Abstract

International audience; The possibility of enhancing the extracted negative ion (H-/D-) current due to plasma-surfaceinteractions on selected materials (potential alternatives of Cs in NBI for tokamak), is hereindemonstrated. Current results, from plasmas sustained at a few mTorr by ECR dipolar plasmasources, as obtained with laser photodetachment at 1064 nm, demonstrate that, when tungstenmaterial faces plasma it induces an obvious enhancement of the negative ion density. Anextracting system using magnetic cores and three cooled electrodes are used to evaluate effects ofthe material itself and its relative position in the plasma, on the extracted current. The influence ofthe dimensions and geometry of the extracting aperture on the beam intensity, are also studied.

9. Detection of rovibrationally excited molecular hydrogen in the electronic ground state via synchrotron radiation

Abstract

We describe an original setup named SCHEME (Source of exCited HydrogEn MolEcules) designed to study the recombinative desorption mechanisms of H atoms on a surface by means of high-brilliance monochromatic synchrotron radiation (SR). H atoms are produced on electrically heated filaments under vacuum (in the absence of any discharge) and subsequently recombine on a surface to produce excited hydrogen molecules, namely, H2(v″, J″). Once these levels are produced, they are probed in the vacuum chamber with 5-40 eV (248-31 nm) SR-photons. A preliminary test with Krypton has demonstrated the feasibility of SCHEME to obtain simultaneously VUV-synchrotron radiation induced fluorescence and VUV-absorption signals with room-temperature gas. In order to evaluate the hydrogen molecule dissociation induced by the heated filaments, the absolute density of H atoms has been measured by VUV-absorption. At 1800 K and 100 mTorr, we estimated a dissociation degree of 10-4, which corresponds to an absolute density of 1.8×1017 m-3. VUV-absorption spectroscopy is shown to be a valuable tool to detect H2(v″, J″) molecules up to v″ = 3. Possible improvements of the experimental setup, to detect higher v″ levels, are suggested in the end of this paper.

Abstract

International audience; Method of emission spectroscopy was used to study the plasmacharacteristics of the dipolar plasma source [1] in hydrogen at pressures 0.001 –0.01 Torr, microwave power 200-1200 W, microwave frequency 2.45 GHz.Spectral composition of plasma emission was investigated in the range of wavelength 601–627 nm. Functions of distributions over rotational (J=1–5) andvibrational (v=0–2) levels were determined for excited state d3П-u of hydrogenmolecules. Gas temperature Tg, rotational Trot(d3П-u) and vibrational Tv(X1+g)temperatures were determined on the basis of collisional-radiative models [2-4].It was found that the distribution function for the lower rotational levels ofH2(d3П-u) is Boltzmann distribution. Temperature Trot(d3П-u) changes in the range205–325 K. The distribution function for the lower vibrational levels of H2 in theexcited state d3П-u differs from the Boltzmann distribution. The magnitude of thevibrational temperature is 3100400 K, translational temperature is in the range420-650 K. The obtained values of Tg and Tv(X1+g) suggests that thedischarge at low pressures in hydrogen is an effective source of vibrationallyexcited hydrogen molecules.This study was supported in part by RFBR grant # 15-08-00070.

Abstract

International audience; The properties of corona discharge were study by electro-physical and spectral methods in the supercritical phase at 6 K and 11 K as well as in normal liquid helium at 4.2K within the pressure range of 0.1-10 MPa. The electro-physical investigations (measurement of corona current as a function of the applied voltage) gave information about the mobility of charged particles in the medium. The observed corona current is very small, less than 10-7 A. The measured current-voltage characteristics allow for the calculation of the charged particle mobilities (i.e., electrons for negative corona and positive ions for positive corona). The observed charge mobilities decrease as a function of external pressure in both supercritical and liquid phases of helium. The light emitted from the ionization zone was analyzed and assigned to atomic and molecular lines. Distortion of the spectral lines due to the dense helium environment was analyzed. The observed P and R branch rotational line shifts of He2* are markedly different from the previous theoretical predictions. The observed atomic line shifts and widths depend strongly on the applied pressure in both the supercritical and the liquid phases, which can be understood in terms of a bubble formation around the emitters.

Abstract

The liquid ⁴He at fixed temperature 4.2 K and different pressures up to 8 MPa was excited by corona discharge of both negative and positive polarity. Emission of He I atomic lines and He₂ molecular bands are observed. In negative corona the lines spectra show a distinct blue-shift and line-broadening, which becomes stronger with the pressure increasing. The rotational structure of molecular bands is resolved at pressures (0.1–0.2) MPa. The blue shift of the Q-branch maximum at different pressures was observed. Rotational temperature of 900 K has been estimated for the d³Σ⁺u-b³Πg molecular band. A positive corona was realized on a point anode for fewer radii of the electrode and larger voltage than in the negative corona. Electric currents in both negative and positive corona differ weakly. Spectral analysis of the radiation from the positive corona shows qualitative differences of spectral features of these discharges. The spectra observed in the positive corona have marked nonsymmetric shape. The asymmetric atomic and molecular spectra show an increased intensity of their long-length (red) wings.

Abstract

An investigation was made of the capabilities of a two-wavelength CARS thermometry method based on determination of the integral intensities of rotational lines resulting from the S(1) and S(3) Raman transitions in the hydrogen molecule. The gas temperatures were measured in a heated cell and in a hydrogen–air burner at atmospheric pressure. An analysis was made of the factors governing the precision of temperature measurements in a time equal to the duration of one laser pulse (≈10 ns). The relative standard deviation ΣT of the temperatures in a heated cell, measured with the aid of 300 laser pulses, was 1.5% at T=296 K and 8% at T=1000 K; for the measurements on the burner this deviation was 11% at ≈1400 K.
