Abstract

In 2017, we discovered quaternary i-MAX phases atomically layered solids, where M is an early transition metal, A is an A group element, and X is C—with a (M12/3M21/3)2AC chemistry, where the M1 and M2 atoms are in-plane ordered. Herein, we report the discovery of a class of magnetic i-MAX phases in which bilayers of a quasi-2D magnetic frustrated triangular lattice overlay a Mo honeycomb arrangement and an Al Kagome lattice. The chemistry of this family is (Mo2/3RE1/3)2AlC, and the rare-earth, RE, elements are Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Lu. The magnetic properties were characterized and found to display a plethora of ground states, resulting from an interplay of competing magnetic interactions in the presence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy.

5. Magnetic properties of TbCo(sub3)B(sub2) studied by neutron diffraction, magnetization, and ac-susceptibility measurements

Abstract

Polycrystalline TbCo(sub3)B(sub2) samples have been prepared by arc melting. Neutron-diffraction measurements with the isotope (super11)B showed ferromagnetic structure below 35(2)K. The ordered magnetic moments were in the basal planes and the Tb ordered moment was smaller than its free-ion value. The Co ordered moment was almost zero, and ac-susceptibility and SQUID magnetometer measurements were in agreement with the neutron results.

Abstract

The YCo3B2 compound is studied by polarized neutron powder diffraction in search of magnetic order. It is found that YCo3B2 remains paramagnetic down to 10 K. Neutron powder diffraction study of the induced transition in the Van Vleck paramagnet TbCo3B2 revealed a significant contribution of magnetic diffuse scattering at small angles and near the (100) reflection. Analysis of these results leads to a revised magnetic structure of TbCo3B2, in which the Tb sublattice orders ferromagnetically at 31 K, with no Co ordering. Also, short-range magnetic order of the Tb sublattice, extending into the paramagnetic region, was found. The temperature evolution of this short-range order's correlation length, in the paramagnetic temperatures region, shows a significant anomaly unique to induced transition magnetic ordering. 22. Theoretical Efficiency of a Thermionic Diode

Abstract

A theoretical analysis of the efficiency of a thermionic diode is made in the highly efficient region of very low anode potential (Va<1 volt). Maximum efficiency is calculated as a function of the cathode temperature for optimum values of anode potential. The calculations are performed for different values of usuable power density, anode temperature and emissivity of electrodes.

29. Magnetic structure determination of TbCo2Ni3 using polarized and nonpolarized neutron powder diffraction.

Abstract

The structural (space group P6/mmtn) and magnetic parameters of TbCo2Ni3 are investigated using neutron powder diffraction and polarized neutron powder diffraction at several temperatures below the magnetic transition temperature. It is found that this compound orders ferrimagnetically at 315 K, with ferromagnetic Tb and Co/Ni sublattices. Below 100 K, the magnetic axis is perpendicular to the hexagonal axis. Above 100 K, the magnetic axis reorients slightly towards the hexagonal axis. The magnitudes and orientation of the ordered magnetic moments exhibit complex temperature dependences. The observed magnitude of the ordered Tb magnetic moment at T = 10 K, is found to be 8.1(2) μB, smaller than the free Tb3+ ion. The significance of this property, and its relation to the mechanisms driving the magnetic order in the parent TbCo5 compound, are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
