The rise of the right-wing populist and eurosceptic party, Alternative für Deutschland, in Germany represents a significant shake up of the country’s pro-EU consensus. Spatial models of partisan behaviour predict that mainstream parties are likely to react to eurosceptic challenges by veering towards a more critical european position. A comparison of the politicisation of European integration in party programmes between the 2017 federal elections and those held previously shows that the reverse is true. In the face of a rising eurosceptic challenger, mainstream parties became more pro-European and more explicitly vocal in their support for the EU as the AfD expanded its support in advance of the 2017 election. In short, instead of accommodating to euroscepticism, mainstream parties have opted for an adversarial response. I argue that the europhile fight-back of mainstream parties is likely driven by increases in europhilia amongst mainstream parties’ supporters in the face of the AfD.

As most studies on new party success focus on party entry at the election level or on new party survival, we argue that these studies suffer from selection bias as they do not leverage information on unsuccessful parties. This is understandable, since quality data on unsuccessful parties’ vote shares, party organizations and ideological characteristics are scant. To overcome this limitation, we examine the party-level determinants of new party success in the Netherlands, including all parties that have participated in national parliamentary elections since 1946. To understand the details of the spectra, a series of ab initio calculations based on the multi-configuration Dirac–Fock method have been performed. Theoretical predictions have been compared with the high-resolution spectra measured using a synchrotron radiation source, and suitable agreement between experiment and theory has enabled the identification of fine-structure spectra. The prominent influence of the relaxation and correlation effects on the photoelectron spectra has been analysed according to the detailed calculations.

Like race, gender seems to be an immutable element of our identity, while in both cases natural and socio-cultural determinants interact. ‘Adam and Eve, Hijra, LGBTQs, and the shake-up of gender identities’ explains that in Western societies, gender identities are being renegotiated. It exemplifies the fact that gender roles are subject to social norms, political power conditions, and economic exigencies. Inside (we) and outside (they) perceptions of identity are not always congruent. The present transformation of gender identities is not limited to women’s and men’s definitions of femininity and masculinity, but also involves recognition of LGBTQs who do not fit a two-valued logic of human sexuality. Modifications of established gender relations are likely to induce discrimination.

This paper develops a theory of how disruptive events could reduce racial and gender inequality in organizations. Despite pressure from regulators and advocates, racial and gender inequality in the workplace remains high. I theorize that because such inequality is often reinforced by organizational inertia, disruptive changes that shake up old hierarchies, break down routines, and shift culture could offer an opportunity for racial minority and women workers to advance. I test this theory by examining 37,343 mergers and acquisitions in the United States from 1971 to 2015. Using a difference-in-differences design, I find that although acquisitions lead to occupational reconfigurations that favor higher-skilled workers, they also improve the managerial representation of racial minorities and women and reduce racial and gender segregation in the acquired workplace. These findings suggest that certain radical organizational changes could significantly reduce racial and gender inequality.

ViZDoom is a robust, first-person shooter reinforcement learning environment, characterized by a significant degree of latent state information. In this paper, double-Q learning and prioritized experience replay methods are tested under a certain ViZDoom combat scenario using a competitive deep recurrent Q-network (DRQN) architecture. In addition, an ensembling technique known as snapshot ensembling is employed using a specific annealed learning rate to observe differences in ensembling efficacy under these two methods. Annealed learning rates are important in general to the training of deep neural network models, as they shake up the status-quo and counter a model’s tending towards local optima. While both variants show performance exceeding those of built-in AI agents of the game, the known stabilizing effects of double-Q learning are illustrated, and priority experience replay is again validated in its usefulness by showing immediate results early on in agent development, with the caveat that value overestimation is accelerated in this case. In addition, some unique behaviors are observed to develop for priority experience replay (PER) and double-Q (DDQ) variants, and snapshot ensembling of both PER and DDQ proves a valuable method for improving performance of the ViZDoom Marine.

The single, double, and triple Auger decay processes from the $1{s}^{\ensuremath{-}1}2{p}^{\ensuremath{-}1}np$ shake-up states of Ne have been studied with a multielectron coincidence method. It is revealed that the Rydberg electron promoted in the initial photoionization step generally acts as a spectator both in the single and double Auger decays. The single Auger decay predominantly produces three-hole one-particle final states while leaving the Rydberg electron virtually unchanged. In the cascade double Auger paths, the Rydberg electron is a spectator in the first step of the cascade process but is subsequently released in the second step, leading to the formation of three-hole final states. The direct paths of double Auger decays, which are much weaker than the cascade paths, produce preferably four-hole one-particle states due to the spectator behavior of the Rydberg electron. The distributions of the $\mathrm{N}{\mathrm{e}}^{4+}$ states populated by the triple Auger decays are also presented.

The overall aim of this chapter is to problematize the comtemporary transnantional discourse about learning and pupil-centred learning, which during recent decades have become givens or, perhaps it vcould be said, have become established as dogmas in the conversations, writings and thinking about ourselves, others, education,work and society. The purpose of this approach is to shake up what is to a greater or lesser extent taken for granted at the present. We do this by showing that ideas such as student centredness can be seen in other ways than is the case in contemporary narratives. Theoretically, we draw on Foucault's concepts of genealogy and history of the present. This means that we reflect contemporary conceptions, in this case the ideas of student centredness, in relation to how similar phenomena have been practiced within other narratives about education/training. Empirically we use different types of education texts such as policy documents, investigations, textbooks and scientific reports. We start with contemporary documents from transnational as well as Swedish sources, followed by documents from three different historical periods: (1) the 1940/1950s, (2) the 1970s and (3) the narrative of the French teacher Joseph Jacotot, from the beginning of the nineteenth century about teaching for the intelectual liberation as retold by Jacques Rancière. The genealogical analysis shows that contemporary narrative about learning is neither more nor less pupil or student centred than that of yesteryear. It is rather that this phenomenon is given different meanings within the framework of different historical discourses about education. In the present time, the concepts are given meaning in the context of educational policy work and reforms in an era of transnational governance.

The program has drawn support from many scientists but concerns from others, and from publishers (including AAAS, publisher of Science ). Science looks at which countries9 funders are likely to join and which aren9t, and whether Plan S is poised to shake up scientific publishing or remain a project that applies to only a small fraction of the world9s scientific papers.

This article uses the blunt term fat to shake up readers’ attitudes and to challenge them to think about how their own prejudices about fatness affect their treatment of fat patients. The clinical work presented is a reconsideration of Bion’s work, with a relational emphasis on projective identification and container/contained. It follows what happens in a treatment where both analyst and patient are unable to examine dysregulating feelings related to the size of their bodies and what their bodies conveyed regarding feeding, overeating, and being fat. This article traces the analyst’s own growth and learning, starting from a position of sharing the patient’s fat hatred, through her own integration of previously dissociated fat hatred, the consequent emergence of an impasse and what she learned in its working through. It highlights how the impact of the patient helped her to change, reciprocally enabling the patient’s growth.

Postcolonializing Berlin is an experiment in rethinking (Western) cities from the South. It embraces conceptual innovations from thinkers in African, Latin American and Asian urban studies to complicate the stories we tell about contemporary Berlin. My argument proceeds in four steps. I begin by asking what makes the North–South division in urban studies so problematic, and what needs to happen to shake up those categories. Then I share some of my own trials and errors in looking at Berlin-Neukolln through the lens of ‘the South', before offering an alternative frame, which I call ‘urban fabricating', as a way of inquiring into and perceiving changing urban settings. In the final part, gambling parlours in Berlin-Neukolln move into focus, where different forms of fabrication are at work: the regeneration officials' vision for the future of the neighbourhood, the inspectors' improvisations on the casino law, and the casino owners' ways of muddling through at the edges of the law. Rather than searching for the one new theory to shake up urban studies, fabricating is, I suggest, an unagitated approach to the actual processes through which cities are made.

Lobbying scandals regularly shake up legislations – in Washington, D.C. as well as in Brussels, Berlin or Vienna. This report looks at what the lobbying profession is really about beyond the scandals: a means to provide voice and access to policymakers whose decisions may have a huge impact. After defining lobbying in an academic sense, the report discusses why lobbyists, as middlemen between politics and business or public interests, are needed at all, what it is exactly that they are doing and how their work differs between the United States, the EU and particular national legislations, such as Germany or Vienna. Litigation as a potential complementary tool of lobbying is discussed, as well as the question as to what money can buy in lobbying and the efforts to regulate this business.
