Methods of optical dynamic nuclear polarization open the door to the replenishable hyperpolarization of nuclear spins, boosting their nuclear magnetic resonance/imaging signatures by orders of magnitude. Nanodiamond powder rich in negatively charged nitrogen vacancy defect centers has recently emerged as one such promising platform, wherein 13C nuclei can be hyperpolarized through the optically pumped defects completely at room temperature. Given the compelling possibility of relaying this 13C polarization to nuclei in external liquids, there is an urgent need for the engineered production of highly “hyperpolarizable” diamond particles. Here, a systematic study of various material dimensions affecting optical 13C hyperpolarization in diamond particles is reported on. It is discovered surprisingly that diamond annealing at elevated temperatures ∼1720 °C has remarkable effects on the hyperpolarization levels enhancing them by above an order of magnitude over materials annealed through conventional means. It is demonstrated these gains arise from a simultaneous improvement in NV− electron relaxation/coherence times, as well as the reduction of paramagnetic content, and an increase in 13C relaxation lifetimes. This work suggests methods for the guided materials production of fluorescent, 13C hyperpolarized, nanodiamonds and pathways for their use as multimodal (optical and magnetic resonance) imaging and hyperpolarization agents.

The solubilization of sodium diclofenac (Na-DFC) in a glycerol monooleate-based emulsion triggers series of structural changes. Incorporation of Na-DFC, leads to formation of a reverse hexagonal mesophase between 2 and 5 wt% Na-DFC. Between 6 and 9 wt% Na-DFC, the hexagonal symmetry gradually transitions to a disordered lamellar mesophase. These structural shifts impact the system's storage modulus, structuring enthalpy, and structural diffusivity. Despite these transitions, the driving force for Na-DFC release remains consistent, leading to hypothesize that the interfacial structure remains unchanged during Na-DFC release. The nano-structural modifications imposed by the Na-DFC load and release were assessed by small-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXD), spin-probe electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR). The selective solubilization of Na-DFC was demonstrated by SAXD peak fittings, revealing an increase of hexagonally oriented rods at the expense of non-oriented micelles, rather than gradual micellar elongation. Computation of the EPR spectra also showcased the selective solubilization of Na-DFC at an enhanced free energy interface (γ), evidenced by step-wise variations in polarity, microviscosity, and order parameters. Additionally, NQR analysis highlighted a higher anisotropy for sodium compared to deuterium, linking the selective solubilization of Na-DFC to heterogeneous structural transformations. These findings underscore the heterogeneous nature of solubilization-release processes, driven by locally increased micellar free energy. Consequently, the loaded Na-DFC interfaces maintain a constant γ, ensuring a consistent release driving force despite the structural transitions affecting the matrix. The design of functional supramolecular assemblies from individual molecular building blocks is a fundamental challenge in chemistry and material science. We report on the fabrication of "honeycomb" films by light-induced coassembly of diacetylene derivatives and carbon dots. Specifically, modulating noncovalent interactions between the carbon dots, macrocyclic diacetylene, and anthraquinone diacetylene facilitates formation of thin films exhibiting a long-range, uniform pore structure. We show that light irradiation at distinct wavelengths plays a key role in the assembly process and generation of unique macro-porous morphology, by both initiating interactions between the carbon dots and the anthraquinone moieties and giving rise to the topotactic polymerization of the polydiacetylene network. We further demonstrate utilization of the macro-porous film as a photocatalytic platform for water pollutant degradation and as potential supercapacitor electrodes, both applications taking advantage of the high surface area, hydrophobicity, and pore structure of the film.

A dynamic thermodynamic resolution method for converting ( R / S )-BINOL (1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diol) into ( R )-BINOL in 100% theoretical yield is reported. This technique involves mixing ( R / S )-BINOL with N -benzyl cinchonidinium bromide (1 equiv) and a [Cu 2 (tmeda) 2 (μ-OH) 2 ]Br 2 (2.5 mol %) redox catalyst in acetonitrile. In the background of this process is the observation that the energy for atropoisomerization decreases significantly when an electron is removed from BINOL. Therefore, it is possible to convert both enantiomers into the thermodynamically favorable [ N -benzyl cinchonidinium bromide·( R )-BINOL] adduct.

The biosynthesis of glycopeptide antibiotics such as vancomycin and other biologically active biaryl-bridged and diaryl ether-linked macrocyclic peptides includes key enzymatic oxidative phenol macrocyclization(s) of linear precursors. However, a simple and step-economical biomimetic version of this transformation remains underdeveloped. Here, we report highly efficient conditions for preparing biaryl-bridged and diaryl ether-linked macrocyclic peptides based on multicopper(II) clusters. The selective syntheses of ring models of vancomycin and the arylomycin cyclic core illustrate the potential of this technology to facilitate the assembly of complex antibiotic macrocyclic peptides, whose syntheses are considered highly challenging. The unprecedented ability of multicopper(II) clusters to chelate tethered diphenols and promote intramolecular over intermolecular coupling reactions demonstrates that copper clusters can catalyze redox transformations that cannot be accessed by smaller metal catalysts.

High-temperature annealing is a promising but still mainly unexplored method for enhancing spin properties of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond particles. After high-energy irradiation, the formation of NV centers in diamond particles is typically accomplished via annealing at temperatures in the range of 800-900 °C for 1-2 h to promote vacancy diffusion. Here, we investigate the effects of conventional annealing (900 °C for 2 h) against annealing at a much higher temperature of 1600 °C for the same annealing duration for particles ranging in size from 100 nm to 15  μ m using electron paramagnetic resonance and optical characterization. At this high temperature, the vacancy-assisted diffusion of nitrogen can occur. Previously, the annealing of diamond particles at this temperature was performed over short time scales because of concerns of particle graphitization. Our results demonstrate that particles that survive this prolonged 1600 °C annealing show increased NV T 1 and T 2 electron spin relaxation times in 1 and 15  μ m particles, due to the removal of fast relaxing spins. Additionally, this high-temperature annealing also boosts magnetically induced fluorescence contrast of NV centers for particle sizes ranging from 100 nm to 15  μ m. At the same time, the content of NV centers is decreased fewfold and reaches a level of <0.5 ppm. The photoelectrochemical oxidation of organic molecules into valuable chemicals is a promising technology, but its development is hampered by the poor stability of photoanodic materials in aqueous solutions, low faradaic efficiency, low product selectivity, and a narrow working pH range. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of value-added aldehydes and carboxylic acids with clean hydrogen (H 2 ) production in water using a photoelectrochemical cell based solely on polymeric carbon nitride (CN) as the photoanode. Isotope labeling measurements and DFT calculations reveal a preferential adsorption of benzyl alcohol and molecular oxygen to the CN layer, enabling fast proton abstraction and oxygen reduction, which leads to the synthesis of an aldehyde at the first step. Further oxidation affords the corresponding acid. The CN photoanode exhibits excellent stability (>40 h) and activity for the oxidation of a wide range of substituted benzyl alcohols with high yield, selectivity (up to 99%), and faradaic efficiency (>90%)., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Utilizing the inherent ability of Lindquist-type hexaniobate cluster-anions, [Nb 6 O 19 ] 8- , to serve as oxo-donor ligands in complexes with transition-metal cations, we report the synthesis and characterization of the first all-inorganic "ferric" wheel, Li 48 [(Nb 6 O 19 ) 8 Fe 8 (OH) 8 ]·88H 2 O, comprised of eight Fe atoms linked by eight hexaniobate cluster-anion ligands. Bond valence sum analysis of the X-ray structure and the synthesis conditions themselves indicate that the Fe atoms are in the +3 oxidation state. This is confirmed by magnetic susceptibility and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements which indicate the presence of high spin ( S = 5/2) Fe(III) ions. In addition, magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal long-range superexchange antiferromagnetic interactions between the hexaniobate-ligand separated Fe 3+ ions ( J = -0.22 cm -1 ). More generally, the results suggest the use of hexaniobate cluster-anions as linkers in the synthesis of other two- or three-dimensional polyoxometalate framework structures.

The synthesis, transformation, and application in catalysis of triphenyllead hydroperoxide, the first dioxygen lead complex, are described. Triphenyllead hydroperoxide is characterized by 207 Pb nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing the first one-dimensional (1D) coordination peroxo polymer. Photolytic isomorphous transformation of Ph 3 PbOOH yields a mixed hydroxo/superoxo crystalline structure, the first nonalkali superoxo crystalline metal salt, which is stable up to 100 °C. Upon further photolysis, another isomorphous transformation of the superoxide to hydroxide is observed. These are the first single-crystal-to-single-crystal hydroperoxide-to-superoxide and then to hydroxide transformations reported to date. Photolysis of triphenyllead hydroperoxide yields two forms of superoxide-doped crystalline structures that are distinguished by widely different characteristic relaxation times. The use of Ph 3 PbOOH as an easy-to-handle solid two-electron oxidant for the highly enantioselective epoxidation of olefins is described.

The deposition of metal oxides is essential to the fabrication of numerous multicomponent solid-state devices and catalysts. However, the reproducible formation of homogeneous metal oxide films or of nanoparticle dispersions at solid interfaces remains an ongoing challenge. Here we report that molecular hexaniobate cluster anion complexes of structurally and electronically distinct fragments of cubic-spinel and monoclinic Co 3 O 4 can serve as tractable yet well-defined functional analogues of bulk cobalt oxide. Notably, the energies of the highest-occupied and lowest-unoccupied molecular orbitals (HOMO and LUMO) of the molecular complexes, 1 , closely match the valence- and conduction-band (VB and CB) energies of the parent bulk oxides. Use of 1 as a molecular analogue of the parent oxides is demonstrated by its remarkably simple deployment as a cocatalyst for direct Z-scheme reduction of CO 2 by solar light and water. Namely, evaporation of an aqueous solution of 1 on TiO 2 -coated fluorinated tin oxide windows (TiO 2 /FTO), immersion in wet acetonitrile, and irradiation by simulated solar light under an atmosphere of CO 2 give H 2 , CO, and CH 4 in ratios nearly identical to those obtained using 20 nm spinel-Co 3 O 4 nanocrystals, but 15 times more rapidly on a Co basis and more rapidly overall than other reported systems. Detailed investigation of the photocatalytic properties of 1 on TiO 2 /FTO includes confirmation of a direct Z-scheme charge-carrier migration pathway by in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. More generally, the findings point to a potentially important new role for coordination chemistry that bridges the conceptual divide between molecular and solid-state science.

Purpose: Testing the potential use of saline suspension of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-coated gadolinium(Gd)-grafted detonation nanodiamonds (DND) as a novel contrast agent in MRI., Methods: Stable saline suspensions of highly purified de-agglomerated Gd-grafted DND particles coated by a PVP protective shell were prepared. T 1 and T 2 proton relaxivities of the suspensions with varying gadolinium concentration were measured at 8 Tesla. A series of ex vivo (phantom) and in vivo dynamic scans were obtained in 3 Tesla MRI using PVP-coated Gd-grafted DND and gadoterate meglumin in equal concentrations of gadolinium, and then T 1 -weighted hyperintensity was compared., Results: The proton relaxivities of PVP-coated Gd-grafted DND were found to be r 1 = 15.9 ± 0.8 s -1 mM -1 and r 2 = 262 ± 15 s -1 mM -1 , respectively, which are somewhat less than those for uncoated Gd-grafted DND but still high enough. Ex vivo MRI evaluation of PVP-coated Gd-grafted DND results with a dose-dependent T 1 -weighted hyperintensity with a significant advantage over the same for gadoterate meglumin. The same was found when the 2 contrast agents were tested in vivo., Conclusion: The novel MRI contrast agent - saline suspensions of PVP-coated Gd-grafted DND - provides significantly higher signal intensities than the common tracer gadoterate meglumin, therefore increasing its potential for a safer use in clinics., (© 2021 International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.)

We demonstrate room-temperature 13 C hyperpolarization by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) using optically polarized triplet electron spins in two polycrystalline systems: pentacene-doped [carboxyl- 13 C] benzoic acid and microdiamonds containing nitrogen-vacancy (NV - ) centers. For both samples, the integrated solid effect (ISE) is used to polarize the 13 C spin system in magnetic fields of 350-400 mT. In the benzoic acid sample, the 13 C spin polarization is enhanced by up to 0.12 % through direct electron-to- 13 C polarization transfer without performing dynamic 1 H polarization followed by 1 H - 13 C cross-polarization. In addition, the ISE has been successfully applied to polarize naturally abundant 13 C spins in a microdiamond sample to 0.01 %. Mitochondria have emerged as important determinants in cancer progression and malignancy. However, the role of mitochondrial membranes in cancer onset and progression has not been thoroughly investigated. This study compares the structural and functional properties of mitochondrial membranes in prostate and colon cancer cells in comparison to normal mitochondria, and possible therapeutic implications of these membrane changes. Specifically, isolation of cell mitochondria and preparation of inverted sub-mitochondrial particles (SMPs) illuminated significant cancer-induced modulations of membrane lipid compositions, fluidity, and activity of cytochrome c oxidase, one of the key mitochondrial enzymes. The experimental data further show that cancer-associated membrane transformations may account for mitochondria targeting by betulinic acid and resveratrol, known anti-cancer molecules. Overall, this study probes the relationship between cancer and mitochondrial membrane transformations, underlying a potential therapeutic significance for mitochondrial membrane targeting in cancer., (Copyright © 2020. A breakthrough "superoxide colloidal solution route" for low-temperature synthesis of barium and strontium stannate perovskites and their doped analogues was recently introduced. The synthesis starts from hydrogen peroxide-rich stannate solutions and yields a so-called "crystalline superoxide molecular cluster" that is converted by low temperature (<300 °C) to the respective perovskites. In this paper, the so-called "crystalline superoxide molecular cluster" is identified as a superoxide-free, barium trihydroxo(hydroperoxo)peroxostannate, BaSn(OH) 3 (OOH)(OO) phase (BHHPS). EPR and Raman spectroscopy studies reveal the absence of superoxide in this crystalline phase. FTIR of the deuterated sample, 119 Sn NMR, and elemental analysis uncovered the empirical formula, H 4 O 7 SnBa with two peroxides per each tin element. Rietveld refinement of the XRD confirms the BHHPS cubic phase with replacement of the perovskite oxygen atoms by the OH- and OOH-ligands and peroxobridging groups.

Objectives: Detonation nanodiamonds (DND) with Gd 3+ ions directly grafted to the DND surface have recently demonstrated enhanced relaxivity for protons in aqueous suspensions. Herewith, the relaxivity measurements were done on a series of suspensions with the gadolinium content varied by changing number of Gd 3+ ions grafted per each DND particle whereas the DND content in each suspension was kept the same. Such an approach to vary the contrast agent content differs from that commonly used in the relaxivity measurements. In the common approach, contrast agents are directly dissolved/suspended in media. Aiming to test validity of the unconventional approach, in the present study we follow the common way of measurement relaxivity: using variable concentrations of carriers (DND particles) in aqueous suspension keeping the number of Gd 3+ ions per each carrier fixed., Materials and Methods: 1 H NMR relaxation measurements of aqueous suspensions of DND with Gd 3+ ions directly grafted to the DND surface were carried out at room temperature (293 K or 20 °C) in the external magnetic field B 0  = 8.0 T., Results and Conclusions: Comparative study of two approaches for measuring relaxivity in suspensions containing DND as magnetic entities' carriers reveals complete identity of techniques in use.

The halogenation of alcohols under mild conditions expedited by the presence of substoichiometric amounts of thiourea additives is presented. The amount of thiourea added dictates the pathway of the reaction, which may diverge from the desired halogenation reaction toward oxidation of the alcohol, in the absence of thiourea, or toward starting material recovery when excess thiourea is used. Both bromination and chlorination were highly efficient for primary, secondary, tertiary, and benzyl alcohols and tolerate a broad range of functional groups. Detailed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies, isotopic labeling, and other control experiments suggest a radical-based mechanism. The fact that the reaction is carried out at ambient conditions, uses ubiquitous and inexpensive reagents, boasts a wide scope, and can be made highly atom economic, makes this new methodology a very appealing option for this archetypical organic reaction.

Nanodiamonds containing negatively charged triplet (having an electron spin S = 1) nitrogen-vacancy (NV - ) centers are an extraordinary room-temperature quantum system, whose electron spins may be polarized and read out optically even in a single nanocrystal. In this Viewpoint we promote a simple but reliable method to identify, attribute, and quantify these triplet defects in a polycrystalline sample using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The characterization relies on a specific "forbidden" transition ("Δ M S = 2"), which appears at about half the central magnetic field and shows a remarkably small anisotropy. In particular, we emphasize that this method is by far not limited to NV - centers in diamond but could become an important characterization tool for novel triplet defects in various types of nanoparticles.

The use of gem-diborylalkenes as radical-reactive groups is explored for the first time. These reactions provide an efficient and general method for the photochemical conversion of gem-diborylalkenes to rapidly access 1,1-bisborylalkanes. This method exploits a novel photoredox decarboxylative radical addition to gem-diborylalkenes to afford α-gem-diboryl carbon-centered radicals, which benefit from additional stability by virtue of an interaction with the empty p-orbitals on borons. The reaction offers a highly modular and regioselective approach to γ-amino gem-diborylalkanes. Furthermore, EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations have provided insight into the radical mechanism underlying the photochemistry reaction and the stability of the bis-metalated radicals, respectively., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Microemulsions (MEs) have gained increasing interest as carriers of hydrophobic bioactives in the last decades. However, it is still difficult to control the uptake and the release of bioactives directly extracted from plants. In this study, modified ME nanodroplets (nano-sized self-assembled liquids, NSSLs) were employed as extraction medium of gossypol, a toxic component of cottonseed. Loading was performed using both pure gossypol, and gossypol obtained by extraction from cottonseed. We achieved two goals: i) remove gossypol from cottonseed to obtain cotton-oil free of gossypol; and ii) extract gossypol directly into a nano-delivery vehicle for biomedical purposes. Structural and dynamical information on the unloaded and gossypol-loaded NSSL systems were obtained by self-diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance, SD-NMR, and spin-probe electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies. The results showed that NSSL formed fluid water-in-oil (W/O) nano domains at the lowest water contents; a more viscous bicontinuous structure at comparable oil and water contents, and, finally, oil-in-water (O/W, micellar-like) at the higher concentration of water. These micellar-like structures were more fluid at the external hydrated surface, as demonstrated by SD-NMR, while the lipidic region tested by EPR revealed an increasing packing. In all these structures, gossypol mainly localized in the lipophilic region close to the water interface. Overall, SD-NMR and EPR provided complementary information, helping to clarify the structural properties of NSSLs formed at different water contents and their ability to incorporate gossypol also directly from cottonseed-NSSL mixtures., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Nanodiamonds containing negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV - ) centers are versatile nanosensors thanks to their optical and spin properties. While currently most fluorescent nanodiamonds in use have at least a size of a few tens of nanometers, the challenge lies in engineering the smallest nanodiamonds containing a single NV - defect. Such a tiny nanocrystal with a single NV - center is an "optical spin label" for biomolecules, which can be detected in a fluorescence microscope. In this paper, we address two key issues toward this goal using detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs) of 4-5 nm in size. The DND samples are treated first with electron irradiation to create more vacancies. With the aid of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, we confirm a steady increase of negatively charged NV - centers with higher fluence. This leads to a 4 times higher concentration in NV - defects after irradiation with 2 MeV electrons at a fluence of 5 × 10 18 e - /cm 2 . Interestingly, we observe that the annealing of DND does not increase the number of NV - centers, which is in contrast to bulk diamond and larger nanodiamonds. Since DNDs are strongly aggregated after the irradiation process, we apply a boiling acid treatment as a second step to fabricate monodisperse DNDs enriched in NV - centers. These are two important steps toward "optical spin labels" having a single-digit nanometer range size that could be used for bioimaging and nanosensing.

Pharmaceutical applications of microemulsions (MEs) as drug delivery vehicles are recently gaining scientific and practical interests. Most MEs are able to solubilize bioactive molecules, but, at present, they cannot guarantee either controlled release of the drugs or significant advantage in the bioavailability of the bioactives. This study proposes to incorporate the modified ME structures, or nanodomains, into a natural polymeric film, to be used as a stable and capacious reservoir of drug-loaded nanodomains. These nanodomain-loaded films may release the nanodroplets along with the drug molecules in a slow and controlled way. Gellan gum, an anionic polysaccharide, was used in aqueous solution as the film former, and curcumin, hydrophobic polyphenol, served as the guest molecule in the loaded systems. Films were prepared by using empty and curcumin-loaded MEs. It is imperative to verify the persistence of the ME structure upon the dissolution of the film mimicking its behavior when in contact with a human physiological aqueous environment via reaching the cell membranes. For this purpose, the films were dissolved, and the reconstituted ME structure was compared with the ME structure before film formation. Characterization of these structures, before and after dissolution, was achieved using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and self-diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance (SD-NMR) techniques. Specific spin probes were inserted in the system, and a computer-aided analysis of the EPR spectra was performed to provide information on nanodomain microstructure assemblies. In addition, the SD-NMR profile of each component was analyzed to extract information on the diffusivity of the ME components before film formation and after ME reconstitution. The EPR and SD-NMR results were in good agreement to each other. The most important finding was that, after film dissolution, the ME nanodomains were reversibly and spontaneously reformed. It was also found that the film did not perturb the ME-nanodomain structure embedded in it. The film remained transparent and the bioactive curcumin was easily solubilized into the ME-droplet/water interface even after film dissolution. The combined techniques confirmed that the film constituted by bioactive-loaded MEs can serve as novel drug delivery vehicles.

Diamond particles containing color centers-fluorescent crystallographic defects embedded within the diamond lattice-outperform other classes of fluorophores by providing a combination of unmatched photostability, intriguing coupled magneto-optical properties, intrinsic biocompatibility, and outstanding mechanical and chemical robustness. This exceptional combination of properties positions fluorescent diamond particles as unique fluorophores with emerging applications in a variety of fields, including bioimaging, ultrasensitive metrology at the nanoscale, fluorescent tags in industrial applications, and even potentially as magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents. However, production of fluorescent nanodiamond (FND) is nontrivial, since it requires irradiation with high-energy particles to displace carbon atoms and create vacancies-a primary constituent in the majority color centers. In this review, centrally focused on material developments, major steps of FND production are discussed with emphasis on current challenges in the field and possible solutions. The authors demonstrate how the combination of fluorescent spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance provides valuable insight into the types of radiation-induced defects formed and their evolution upon thermal annealing, thereby guiding FND performance optimization. A recent breakthrough process allowing for production of fluorescent diamond particles with vibrant blue, green, and red fluorescence is also discussed. Finally, the authors conclude with demonstrations of a few FND applications in the life science arena and in industry.

Kuzmin et al. reported on the application of the 3He NMR relaxometry technique to localization of intrinsic paramagnetic defects in detonation nanodiamond (DND) particles. We found some inconsistencies in the DND characterization, the model of paramagnetic defects' allocation used in that work as well as the estimation of distances between 3He NMR probes and paramagnetic defects, which question the results obtained.

Tabby is a pattern of short irregular stripes, usually related to domestic cats. We have produced Tabby patterns on graphene by attaching fluorine atoms running as monoatomic chains in crystallographic directions. Separated by non-fluorinated sp 2 carbon ribbons, sp 3 -hybridized carbon atoms bonded to zigzag fluorine chains produce sp 2 -sp 3 interfaces and spin-polarized edge states localized on both sides of the chains. We have compared two kinds of fluorinated graphite samples C 2 F x , with x near to 1 and x substantially below 1. The magnetic susceptibility of C 2 F x (x < 1) shows a broad maximum and a thermally activated spin gap behaviour that can be understood in a two-leg spin ladder model with ferromagnetic legs and antiferromagnetic rungs; the spin gap constitutes about 450 K. Besides, stable room-temperature ferromagnetism is observed in C 2 F x (x < 1) samples: the crossover to a three-dimensional magnetic behaviour is due to the onset of interlayer interactions. Similarly prepared C 2 F x (x ≈ 1) samples demonstrate features of two-dimensional magnetism without signs of high-temperature magnetic ordering, but with transition to a superparamagnetic state below 40 K instead. The magnetism of the Tabby graphene is stable until 520 K, which is the temperature of the structural reconstruction of fluorinated graphite.

Dendrimer nanostructures are of eminent interest in biomedical applications because of their uniform and well-defined molecular size and shape, and their ability to cross cell membranes and reduce the risk of premature clearance from the human body. Dendrimers perform as gene and drug carriers and have also shown significant therapeutic properties for treating cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. A complex drug delivery system, based on a dendrimer solubilized in the aqueous core of a water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsion (ME) along with the drug may combine the advantages of both dendrimers and MEs to provide better control of drug release. We propose a new microemulsion composed of drug-permitted surfactants and dendrimer that can be used as a potential controlled drug delivery nanosystem. The influence of second generation poly(propyleneimine) (PPI-G2) dendrimer; solubilized in (W/O) ME with a capacity of up to 25 wt% PPI-G2 at various pHs; and their interactions with the surfactant phosphatidylcholine (PC), cosurfactant (butanol), and water was studied. SAXS and EPR measurements indicated that increasing PPI-G2 concentration reduces droplet curvature and increases droplet size thus increasing macro-(SAXS) and micro-(EPR) order degree. Furthermore, SD-NMR and ATR-FTIR show stronger interactions between PPI-G2 and water molecules at the expense of PC and butanol headgroups hydration, which increases microviscosity (EPR). PPI-G2's effect is somewhat opposite to the increasing water phase effect, thus reducing the amount of free water (DSC) and slowing the mobility of all ME components (SD-NMR).

A bioinspired iron-catalyzed consecutive oxidative cross-coupling reaction between a single phenolic unit and nucleophilic arenes was developed. This sustainable transformation offers a selective synthetic strategy for the preparation of complex polyaryl compounds directly from readily available phenols. With the aid of electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, it was demonstrated that the groups ortho to the phenolic functionality (whether hydrogen, methyl, or methoxy) direct the regioselectivity (ortho, para, or meta via dienone-phenol rearrangement) and chemoselectivity (C-C coupling or C-O coupling) in this multistep process.

Development of graphene spintronic devices relies on transforming it into a material with a spin order. Attempts to make graphene magnetic by introducing zigzag edge states have failed due to energetically unstable structure of torn zigzag edges. Here, we report on the formation of nanoridges, i.e., stable crystallographically oriented fluorine monoatomic chains, and provide experimental evidence for strongly coupled magnetic states at the graphene-fluorographene interfaces. From the first principle calculations, the spins at the localized edge states are ferromagnetically ordered within each of the zigzag interface whereas the spin interaction across a nanoridge is antiferromagnetic. Magnetic susceptibility data agree with this physical picture and exhibit behaviour typical of quantum spin-ladder system with ferromagnetic legs and antiferromagnetic rungs. The exchange coupling constant along the rungs is measured to be 450 K. The coupling is strong enough to consider graphene with fluorine nanoridges as a candidate for a room temperature spintronics material.

Size dependence of physical properties of nanodiamond particles is of crucial importance for various applications in which defect density and location as well as relaxation processes play a significant role. In this work, the impact of defects induced by milling of micron-sized synthetic diamonds was studied by magnetic resonance techniques as a function of the particle size. EPR and (13)C NMR studies of highly purified commercial synthetic micro- and nanodiamonds were done for various fractions separated by sizes. Noticeable acceleration of (13)C nuclear spin-lattice relaxation with decreasing particle size was found. We showed that this effect is caused by the contribution to relaxation coming from the surface paramagnetic centers induced by sample milling. The developed theory of the spin-lattice relaxation for such a case shows good compliance with the experiment.

Two non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), sodium diclofenac (Na-DFC) and celecoxib (CLXB) were solubilized within cubic and lamellar mesophases as carriers for transdermal drug delivery. SD-NMR, SAXS, ATR-FTIR, and EPR measurements were performed to examine the systems' characteristics and the interactions between the drugs and their hosting mesophases. The amphiphilic drug Na-DFC was found to incorporate at the interfaces of the cubic and lamellar mesophases and thus to act as a cosurfactant and a "structure stabilizer". It increased the order degree and the interactions between the GMO molecules and led the systems toward denser packing. CLXB exhibits an opposite effect on the mesophases. Its solubilization within both systems is accompanied with significant channel swelling and decrease in the order degree. The hydrophobic, rigid and bulky CLXB behaves as a "structure breaker", incorporated between the GMO tails, disturbing the mesophase packing and enhancing the repulsion at the tails region, limiting their close binding. Release experiments from Franz cells revealed that Na-DFC release is dependent on the quantity of water within the hosting mesophase as the water-rich formulation exhibits 1.5-fold enhancement in the release of the drug, compared to the lamellar phase. In contrast, CLXB release was not influenced by the water quantity, hinting that the release mechanisms of the drugs are different while Na-DFC diffuses from the water channels to the external phase, CLXB diffusion occurs through the continuous lipophilic region. The difference in the solubilization sites and interactions of each drug with the mesophases affect their release profiles and determine the preferred formulations for each drug's delivery vehicle., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Sodium diclofenac (Na-DFC) and celecoxib (CLXB) are common nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drugs which suffer from poor bioavailability and severe side effects when consumed orally, and their transdermal delivery might present important advantages. In this study, the drugs were solubilized in cubic and lamellar mesophases as transdermal delivery vehicles, and a cell-penetrating peptide, HIV-TAT (TAT), was examined as a skin penetration enhancer. SD-NMR, ATR-FTIR, and EPR measurements revealed that, in the cubic mesophase (which is rich in water content), TAT populates the aqueous cores and binds water, while in the dense lamellar system (with the lower water content) TAT is bound also to the glycerol monooleate (GMO) and increases the microviscosity and the order degree. TAT secondary structure in the cubic system was found to be a random coil while once it was embedded in the closely packed lamellar system it transforms to a more ordered compact state of β-turns arranged around the GMO headgroups. TAT remarkably increased the diffusion of Na-DFC and CLXB from the cubic systems by 6- and 9-fold enhancement, respectively. TAT effect on drug diffusion from the lamellar systems was limited to an increase of 1.3- and 1.7-fold, respectively. The dense packing and strong binding in the lamellar phase led to slow diffusion rates and slower drug release in controlled pattern. These effects of the chemical composition and vehicle geometry on drug diffusion are demonstrated with the impacts of TAT which can be specifically utilized for controlling skin delivery of drugs as required.

In the recent decades superoxide [O(2-.) ] has become the subject of considerable interest. Nonetheless, generation of superoxide compounds is still a substantial challenge. The standard methods for synthesis of superoxide derivatives are either through the oxidation of molten alkali metals with hot air or by using electrolytic reduction of oxygen in aprotic solvent such as dimethylformamide. No methodology is available for the generation of superoxides in protic solutions and particularly not in water. We report on the first nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of the high-temperature nanodiamond-to-onion transformation. (1)H, (13)C NMR and EPR spectra of the initial nanodiamond samples and those annealed at 600, 700, 800 and 1800 ° C were measured. For the samples annealed at 600 to 800 ° C, our NMR data reveal the early stages of the surface modification, as well as a progressive increase in sp(2) carbon content with increased annealing temperature. Such quantitative experimental data were recorded for the first time. These findings correlate with EPR data on the sensitivity of the dangling bond EPR line width to air content, progressing with rising annealing temperature, that evidences consequent graphitization of the external layers of the diamond core. The sample annealed at 1800 ° C shows complete conversion of nanodiamond particles into carbon onions.

A complex system, based on a dendrimer solubilized in the aqueous core of water-in-oil microemulsion, may combine the advantages of both dendrimers and microemulsions to provide better control of drug release. We report for the first time the use of EPR technique to determine the effect of solubilized dendrimer on the structure of the microemulsion. The solubilized poly(propyleneimine) (PPI-G2) interacts with sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT). EPR analysis provided information on polarity, microviscosity, and molecular order of the systems. Polarity and microviscosity increased from unloaded water-in-oil microemulsion to the system loaded with 0.2 wt % PPI-G2, but remained unchanged with higher PPI-G2 loads. The degree of order also increased with 0.2 wt % PPI-G2 with only minor additional increase with larger quantities (25 wt %) of PPI-G2. Variations in pH only slightly affected the structure of microemulsion in the absence and presence of the loaded dendrimers. Aliphatic oils with longer lipophilic chains enhanced the structural order of the microemulsion. On increasing water content, polarity and degree of order increased. PPI-G2 dendrimer in small loads is attracted by the negatively charged AOT and thus intercalates in the interface of the droplets. Yet, at higher PPI-G2 loads, the excess molecules are solubilized in the water core.

Intrinsic paramagnetic defects in ∼5 nm sized nanodiamonds, produced by various dynamic synthesis (DySND) techniques (detonation, shock-wave, pulsed laser ablation of solid carbon containing targets), have been studied by multi-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). X-band (9-10 GHz) EPR spectra of DySND, in addition to the main intensive singlet Lorentzian-like EPR signal, reveal a low intensity doublet pattern within the half-field (HF) region (g ∼ 4). On transferring spectra to the Q-band (34 GHz) the shape of the HF pattern changes and splitting between doublet components is reduced from 10.4 to 2.6 mT. The HF patterns observed are attributed to the 'forbidden' ΔM(S) = 2 transitions between the Zeeman levels of some spin-triplet (S = 1) centers. The model of two triplet centers with g ∼ 2.003 and zero-field splitting parameters D(1) = 0.095 cm(-1) (TR1) and D(2) = 0.030 cm(-1) (TR2) satisfactorily describes experimental results at both microwave frequencies. The spin-triplet-type defects are observed in a wide variety of DySND samples irrespective of industrial supplier, cooling and carbon soot refinement methods, initial purity, disintegration, or subsequent targeted chemical modification. This indicates that the intrinsic defects with S = 1 in DySND systems are of universal origin.

Insulin entrapment within a monoolein-based reverse hexagonal (H(II)) mesophase was investigated under temperature-dependent conditions at acidic (pH 3) and basic (pH 8) conditions. Studying the structure of the host H(II) system and the interactions of insulin under temperature-dependent conditions has great impact on the enhancement of its thermal stabilization and controlled release for the purposes of transdermal delivery. Small angle X-ray spectroscopy (SAXS) measurements show that pH variation and/or insulin entrapment preserve the hexagonal structure and do not influence the lattice parameter. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) spectra indicate that, although insulin interacts with hydroxyl groups of GMO in the interface region, it is not affected by pH variations. Hence different microenvironments within the H(II) mesophase were monitored by a computer-aided electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis using 5-doxylstearic acid (5-DSA) as a pH-dependent probe. The microviscosity, micropolarity, order of systems, and distribution of the probes in different microenvironments were influenced by three factors: temperature, pH, and insulin solubilization. When the temperature is increased, microviscosity and order parameters decreased at both pH 3 and 8, presenting different decrease trends. It was found that, at pH 3, the protein perturbs the lipid structure while "pushing aside" the un-ionized 5-DSA probe to fit into the narrow water cylinders. At the interface region (pH 8), the probe was distributed in two differently structured environments that significantly modifies by increasing temperature. Insulin loading within the H(II) mesophase decreased the order and microviscosity of both the microenvironments and increased their micropolarity. Finally, the EPR analysis also provides information about the unfolding/denaturation of insulin within the channel at high temperatures.

Spin diffusion and spin-lattice relaxation in solids containing paramagnetic impurities under influence of a multiple-pulse spin-locking radio-frequency sequence are studied theoretically and experimentally. The diffusion equation obtained provides a clue for determination of the time dependent magnetization. The spin-lattice relaxation time is calculated as a function of the correlation time and multiple-pulse field parameters. From the experimental data the spin diffusion coefficient, the radius of the spin diffusion barrier, and the correlation time for very slow molecular motion in polycrystalline (C(2)F)(n) system are estimated and found to be D∼7.1×10(-12)cm(2)/s, r(c)∼4.8×10(-10)m, and τ(c)∼10.2μs, respectively., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Inc. Using microemulsions (ME) as delivery vehicles requires understanding whether water-insoluble molecules are delivered by an interaction of the ME system with the dietary mixed micelles (DMM) in the small intestine to give new mixed micelles, or by alternate paths. Diluted DMM and ME systems were mixed at various weight ratios to address this question. The individual and mixed systems were characterized by physical techniques that address this interaction from different aspects. This research showed that increased DMM concentration in ME/DMM mixed systems caused: (1) increased conformational order of the acyl chains and perturbed hydrogen bonds between the ethoxylate headgroups (based on ATR-FTIR results); (2) significant increase in microviscosity (from 1.7 to 3.3ns) (based on EPR results); (3) increased diffusivity of the surfactant molecules compared to their diffusivity in pure ME droplets, and decreased diffusivity of the taurochenodeoxycholate molecules compared to their diffusivities in pure DMM micelles (based on PGSE-NMR results); (4) formation or modification of intramolecular interactions (based on NOESY-NMR results); (5) decreased average droplet diameter and increased droplet density per unit area compared to pure ME systems (based on DLS and cryo-TEM results); and (6) fluorescence resonance energy transfer between two dyes (diphenylhexatriene and Nile Red), which were solubilized in each system separately (based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer results). These results show that DMM and ME interact to create ME-DMM mixed micelles, providing a potential pathway for delivering solubilized molecules., (2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.)

We report on the first nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) investigation of inorganic fullerene-like MoS(2) nanoparticles. Spectra of bulk 2H-MoS(2) samples have also been measured for comparison. The similarity between the measured quadrupole coupling constants and chemical shielding anisotropy parameters for bulk and fullerene-like MoS(2) reflects the nearly identical local crystalline environments of the Mo atoms in these two materials. EPR measurements show that fullerene-like MoS(2) exhibits a larger density of dangling bonds carrying unpaired electrons, indicative of them having a more defective structure than the bulk sample. The latter observation explains the increase in the spin-lattice relaxation rate observed in the NMR measurements for this sample in comparison with the bulk 2H- MoS(2) ones.

Chiral electroseparation is demonstrated, for the first time, by a low molecular weight organogel filled capillary. Five pairs of dansylated amino acids were separated by copper ligand exchange on a trans-(1S,2S)-1,2-bis-(dodecylamido) cyclohexane (1) gel in methanol. Low molecular weight organogels are emerging materials that form stable, fibrillar, thermoreversible and thixotropic gels without covalent bonding of their monomeric building blocks. The dependence of chiral resolution and complex formation stability on the pH*, the ratio between copper and the D-valine selector, as well as other parameters were investigated revealing trends that were unparalleled in previously reports on copper ligand exchange of dansylated amino acids. These observations were explained in view of a simple stacking model of (1) and the difference in axial ligation of the amide carbonyl backbone of the gel to the dansyl D- or L-amino acid:D-valine:copper ternary complexes.

Neonate erythrocytes are more susceptible to oxidizing drugs than adults; however, there are controversial reports in the literature regarding the total antioxidant capacity of neonate blood. Stable nitroxide radicals (NRs) are reduced by blood and some other biological materials to the corresponding hydroxylamines. The kinetics of the nitroxide's disappearance using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, provides useful biochemical and biophysical information about the antioxidant properties of biological systems. In order to investigate the antioxidant properties in the newborn's blood, we applied this novel method on 38 umbilical vein blood samples and 40 healthy adults. The NR, 5-Dimethylaminonaphthalene-1-sulfonyl-4-amino-2,2,6,6,-tetramethyl-piperidine-oxyl (R), was used for this purpose. Ascorbate is the only known natural antioxidant that reduces R. We found that the reduction rates of R in neonate's whole blood are significantly higher (P < 0.001) than the reduction rates of R in adult's whole blood. However, there were no significant differences in the antioxidant capacity between the two groups. Newborn's blood has significantly higher ability to deal with oxidative stress, caused by R, in comparison with adult blood. We suggest that the system that responds to the recycling of ascorbate is more efficient in neonate blood than in adult's blood.

A nitronyl nitroxide radical covalently linked to an organic fluorophore, pyrene, was used to detect nitric oxide (NO) from freshly excited tissues. This approach is based on the phenomenon of the intramolecular fluorescence quenching of the fluorophore fragment by the nitroxide. The pyrene-nitronyl (PN) reacts with NO to yield a pyrene-imino nitroxide radical (PI) and NO(2). Conversion of PN to PI is accompanied by changes in the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum from a five-line pattern (two equivalent N nuclei) into a seven-line pattern (two nonequivalent N nuclei). The transformation of the EPR signal is accompanied by an increase in the fluorescence intensity since the imino nitroxide radical is a weaker quencher than the nitronyl one. The results indicate that the fluorescence measurements enable detection of nanomolar concentrations of NO compared to a sensitivity threshold of only several micromolar for the EPR technique. The method was applied to the determination of NO and S-nitroso compounds in tissue from pig trachea epithelia. The measured basal flux of S-nitroso compounds obtained from the tissues was about 1.2 nmol/g x min, and NO-synthase stimulated by extracellular adenosine 5'-triphosphate produced NO flux of 0.9 nmol/g x min.

The kinetics of reduction of the radical R*, 5-dimethylaminonaphthalene-1-sulfonyl-4-amino-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidine-oxyl by blood and its components were studied using the EPR technique. The results demonstrate that R* is adsorbed to the outer surface of the membrane and does not penetrate into the erythrocytes. A series of control experiments in PBS demonstrate that ascorbate is the only natural reducing agent that reacts with R*. The observed first order rate of disappearance of the nitroxide radical k, is: k(blood) > k(eryth) > k(plasma) and k(blood) approximately = k(eryth) + k(plasma). The results demonstrate that: a. The erythrocytes catalyze the reduction of R* by ascorbate. b. The rate of reduction of the radical is high though it does not penetrate the cells. c. In human erythrocytes there is an efficient electron transfer route through the cell membrane. d. The study points out that R* is a suitable spin label for measuring the reduction kinetics and antioxidant capacity in blood as expressed by reduction by ascorbate.

The synthesis and the crystal structure of the first compound containing Nb(3) triangular clusters bonded to fluorine ligands are presented in this work. The structure of Nb(3)IF(7)L(NbL(2))(0.25) with L = O and F, determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, is based on a Nb(3)I(i)F(i)(3)F(a)(8)L(a) unit and a NbL(6) octahedron (tetragonal, space group I4/m, a = 13.8638(3) A, c = 8.9183(2) A, V = 1714.14(7) A(3), Z = 8). Two crystallographic positions (noted L5 and L6) are randomly occupied by fluorine and oxygen with two different F:O occupancies. These L ligands build an octahedral site for a single niobium atom, located between the units. The four L5 ligands of the NbL(6) octahedron are shared with four Nb(3) cluster units, while the two other L6 ligands are terminal. The Nb(3) cluster is face-capped by one iodine and edge-bridged by three fluorine ligands. Two of the three niobium atoms constituting the cluster are bonded to three additional apical fluorine ligands, while the third one is bonded to two fluorines and one L5 ligand. The Nb(3) cluster is linked to six adjacent ones via all the apical fluorine ligands. The developed formula of the unit is therefore Nb(3)I(i)F(i)(3)F(a)(-)(a)(8/2)L(a) according to the Schäfer and Schnering notation. The oxidation state of the single niobium and the random distribution of fluorine and oxygen on the two L sites will be discussed on the basis of structural analysis, the bond valence method, and IR and EPR measurements. The structural results will be compared to those of previously reported niobium compounds containing NbF(6) or Nb(F,O)(6) octahedra.

A fluorophore-nitroxide free radical dual-functional probe (FN) was utilized to study the kinetics of ascorbate (AH(-)) binding to Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA). Since the free radical fragment in the FN probe intramolecularly quenches fluorescence, ascorbate reduction of the nitroxide function is accompanied by a concomitant fluorescence intensity increase from the fluorophore. Thus, both fluorescence and the EPR techniques could be utilized to measure the reaction rate. In the presence of BSA protein, the observed rate of the overall process is the sum of that from at least two reactions: the reaction between free ascorbate and free probe, and the reaction between bound ascorbate and bound probe. Our findings show that the observed rate is strongly dependent on the ionic strength of the medium. A corollary of this observation is the indication of a purely electrostatic interaction between ascorbate and the BSA protein. This conclusion was further corroborated by 1H NMR measurement of the transverse relaxation time, T(2), of ascorbate protons in BSA solutions. Ascorbate ion was released from the ascorbate/BSA ensemble in the presence of increasing concentrations of NaCl. Binding constants of AH(-) to BSA were calculated at different ionic strengths at pH 7.4. Furthermore, an increase in ionic strength did not affect the ability of albumin to protect ascorbate against autoxidation. This suggests that the protein's protective antioxidant effect may be attributed to BSA binding of trace quantities of transition-metal cations (rather than ascorbate binding to BSA). This conclusion is supported by ascorbate UV-absorption measurements in the presence of albumin and Cu(2+) ions as a function of ionic strength.

The fluorescence intensity of the fluorophore in dansyl piperidine-nitroxide is intramolecularly quenched by the nitroxyl fragment. Therefore, the oxidation of ascorbic acid by the fluorophore-nitroxide (FN) probe can be monitored by two independent methods: steady-state fluorescence and electron paramagnetic resonance. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) affects the rate of this reaction. The influence of BSA on the rate is attributed to the adsorption of both ascorbate and the probe to BSA. Adsorption of ascorbate to BSA is confirmed by NMR relaxation experiments. The spatial distribution of the molecules on the BSA surface changes the availability of ascorbate and FN to each other. The results also point out that, in the presence of BSA, the autoxidation of ascorbate is significantly slowed down. The effect is studied at different pH values and explained in terms of the electrostatic interaction between the ascorbate anion and the BSA molecule.

Since peptide quinones possess great clinical potential in targeted chemotherapy, several series of novel N-quinonyl amino acids have been synthesized and their first products of reduction were studied by EPR spectroscopy. EPR spectra of the corresponding radical adducts were identified by computer simulation. The dependence between the splitting constants and the chemical structure of the N-quinonyl amino acids anion radicals was examined.

We present a detailed theoretical and experimental NQR multiple-pulse spin-locking study of spin-lattice relaxation and spin diffusion processes in the presence of paramagnetic impurities in solids. The relaxation function of the nuclear spin system at the beginning of the relaxation process is given by exp (-t/T1rho)alpha, where T1rho is spin-lattice relaxation time in rotating frame and alpha = d/6, d is the sample dimensionality. Then the relaxation proceeds asymptotically to an exponential function of time, which was attributed to the spin-diffusion regime. Using the experimental data obtained from the analysis of those two relaxation regimes in gamma-irradiated powdered NaClO3, spin diffusion coefficient has been determined and the radius of the diffusion barrier has been estimated.

A new method for quantitative analysis of vitamin C in biological and chemical liquids was proposed. The method is based on the use of dual molecule consisting of a fluorescent chromophore and a nitroxide radical. In the dual molecule, the nitroxide acts as a quencher of the fluorescence of the chromophore fragment. Reduction of the nitroxide fragment by ascorbic acid results in decay of ESR signal and enhancement of the fluorescence. By performing the series of pseudo-first-order reactions between the dual molecule and ascorbic acid and consequent plotting rate constants versus ascorbic acid concentrations the calibration curves for the vitamin C analysis were obtained. Variations of chemical structure of fluorophore and nitroxide fragments allow to regulate fluorescent properties and redox potentials of the dual molecules. The proposed fluorophore-nitroxide hybrids retain all features of the spin labels and fluorescence probes gaining new advantages for monitoring redox reactions and radical processes by two independent techniques: ESR and steady-state fluorescent spectroscopy. The method was applied to the vitamin C analysis in commercial fruit juices.
