The article considers the modal phrases of preference-comparison in terms of their semantic and pragmatic characteristics, as well as the modal functions implemented in the utterance by means of the English language. The author takes an up-to-date comprehensive approach to the study of comparative modality as a polymodality expressed in the form of modal phrases in the context of the analysis of the problems of axiological modality of a literary text. As a result of the conducted research, the ideas about the modality of the literary text were deepened. The author concludes that the logical basis of preference-comparison is structured by grammatical means that determine the relationship between the subject and the object of preference.

This article takes stock of the basic notions of information structure. There are two communicative goals to satisfy: making the information conveyed by the discourse easier for the reader/hearer to understand; indicating what the enunciator considers to be the most important. When translating from one language into another the information structure in most cases remains unchanged. However the text in the target language may not always be completely clear to the new recipient for a number of reasons, such as social and national differences between speakers of the two languages, or lack of realia in the target language. In this case the information structure needs extension in the form of descriptions, definitions, commentaries. This results either in amplification of the text in the target language or in its compression. The present work is based on an analysis of papers from American and British journals and periodicals. The article also deals with the peculiarities of the metaphor as a means of broader text compression in the titles of newspaper articles.

The article examines the features of anthroponyms in various linguistic aspects, examines the formal and meaningful properties of anthroponyms (using the example of the English language), etymology and formation methods. The article also analyzes the specifics of British personal names, highlights their main features. The aim is to identify the pragmatic potential of the anthroponym. In general, the anthroponymic system of the English language has many features that make it unique and promising for study. The authors conclude that anthroponyms (including English ones) perform a stylistic function, indicate the context of the events described, and reflect historical and social milestones in the development of a nation or country.

The present article examines the specifics of women's issues in artistic understanding in Victorian writers' works. The author notes the importance of considering various aspects of the functioning and gender relations change in the conditions of the XIX century English society transformation and the direct reflection of these processes in the literature. It is concluded that the female theme implementation in women writer's novels acquires, in comparison with the works of their predecessors, new features. The author substantiates the idea that the works created by J. Austen, the Bronte sisters and G. Eliot contribute – directly or indirectly – to the reassessment of values in favor of the private sphere of the woman's life and change the woman's role and functions in society.
