Nanodiamonds containing negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV$^-$) centers are versatile room-temperature quantum sensors in a growing field of research. Yet, knowledge regarding the NV-formation mechanism in very small particles is still limited. This study focuses on the formation of the smallest NV$^-$-containing diamonds, 5 nm detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs). As a reliable method to quantify NV$^-$ centers in nanodiamonds, half-field signals in electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy are recorded. By comparing the NV$^-$ concentration with a series of nanodiamonds from high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) synthesis (10 - 100 nm), it is shown that the formation process in 5 nm DNDs is unique in several aspects. NV$^-$ centers in DNDs are already formed at the stage of electron irradiation, without the need for high-temperature annealing. The effect is explained in terms of "self-annealing", where size and type dependent effects enable vacancy migration close to room temperature. Although our experiments show that NV$^-$ concentration generally increases with particle size, remarkably, the NV$^-$ concentration in 5 nm DNDs surpasses that of 20 nm-sized nanodiamonds. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the ten times higher substitutional nitrogen concentration in DNDs compensates the vacancy loss induced by the large relative particle surface. Upon electron irradiation at a fluence of $1.5 \times 10 ^{19}$ e$^-$/cm$^2$, DNDs show a 12.5-fold increment in the NV$^-$ concentration with no sign of saturation. These findings can be of interest for the creation of defects in other very small semiconductor nanoparticles beyond NV-nanodiamonds as quantum sensors.

The evolution of the polycrystalline pattern of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of intrinsic and induced paramagnetic centers in an ensemble of submicrometer diamond particles on diminishing average particle size is considered. Recent experimental data unambiguously demonstrate consistent reduction and then zeroing of typical hyperfine pattern from P1 centers on approaching a certain particle size and below it. These changes are accompanied by appearance and strengthening of new structureless signals. In small particles the electron wave function of a surface paramagnetic center is delocalized over the whole nanoparticle. In result the electron spin "experiences" the average field of all surrounding nuclei, which is zero. At the same time, the paramagnetic centers localized in the bulk of a nanoparticle are also cut off the hyperfine interaction due to the electron spin diffusion. Thus, upon the nanodiamond particle size decreases the hyperfine related features of the polycrystalline EPR spectrum become weaker and the spectrum appear to be structureless.

Methods of optical dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) open the door to the replenishable hyperpolarization of nuclear spins, boosting their NMR/MRI signature by orders of magnitude. Nanodiamond powder rich in negatively charged Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) defect centers has recently emerged as one such promising platform, wherein 13C nuclei can be hyperpolarized through the optically pumped defects completely at room temperature and at low magnetic fields. Given the compelling possibility of relaying this 13C polarization to nuclei in external liquids, there is an urgent need for the engineered production of highly "hyperpolarizable" diamond particles. In this paper, we report on a systematic study of various material dimensions affecting optical 13C hyperpolarization in diamond particles -- especially electron irradiation and annealing conditions that drive NV center formation. We discover surprisingly that diamond annealing at elevated temperatures close to 1720C have remarkable effects on the hyperpolarization levels, enhancing them by upto 36-fold over materials annealed through conventional means. We unravel the intriguing material origins of these gains, and demonstrate they arise from a simultaneous improvement in NV electron relaxation time and coherence time, as well as the reduction of paramagnetic content, and an increase in 13C relaxation lifetimes. Overall this points to significant recovery of the diamond lattice from radiation damage as a result of the high-temperature annealing. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of air-physisorbed defective carbon nano-onions evidences in favor of microwave assisted formation of weakly-bound paramagnetic complexes comprising negatively-charged O2- ions and edge carbon atoms carrying pi-electronic spins. These complexes being located on the graphene edges are stable at low temperatures but irreversibly dissociate at temperatures above 50-60 K. These EPR findings are justified by density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrating transfer of an electron from the zigzag edge of graphene-like material to oxygen molecule physisorbed on the graphene sheet edge. This charge transfer causes changing the spin state of the adsorbed oxygen molecule from S = 1 to S = 1/2 one. DFT calculations show significant changes of adsorption energy of oxygen molecule and robustness of the charge transfer to variations of the graphene-like substrate morphology (flat and corrugated mono- and bi-layered graphene) as well as edges passivation. The presence of H- and COOH- terminated edge carbon sites with such corrugated substrate morphology allows formation of ZE-O2- paramagnetic complexes characterized by small (<50 meV) binding energies and also explains their irreversible dissociation as revealed by EPR., Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, accepted in Carbon journal

High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy reveal a polyhedral multi-shell fullerene-like structure of astralen carbon nanoparticles. The polyhedra consist of large flat graphitic faces connected by defective edge regions with presumably pentagon-like structure. The faces comprise a stacking of 20-50 planar graphene sheets with inter-sheet distance of ~ 0.340 nm. Average sizes of the particles and their flat faces are ~ 40 nm and ~ 15 nm, respectively. The astralen particles are suggested to have defect-free sp^2 flat faces and all defects condense at their polyhedral edges. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectra of polycrystalline astralen samples reveal two components: a very broad signal with DHpp > 1 T and an asymmetric narrow one centered close to g = 2.00. The latter consists of two overlapping Lorentzian lines. All spectral components are independent of ambient pressure. The intensities of all EPR signals show no changes on decreasing temperature from T = 300 K down to 4 K demonstrating the Pauli paramagnetism. Electron spin-lattice relaxation times T1e remain very short within the same temperature range. Temperature dependent 13C Nuclear Magneti? Resonance (NMR) measurements yield nuclear spin-lattice relaxation times T1n ~ T^-0.612. The exponent in the T1n(T)-dependence for astralen falls between the metallic behavior, T1n ~ T^-1 (Korringa relation), and the semiconductor behavior, T1n ~T^-0.5. All unusual magnetic resonance features of astralen are attributed to delocalized charge carriers which amount considerably exceeds that of spins localized in defects on multi-shell polyhedra edges., Comment: 32 pages, 5 figures

We report on a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) materials produced by detonation technique. Analysis of the 13C and 1H NMR spectra, spin-spin and spin-lattice relaxation times in purified UNCD samples is presented. Our measurements show that UNCD particles consist of a diamond core that is partially covered by a sp2-carbon fullerene-like shell. The uncovered part of outer diamond surface comprises a number of hydrocarbon groups that saturate the dangling bonds. Our findings are discussed along with recent calculations of the UNCD structure. Significant increase in the spin-lattice relaxation rate (in comparison with that of natural diamond), as well as stretched exponential character of the magnetization recovery, are attributed to the interaction of nuclear spins with paramagnetic centers which are likely fabrication-driven dangling bonds with unpaired electrons.
