The global shear capacity of steel–concrete composite downstand cellular beams with precast hollow-core units is an important calculation as it affects the span-to-depth ratios and the amount of material used, hence affecting the embodied CO2 calculation when designers are producing floor grids. This paper presents a reliable tool that can be used by designers to alter and optimise grip options during the preliminary design stages, without the need to run onerous calculations. The global shear capacity prediction formula is developed using five machine learning models. First, a finite element model database is developed. The influence of the opening diameter, web opening spacing, tee-section height, concrete topping thickness, interaction degree, and the number of shear studs above the web opening are investigated. Reliability analysis is conducted to assess the design method and propose new partial safety factors. The Catboost regressor algorithm presented better accuracy compared to the other algorithms. An equation to predict the shear capacity of composite cellular beams with hollow-core units is proposed using gene expression programming. The use of circular hollow sections (CHS) has increased in recent years owing to its excellent mechanical behaviour including axial compression and torsional resistance as well as its aesthetic appearance. They are popular in a wide range of structural members, including beams, columns, trusses and arches. The behaviour of hot‐finished CHS beam‐columns made from normal‐ and high‐strength steels is the main focus of this article. A particular attention is given to predict the ultimate buckling resistance of CHS beam‐columns using the recent advancement of the artificial neural network (ANN). Finite element (FE) models were established and validated to generate an extensive parametric study. The ANN model is trained and validated using a total of 3439 data points collected from the generated FE models and experimental tests available in the literature. A comprehensive comparative analysis with the design rules in Eurocode 3 is conducted to evaluate the performance of the developed ANN model. It is shown that the proposed ANN‐based design formula provides a reliable means for predicting the buckling resistance of the CHS beam‐columns. This formula can be easily implemented in any programming software, providing an excellent basis for engineers and designers to predict the buckling resistance of the CHS beam–columns with a straightforward procedure in an efficient and sustainable manner with least computational time. The durability of reinforced concrete (RC) structures and infrastructure has been the subject of significant attention from the engineering research community in recent years, mainly owing to the deterioration of RC elements due to corrosion of the embedded steel reinforcement. In this context, stainless steel reinforcement can provide an efficient solution to enhance the expected lifetime of concrete structures, reducing the damage due to corrosion of the reinforcement and carbonation and deterioration of the concrete. However, current international design standards for reinforced concrete structures do not include appropriate guidance for stainless steel reinforced concrete (SSRC). In order to investigate the behaviour of stainless steel RC beams, a series of six beam tests was conducted and is discussed herein. The key performance measures for RC beams such as load-deflection response, cracking behaviour and deflections at service load are assessed. The validity and applicability of existing design rules, which were developed for carbon steel RC, are also examined for stainless steel reinforced concrete members. The majority of mechanical components in nuclear power plants must be designed to withstand extreme cyclic loading conditions. In fact, when these components are subjected to low cycle fatigue, machining imperfections are considered one of the most significant factors limiting their service life. In the present work, using finite element analysis, a methodology has been suggested to predict the fatigue life of cylindrical parts made of 316 SS, at ambient temperature, under nominal strain amplitude ranging from ± 0.5 to ±1.2% with various surface roughness conditions. Two different multiaxial strain-life criteria have been considered to estimate the fatigue life, namely Brown-Miller and maximum shear strain. The comparison between the predicted and the experimental fatigue lifetimes has revealed that the adopted multiaxial strain life criteria can successfully estimate the fatigue life of 316 SS grade under uniaxial loading conditions. Furthermore, it has been found that the fatigue life decreases as the surface roughness average value increases, which indicates that surface regularities have a significant impact on low cycle fatigue life. Therefore, the proposed methodology is found to be capable of assessing the impact of surface roughness on the fatigue life of this specific steel in the low cycle fatigue regime.

This paper examines the behavior of stainless-steel-reinforced concrete (SSRC) flexural members subjected to fire. Stainless steel (SS) reinforcement has gained popularity due to its corrosion resistance and long maintenance-free life. However, there is an insufficiency of performance data and design guidance in the present literature. This paper presents a numerical assessment of SSRC structural elements using a material model based on experimental tests. A finite element model was utilized to simulate and analyze the response of SSRC beams under fire. This study compared the behavior of SSRC beams with traditional carbon-steel-reinforced concrete (CSRC) beams, demonstrating that SSRC members have a higher load carrying capacity and can sustain fire exposure for longer durations. During service, notched designed components such as steam generators in the nuclear power plant usually experience fatigue damage at elevated temperatures, due to the repeated cyclic loadings during start-up and shut-down operations. Under such extreme conditions, the durability of these components is highly-affected. Besides, to assess the fatigue life of these components, a reliable determination of the local stress-strain at the notch-tips is needed. In this work, the maximum strains of circumferentially notched cylindrical specimens were calculated using the most commonly known analytical methods, namely Neuber's rule, modified Neuber's rule, Glinka's rule, and linear rule, with notch root radius of 1.25, 2.5, and 5 mm, made of modified 9Cr–1Mo steel at 550 °C, and subjected to nominal stress amplitudes of ±124.95, ±149.95, and ±174.95 MPa. The calculated local strains were compared to those obtained from Finite Element Analysis (FEA). It was found that all the analytical approximations provided unreliable local strains at the notch-tips, resulting in an overestimation or underestimation of the fatigue life. Therefore, a mathematical model that predicts the fatigue lives for 9Cr–1Mo steel at elevated temperature was proposed in terms of the applied stress amplitude and the fatigue stress concentration factor. The calculated fatigue lifetimes using the proposed model are found to be in good agreement with those obtained experimentally from the literature with relative errors, when the applied stress amplitude is ±149.95 MPa, are of 1.97%,–8.67%, and 13.54%, for notch root radii of 1.25, 2.5, and 5 mm, respectively.
