However, the rheological properties particularly the yield stress of mud would be better parameters for defining a criterion for nautical bottom due to their strong correlation with the flow properties of mud and navigability. The density-yield stress correlation depends significantly on different parameters of mud such as organic matter type and content, clay type and content, particle size distribution and salinity. Therefore, a single critical value of density cannot be chosen for the nautical bottom criterion in a port like Port of Hamburg, where the above mentioned parameters are varying from one harbour location to another. Rapid industrial development, vehicles, domestic activities and mishandling of garbage are the main sources of pollutants, which are destroying the atmosphere. There is a need to continuously monitor these pollutants for the safety of the environment and human beings. Conventional instruments for monitoring of toxic gases are expensive, bigger in size and time-consuming. Hybrid materials containing organic and inorganic components are considered potential candidates for diverse applications, including gas sensing. Gas sensors convert the information regarding the analyte into signals. Various polymeric/inorganic nanohybrids have been used for the sensing of toxic gases. Composites of different polymeric materials like polyaniline (PANI), poly (4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS), poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT), etc. with various metal/metal oxide nanoparticles have been reported as sensing materials for gas sensors because of their unique redox features, conductivity and facile operation at room temperature. Polymeric nanohybrids showed better performance because of the larger surface area of nanohybrids and the synergistic effect between polymeric and inorganic materials. This review article focuses on the recent developments of emerging polymeric/inorganic nanohybrids for sensing various toxic gases including ammonia, hydrogen, nitrogen dioxide, carbon oxides and liquefied petroleum gas. In this study, nickel oxide–Y2O3-doped ZrO2 (NiO-YSZ) composite powder as an anode material was synthesized using a cost-effective combustion method for high-temperature solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). Further, the effects of sintering temperatures (1200, 1300, and 1400 °C) were studied for its properties in relation to the SOFC performance. The prepared and sintered NiO-YSZ materials were characterized for their surface morphology, composition, structure, and conductivity. The cubic crystalline nature of NiO and YSZ was sufficed by X-ray diffraction, and SEM images revealed an increase in the densification of microstructure by an increase in the sintering temperature. EDX spectrum confirmed the presence of nickel, yttrium, and zirconia without any impurity. Conductivity measurements, under a hydrogen environment, revealed that NiO-YSZ, sintered at 1400 °C, exhibits better conductivity compared to the samples sintered at lower temperatures. Electrochemical performance of button-cells was also evaluated and peak power density of 0.62 Wcm−2 is observed at 800 °C. The citrate combustion method provided peak performance for cells containing anode sintered at 1200 °C, which was previously reported at higher sintering temperatures. The genus Mimosa belongs to the Fabaceae family and comprises almost 400 species of herbs, shrubs and ornamental trees. The genus Mimosa is found all over the tropics and subtropics of Asia, Africa, South America, North America and Australia. Traditionally, this genus has been popular for the treatment of jaundice, diarrhea, fever, toothache, wound healing, asthma, leprosy, vaginal and urinary complaints, skin diseases, piles, gastrointestinal disorders, small pox, hepatitis, tumor, HIV, ulcers and ringworm. The review covered literature available from 1959 to 2020 collected from books, scientific journals and electronic searches, such as Science Direct, Web of Science and Google scholar. Various keywords, such as Mimosa, secondary metabolites, medicines, phytochemicals and pharmacological values, were used for the data search. The Mimosa species are acknowledged to be an essential source of secondary metabolites with a wide-ranging biological functions, and up until now, 145 compounds have been isolated from this genus. Pharmacological studies showed that isolated compounds possess significant potential, such as antiprotozoal, antimicrobial, antiviral, antioxidant, and antiproliferative as well as cytotoxic activities. Alkaloids, chalcones, flavonoids, indoles, terpenes, terpenoids, saponins, steroids, amino acids, glycosides, flavanols, phenols, lignoids, polysaccharides, lignins, salts and fatty esters have been isolated from this genus. This review focused on the medicinal aspects of the Mimosa species and may provide a comprehensive understanding of the prospective of this genus as a foundation of medicine, supplement and nourishment. Purpose The presence of organic matter in cohesive sediment results in the formation of clay-organic flocs, which eventually impart complex rheological behavior including shear-thinning, viscoelasticity, thixotropy and two-step yielding to mud. In this study, the influence of microbial degradation of sediment organic matter on the rheological properties of mud samples, having similar densities, was examined. Materials and methods Mud samples were collected from three different locations in the Port of Hamburg, Germany, displaying varying organic matter content. The rheological analysis of fresh and degraded mud samples was performed with the help of several tests including stress ramp-up tests, amplitude sweep tests, frequency sweep tests, time-dependent tests, and structural recovery tests. Results and discussion The results showed a significant decrease in rheological properties including yield stresses, complex modulus, etc. for degraded mud samples as compared to the fresh mud samples. The slopes of the line, correlating the change (degraded − fresh) in the above-mentioned rheological properties as a function of the same rheological property of the fresh mud, varied within the range of −0.28 to −0.49. The structural recovery tests displayed a better recovery (i.e., stronger system) in mud after the pre-shearing step for the degraded mud samples as compared to the fresh mud samples. The effect of degradation time on the rheological properties of mud samples showed two critical time periods (3 days and 150 days) after which a significant change in rheological properties of mud samples was observed. Purpose Sediment organic matter (SOM) influences settling and thus the rheological behavior of suspended particles by enhancing flocculation or reducing surface charges by forming organo-mineral complexes that facilitate particle–particle interactions in consolidating sediments. It was, therefore, assumed that the microbial degradation of SOM and its spatio-temporal variability would affect sediment rheological properties and enhance port maintenance dredging and navigability of ports and waterways. Methods To investigate this effect, samples were taken at six locations along a transect of 30 river kilometers through the Port of Hamburg, Germany, during nine sampling campaigns within two years. The collected samples were divided into different layers based on the differences in visual consistency and strength. For analysis of SOM degradability, the samples were incubated in the laboratory for 250 days in glass bottles under aerobic and anaerobic conditions following the evolution of gas composition (CH4, CO2) and pressure in the bottle headspace over time. Yield stress was analyzed before and after the dissolved organic matter (DOM) decay using a rheometer with Couette geometry. Standard properties of solids and pore water were also analyzed. Results Shear strength decreased upon SOM decay under both anaerobic and aerobic conditions. Under anaerobic conditions, organic matter decay reduced static and fluidic yield stresses to an average of 74% and 79% of the fresh sample values. Consolidated layers at lower depths showed the highest absolute decrease in fluidic yield stress of up to –110 Pa due to a larger absolute amount of degradable organic matter in these layers in connection to higher bulk density. Pronounced spatial trends with higher changes in yield stress at upstream locations and lower yield stress changes at downstream locations coincided with a decreasing gradient of SOM degradability from upstream to downstream. The presence of clay-organic flocs in cohesive mud results in a complex rheological behavior of mud, including viscoelasticity, shear-thinning, thixotropy and two-step yielding. In this study, the effect of microbial degradation of organic matter on the rheological properties of mud samples, collected from different ports, was examined. The mud samples were collected from five different European ports (Port of Antwerp (PoA), Port of Bremerhaven (PoB), Port of Emden (PoE), Port of Hamburg (PoH) and Port of Rotterdam (PoR)), displaying varying sediment properties. The rheological analysis of fresh and degraded mud samples was performed with the help of several tests, including stress ramp-up tests, amplitude sweep tests, frequency sweep tests, time-dependent tests and structural recovery tests. The results showed: (i) a significant decrease in yield stresses and complex modulus after organic matter degradation for mud samples from PoA, PoH and PoR, (ii) a negligible change in rheological properties (yield stresses, crossover amplitude and complex modulus) for mud samples from PoB, and (iii) a significant increase in rheological properties for mud samples from PoE. For time-dependent tests, mud samples from PoB showed a substantial increase in hysteresis (~50% mean value) as compared to the changes in yield stresses and crossover amplitude. Revolution in industrial and agriculture sectors along with a huge increase in human population has brought more amount of wastes like heavy metals, pesticides and antibiotics. These toxins are very harmful for human health, therefore, it is necessary to sense their presence in environment. Conventional strategies face various problems in detection and quantification of these pollutants such as expensive equipment and requirement of high maintenance with limited portability. Recently, nanostructured devices have been developed to detect environmental pollutants. Polymeric nanocomposites have been found robust, cost effective, highly efficient and accurate for sensing various environmental pollutants and this is due to their porous framework, multi-functionalities, redox properties, great conductivity, catalytic features, facile operation at room temperature and large surface area. Synergistic effects between polymeric matrix and nanomaterials are responsible for improved sensing features and environmental adaptability. Organic–inorganic nanohybrids-based polymer nanocomposites are made up of two different components, and these hybrids attained great attention over last decades due to their diversified framework and fascinating features. Different synthetic routes are used to synthesize these materials with enhanced morphology, tunable features, and fine nanostructures. This chapter focuses on various synthetic routes for fabrication of organic–inorganic-based nanopolymeric composites. In some ports and waterways, hindered (delayed) settling of mud suspended in the water phase can be detected. Hindered settling phenomena are typically linked to a combination of sediment properties, suspended sediment concentration or density, hydrodynamic conditions, presence or absence of organic bridging between mud particles and the properties of the water phase such as salinity. Hindered settling may be desired or undesired for maintenance of the nautical depth - it might be beneficial if the properties meet the nautical bottom criteria for safe navigation and maneuvering; however, in case fast settlement and consolidation is necessary for efficient dredging, hindered settling is disadvantageous. Yield stress of mud has been extensively studied for the nautical bottom and port maintenance purposes over the last years. New rheological protocols have been developed for measuring rheological characteristics of mud deposits and analysing the structural recovery of mud. Additional knowledge has been gained from studying the role of density and organic matter and further comparison to the yield stresses measured in the laboratory and in the field. This work connects the knowledge of settling phenomena and rheology. Settling and rheological behaviour of mud from different European ports has been extensively studied. Maintenance of the nautical depth in the seaport of Emden, Germany, is achieved by re-circulation of fluid mud using a trailing suction hopper dredger. Continued re-circulation has proven to maintain low settling rates and to keep yield stresses of re-circulated fluid mud below 50-100 Pa, in combination with densities of 1.15- 1.2 t/m³ enabling safe navigation through these layers. It is assumed that low-density extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), produced by a highly adapted microbial community, are responsible for the desired effect of keeping fine-grained sediment in suspension and that the regular contact with the oxygenated water phase during recirculation dredging supports thriving of this community. Climate change models have indicated increased future discharge of fresh water from the hinterland into the saline port of Emden. It is hypothesized that increased freshwater discharge alters the composition and activity of the microbial community and hence changes the prerequisites for maintaining the currently favourable properties of fluid mud. In this paper we evaluate this hypothesis by elucidating the main factors governing the success of the current practice of re-circulation dredging in the Port of Emden by means of field and laboratory investigations. Initial results obtained in this ongoing research suggest that the low yield stresses of fluid mud in the Port of Emden are not the result of a specialized microbial community producing high concentrations of EPS, but can be solely attributed to a reduction in density as achieved by re-circulation dredging. Kaolin based suspensions have wide range of applications such as slurry wall, drilling fluids, adhesives, cosmetics, refractories and pharmaceuticals, due to their abundance in nature, low cost and non-swelling nature. On the other hand, the unique properties (i.e., biodegradability) of biopolymers make them suitable candidate for variety of applications including modification of clay suspensions. In this study, the rheological properties of kaolin suspensions modified with different biopolymers (xanthan gum (XG), sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), potato starch (PS), chitosan (Ch) and apple fibre (AF)) have been investigated by varying the biopolymer type, content and clay content. The main objective of the present study is to propose a substitute for the natural mud sample. Frequency sweep tests, stress ramp-up tests and time-dependent tests were performed by using the Couette geometry (coaxial cylinders) for the prepared suspensions. The rheological results showed that both viscosity and moduli were significantly influenced by adding different biopolymers into the kaolin suspensions. For instance, an increase in viscosity of modified suspensions was observed: 3 – 4 orders of magnitude by adding xanthan gum (1 wt%) or sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (5 wt%) and 6 orders of magnitude by adding apple fibre (5 wt%). Likewise, the incorporation of different biopolymers significantly affected the complex modulus of modified clay suspensions. For example, similar or higher values of complex modulus than the pure kaolin suspension were observed at low xanthan gum or sodium carboxymethyl cellulose content (0.1 wt%). In case of chitosan, the complex modulus of the modified suspensions was higher than the complex modulus of pure kaolin suspension, even at very low polymer content (1 wt%). Under anaerobic conditions, organic matter decay reduced static and fluidic yield stresses to an average of 74% and 79% of the fresh sample values. Consolidated layers at lower depths showed the highest absolute decrease in fluidic yield stress of up to –110 Pa due to a larger absolute amount of degradable organic matter in these layers in connection to higher bulk density. Hybrid materials containing organic and inorganic components are considered potential candidates for diverse applications, including gas sensing. Gas sensors convert the information regarding the analyte into signals. Various polymeric/inorganic nanohybrids have been used for the sensing of toxic gases. Composites of different polymeric materials like polyaniline (PANI), poly (4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS), poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT), etc. with various metal/metal oxide nanoparticles have been reported as sensing materials for gas sensors because of their unique redox features, conductivity and facile operation at room temperature. Polymeric nanohybrids showed better performance because of the larger surface area of nanohybrids and the synergistic effect between polymeric and inorganic materials. The genus Mimosa belongs to the Fabaceae family and comprises almost 400 species of herbs, shrubs and ornamental trees. The genus Mimosa is found all over the tropics and subtropics of Asia, Africa, South America, North America and Australia. Traditionally, this genus has been popular for the treatment of jaundice, diarrhea, fever, toothache, wound healing, asthma, leprosy, vaginal and urinary complaints, skin diseases, piles, gastrointestinal disorders, small pox, hepatitis, tumor, HIV, ulcers and ringworm. The review covered literature available from 1959 to 2020 collected from books, scientific journals and electronic searches, such as Science Direct, Web of Science and Google scholar. Various keywords, such as Mimosa, secondary metabolites, medicines, phytochemicals and pharmacological values, were used for the data search. The Mimosa species are acknowledged to be an essential source of secondary metabolites with a wide-ranging biological functions, and up until now, 145 compounds have been isolated from this genus. Pharmacological studies showed that isolated compounds possess significant potential, such as antiprotozoal, antimicrobial, antiviral, antioxidant, and antiproliferative as well as cytotoxic activities. Alkaloids, chalcones, flavonoids, indoles, terpenes, terpenoids, saponins, steroids, amino acids, glycosides, flavanols, phenols, lignoids, polysaccharides, lignins, salts and fatty esters have been isolated from this genus. This review focused on the medicinal aspects of the Mimosa species and may provide a comprehensive understanding of the prospective of this genus as a foundation of medicine, supplement and nourishment. The velocities of the seismic waves propagating in the fluid-mud layer are governed by the rheological properties and density of the fluid mud. Performing seismic transmission measurements inside the fluid mud can give good estimates of the seismic velocities and, thus, of the rheological properties and density. Laboratory ultrasonic transmission measurements of the wave velocities in the fluid-mud layer and their temporal evolution are shown. It is found that the shear-wave velocity and yield stress are positively correlated. Performing a seismic reflection survey for characterization of the fluid-mud layers could be more practical because it allows towing the sources and receivers above the top of fluid-mud layer. Interpretation of the results from a reflection survey, though, is influenced by the water layer above the fluid mud. Applying seismic interferometry to reflection measurements can eliminate the influence of the water layer and retrieve a reflection response from inside the fluid-mud layer. This eliminates the influence of the temperature and salinity of the water layer to obtain information about the seismic properties of the fluid-mud layer. To introduce the approach of retrieving and extracting the reflection response from inside the fluid-mud layer, data from laboratory measurements are used. Due to the importance of water for human survival and scarcity of freshwater resources, wastewater treatment has become very important recently. Some persistent pollutants, such as pesticides, are not removed even after multiple conventional wastewater treatment techniques. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are one of the novel techniques that can be used to treat these persistent compounds. Photocatalytic ozonation is a promising AOP that combines photocatalysis and ozonation for synergistic effects and faster degradation of persistent pollutants. However, usually, only a photocatalyst is used while combining photocatalysis and ozonation. In this work, both a photocatalyst and ozonation catalyst have been simultaneously used for the degradation of commercially available CONFIDOR® pesticide, a Bayer product with Imidacloprid as the active ingredient. TiO2 is employed as a photocatalyst, and Fe-coated Zeolite is employed as an ozonation catalyst. The results show that the reaction rate increases by 1.4 times if both catalysts are used as compared to the use of one photocatalyst only. Almost complete removal (>99%) of pollutant is achieved after 20 min with the simultaneous use of a catalyst when imidacloprid with an initial concentration of 100 mg/L is subjected to 250 W/m2 UV of a wavelength of 253.7 nm and 100 mg/h ozone, where it takes 30 min if only one photocatalyst is used. The thermal kinetic modeling is crucial for development of sustainable processes where lignocellulosic fuels are a part of chemical system and their thermal degradation eventuates. In this paper, thermal decomposition of three lignocellulosic materials (bagasse, rice husk, and wheat straw) was obtained by the thermogravimetric (TG) technique and kinetics was analyzed by both model-fitting and isoconversional (model-free) methods to compare their effectiveness. Two models selected from each class include Arrhenius and Coats–Redfern (model-fitting), and Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose (KAS) and Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO) (model-free). The formal model-fitting approach simulating the thermal decomposition of solids by assuming a fixed mechanism was found to be unduly facile. However, activation energy (E) values calculated from two model-fitting techniques were considerably different from each other with a percentage difference in the range of 1.36% to 7.65%. Particularly, both model-fitting methods predicted different reaction mechanism for thermal disintegration of lignocellulosic materials (two-dimensional diffusion (D2) by Arrhenius and one-dimensional diffusion (D1) by Coat–Redfern method). Conversely, the model-free routine offers a transformation of mechanism and activation energy values throughout reaction and is, therefore, more authentic to illustrate the complexity of thermal disintegration of lignocellulosic particles. Based on the model-free kinetic analysis, the lignocellulosic materials may be devised in following order of activation energy: rice husk > bagasse > wheat straw, by both KAS and FWO methods with a percentage difference no more than 0.84% for fractional conversion up to 0.7. Kaolinite suspensions are known to have quite fast settling behaviour and Newtonian character, particularly at low concentrations, due to the non-swelling nature of their constitutive particles. On the other hand, bentonite is known for its swelling and interacting nature, which leads to the formation of a network structure, even at low concentrations. Therefore, both these clays are known to have significantly different rheological fingerprint. In this study, the yielding transitions in mixed kaolinite/bentonite suspensions have been investigated by varying the kaolinite/bentonite ratio and the total solid content. The detailed rheological analysis of these suspensions was carried out using amplitude sweep tests, frequency sweep tests, stress ramp-up tests and structural recovery tests. The results showed that the kaolinite suspensions exhibited a two-step yielding behaviour in stress and amplitude sweep tests at higher solid content (≥ 35 wt%). On the other hand, the bentonite suspensions displayed a single-step yielding even at higher concentrations. In mixed kaolinite/bentonite suspensions, a clear transition between a single and two-step yielding behaviour was observed in steady and oscillatory tests as a function of kaolinite/bentonite ratio, for a particular total solid content. The structural recovery experiments showed that for mixed kaolinite/bentonite suspensions at lower total solid content, where two-step yielding was present, the structural recovery was lowest. Furthermore, these results showed that the rheological properties (i.e., moduli) of stable kaolinite/bentonite suspensions were completely recovered to their initial state, even after multiple shearing cycles. Diverse applications of polymeric materials have prompted development of eco-friendly, efficient, and economical materials. These characteristics can be obtained by incorporating appropriate fillers in the polymeric matrix. The objective of this work is to investigate impact of aqueous glycerol (Gly) treated rice husk (RH) on surface mechanical properties of produced biocomposites. RH was treated with aqueous Gly (75 wt%) and compounded with low density polyethylene (LDPE) at different loadings (10, 20, and 30 wt%). The resulting mixture was thermally pressed in molds to fabricate biocomposites. Surface mechanical properties such as elastic modulus, hardness, creep rate, and plasticity of biocomposites reinforced with untreated and treated RH were investigated using nanoindenter. Experimental values depicted that hardness (H) and elastic modulus (Es) of treated biocomposites were higher than untreated ones. Treated biocomposites showed the noticeable improvement in elastic modulus by 24 and 37% compared to untreated biocomposites at 20 wt% loading and neat LDPE, respectively. Reductions in the creep rate by 20 and 14% were observed for untreated and treated biocomposites, respectively, in comparison to the neat LDPE. H/E ratio was increased by 23 and 18% for treated and untreated biocomposites, respectively, as compared to virgin LDPE. Natural fine-grained suspensions usually exhibit a complex rheological fingerprint – in particular a two-step yielding phenomenon – due to the presence of mineral clay particles and organic matter (often found in a flocculated state). These rheological properties may vary considerably from one location to another due to the differences in mud composition (specifically in organic matter content). In this study, the origin of this two-step yielding behaviour for natural suspensions is discussed with the help of different experimental techniques including rheology, particle sizing, rheo-optics, and video microscopy. The samples were collected from different locations in the Port of Hamburg, Germany. A rheological analysis of the samples was performed with amplitude sweep, frequency sweep, stress ramp-up and structural recovery tests. The shear-induced structural changes of mud samples was studied by using a parallel plate shearing device with a microscope. Mineral clay-organic matter flocs were studied using video microscopy to obtain the floc size, floc density and settling velocity of flocs. Higher values of rheological properties such as cross-over stress, yield stress, and moduli were observed for samples having higher organic matter content. These samples also produced the largest floc sizes. Mud, a cohesive material, consists of water, clay minerals, sand, silt and small quantities of organic matter (i.e., biopolymers). Amongst the different mud layers formed by human or natural activities, the fluid mud layer found on top of all the others is quite important from navigational point of view in ports and waterways. Rheological properties of fluid mud layers play an important role in navigation through fluid mud and in fluid mud transport. However, the rheological properties of mud are known to vary as a function of sampling location within a port, sampling depth and sampling location across the globe. Therefore, this variability in rheolog-ical fingerprint of mud requires a detailed and systematic analysis. This chapter presents two different sampling techniques and the measured rheological properties of mud, obtained from laboratory experiments. The six protocols used to measure the yield stresses are detailed and compared. Furthermore, the empirical or semi-empirical models that are commonly used to fit rheological experimental data of such systems are presented. The influence of different factors such as density and organic matter content on the rheological behavior of mud is discussed. Natural mud sediments display complex rheological behaviour like thixotropy, viscoelasticity and yield stress. These rheological characteristics can significantly vary over depth, from one mud layer to another, as each layer can have a different density and composition. Fast and reliable measurements of yield stresses of mud samples are important for maintenance operations in ports and waterways. These protocols, performed in the laboratory, should give a rheological fingerprint which is representative of the in-situ behaviour of the mud. In this article, we show that our recently developed stress ramp-up rheological protocol is a time-efficient and well-grounded protocol to determine the yield stresses of natural mud samples by comparing with other existing well-grounded protocols. In this study, we also refine the stress ramp-up protocol such as to reduce the experimental time for different mud layers based on their densities. The protocol was tested on a large number of mud samples obtained from different locations/depths of the Port of Hamburg, Germany. An empirical model is proposed to fit the two-step yielding behaviour that the mud samples exhibit. The model captures the two-step yielding phenomenon in mud samples quite well, within the density range of 1050–1200 kg. m−3. Glycerol pretreatment is a promising method for the environmentally-friendly transformation of lignocellulosic materials into sustainable cellulose-rich raw materials (i.e., biopolymer) to fabricate biocomposites. Here, a comparison of aqueous acidified glycerol (AAG) pretreatment of wheat straw (WS) with alkaline, hot water, and dilute acid pretreatments on the thermal and mechanical characteristics of their fabricated composite board is presented. A comparison of total energy expenditure during WS pretreatment with AAG and other solutions was estimated and a comparative influence of AAG processing on lignocellulosic constituents and thermal stability of WS fiber was studied. Results imply that AAG pretreatment was superior in generating cellulose- rich fiber (CRF) as compared to other pretreatments and enhanced the cellulose contents by 90% compared to raw WS fiber. Flexural strength of acidic (40.50 MPa) and hot water treated WS composite (38.71 MPa) was higher compared to the value of 33.57 MPa for untreated composite, but AAG-treated composites exhibited lower values of flexural strength (22.22 MPa) compared to untreated composite samples. Conversely, AAG pretreatment consumed about 56% lesser energy for each kg of WS processed as compared to other pretreatments. These findings recognize that glycerol pretreatment could be a clean and new pretreatment strategy to convert agricultural waste into high-quality CRF as a sustainable raw material source for engineered biocomposite panels., Rivers, Ports, Waterways and Dredging Engineering

Background: Polymeric gels, an important class of soft matter systems, are widely used for commercial applications particularly in food products (i.e., saturated fat replacement). The efficiency of the product for a particular application can be directly linked to its rheological signature. However, the rheological imprint of these structured systems is significantly dependent on the interactions between their individual components. Therefore, the rational understanding of interacting components, their structural arrangements and the resultant characteristics of a hybrid system is vital, in order to speed-up our progress in recognizing the suitable combination of gelling agents and also to tune the technological and functional properties of final product. Scope and approach: The main aim of this narrative review article is to look at the synergistic interactions (i.e., interpenetrating polymer structures) between different components of the hybrid systems (i.e., multi-component organogels or bigels), in order to unveil the resultant rheological characteristics for different commercial applications including food systems. However, multi-component hydrogel systems have not been discussed in this review. Key findings and conclusions: The existence of synergistic interactions between different gelators in multi-component organogels (i.e., higher values of hardness and moduli (G'and G'') of multi-component organogel than the corresponding mono-component system) is clearly evident from the literature. This synergy also helps in optimizing the rheological signature of final system by exploiting the concept of formulation engineering. However, this exciting concept of synergistic enhancement in properties has not yet been explored in the field of bigels. Mud, a cohesive material, consists of water, clay minerals, sand, silt and small quantities of organic matter (i.e., biopolymers). Amongst the different mud layers formed by human or natural activities, the fluid mud layer found on top of all the others is quite important from navigational point of view in ports and waterways. Rheological properties of fluid mud layers play an important role in navigation through fluid mud and in fluid mud transport. However, the rheological properties of mud are known to vary as a function of sampling location within a port, sampling depth and sampling location across the globe. Therefore, this variability in rheolog-ical fingerprint of mud requires a detailed and systematic analysis. This chapter presents two different sampling techniques and the measured rheological properties of mud, obtained from laboratory experiments. The six protocols used to measure the yield stresses are detailed and compared. Furthermore, the empirical or semi-empirical models that are commonly used to fit rheological experimental data of such systems are presented. The influence of different factors such as density and organic matter content on the rheological behavior of mud is discussed. Natural mud sediments display complex rheological behaviour like thixotropy, viscoelasticity and yield stress. These rheological characteristics can significantly vary over depth, from one mud layer to another, as each layer can have a different density and composition. Fast and reliable measurements of yield stresses of mud samples are important for maintenance operations in ports and waterways. These protocols, performed in the laboratory, should give a rheological fingerprint which is representative of the in-situ behaviour of the mud. In this article, we show that our recently developed stress ramp-up rheological protocol is a time-efficient and well-grounded protocol to determine the yield stresses of natural mud samples by comparing with other existing well-grounded protocols. In this study, we also refine the stress ramp-up protocol such as to reduce the experimental time for different mud layers based on their densities. The protocol was tested on a large number of mud samples obtained from different locations/depths of the Port of Hamburg, Germany. An empirical model is proposed to fit the two-step yielding behaviour that the mud samples exhibit. The model captures the two-step yielding phenomenon in mud samples quite well, within the density range of 1050–1200 kg. m−3. Natural fine-grained suspensions usually exhibit a complex rheological fingerprint – in particular a two-step yielding phenomenon – due to the presence of mineral clay particles and organic matter (often found in a flocculated state). These rheological properties may vary considerably from one location to another due to the differences in mud composition (specifically in organic matter content). In this study, the origin of this two-step yielding behaviour for natural suspensions is discussed with the help of different experimental techniques including rheology, particle sizing, rheo-optics, and video microscopy. The samples were collected from different locations in the Port of Hamburg, Germany. A rheological analysis of the samples was performed with amplitude sweep, frequency sweep, stress ramp-up and structural recovery tests. The shear-induced structural changes of mud samples was studied by using a parallel plate shearing device with a microscope. Mineral clay-organic matter flocs were studied using video microscopy to obtain the floc size, floc density and settling velocity of flocs. Higher values of rheological properties such as cross-over stress, yield stress, and moduli were observed for samples having higher organic matter content. These samples also produced the largest floc sizes. Glycerol pretreatment is a promising method for the environmentally-friendly transformation of lignocellulosic materials into sustainable cellulose-rich raw materials (i.e., biopolymer) to fabricate biocomposites. Here, a comparison of aqueous acidified glycerol (AAG) pretreatment of wheat straw (WS) with alkaline, hot water, and dilute acid pretreatments on the thermal and mechanical characteristics of their fabricated composite board is presented. A comparison of total energy expenditure during WS pretreatment with AAG and other solutions was estimated and a comparative influence of AAG processing on lignocellulosic constituents and thermal stability of WS fiber was studied. Results imply that AAG pretreatment was superior in generating cellulose- rich fiber (CRF) as compared to other pretreatments and enhanced the cellulose contents by 90% compared to raw WS fiber. Flexural strength of acidic (40.50 MPa) and hot water treated WS composite (38.71 MPa) was higher compared to the value of 33.57 MPa for untreated composite, but AAG-treated composites exhibited lower values of flexural strength (22.22 MPa) compared to untreated composite samples. Conversely, AAG pretreatment consumed about 56% lesser energy for each kg of WS processed as compared to other pretreatments. These findings recognize that glycerol pretreatment could be a clean and new pretreatment strategy to convert agricultural waste into high-quality CRF as a sustainable raw material source for engineered biocomposite panels., Rivers, Ports, Waterways and Dredging Engineering

Background: Polymeric gels, an important class of soft matter systems, are widely used for commercial applications particularly in food products (i.e., saturated fat replacement). The efficiency of the product for a particular application can be directly linked to its rheological signature. However, the rheological imprint of these structured systems is significantly dependent on the interactions between their individual components. Therefore, the rational understanding of interacting components, their structural arrangements and the resultant characteristics of a hybrid system is vital, in order to speed-up our progress in recognizing the suitable combination of gelling agents and also to tune the technological and functional properties of final product. Scope and approach: The main aim of this narrative review article is to look at the synergistic interactions (i.e., interpenetrating polymer structures) between different components of the hybrid systems (i.e., multi-component organogels or bigels), in order to unveil the resultant rheological characteristics for different commercial applications including food systems. However, multi-component hydrogel systems have not been discussed in this review. Key findings and conclusions: The existence of synergistic interactions between different gelators in multi-component organogels (i.e., higher values of hardness and moduli (G'and G'') of multi-component organogel than the corresponding mono-component system) is clearly evident from the literature. This synergy also helps in optimizing the rheological signature of final system by exploiting the concept of formulation engineering. However, this exciting concept of synergistic enhancement in properties has not yet been explored in the field of bigels. The incorporation of colloidal particles in the gelled system resulted in increased stability and higher moduli values, as compared to the gels without particles. Natural mud usually exhibits non-Newtonian rheological behaviors like viscoelasticity, thixotropy and yield stress. The history of each mud sample is also an important factor influencing the rheological behavior, as the state of the clay fabric – for a same composition – is dependent on the shear stresses experienced previously by the sample. Several rheological tests including stress ramp-up, oscillatory frequency sweep and structural recovery tests were performed, in order to analyse the rheological fingerprint of the mud samples collected from two different locations of the Port of Hamburg. The yield stress, storage moduli and structural recovery of mud from the same location was studied as a function of density for two series of samples. One series consisted of samples (“natural samples”) taken in-situ as a function of depth (with increasing density as a function of depth) whereas the other one (“diluted samples”) consisted of samples whereby the density was varied by adding in-situ water to the natural sample having the highest density. Significant differences in rheological characteristics were found between the natural and diluted mud samples, that were attributed to the state/composition of the mud's fabric in each situation but also to the structural rearrangements caused by the preparation of diluted samples., Rivers, Ports, Waterways and Dredging Engineering, Environmental Fluid Mechanics

The characteristics of clayey suspensions, majorly composed of quartz microparticles, in the presence of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes were investigated using different techniques. A wide range of clay concentrations was used, i.e., from 0.07 to 1000 g/L for different experimental techniques, based on the fact that the clay concentration possible to analyze with selected experimental methods was significantly different. The optimum flocculant to clay ratio was defined as the ratio that gives the fastest initial floc growth by static light scattering or fastest initial settling velocity by settling column experiments. In case of anionic polyelectrolyte, it was observed that the optimum flocculant dose depends on the amount of cations present in the system. For suspensions made with demi-water, a lower optimum flocculant dose (<1 mg/g) than for suspensions prepared in tap water (2.28 mg/g) was observed. At these lower salinities, the supernatant remained turbid in all the experiments and was, therefore, not a good measure for optimal anionic based flocculation. The equilibrium floc size at a given shear rate was found to be independent on the shear history of the floc and only dependent on the current applied shear. This was confirmed by both light scattering and rheological analysis. In case of cationic polyelectrolyte, the optimum flocculant ratio (5–6 mg/g) corresponded to the ratio that gives the lowest electrophoretic mobility for each clay concentration and to the ratio that gives the fastest settling velocity for the highest clay concentrations (12–15 g/L), where static light scattering measurements were not possible. All investigation techniques, therefore, proved to be good indicators for predicting the optimum flocculant to clay ratio. For the lowest concentrations (1.75–8.7 g/L) studied by settling column measurements, the optimum flocculant ratio was observed to increase with decreasing clay concentration, for fixed mixing conditions. In this work, the effects of chemical pretreatment and different fiber loadings on mechanical properties of the composites at the sub-micron scale were studied through nanoindentation. The composites were prepared by incorporating choline chloride (ChCl) pretreated rice husk waste (RHW) in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) using melt processing, followed by a thermal press technique. Nanoindentation experiments with quasi continuous stiffness mode (QCSM) were performed on the surface of produced composites with varying content of pretreated RHW (i.e., 10, 15, and 20 wt.%). Elastic modulus, hardness, and creep properties of fabricated composites were measured as a function of contact depth. The results confirmed the appreciable changes in hardness, elastic modulus, and creep rate of the composites. Compliance curves indicated that the composite having 20 wt.% of pretreated RHW loading was harder compared to that of the pure LDPE and other composite samples. The values of elastic modulus and hardness of the composite containing 20 wt.% pretreated RHW were increased by 4.1% and 24% as compared to that of the pure LDPE, respectively. The creep rate of 42.65 nm/s and change in depth of 650.42 nm were also noted for the composite with RHW loading of 20 wt.%, which showed the substantial effect of holding time at an applied peak load of 100 mN.
