Purpose: Road traffic injuries (RTIs) have been one of the most serious public health problems in China. The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which traffic investment affects traffic fatalities in China as well as regional differences. Methods: The cohort study analyzed the correlation between traffic investment and traffic fatalities, incorporating additional factors such as economic conditions, road infrastructure, population density, and lighting. The selected variables included the number of traffic fatalities, traffic investment, urban per capita road area, urban road length, road mileage, urban road lighting, population size, and per capita gross domestic product. Relevant data between 2004 and 2020 were collected for an analysis using a fixed effect regression model. A p < 0.05 is considered statistically significant. To reduce the heterogeneity caused by regional differences, the provinces were divided into 6 groups according to administrative districts, and the clustering standard error analysis was carried out. Results: Overall, there has been a significant improvement in road safety in China from 2004 to 2020, but some regions show an increase in traffic fatalities. The model reveals that traffic investment is significantly and positively correlated with the number of traffic fatalities. Holding all other factors constant, each 10,000 yuan increase in transport investment was associated with an average increase of 0.22 road traffic fatalities. In the analysis of regional differences, there was a significant positive correlation between traffic investment and traffic fatalities in the Northwest region and an increase of 10,000 yuan leads to an increase of 0.47. There was a significant negative correlation between road mileage, urban road lighting system, and population and traffic fatalities. For example, holding other factors constant, a 10,000 km reduction in road length would increase the number of traffic deaths by 45.56. The model results of urban per capita road area, urban road length, per capita gross domestic product, and the explained variables showed that p > 0.100, which was not statistically significant. Conclusions: Therefore, traffic investments are essential for governments to develop measures to enhance road safety and reduce the risk of road fatalities. Adjusting traffic road investment and other covariates is conducive to improving traffic safety and reducing the risk of road fatalities. The road safety situation in different regions of China varies greatly. Local governments should consider the actual conditions to provide better road safety configuration policies.

Abstract Metabolic alterations, a hallmark of cancer, enable tumor cells to adapt to their environment by modulating glucose, lipid, and amino acid metabolism, which fuels rapid growth and contributes to treatment resistance. In primary breast cancer, metabolic shifts such as the Warburg effect and enhanced lipid synthesis are closely linked to chemotherapy failure. Similarly, metastatic lesions often display distinct metabolic profiles that not only sustain tumor growth but also confer resistance to targeted therapies and immunotherapies. The review emphasizes two major aspects: the mechanisms driving metabolic resistance in both primary and metastatic breast cancer, and how the unique metabolic environments in metastatic sites further complicate treatment. By targeting distinct metabolic vulnerabilities at both the primary and metastatic stages, new strategies could improve the efficacy of existing therapies and provide better outcomes for breast cancer patients.

Abstract Background Paraplegia after spinal cord ischemia is a devastating condition in the clinic. Here, we develop an awake rabbit model of spinal cord ischemia with delayed paraplegia and explore the influence of ambient temperature on the outcomes after injury. Methods A total of 47 male rabbits were involved in the present study. Transient spinal cord ischemia was induced by occluding the infrarenal abdominal aorta of awake rabbits at different ambient temperatures. To find the optimal conditions for developing delayed paraplegia, hindlimb motor function after ischemia was evaluated between experiments. Results The onset and magnitude of ischemic injury varied with the ambient temperature maintained during the peri‐ischemia period. More serious spinal cord injury occurred when ischemia was induced at higher temperatures. At 18°C, 25‐minute ischemia resulted in 74% of rabbits developing delayed paraplegia. At a temperature of 28°C or higher, most of the animals developed acute paraplegia immediately. While at 13°C, rabbits usually regained normal motor function without paraplegia. Conclusion This awake rabbit model is highly reproducible and will be helpful in future studies of delayed paraplegia after spinal cord ischemia. The ambient temperature must be considered while using this model during investigation of therapeutic interventions.

Abstract Recently, the scalarization of the Schwarzschild black hole has been extensively studied. In this work, we explore the scalarization of the Taub-NUT black hole within the context of the extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet theory, which admits a Ricci-flat Taub-NUT black hole as a solution. We carried out an analysis of the probe scalar field to identify the mass parameter and NUT parameter (m, n) where hairy black holes begin to emerge. Subsequently, we used the shooting method to construct the scalarized Taub-NUT black hole numerically. Unlike the Schwarzschild case, there are two branches of new hairy black holes that are smoothly connected. We calculated the entropy of the scalarized black holes and compared these entropies with those of scalar-free Taub-NUT black holes, finding that the entropies of the new hairy black holes are larger. A novel phenomenon emerges in this system: the entropy of the black holes at the bifurcation point is constant for a positive mass parameter. We then conjecture a maximal entropy bound for all scalarized black holes whose mass parameter at the bifurcation point is greater than zero.

Abstract The charge density wave (CDW), as a hallmark of vanadium-based kagome superconductor AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs), has attracted intensive attention. However, the fundamental controversy regarding the underlying mechanism of CDW therein persists. Recently, the vanadium-based bi-layered kagome metal ScV6Sn6, reported to exhibit a long-range charge order below 94 K, has emerged as a promising candidate to further clarify this core issue. Here, employing micro-focusing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (μ-ARPES) and first-principles calculations, we systematically studied the unique CDW order in vanadium-based bi-layered kagome metals by comparing ScV6Sn6 with its isostructural counterpart YV6Sn6, which lacks a CDW ground state. Combining ARPES data and the corresponding joint density of states (DOS), we suggest that the VHS nesting mechanism might be invalid in these materials. Besides, in ScV6Sn6, we identified multiple hybridization energy gaps resulting from CDW-induced band folding, along with an anomalous band dispersion, implying a potential electron-phonon coupling-driven mechanism underlying the formation of the CDW order. Our finding not only comprehensively maps the electronic structure of V-based bi-layer kagome metals but also provides constructive experimental evidence for the unique origin of CDW in this system.

In this study, the microstructure evolution and aging behavior of surface-nanocrystallized WE43 Mg alloy induced by ultrasonic shot peening at a cryogenic temperature were examined. The results reveal that the original coarse grains with an average grain size of 46.7 μm were refined to nanocrystalline grains with 31.5 nm in the nanocrystalline region, demonstrating a marked grain refinement effect. After aging treatment, the nanocrystalline region experienced two aging stages. During Stage Ⅰ, there was a rapid increase in hardness, and in Stage Ⅱ, it reached a maximum of 154.2 HV, representing a 105.6% improvement over the solution-treated alloy. Further microstructural characterization indicates that solute segregation initially occurred along the grain boundaries, leading to a rapid increase in hardness during Stage Ⅰ. Subsequently, two types of precipitates were observed both at the grain boundaries and within the grains during Stage Ⅱ, with the combined effects of solute segregation and precipitation contributing to a further increase in hardness.

Abstract Background M1 macrophages are closely associated with cardiac injury after myocardial infarction (MI). Increasing evidence shows that exosomes play a key role in pathophysiological regulation after MI, but the role of M1 macrophage-derived exosomes (M1-Exos) in myocardial regeneration remains unclear. In this study, we explored the impact of M1 macrophage-derived exosomes on cardiomyocytes regeneration in vitro and in vivo. Methods M0 macrophages were induced to differentiate into M1 macrophages with GM-CSF (50 ng/mL) and IFN-γ (20 ng/mL). Then M1-Exos were isolated and co-incubated with cardiomyocytes. Cardiomyocyte proliferation was detected by pH3 or ki67 staining. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) was used to test the level of miR-155 in macrophages, macrophage-derived exosomes and exosome-treated cardiomyocytes. MI model was constructed and LV-miR-155 was injected around the infarct area, the proliferation of cardiomyocytes was counted by pH3 or ki67 staining. The downstream gene and pathway of miR-155 were predicted and verified by dual-luciferase reporter gene assay, qPCR and immunoblotting analysis. IL-6 (50 ng/mL) was added to cardiomyocytes transfected with miR-155 mimics, and the proliferation of cardiomyocytes was calculated by immunofluorescence. The protein expressions of IL-6R, p-JAK2 and p-STAT3 were detected by Western blot. Results The results showed that M1-Exos suppressed cardiomyocytes proliferation. Meanwhile, miR-155 was highly expressed in M1-Exos and transferred to cardiomyocytes. miR-155 inhibited the proliferation of cardiomyocytes and antagonized the pro-proliferation effect of interleukin 6 (IL-6). Furthermore, miR-155 targeted gene IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) and inhibited the Janus kinase 2(JAK)/Signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT3) signaling pathway. Conclusion M1-Exos inhibited cardiomyocyte proliferation by delivering miR-155 and inhibiting the IL-6R/JAK/STAT3 signaling pathway. This study provided new insight and potential treatment strategy for the regulation of myocardial regeneration and cardiac repair by macrophages.

Abstract Adjuvant oxaliplatin plus S-1 (SOX) chemotherapy for gastric cancer (GC) after D2 gastrectomy has been proven effective. There has yet to be a study that evaluates adjuvant nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel (nab-paclitaxel) plus S-1. In this single-center, retrospective study, GC patients after D2 gastrectomy received either nab-paclitaxel plus S-1 (AS group) or SOX group were recruited between January 2018 and December 2020 in The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University. Intravenous nab-paclitaxel 120 mg/m2 or 260 mg/m2 and oxaliplatin 130 mg/m2 were administered as eight 3 week cycle, especially in the AS and SOX group. Patients received S-1 twice daily with a dose of 40 mg/m2 in the two groups on days 1–14 of each cycle. The end points were disease-free survival (DFS) rate at 3 years and adverse events (AEs). There were 56 eligible patients, 28 in the AS group and 35 in the SOX group. The 3 year DFS rate was 78.0% in AS group versus 70.7% in SOX group (p = 0.46). Subgroup analysis showed that the patients with signet-ring positive in the AS group had a prolonged DFS compared with the SOX group (40.0 vs. 13.8 m, p = 0.02). The diffuse-type GC or low differentiation in the AS group was associated with numerically prolonged DFS compared with the SOX group, but the association was not statistically significant (p = 0.27 and p = 0.15 especially). Leukopenia (14.3%) were the most prevalent AEs in the AS group, while thrombocytopenia (28.5%) in the SOX group. Neutropenia (7.1% in AS group) and thrombocytopenia (22.8% in SOX group) were the most common grade 3 or 4 AEs. In this study analyzing past data, a tendency towards a greater 3 year DFS was observed when using AS regimen in signet-ring positive patients. AS group had fewer thrombocytopenia compared to SOX group. More studies should be conducted with larger sample sizes.

AIM: To report a one-year clinical outcomes of low-dose laser cycloplasty (LCP) among malignant glaucoma patients. METHODS: In this prospective, multicenter, non-comparative clinical study, participants with malignant glaucoma were recruited and underwent LCP at eight ophthalmic centers in China. Patients were followed up at 1wk, 1, 3, 6, and 12mo. Intraocular pressure (IOP), number of glaucoma medications, anterior chamber depth (ACD), and complications were recorded. Anatomical success was defined as the reformation of the anterior chamber based on slit-lamp biomicroscopy. Recurrence was defined by the presence of a shallow or ?at anterior chamber after initial recovery from treatment. RESULTS: A total of 34 eyes received LCP. Background Exercise research targeting chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been conducted for more than 30 years, and the benefits of exercise for CKD patients have been progressively demonstrated. This study analyzes citation classics on clinical intervention trials on exercise training and CKD to describe the research landscape and hotspots through bibliometric analysis.Methods To identify clinical trials of exercise training interventions for CKD with more than 100 citations from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Extracted bibliometric information, participant information, and study characteristics of the included articles. The total citations, annual average citations, publication of year, author keywords, and study-related data were bibliometric analyzed and described using Excel 2019 and VOSviewer software.Results A total of 30 citation classics were included, with a total citation frequency of 102 to 279 (mean ± standard deviation: 148.4 ± 49.4). The American Journal of Kidney Diseases (n = 7) published the most (n = 7) classic citations in the field of CKD exercise research, and the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology was the most cited. The hotspot of research around CKD and exercise training interventions focused on population (hemodialysis and end-stage renal disease), exercise type (resistance training, yoga, and leg-cycling), and outcomes (cardiovascular indices, physical performance, psychological status, kidney function, physical activity). Reported dropout rates ranged from 0.0% to 47.4%.Conclusion A bibliometric analysis of citation classics on exercise training and CKD highlights the potential benefits of exercise as a non-pharmacological therapy for patients with CKD, as well as developments and hotspots in the field.

AbstractBackground Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is the most widespread and fatal pulmonary complication of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Existing knowledge on the prevalence and risk factors of rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) is inconclusive. Therefore, we designed this review to address this gap.Materials and Methods To find relevant observational studies discussing the prevalence and/or risk factors of RA-ILD, EMBASE, Web of Science, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library were explored. The pooled odds ratios (ORs) / hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated with a fixed/ random effects model. While subgroup analysis, meta-regression analysis and sensitivity analysis were carried out to determine the sources of heterogeneity, the I2 statistic was utilized to assess between-studies heterogeneity. Funnel plots and Egger’s test were employed to assess publication bias. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, our review was conducted.Results A total of 56 studies with 11,851 RA-ILD patients were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of RA-ILD was 18.7% (95% CI 15.8–21.6) with significant heterogeneity (I2 = 96.4%). The prevalence of RA-ILD was found to be more likely as a result of several identified factors, including male sex (ORs = 1.92 95% CI 1.70–2.16), older age (WMDs = 6.89, 95% CI 3.10–10.67), having a smoking history (ORs =1.91, 95% CI 1.48–2.47), pulmonary comorbidities predicted (HRs = 2.08, 95% CI 1.89–2.30), longer RA duration (ORs = 1.03, 95% CI 1.01–1.05), older age of RA onset (WMDs =4.46, 95% CI 0.63–8.29), positive RF (HRs = 1.15, 95%CI 0.75-1.77; ORs = 2.11, 95%CI 1.65–2.68), positive ACPA (ORs = 2.11, 95%CI 1.65–2.68), higher ESR (ORs = 1.008, 95%CI 1.002–1.014), moderate and high DAS28 (≥3.2) (ORs = 1.87, 95%CI 1.36–2.58), rheumatoid nodules (ORs = 1.87, 95% CI 1.18-2.98), LEF use (ORs = 1.42, 95%CI 1.08–1.87) and steroid use (HRs= 1.70, 1.13–2.55). The use of biological agents was a protective factor (HRs = 0.77, 95% CI 0.69–0.87).Conclusion(s) The pooled prevalence of RA-ILD in our study was approximately 18.7%. Furthermore, we identified 13 risk factors for RA-ILD, including male sex, older age, having a smoking history, pulmonary comorbidities, older age of RA onset, longer RA duration, positive RF, positive ACPA, higher ESR, moderate and high DAS28 (≥3.2), rheumatoid nodules, LEF use and steroid use. Additionally, biological agents use was a protective factor.

Purpose The number of clinical reports of acupuncture therapy in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is gradually increasing. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to examine the therapeutic role of acupuncture therapy in kidney function and common symptoms in CKD patients.Methods We searched Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang, and WeiPu for randomized controlled trials comparing acupuncture treatment with control or placebo groups. We assessed the effect of acupuncture therapy in CKD patients using a meta-analysis with the hartung-knapp-sidik-jonkman random effects model. In addition, we visualized keyword co-occurrence overlay visualization with the help of VOSviewer software to describe the research hotspots of acupuncture therapy and CKD.Results A total of 24 studies involving 1494 participants were included. Compared to the control group, acupuncture therapy reduced serum creatinine levels (standardized mean difference [SMD]: −0.57; 95% CI −1.05 to −0.09) and relieved pruritus (SMD: −2.20; 95% CI −3.84, −0.57) in patients with CKD, while the TSA showed that the included sample size did not exceed the required information size. The included studies did not report acupuncture-related adverse events.Conclusions Acupuncture is an effective and safe treatment for improving kidney function and relieving pruritic symptoms in patients with CKD, but the very low evidence may limit this conclusion. The TSA suggests that high-quality trials are needed to validate the efficacy of acupuncture therapy.

In recent years, the emergence and widespread dissemination of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has posed a significant threat to global public health and social development. In order to safely and effectively prevent and control the spread of coronavirus diseases, a profound understanding of virus-host interactions is paramount. Cellular autophagy, a process that safeguards cells by maintaining cellular homeostasis under diverse stress conditions. Xenophagy, specifically, can selectively degrade intracellular pathogens, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites, thus establishing a robust defense mechanism against such intruders. Coronaviruses have the ability to induce autophagy, and they manipulate this pathway to ensure their efficient replication. While progress has been made in elucidating the intricate relationship between coronaviruses and autophagy, a comprehensive summary of how autophagy either benefits or hinders viral replication remains elusive. In this review, we delve into the mechanisms that govern how different coronaviruses regulate autophagy. We also provide an in-depth analysis of virus-host interactions, particularly focusing on the latest data pertaining to SARS-CoV-2. Our aim is to lay a theoretical foundation for the development of novel coronavirus vaccines and the screening of potential drug targets.

As a group of emerging contaminants of global concern, tire additives and their transformation products (TATPs) are causing a severe threat to aquatic ecosystems, particularly the highly lethal effects of N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N’-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine quinone (6PPD-Q) on certain fish species. Yet, the contamination status of TATPs in the lake ecosystems remains largely uncharacterized. This study conducted the first nationwide monitoring of the distribution characteristics of TATPs in 208 lake sediments collected from five lake regions across China. All the 13 TATPs were identified in lake sediments, with the total levels varying between 1.4 and 1355 ng/g, and 4-hydroxydiphenylamine (4-OH-PPD) as the most dominant. Exertional heatstroke (EHS) is a life-threatening condition with potential for tissues and organs injury, including heart. Effective drug strategies to treat patients with EHS are warranted to unlock the therapeutic potential. Considering the cardioprotective effects of L-carnitine (LC), this study aimed to investigate the effects of LC on EHS-induced myocardial injury in rats and to explore the underlying mechanisms. Here, we found that LC exerted a greater protective effect on EHS-induced cardiac dysfunction and mortality, which also significantly attenuated certain negative effects, including increased myocardial apoptosis, pathological changes, and ultrastructural impairment, enhanced activity levels of such serum enzymes as AST, LDH, CK, and CK-MB, reduced BCL-2 expression, increased the expression of cleaved caspase-3 and the critical endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) indices like CHOP and GRP78 in EHS rats. Besides, pretreatment of EHS rats with PBA (4-Phenyl butyric acid), a chemical chaperone that attenuates ERS, restored BCL-2 expression, reduced the protein levels of cleaved caspase-3, CHOP, and GRP78. Furthermore, thapsigargin (TG), which induces ERS, enhanced the expression of BAX, cleaved caspase-3, CHOP, and GRP78, attenuated BCL-2 expression, and enhanced mitochondrial impairment in EHS + LC rats. Mechanismly, the protective effects of LC were mediated, at least partly, by inhibiting the activation of PERK pathway against ERS-associated myocardial damage. These results indicate that supplementation of LC might be a potential strategy to reduce myocardial injury by affecting ERS via inhibiting the PERK pathway against EHS.

BackgroundThe prevalence of obesity and its related ailments is on the rise, posing a substantial challenge to public health. Tea, widely enjoyed for its flavors, has shown notable potential in mitigating obesity. Yet, there remains a lack of exhaustive bibliometric studies in this domain.MethodsWe retrieved and analyzed multidimensional data concerning tea and obesity studies from January 2004 to June 2024, using the Web of Science Core Collection database. This bibliometric investigation utilized tools such as Bibliometrix, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer to gather and analyze data concerning geographical distribution, leading institutions, prolific authors, impactful journals, citation patterns, and prevalent keywords.ResultsThere has been a significant surge in publications relevant to this field within the last two decades. Notably, China, Hunan Agricultural University, and the journal Food and Function have emerged as leading contributors in terms of country, institution, and publication medium, respectively. Zhonghua Liu of Hunan Agricultural University has the distinction of most publications, whereas Joshua D. Lambert of The State University of New Jersey is the most cited author. Analyses of co-citations and frequently used keywords have identified critical focus areas within tea anti-obesity research. Current studies are primarily aimed at understanding the roles of tea components in regulating gut microbiota, boosting fat oxidation, and increasing metabolic rate. The research trajectory has progressed from preliminary mechanism studies and clinical trials to more sophisticated investigations into the mechanisms, particularly focusing on tea’s regulatory effects on gut microbiota.ConclusionThis study offers an intricate overview of the prevailing conditions, principal focus areas, and developmental trends in the research of tea’s role against obesity. It delivers a comprehensive summary and discourse on the recent progress in this field, emphasizing the study’s core findings and pivotal insights. Highlighting tea’s efficacy in obesity prevention and treatment, this study also points out the critical need for continued research in this area.

ObjectiveThis study investigates the sleep patterns among vocational college students and examines their association with anxiety and depression amidst the ongoing normalization of COVID-19 management strategies.MethodsIn the period of January to February 2022, a comprehensive survey was conducted involving a random sample of 3,300 students. By employing face-to-face interviews, data on general demographics, along with levels of anxiety, depression, and sleep quality, were meticulously gathered and analyzed.ResultsOut of the 3,049 questionnaires deemed valid for analysis, the prevalence rates for anxiety, depression, and insomnia were found to be 9.7, 14.1, and 81.9%, respectively. Through regression analysis, several factors were identified as significant predictors of insomnia: female gender, a self-perceived average or poor family economic status over the last year, moderate psychological stress due to the pandemic and its associated restrictions, extended daily screen time during the pandemic, absence of a routine physical exercise regime, significant disruption or alteration of daily life routines due to the pandemic, presence of anxiety and depression symptoms during the pandemic, and only partial restoration of normal life routines post-pandemic control measures (p

Self-assembled lipid-based nanoparticles have been shown to have improved therapeutic efficacy and lower toxic side effects. Breast cancer is a common type of malignant tumor in women. Conventional drugs such as doxorubicin (DOX) have shown low therapeutic efficacy and high drug toxicity in antitumor therapy. This paper surveys research on self-assembled lipid-based nanoparticles by categorizing them under three groups: self-assembled liposomal nanostructures, self-assembled niosomes, and self-assembled lipid–polymer hybrid nanoparticles. Subsequently, the structural features and operating mechanisms of each group are summarized individually along with examples of representative drugs from each group.

ABSTRACT Pulmonary cryptococcosis is a common complication in immunocompromised patients. In a mouse model of pulmonary cryptococcosis, Cryptococcus neoformans induces a type 2 immune response that is detrimental to host protection. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged as key players in the pathogenesis of infectious diseases. However, the roles and mechanisms of lncRNAs in fungal infection are largely elusive. In the present study, we aimed to explore the roles of LincR-PPP2R5C in pulmonary cryptococcosis. We observed an increase in the level of LincR-PPP2R5C in the lung tissues of C57BL/6J mice after tracheal infection with C. neoformans. Subsequently, we intratracheally infected LincR-PPP2R5C knockout (KO) mice and wild-type mice with C. neoformans. LincR-PPP2R5C deficiency mitigates C. neoformans infection, which can be demonstrated by extending survival time and decreasing fungal burden in the lung. In the lung tissues of infected LincR-PPP2R5C KO mice, there was a notable increase in the levels of type 2 cytokines [interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-5] and an increase in the number of neutrophils in both the lung tissue and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Mechanistically, the lack of LincR-PPP2R5C results in increased protein phosphatase 2A phosphorylation, thereby enhancing the fungicidal activity of neutrophils against Cryptococcus neoformans, with IL-4 playing a synergistic role in this process. Overall, LincR-PPP2R5C deficiency mitigated pulmonary cryptococcosis by increasing the fungicidal activity of neutrophils, which was associated with increased IL-4 levels. Our study presented specific evidence of the role of host-derived lncRNAs in the regulation of C. neoformans infection.IMPORTANCEPulmonary cryptococcosis is a human fungal disease caused by Cryptococcus neoformans, which is common not only in immunocompromised individuals but also in patients with normal immune function. Therefore, studying the control mechanisms of pulmonary cryptococcosis is highly important. Here, we demonstrated that the deletion of LincR-PPP2R5C leads to increased killing of C. neoformans by neutrophils, thereby reducing pulmonary cryptococcal infection. These findings will greatly enhance our understanding of the mechanisms by which lncRNAs regulate the pathogenesis of C. neoformans, facilitating the use of lncRNAs in pulmonary cryptococcosis therapy.

The metaverse has become a very important phenomenon in society because of the emergence of new technologies. The widespread adoption of the metaverse has generated significant discussions about the challenges and opportunities it presents. We invited three panelists to present their personal viewpoints on the metaverse in the 2022 AIS-SIG-ISAP Workshop on Information Systems in Asia-Pacific (ISAP). The discussion indicated that metaverse research is being conducted. Furthermore, it highlighted new research directions and offered research topics related to the advantages or disadvantages of the metaverse. The proposed research topics will offer new insights to academics and practitioners.

Abstract We apply the generalised Komar method proposed in [ arXiv:2208.05494 ] to Taub-NUT-AdS spacetime in the theory of Einstein gravity plus a cosmological constant. Based on a generalised closed 2-form, we derive the total mass and NUT charge of the Taub-NUT-AdS spacetime. Together with other thermodynamic quantities calculated through standard method, we conform the first law and Smarr relation. Then, we consider charged AdS NUT spacetimes in Einstein–Maxwell theory with a cosmological constant, and show that the generalised Komar method works, too. We obtain all the thermodynamic quantities, and the first law and Smarr relation are checked to be satisfied automatically.

Teunia, belonging to the family Cryptococcaceae of the order Tremellales, is a genus of plant-inhabiting fungi distributed across the globe. Its members form associations with different plant parts, including flowers, fruits, leaves, seeds, and twigs. Recent efforts have aimed to explore the diversity of Teunia in China, however, many geographical regions have not yet been explored. In this study, we included results of five Teunia yeast strains that were isolated from plant materials collected in Fujian, Guizhou and Henan provinces, with descriptions, illustrations, and phylogenetic analyses of three new species: T. acericola, T. mussaendrae isolated from leaf surfaces in Fujian, Guizhou and Henan Provinces, and T. qingyuanensis obtained from rotting wood in Fujian Province.

Abstract Inflammatory age (iAge) is a vital concept for understanding the intricate interplay between chronic inflammation and aging in the context of cancer. However, the importance of iAge-clock-related genes (iAge-CRGs) across cancers remains unexplored. This study aimed to explore the mechanisms and applications of these genes across diverse cancer types. We analyzed profiling data from over 10,000 individuals, covering 33 cancer types, 750 small molecule drugs, and 24 immune cell types. We focused on DCBLD2’s function at the single-cell level and computed an iAge-CRG score using GSVA. This score was correlated with cancer pathways, immune infiltration, and survival. A signature was then derived using univariate Cox and LASSO regression, followed by ROC curve analysis, nomogram construction, decision curve analysis, and immunocytochemistry. Our comprehensive analysis revealed epigenetic, genomic, and immunogenomic alterations in iAge-CRGs, especially DCBLD2, leading to abnormal expression. Aberrant DCBLD2 expression strongly correlated with cancer-associated fibroblast infiltration and prognosis in multiple cancers. Based on GSVA results, we developed a risk model using five iAge-CRGs, which proved to be an independent prognostic index for uveal melanoma (UVM) patients. We also systematically evaluated the correlation between the iAge-related signature risk score and immune cell infiltration. iAge-CRGs, particularly DCBLD2, emerge as potential targets for enhancing immunotherapy outcomes. The strong correlation between abnormal DCBLD2 expression, cancer-associated fibroblast infiltration, and patient survival across various cancers underscores their significance. Abstract Thermoelectrics have great potential for use in waste heat recovery to improve energy utilization. Moreover, serving as a solid-state heat pump, they have found practical application in cooling electronic products. Nevertheless, the scarcity of commercial Bi2Te3 raw materials has impeded the sustainable and widespread application of thermoelectric technology. In this study, we developed a low-cost and earth-abundant PbS compound with impressive thermoelectric performance. The optimized n-type PbS material achieved a record-high room temperature ZT of 0.64 in this system. Additionally, the first thermoelectric cooling device based on n-type PbS was fabricated, which exhibits a remarkable cooling temperature difference of ~36.9 K at room temperature. Meanwhile, the power generation efficiency of a single-leg device employing our n-type PbS material reaches ~8%, showing significant potential in harvesting waste heat into valuable electrical power. This study demonstrates the feasibility of sustainable n-type PbS as a viable alternative to commercial Bi2Te3, thereby extending the application of thermoelectrics.

Abstract Aims/Introduction Mitochondrial damage caused by oxidative stress is a main driver of pancreatic β‐cell dysfunction in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Prohibitin2 (PHB2) is a vital inner mitochondrial membrane protein that participates in mitophagy to remove the damaged mitochondria. This study aimed to investigate the role and mechanisms of PHB2‐mediated mitophagy in oxidative stress‐induced pancreatic β‐cell dysfunction. Materials and Methods PHB2 and mitophagy‐related protein expression were analyzed by real‐time polymerase chain reaction and western blotting in RINm5F cells treated with H2O2 and islets of diabetic rats. Mitophagy was observed by mitochondrial and lysosome colocalization. RINm5F cells were transfected by phb2 siRNA or overexpression plasmid to explore the role of PHB2 in mitophagy of RINm5F cells. The mechanism of Nrf2 regulating PHB2 was explored by Nrf2 inhibitor and agonist. Results The expression of PHB2, mitophagy related protein PINK1, and Parkin were decreased in RINm5F cells incubated with H2O2 and in islets of diabetic rats. Overexpression of PHB2 protected β‐cells from oxidative stress by promoting mitophagy and inhibiting cell apoptosis, whereas transfection with PHB2 siRNA suppressed mitophagy. Furthermore, PHB2‐mediated mitophagy induced by oxidative stress was through the Nrf2/PHB2 pathway in β‐cells. Antioxidant NAC alleviated oxidative stress injury by promoting PHB2‐mediated mitophagy. Conclusion Our study suggested that PHB2‐mediated mitophagy can protect β‐cells from apoptosis via the Nrf2/PHB2 pathway under oxidative stress. Antioxidants may protect β‐cell from oxidative stress by prompting PHB2‐mediated mitophagy. PHB2‐mediated mitophagy as a potential mechanism takes part in the oxidative stress induced β‐cell injury.
