate ratios showing the effect of each of the 26 alloying elements, X, on the dilute Ni-X alloy. The dataset refers to "A comprehensive first-principles study of solute elements in dilute Ni alloys: Diffusion coefficients and their implications to tailor creep rate" by Hargather et al. [1].

Background: Idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) is one of the most common adult nephrotic syndromes. Some patients with this disorder require immunosuppressive therapy. This retrospective case series was performed to assess the effects of tacrolimus (TAC) combined with Tripterygium wilfordii polyglycoside (TWG) in treating IMN., Methods: From January 2015 to August 2016, kidney-biopsy-proven IMN patients treated with TAC in the Chinese PLA General Hospital were screened. Data were retrieved from the patients' medical records. The first efficacy evaluation index was remission rate (complete remission and partial remission), and the secondary efficacy evaluation indices included relapse rate, proteinuria, serum albumin and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Adverse events were also assessed., Results: The included patients' treatments were tacrolimus monotherapy (TAC group, n = 33), tacrolimus combined with methylprednisolone (MP) (TAC + MP group, n = 24) and tacrolimus combined with Tripterygium wilfordii polyglycoside (TAC + TWG group, n = 21). The remission rates of the TAC, TAC + MP, and TAC + TWG groups in the 10th month were 54.5, 62.5, and 85.7%, respectively (TAC + TWG group vs TAC group, P = 0.037, TAC + TWG group vs TAC + MP group, P = 0.125). Moreover, the complete remission rates of the TAC, TAC + MP, and TAC + TWG groups in the 10th month were 21.2, 20.8, and 57.1%, respectively (TAC + TWG group vs TAC group, P = 0.007, TAC + TWG group vs TAC + MP group, P = 0.012). Compared with the TAC group, the TAC + TWG group had a higher remission rate during these ten months (log-rank, P = 0.005). Compared with the TAC and TAC + MP groups, the TAC + TWG group had a higher complete remission rate (log-rank, P = 0.019 and log-rank, P = 0.005, respectively)., Conclusion: This retrospective study showed that TAC combined with TWG may be effective for treating IMN. Further randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are needed to assess the efficacy and safety of TAC combined with TWG.

Chronic cerebral circulation insufficiency (CCCI) may not be an independent disease; rather, it is a pervasive state of long-term cerebral blood flow insufficiency caused by a variety of etiologies, and considered to be associated with either occurrence or recurrence of ischemic stroke, vascular cognitive impairment, and development of vascular dementia, resulting in disability and mortality worldwide. This review summarizes the features and recent progress of CCCI, mainly focusing on epidemiology, experimental research, pathophysiology, etiology, clinical manifestations, imaging presentation, diagnosis, and potential therapeutic regimens. Sodium ion (Na) solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) are critical to address notorious safety issues associated with liquid electrolytes used in the current Na ion batteries. Fulfilling multiple innovations is a grand challenge but is imperative for advanced Na ion SSEs, such as a combination of high ionic conductivity and excellent chemical stability. Here, our first-principles and phonon calculations reveal that Na 3 P 1-x As x S 4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) is a solid-state superionic conductor stabilized at 0 K by zero-point vibrational energy and at finite temperatures by vibrational and configurational entropies. Especially, our integrated first-principles and experimental approach indicates that Na 3 P 1-x As x S 4 is dry-air stable. Additionally, the alloying element arsenic greatly enhances the moisture (i.e., H 2 O) stability of Na 3 P 1-x As x S 4 by shifting the reaction products from the easy-forming oxysulfides (such as Na 3 POS 3 and Na 3 PO 2 S 2 with H 2 S release) to the difficult-forming hydrates (such as Na 3 P 1-x As x S 4 ·nH 2 O with n = 8 and/or 9) due mainly to a weaker As-O affinity compared to that of P-O. The present work demonstrates that alloying is able to achieve multiple innovations for solid-state electrolytes, such as a desirable superionic conductor with not only a high ionic conductivity (for example, 1.46 mS/cm at room temperature achieved in Na 3 P 0.62 As 0.38 S 4 ) but also an excellent chemical stability with respect to temperature, composition, and moisture.

Thermal expansion is an important property of substances. Its theoretical prediction has been challenging, particularly in cases the volume decreases with temperature, i.e., thermal contraction or negative thermal expansion at high temperatures. In this paper, a new theory recently developed by the authors has been reviewed and further examined in the framework of fundamental thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. Its applications to cerium with colossal thermal expansion and Fe₃Pt with thermal contraction in certain temperature ranges are discussed. It is anticipated that this theory is not limited to volume only and can be used to predict a wide range of properties at finite temperatures.

A Na-ion solid-state electrolyte, Na 3 P 0.62 As 0.38 S 4 , is developed with an exceptionally high conductivity of 1.46 mS cm -1 at 25 °C and enhanced moisture stability. Dual effects of alloying element As (lattice expansion and a weaker AsS bond strength) are responsible for the superior conductivity. The proton mean kinetic energy, Ke(H), of water confined in nanocavities of beryl (Be 3 Al 2 Si 6 O 18 ) at 5 K was obtained by simulating the partial vibrational density of states from density functional theory based first-principles calculations. The result, Ke(H) = 104.4 meV, is in remarkable agreement with the 5 K deep inelastic neutron scattering (DINS) measured value of 105 meV. This is in fact the first successful calculation that reproduces an anomalous DINS value regarding Ke(H) in nano-confined water. The calculation indicates that the vibrational states of the proton of the nano-confined water molecule distribute much differently than in ordinary H 2 O phases, most probably due to coupling with lattice modes of the hosting beryl nano-cage. These findings may be viewed as a promising step towards the resolution of the DINS controversial measurements on other H 2 O nano-confining systems, e.g., H 2 O confined in single and double walled carbon nanotubes.

A 3-tier histopathologic scoring system, the chemotherapy response score (CRS), was previously devised for reporting the histologic response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in interval debulking surgery specimens of stage IIIc/IV tuboovarian high-grade serous carcinoma. This has been shown to predict the outcome and offer additional information to other methods of assessing the treatment response. In the present study, the reproducibility of this scoring system was assessed by determining the interobserver agreement among reporting pathologists. A total of 5 groups each comprising 3 pathologists with different levels of expertise were selected. The participants underwent an online tutorial on how to apply the CRS system. 40 cases (38 cases in 2 appraiser groups) were scored individually by each of the 15 pathologists. The interobserver reproducibility was calculated using Fleiss' κ, Kendall's coefficient of concordance, and the absolute agreement between (a) individual pathologists within 1 group, (b) with the majority score agreement between all groups, and (c) with all individual scores. The CRS system was found to be highly reproducible among all the pathologists' groups (κ=0.761). The agreement in identifying the group of patients with the best response to chemotherapy was exceptionally high (κ=0.926). We conclude that CRS has a high interobserver reproducibility, especially in identifying the subgroup of patients with the best chemotherapy response, justifying its inclusion in clinical trials and reporting practice.

Unprecedented interest has been spurred recently in two-dimensional (2D) layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) that possess tunable electronic and optical properties. However, synthesis of a wafer-scale TMD thin film with controlled layers and homogeneity remains highly challenging due mainly to the lack of thermodynamic and diffusion knowledge, which can be used to understand and design process conditions, but falls far behind the rapidly growing TMD field. Here, an integrated density functional theory (DFT) and calculation of phase diagram (CALPHAD) modeling approach is employed to provide thermodynamic insight into lateral versus vertical growth of the prototypical 2D material MoS2. Various DFT energies are predicted from the layer-dependent MoS2, 2D flake-size related mono- and bilayer MoS2, to Mo and S migrations with and without graphene and sapphire substrates, thus shedding light on the factors that control lateral versus vertical growth of 2D islands. For example, the monolayer MoS2 flake in a small 2D lateral size is thermodynamically favorable with respect to the bilayer counterpart, indicating the monolayer preference during the initial stage of nucleation; while the bilayer MoS2 flake becomes stable with increasing 2D lateral size. The critical 2D flake-size of phase stability between mono- and bilayer MoS2 is adjustable via the choice of substrate. In terms of DFT energies and CALPHAD modeling, the size dependent pressure-temperature-composition (P-T-x) growth windows are predicted for MoS2, indicating that the formation of MoS2 flake with reduced size appears in the middle but close to the lower T and higher P "Gas + MoS2" phase region. It further suggests that Mo diffusion is a controlling factor for MoS2 growth owing to its extremely low diffusivity compared to that of sulfur. Calculated MoS2 energies, Mo and S diffusivities, and size-dependent P-T-x growth windows are in good accord with available experiments, and the present data provide quantitative insight into the controlled growth of 2D layered MoS2.

Using first-principles calculations accompanied by the transition state theory and an 8-frequency model, we present a comprehensive investigation of the diffusion coefficients of substitutional alloying elements X in dilute α-Ti alloys, where X denotes Al, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, Zr, and Sn. The alloying elements Mo and Al exhibit a maximum and a minimum diffusion rate in dilute α-Ti alloys, respectively. It is found that the nearest-neighbor solute-vacancy binding energies and activation energies are roughly inversely proportional to the volume changes induced by solute atoms. There are two exceptions to this trend: Al and Mo. Besides the physical effect (i.e., solute size), two other key factors governing solute diffusion in dilute α-Ti are clarified: the chemical bonding characteristics and vibrational features of X-Ti pairs. It verifies that the ultrafast diffusivity of Mo arises from the interactions with Ti atoms by metallic bonds and its low-frequency contributions to lattice vibration, while the more covalent bonding nature and the high-frequency contributions to the lattice vibration of Al lead to its ultraslow diffusivity. In addition, the correlation effects of diffusion coefficients are non-negligible for the large solutes Ta, Nb, and Zr, in which the direct solute-vacancy migration barriers are much smaller than the solvent-vacancy migration barriers.

Objective: To design Keap1-tat peptide and explore its neuroprotective role on hipocampal CA1 neuron, as well as the effect on spacial learning and memory function following global cerebral ischemia., Methods: Adult male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were subjected to global cerebral ischemia (GCI) by four-vessel occlusion for 15 min and randomly divided into five groups: sham, sham+Keap1-tat, ischemia/reperfusion (I/R), Keap1-tat peptide- and vehicle-administrated groups. For Keap1-tat or vehicle groups, the rats were treated with Keap1-tat (30, 50, 100 μg in 5 μL 0.9% saline) or the same volume vehicle by intracerebroventricular injection (icv) 30 min prior to ischemia. Cresyl violet staining was used to observe the surviving neurons and 4-hydroxy-2-noneal (4-HNE) and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) immunostaining were used to detect the change of markers response to oxidative stress in hippocampal CA1 region. The spatial learning and memory function of the rats was evaluated using Morris water maze., Results: Compared with sham group, the number of surviving neurons in ischemia-reperfusion and vehicle groups significantly decreased in the hippocampal CA1 region (P<0.05), while administration of Keap1-tat significantly decreased the damage following GCI (P<0.05), and the dose of 50 μg existed the most effective neuroprotective role. Furthermore, immunostaining intensity of 4-HNE and 8-OHdG, markers of oxidative stress damage attenuated by Keap1-tat peptide as compared with vehicle group in CA1 region. Of significant interest, the time of finding underwater platform in Keap1-tat group animals was significantly short, and after removing the platform, the probe time of Keap1-tat group animals in the original quadrant where the platform was significantly increased compared with that of vehicle and I/R group animals (P<0.05)., Conclusion: Keap1-tat peptide can effectively attenuate neuronal damage in hippocampal CA1 region and improve learning and memory function, which might bedue to the attenuation of oxidative stress caused by GCI.

The mean atomic kinetic energies of the proton, Ke(H), and of the deuteron, Ke(D), were calculated in moderate and strongly hydrogen bonded (HB) systems, such as the ferro-electric crystals of the KDP type (XH2PO4, X = K, Cs, Rb, Tl), the DKDP (XD2PO4, X = K, Cs, Rb) type, and the X3H(SO4)2 superprotonic conductors (X = K, Rb). All calculations utilized the simulated partial phonon density of states, deduced from density functional theory based first-principle calculations and from empirical lattice dynamics simulations in which the Coulomb, short range, covalent, and van der Waals interactions were accounted for. The presently calculated Ke(H) values for the two systems were found to be in excellent agreement with published values obtained by deep inelastic neutron scattering measurements carried out using the VESUVIO instrument of the Rutherford Laboratory, UK. The Ke(H) values of the M3H(SO4)2 compounds, in which the hydrogen bonds are centro-symmetric, are much lower than those of the KDP type crystals, in direct consistency with the oxygen-oxygen distance ROO, being a measure of the HB strength.

Composite hemangioendothelioma (HE) is a rare vascular neoplasm of intermediate malignant potential that predominantly occurs within the dermis or subcutis of the extremities, and occurs in a wide age range. It is locally aggressive with a high rate of local recurrence, and more rarely regional lymph node or distant metastasis. Histologically, it is composed of a complex admixture of benign, intermediate and malignant vascular components. Although composite HE may contain angiosarcoma-like areas, its prognosis is better than that of pure angiosarcoma. We describe a case of composite HE presenting as a submandibular mass in a 43 year-old male, which included areas of prominent 'high grade' epithelioid angiosarcoma. This adds to the range of anatomic sites of these neoplasms, highlights the importance of recognition of the head and neck as a potential site, and emphasizes the importance of accurate diagnosis for correct management (including of long term follow up) and prognostication.

Diffusion coefficients of alloying elements in Mg are critical for the development of new Mg alloys for lightweight applications. Here we present the data set of the temperature-dependent dilute tracer diffusion coefficients for 47 substitutional alloying elements in hexagonal closed packed (hcp) Mg calculated from first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) by combining transition state theory and an 8-frequency model. Benchmark for the DFT calculations and systematic comparison with experimental diffusion data are also presented. The data set refers to "Diffusion coefficients of alloying elements in dilute Mg alloys: A comprehensive first-principles study" by Zhou et al. [1].

A systematic study of stacking fault energy (γ(SF)) resulting from induced alias shear deformation has been performed by means of first-principles calculations for dilute Ni-base superalloys (Ni(23)X and Ni(71)X) for various alloying elements (X) as a function of temperature. Twenty-six alloying elements are considered, i.e., Al, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hf, Ir, Mn, Mo, Nb, Os, Pd, Pt, Re, Rh, Ru, Sc, Si, Ta, Tc, Ti, V, W, Y, Zn, and Zr. The temperature dependence of γ(SF) is computed using the proposed quasistatic approach based on a predicted γ(SF)-volume-temperature relationship. Besides γ(SF), equilibrium volume and the normalized stacking fault energy (Γ(SF) = γ(SF)/Gb, with G the shear modulus and b the Burgers vector) are also studied as a function of temperature for the 26 alloying elements. The following conclusions are obtained: all alloying elements X studied herein decrease the γ(SF) of fcc Ni, approximately the further the alloying element X is from Ni on the periodic table, the larger the decrease of γ(SF) for the dilute Ni-X alloy, and roughly the γ(SF) of Ni-X decreases with increasing equilibrium volume. In addition, the values of γ(SF) for all Ni-X systems decrease with increasing temperature (except for Ni-Cr at higher Cr content), and the largest decrease is observed for pure Ni. Similar to the case of the shear modulus, the variation of γ(SF) for Ni-X systems due to various alloying elements is traceable from the distribution of (magnetization) charge density: the spherical distribution of charge density around a Ni atom, especially a smaller sphere, results in a lower value of γ(SF) due to the facility of redistribution of charges. Computed stacking fault energies and the related properties are in favorable accord with available experimental and theoretical data.

Objective: To study the pathogenesis and treatment of gluteal heterotopic ossification caused by injection., Methods: From April 2006 to May 2011, 4 old female patients with gluteal heterotopic ossification caused by injection were treated by resection. The average age was 71 years old ranging from 67 to 76. The illness were bilateral,the clinical character was pain and hard nodules in the both hip. The X-ray, CT and pathology matched the diagnosis of heterotopic ossification. Two of them were treated by totally removing the ossified tissues, and loosing the spastic and adhesive soft tissues. The other two were treated with local resection and soft-tissue lysis., Results: The wound of all patients healed well, and there were no complication. All patients were followed-up from 2 to 64 months(averaged 26 months). There were no lump and pain in the location of surgical resection., Conclusion: Gluteal heterotopic ossification caused by injection is the drug reaction produced by injecting benzyl alcohol or other drugs,and happens in adults. The key for the treatment is to remove part or all of the painful lump,and loose the local fascia and other soft tissues of the gluteal muscles.

We propose a first-principles approach for treating the unstable vibrational mode of transition states in solid-state diffusion. It allows one to determine a number of fundamental quantities associated with the transition state, in particular the enthalpy and entropy of migration and the characteristic vibrational frequency, along with their temperature dependences. Application to pure face centered cubic Al shows good agreement with available experimental measurements and previous theoretical calculations. The procedure is further applied in calculations of the migration properties of Mg, Si and Cu impurities in Al, and the differences among Mg, Si and Cu are discussed.

Recent years have seen a dramatic change in the pathological approach to ovarian mucinous neoplasms. A substantial proportion of tumours previously considered to be ovarian primaries actually represent secondary ovarian involvement by tumours elsewhere in the body. Two major categories of tumour have completely disappeared from the diagnostic spectrum: ovarian 'borderline' mucinous tumour associated with pseudomyxoma peritonei, and widely disseminated mucinous carcinomas. The emergent picture of true ovarian primary carcinoma of pure mucinous morphology is that this is a rare malignancy that is low grade and low stage at presentation in the vast majority of cases, with a very low likelihood of aggressive clinical behaviour. A large volume of literature has appeared concerning the pathological distinction of primary from metastatic ovarian mucinous neoplasms in view of the dramatically different prognosis and treacherously similar morphology. Clinicopathological parameters useful in the distinction of primary from metastatic mucinous ovarian carcinomas are reviewed. Major features favouring metastases are bilaterality, size <10 cm, surface involvement, extensive intra-abdominal spread and an extensive infiltrative pattern with desmoplasia. Two morphological patterns essentially exclude ovarian origin: colloid and signet ring carcinomas. Features favouring primary ovarian origin are unilaterality, large size >12 cm, smooth external surface and association with other ovarian pathology. An admixture of benign, borderline and malignant patterns in the same tumour favour primary origin, but can be misleading as a 'maturation' pattern in metastases can result in the same appearance.

The interfacial energies of three twin boundaries with low-index boundary planes: prismatic (101⁻0), basal O-terminated (0001), and basal Cr-terminated (0001), and the segregation energies of five doping elements (Ce, Hf, La, Y and Zr) have been calculated as a function of temperature. The static energies at 0 K were obtained through first-principles calculations and the energies at finite temperatures were derived based on the Debye model. The calculation results show that both the interfacial and segregation energies decrease as temperature increases and the segregation energies are found to be proportional to the ionic size mismatch and the interfacial energy. Our combined approaches suggest an efficient and less computationally intensive way to derive grain boundary energetics at finite temperatures.

Variations of energy, stress, and magnetic moment of fcc Ni as a response to shear deformation and the associated ideal shear strength (τ(IS)), intrinsic (γ(SF)) and unstable (γ(US)) stacking fault energies have been studied in terms of first-principles calculations under both the alias and affine shear regimes within the {111} slip plane along the <112> and <110> directions. It is found that (i) the intrinsic stacking fault energy γ(SF) is nearly independent of the shear deformation regimes used, albeit a slightly smaller value is predicted by pure shear (with relaxation) compared to the one from simple shear (without relaxation); (ii) the minimum ideal shear strength τ(IS) is obtained by pure alias shear of {111}<112>; and (iii) the dissociation of the 1/2[110] dislocation into two partial Shockley dislocations (1/6[211] + 1/6[121]) is observed under pure alias shear of {111}<110>. Based on the quasiharmonic approach from first-principles phonon calculations, the predicted γ(SF) has been extended to finite temperatures. In particular, using a proposed quasistatic approach on the basis of the predicted volume versus temperature relation, the temperature dependence of τ(IS) is also obtained. Both the γ(SF) and the τ(IS) of fcc Ni decrease with increasing temperature. The computed ideal shear strengths as well as the intrinsic and unstable stacking fault energies are in favorable accord with experiments and other predictions in the literature.

The structural, phonon, and thermodynamic properties of six TiO(2) polymorphs, i.e., rutile, anatase, columbite, baddeleyite, orthorhombic I, and cotunnite, have been systematically investigated by density functional theory. The predicted volumes, bulk modulus, and Debye temperature are in good agreement with experiments. The phonon dispersions of the TiO(2) polymorphs were studied by the supercell approach, whereas the long-range dipole-dipole interactions were calculated by linear response theory to reproduce the LO-TO splitting, making accurate prediction of phonon frequencies for the polar material TiO(2). The calculated phonon dispersions show that all TiO(2) polymorphs are dynamically stable at ambient pressure, indicating the high-pressure phases might be quenched to ambient conditions as ultrahard materials. Furthermore, the finite temperature thermodynamic properties of TiO(2) polymorphs were predicted accurately from the obtained phonon density of states, which is critical in the future study of the pressure-temperature phase diagram of TiO(2). The calculated Gibbs energies reveal that rutile is more stable than anatase at ambient pressure. Temperature-dependent elastic stiffness constants (c(ij)s), including both the isothermal and isoentropic ones, have been predicted for rhombohedral α-Al(2)O(3) and monoclinic θ-Al(2)O(3) in terms of a quasistatic approach, i.e., a combination of volume-dependent c(ij)s determined by a first-principles strain versus stress method and direction-dependent thermal expansions obtained by first-principles phonon calculations. A good agreement is observed between the predictions and the available experiments for α-Al(2)O(3), especially for the off-diagonal elastic constants. In addition, the temperature-dependent c(ij)s predicted herein, in particular the ones for metastable θ-Al(2)O(3), enable the stress analysis at elevated temperatures in thermally grown oxides containing α- and θ-Al(2)O(3), which are crucial to understand the failure of thermal barrier coatings in gas-turbine engines.

The structural and elastic properties of BiMnO(3) with monoclinic (C 2/c) and orthorhombic (Pnma) ferromagnetic (FM) structures have been studied by first-principles calculations within LDA + U and GGA + U approaches. The equilibrium volumes and bulk moduli of BiMnO(3) phases are evaluated by equation of state (EOS) fittings, and the bulk properties predicted by LDA + U calculations are in better agreement with experiment. The orthorhombic phase is found to be more stable than the monoclinic phase at ambient pressure. A monoclinic to monoclinic phase transition is predicted to occur at a pressure of about 10 GPa, which is ascribed to magnetism versus volume instability of monoclinic BiMnO(3). The single-crystal elastic stiffness constants c(ij)s of the monoclinic and orthorhombic phases are investigated using the stress-strain method. The c(46) of the monoclinic phase is predicted to be negative. In addition, the polycrystalline elastic properties including bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus, bulk modulus-shear modulus ratio, Poisson's ratio, and elastic anisotropy ratio are determined based on the calculated elastic constants. The presently predicted phase transition and elastic properties open new directions for investigation of the phase transitions in BiMnO(3), and provide helpful guidance for the future elastic constant measurements.

A first-principles approach to calculating the elastic stiffness coefficients at finite temperatures was proposed. It is based on the assumption that the temperature dependence of elastic stiffness coefficients mainly results from volume change as a function of temperature; it combines the first-principles calculations of elastic constants at 0 K and the first-principles phonon theory of thermal expansion. Its applications to elastic constants of Al, Cu, Ni, Mo, Ta, NiAl, and Ni₃Al from 0 K up to their respective melting points show excellent agreement between the predicted values and existing experimental measurements.

We propose a mixed-space approach using the accurate force constants calculated by the direct approach in real space and the dipole-dipole interactions calculated by linear response theory in reciprocal space, making the accurate prediction of phonon frequencies for polar materials possible using the direct approach as well as linear response theory. As examples, by using the present approach, we predict the first-principles phonon properties of the polar materials α-Al(2)O(3), MgO, c-SiC, and h-BN, which are in excellent agreement with available experimental data.
