Abstract

The extraction equilibrium of the system HNO3-tributylphosphate (TBP)-n-C7H16 is reported with the initial TBP concentration of 5, 35, 50, 66, 83 and 100 vol.% in the organic phase. The activity coefficient of aqueous nitric acid was calculated using Pitzer's equations, and those of the components in the organic phase were derived from experimental data according to thermodynamic principles. Six independently obtained equilibrium constant Ka values are in good agreement with each other. The average value of Ka is 0.26±0.03.

Abstract

The invention relates to a chromatographic method for interseparating platinum group metals from a feed solution, wherein the feed solution is oxidated prior to the chromatographic separation to reach a redox-potential of at least 900 mV, whereupon the solution may be aged for at least 12 hours to achieve maximum conversion of Ir(III) to Ir(IV). After elution of the Rh and Pt fractions reductive step elution is performed to accelerate elution of at least the Ir fraction. Iridium and rhodium are collected in different fractions of high purity.
