Abstract: We describe updated scientific goals for the wide-field, millimeter-wave survey that will be produced by the Simons Observatory (SO). Significant upgrades to the 6-meter SO Large Aperture Telescope (LAT) are expected to be complete by 2028, and will include a doubled mapping speed with 30,000 new detectors and an automated data reduction pipeline. In addition, a new photovoltaic array will supply most of the observatory's power. The LAT survey will cover about 60% of the sky at a regular observing cadence, with five times the angular resolution and ten times the map depth of Planck. The science goals are to: (1) determine the physical conditions in the early universe and constrain the existence of new light particles; (2) measure the integrated distribution of mass, electron pressure, and electron momentum in the late-time universe, and, in combination with optical surveys, determine the neutrino mass and the effects of dark energy via tomographic measurements of the growth of structure at $z < 3$; (3) measure the distribution of electron density and pressure around galaxy groups and clusters, and calibrate the effects of energy input from galaxy formation on the surrounding environment; (4) produce a sample of more than 30,000 galaxy clusters, and more than 100,000 extragalactic millimeter sources, including regularly sampled AGN light-curves, to study these sources and their emission physics; (5) measure the polarized emission from magnetically aligned dust grains in our Galaxy, to study the properties of dust and the role of magnetic fields in star formation; (6) constrain asteroid regoliths, search for Trans-Neptunian Objects, and either detect or eliminate large portions of the phase space in the search for Planet 9; and (7) provide a powerful new window into the transient universe on time scales of minutes to years, concurrent with observations from Rubin of overlapping sky., Comment: 44 pages, 7 figures; abstract slightly abridged. 2. An Optimized YOLOv5 Based Approach For Real-time Vehicle Detection At Road Intersections Using Fisheye Cameras

Abstract: Real time vehicle detection is a challenging task for urban traffic surveillance. Increase in urbanization leads to increase in accidents and traffic congestion in junction areas resulting in delayed travel time. In order to solve these problems, an intelligent system utilizing automatic detection and tracking system is significant. But this becomes a challenging task at road intersection areas which require a wide range of field view. For this reason, fish eye cameras are widely used in real time vehicle detection purpose to provide large area coverage and 360 degree view at junctions. However, it introduces challenges such as light glare from vehicles and street lights, shadow, non-linear distortion, scaling issues of vehicles and proper localization of small vehicles. To overcome each of these challenges, a modified YOLOv5 object detection scheme is proposed. YOLOv5 is a deep learning oriented convolutional neural network (CNN) based object detection method. The proposed scheme for detecting vehicles in fish-eye images consists of a light-weight day-night CNN classifier so that two different solutions can be implemented to address the day-night detection issues. Furthurmore, challenging instances are upsampled in the dataset for proper localization of vehicles and later on the detection model is ensembled and trained in different combination of vehicle datasets for better generalization, detection and accuracy. For testing, a real world fisheye dataset provided by the Video and Image Processing (VIP) Cup organizer ISSD has been used which includes images from video clips of different fisheye cameras at junction of different cities during day and night time. Experimental results show that our proposed model has outperformed the YOLOv5 model on the dataset by 13.7% mAP @ 0.5.

3. Fractons from covariant higher-rank 3D BF theory

Abstract: In this paper we study the 3D gauge theory of two tensor gauge fields: $a_{\mu\nu}(x)$, which we take symmetric, and $B_{\mu\nu}(x)$, with no symmetry on its indices. The corresponding invariant action is a higher-rank BF-like model, which is first considered from a purely field theoretical point of view, and the propagators with their poles and the degrees of freedom are studied. Once matter is introduced, a fracton behaviour naturally emerges. We show that our theory can be mapped to the low-energy effective field theory describing the Rank-2 Toric Code (R2TC). This relation between our covariant BF-like theory and the R2TC is a higher-rank generalization of the equivalence between the ordinary 3D BF theory and the Kitaev's Toric Code. In the last part of the paper we analyze the case in which the field $B_{\mu\nu}(x)$ is a symmetric tensor. It turns out that the obtained BF-like action can be cast into the sum of two rank-2 Chern-Simons actions, thus generalizing the ordinary abelian case. Therefore, this represents a higher-rank generalization of the ordinary 3D BF theory, which well describes the low-energy physics of quantum spin Hall insulators in two spatial dimensions., Comment: 36 pages, no figures

4. Threat-Specific Risk Assessment for IP Multimedia Subsystem Networks Based on Hierarchical Models

Abstract: Over the years, IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS) networks have become increasingly critical as they form the backbone of modern telecommunications, enabling the integration of multimedia services such as voice, video, and messaging over IP-based infrastructures and next-generation networks. However, this integration has led to an increase in the attack surface of the IMS network, making it more prone to various forms of cyber threats and attacks, including Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, SIP-based attacks, unauthorized access, etc. As a result, it is important to find a way to manage and assess the security of IMS networks, but there is a lack of a systematic approach to managing the identification of vulnerabilities and threats. In this paper, we propose a model and a threat-specific risk security modeling and assessment approach to model and assess the threats of the IMS network. This model will provide a structured methodology for representing and analyzing threats and attack scenarios in layers within a hierarchical model. The proposed model aims to enhance the security posture of IMS networks by improving vulnerability management, risk evaluation, and defense evaluation against cyber threats. We perform a preliminary evaluation based on vulnerability collected from the National Vulnerability Database for devices in the IMS network. The results showed that we can model and assess the threats of IMS networks. 6. On the existence of various generalizations of semisymmetric and pseudosymmetric type manifolds

Abstract: The objective of the paper is to investigate a sequential study of different generalizations of semisymmetric and pseudosymmetric manifolds with their proper existence by several spacetimes. In the literature of differential geometry, there are many generalizations of such notions in various directions by involving different curvature tensors. In this paper, we have systematically and consecutively reviewed various generalized notions of semisymmetry, such as, Ricci semisymmetry, conformal semisymmetry, pseudosymmetry, Ricci pseudosymmetry, Ricci generalized pseudosymmetry, conformal pseudosymmetry, Ricci generalized Weyl pseudosymmetry and also many other semisymmetry type conditions. Most importantly, we have exhibited a plenty of suitable examples to examine the proper existence of such geometric structures, and they are physically significant as several spacetimes admit such geometric structures. By considering an immersion of Schwarzschild black hole metric, we have also provided a new example of Ricci pseudosymmetric manifolds. Finally, the interesting character of Weyl projective curvature tensors of type $(1,3)$ and $(0,4)$ are exhibited with their interesting examples., Comment: 32 pages

7. Inflation and instabilities of a spherical magnetoelastic balloon

Abstract: This study explores the instabilities during the axisymmetric inflation of an initially spherical magnetoelastic balloon, modeled as a magnetizable Ogden material, under combined internal pressure and a non-uniform magnetic field generated by current-carrying coils. The nonlinear interplay of geometric and material effects leads to governing equations sensitive to bifurcations and instabilities. A coordinate singularity at the poles of the balloon is identified within the system of governing differential equations, which is resolved through an appropriate choice of field variables and L'H\^opital's rule. Stability analysis reveals that as inflation progresses, axisymmetry is broken through a supercritical pitchfork bifurcation, resulting in a pear-shaped equilibrium. This symmetry is later restored through a reverse subcritical pitchfork bifurcation, forming an isolated loop of pear-shaped solutions containing stable and unstable branches in the case of a six-parameter Ogden material model (SPOM). The onset of symmetry-breaking bifurcations is influenced by material parameters and magnetic field intensity, with critical values beyond which such bifurcations are suppressed. Both symmetry-preserving and pear-shaped configurations are stable under small asymmetric perturbations in both magnetic and non-magnetic cases. 8. Surrogate modeling of gravitational waves microlensed by spherically symmetric potentials

Abstract: The anticipated observation of the gravitational microlensing of gravitational waves (GWs) promises to shed light on a host of astrophysical and cosmological questions. However, extracting the parameters of the lens from the modulated GWs requires accurate modeling of the lensing amplification factor, accounting for wave-optics effects. Analytic solutions to the lens equation have not been found to date, except for a handful of simplistic lens models. While numerical solutions to this equation have been developed, the time and computational resources required to evaluate the amplification factor numerically make large-scale parameter estimation of the lens (and source) parameters prohibitive. On the other hand, surrogate modeling of GWs has proven to be a powerful tool to accurately, and rapidly, produce GW templates at arbitrary points in parameter space, interpolating from a finite set of available waveforms at discrete parameter values. In this work, we demonstrate that surrogate modeling can also effectively be applied to the evaluation of the time-domain microlensing amplification factor $\widetilde{F}(t)$, for arbitrary lens configurations. We show this by constructing $\widetilde{F}(t)$ for two lens models, viz. point-mass lens, and singular isothermal sphere, which notably includes logarithmic divergence behaviour. We find both surrogates reproduce the original lens models accurately, with mismatches $\lesssim 5 \times 10^{-4}$ across a range of plausible microlensed binary black hole sources observed by the Einstein Telescope. This surrogate is between 5 and $10^3$ times faster than the underlying lensing models, and can be evaluated in about 100 ms. Abstract: Continuous gravitational waves (CWs) emission from neutron stars carries information about their internal structure and equation of state, and it can provide tests of General Relativity. We present a search for CWs from a set of 45 known pulsars in the first part of the fourth LIGO--Virgo--KAGRA observing run, known as O4a. We conducted a targeted search for each pulsar using three independent analysis methods considering the single-harmonic and the dual-harmonic emission models. We find no evidence of a CW signal in O4a data for both models and set upper limits on the signal amplitude and on the ellipticity, which quantifies the asymmetry in the neutron star mass distribution. For the single-harmonic emission model, 29 targets have the upper limit on the amplitude below the theoretical spin-down limit. The lowest upper limit on the amplitude is $6.4\!\times\!10^{-27}$ for the young energetic pulsar J0537-6910, while the lowest constraint on the ellipticity is $8.8\!\times\!10^{-9}$ for the bright nearby millisecond pulsar J0437-4715. Additionally, for a subset of 16 targets we performed a narrowband search that is more robust regarding the emission model, with no evidence of a signal. 10. Data Acquisition Through Participatory Design for Automated Rehabilitation Assessment

Abstract: Through participatory design, we are developing a computational system for the semi-automated assessment of the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT) for stroke rehabilitation. During rehabilitation assessment, clinicians rate movement segments and components in the context of overall task performance. Clinicians change viewing angles to assess particular components. Through studies with clinicians, we develop a system that includes: a) unobtrusive multi-camera capture, b) a segmentation interface for non-expert segmentors, and c) a rating interface for expert clinicians. Five clinicians independently captured 1800 stroke survivor videos with <5$\%$ errors. Three segmentors have segmented 760 of these videos, averaging 20 seconds per segment. They favor the recommended camera view $>$ 90\%. Multiple clinicians have rated the segmented videos while reporting minimal problems. The complete data will be used for training an automated segmentation and rating system that empowers the clinicians as the ratings will be compatible with clinical practice and intuition.

11. Toward a Trauma-Informed Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program: Specifying Feasible Practices across the School Day

Abstract: Background: Many students would benefit from trauma-informed physical activity (PA); however, there is a lack of systematic guidance on incorporating trauma-informed practices across school-based PA opportunities. The purpose of this study was to generate a feasible framework for trauma-informed school-based PA. Methods: Framework development was guided by a modified Delphi approach, including an exploration phase and an evaluation phase. First, a multidisciplinary working group reviewed extant literature, mapping trauma-informed practices onto the domains and components of the Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program (CSPAP). Subsequently, experts (n = 14) provided quantitative feedback on the utility and feasibility of these practices. Results: Thirty-three practices met pre-determined thresholds for utility and feasibility. Across CSPAP domains, this included attending to: (a) safety; (b) positive communication and relationships; (c) empowerment, choice, and voice; (d) emotion management and skill building; (e) instructor competencies and support; and (f) cultural, historical, and gender issues. Implications for School Health Policy, Practice, and Equity: Incorporating trauma-informed practices into existing frameworks and approaches to school-based PA may promote uptake of practices that help meet the social and emotional needs of trauma-exposed youth. Conclusions: The present output provides a foundation for generating tools and supports for incorporating trauma-informed practices into school-based PA promotion efforts.

12. Iterative NLP Query Refinement for Enhancing Domain-Specific Information Retrieval: A Case Study in Career Services

Abstract: Retrieving semantically relevant documents in niche domains poses significant challenges for traditional TF-IDF-based systems, often resulting in low similarity scores and suboptimal retrieval performance. This paper addresses these challenges by introducing an iterative and semi-automated query refinement methodology tailored to Humber College's career services webpages. Initially, generic queries related to interview preparation yield low top-document similarities (approximately 0.2--0.3). To enhance retrieval effectiveness, we implement a two-fold approach: first, domain-aware query refinement by incorporating specialized terms such as resources-online-learning, student-online-services, and career-advising; second, the integration of structured educational descriptors like "online resume and interview improvement tools." Additionally, we automate the extraction of domain-specific keywords from top-ranked documents to suggest relevant terms for query expansion. Through experiments conducted on five baseline queries, our semi-automated iterative refinement process elevates the average top similarity score from approximately 0.18 to 0.42, marking a substantial improvement in retrieval performance. 13. Ultraviolet Completion of a Two-loop Neutrino Mass Model

Abstract: The Zee-Babu model is an economical framework for neutrino mass generation as two-loop quantum corrections. In this work, we present a UV completion of this model by embedding it into an $SU(5)$ unified framework. Interestingly, we find that loop-induced contributions to neutrino masses arising from colored scalars are just as important as those from color-neutral ones. These new states, which are required from gauge coupling unification and neutrino oscillation data to have masses below $\mathcal{O}(10^3)$ TeV, may be accessible to future collider experiments. Additionally, the model can be probed in proton decay searches. Our Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis of model parameters shows a high likelihood of observable $p \rightarrow e^+ \pi^0$ decay signal in the first decade of Hyper-Kamiokande operation. The model predicts a vector-like down-type quark at the TeV scale, utilized for realistic fermion mass generation and gauge coupling unification. 14. Low-cost foil/paper based touch mode pressure sensing element as artificial skin module for prosthetic hand

Abstract: Capacitive pressure sensors have several advantages in areas such as robotics, automation, aerospace, biomedical and consumer electronics. We present mathematical modelling, finite element analysis (FEA), fabrication and experimental characterization of ultra-low cost and paper-based, touch-mode, flexible capacitive pressure sensor element using Do-It-Yourself (DIY) technology. The pressure sensing element is utilized to design large-area electronics skin for low-cost prosthetic hands. The presented sensor is characterized in normal, transition, touch and saturation modes. The sensor has higher sensitivity and linearity in touch mode operation from 10 to 40 kPa of applied pressure compared to the normal (0 to 8 kPa), transition (8 to 10 kPa) and saturation mode (after 40 kPa) with response time of 15.85 ms. Advantages of the presented sensor are higher sensitivity, linear response, less diaphragm area, less von Mises stress at the clamped edges region, low temperature drift, robust structure and less separation gap for large pressure measurement compared to normal mode capacitive pressure sensors. The linear range of pressure change is utilized for controlling the position of a servo motor for precise movement in robotic arm using wireless communication, which can be utilized for designing skin-like structure for low-cost prosthetic hands.

15. Design Multiband Monopole and Microstrip Patch Antennas using High Frequency Structure Simulator

Abstract: This paper describes the design, construction and testing of a dual-band monopole microstrip patch antenna to operate in the GSM and DCS bands. For compactness the monopole antenna is mounted on top of a FR4 substrate and is designed as a planar structure which can be wrapped into a box like structure. The performance characteristics of the wrapped dual band monopole antenna are simulated on Ansoft HFSS before fabrication and testing on a Network Analyzer. The simulated HFSS return loss of the antenna shows broad agreement with experiment over the frequency range from 500MHz to 4GHz. Radiation patterns are generated in each band of operation of the antenna. Abstract: Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are crucial for advancing optical communications, promising substantial gains in data transmission speed, bandwidth, and energy efficiency compared to conventional electronics. Telecom-wavelength photodetectors, operating near 1550 nm, are indispensable in PICs, where they enable the sensitive and low-noise conversion of optical signals to electrical signals for efficient data processing. While silicon is ideal for passive optical components, its limited absorption in the optical telecommunication range (1260-1625 nm) typically necessitates integrating an alternative material, such as germanium, for photodetection - a process that introduces significant fabrication challenges. Here, we present a high-performance, all-silicon photodetector, grating- and waveguide-coupled, which operates at room temperature within the optical telecom C band. By introducing deep-level impurities into silicon at concentrations close to the solid-solubility limit, we enable efficient sub-bandgap absorption without compromising recombination carrier lifetimes and mobilities. This detector achieves a responsivity of 0.56 A/W, a quantum efficiency of 44.8%, a bandwidth of 5.9 GHz, and a noise-equivalent power of 4.2E-10 W/(Hz)1/2 at 1550 nm, fulfilling requirements for telecom applications. Our approach provides a scalable and cost-effective solution for the monolithic integration of telecom-wavelength photodetectors into silicon-based PICs, advancing the development of compact photonic systems for modern communication infrastructures., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: Rapid advancements in Large Language models (LLMs) has significantly enhanced their reasoning capabilities. Despite improved performance on benchmarks, LLMs exhibit notable gaps in their cognitive processes. Additionally, as reflections of human-generated data, these models have the potential to inherit cognitive biases, raising concerns about their reasoning and decision making capabilities. In this paper we present a framework to interpret, understand and provide insights into a host of cognitive biases in LLMs. Conducting our research on frontier language models we're able to elucidate reasoning limitations and biases, and provide reasoning behind these biases by constructing influence graphs that identify phrases and words most responsible for biases manifested in LLMs. We further investigate biases such as round number bias and cognitive bias barrier revealed when noting framing effect in language models.

Abstract: Photonics caught world attention since channel capacity limit of metallic interconnects approached due to research and design in high speed digital processors. Use of dielectrics, instead, suitable for light propagation was more attractive due to its extremely wide bandwidth. Many of the devices, both active and passive, have been demonstrated using these insulating materials. Due to its excellent optical characteristics, established fabrication history, and cheaper throughput, silicon found its place in photonics arena. However, due to its indirect band structure, efficient light sources are not possible using silicon as the base material. Nevertheless, techniques such as stimulated Raman scattering and third-harmonic generation have made it possible to avoid this natural hurdle in the path of silicon as a light source. This paper reviews basic theory of stimulated Raman scattering, its applications in the context of silicon based photonic integrated circuits and describes ways to improve this nonlinear effect. This paper also covers few of the most important demonstrations of stimulated Raman scattering published in literature from the last decade.

19. Optimizing Domain-Specific Image Retrieval: A Benchmark of FAISS and Annoy with Fine-Tuned Features

Abstract: Approximate Nearest Neighbor search is one of the keys to high-scale data retrieval performance in many applications. The work is a bridge between feature extraction and ANN indexing through fine-tuning a ResNet50 model with various ANN methods: FAISS and Annoy. We evaluate the systems with respect to indexing time, memory usage, query time, precision, recall, F1-score, and Recall@5 on a custom image dataset. FAISS's Product Quantization can achieve a precision of 98.40% with low memory usage at 0.24 MB index size, and Annoy is the fastest, with average query times of 0.00015 seconds, at a slight cost to accuracy. These results reveal trade-offs among speed, accuracy, and memory efficiency and offer actionable insights into the optimization of feature-based image retrieval systems. This study will serve as a blueprint for constructing actual retrieval pipelines and be built on fine-tuned deep learning networks and associated ANN methods.

Abstract: Performance optimization associated with optical modulators requires reasonably accurate predictive models for key figures of merit. Interleaved PN-junction topology offers the maximum mode/junction overlap and is the most efficient modulator in depletion-mode of operation. Due to its structure, the accurate modelling process must be fully three-dimensional, which is a nontrivial computational problem. This paper presents a rigorous 3D model for the modulation efficiency of silicon-on-insulator interleaved junction optical phase modulators with submicron dimensions. Solution of Drift-Diffusion and Poisson equations were carried out on 3D finite-element-mesh and Maxwell equations were solved using Finite-Difference-Time-Domain (FDTD) method on 3D Yee-cells. Whole of the modelling process has been detailed and all the coefficients required in the model are presented. Model validation suggests < 10% RMS error.

Abstract: Full-vectorial finite difference method with perfectly matched layers boundaries is used to identify the single mode operation region of submicron rib waveguides fabricated using sili-con-on-insulator material system. Achieving high mode power confinement factors is emphasized while maintaining the single mode operation. As opposed to the case of large cross-section rib waveguides, theoretical single mode conditions have been demonstrated to hold for sub-micron waveguides with accuracy approaching 100%. Both, the deeply and the shallowly etched rib waveguides have been considered and the single mode condition for entire sub-micrometer range is presented while adhering to design specific mode confinement requirements.

Abstract: The majority of atomic nuclei have deformed shapes and nearly all these shapes are symmetric with respect to reflection. There are only a few reflection asymmetric pear-shaped nuclei that have been found in actinide and lanthanide regions, which have static octupole deformation. These nuclei possess an intrinsic electric dipole moment due to the shift between the center of charge and the center of mass. This manifests in the enhancement of the electric dipole transition rates. In this article, we report on the measurement of the lifetimes of the high spin levels of the two alternate parity bands in $^{100}$Ru through the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method. The estimated electric dipole transition rates have been compared with the calculated transition rates using the triaxial projected shell model without octupole deformation, and are found to be an order of magnitude enhanced. Thus, the observation of seven inter-leaved electric dipole transitions with enhanced rates establish $^{100}$Ru as possibly the first octupole deformed nucleus reported in the A $\approx$ 100 mass region.

26. Inference for Treatment Effects Conditional on Generalized Principal Strata using Instrumental Variables

Abstract: In a setting with a multi-valued outcome, treatment and instrument, this paper considers the problem of inference for a general class of treatment effect parameters. The class of parameters considered are those that can be expressed as the expectation of a function of the response type conditional on a generalized principal stratum. Here, the response type simply refers to the vector of potential outcomes and potential treatments, and a generalized principal stratum is a set of possible values for the response type. In addition to instrument exogeneity, the main substantive restriction imposed rules out certain values for the response types in the sense that they are assumed to occur with probability zero. It is shown through a series of examples that this framework includes a wide variety of parameters and assumptions that have been considered in the previous literature. A key result in our analysis is a characterization of the identified set for such parameters under these assumptions in terms of existence of a non-negative solution to linear systems of equations with a special structure. We propose methods for inference exploiting this special structure and recent results in Fang et al. (2023).

27. Investigating the Seebeck effect of the QGP medium using a novel relaxation time approximation model

Abstract: The highly energetic particle medium formed in the ultrarelativistic heavy ion collision displays a notable difference in temperatures between its central and peripheral regions. This temperature gradient can generate an electric field within the medium, a phenomenon referred to as the Seebeck effect. We have estimated the Seebeck coefficient for a dense quark-gluon plasma medium by using the relativistic Boltzmann transport equation in the recently developed novel relaxation time approximation (RTA) model within the kinetic theory framework. This study explores the Seebeck coefficient of individual quark flavors as well as the entire partonic medium, with the emphasis on its dependence on the temperature and the chemical potential. Our observation indicates that, for given current quark masses, the magnitude of the Seebeck coefficient for each quark flavor as well as for the partonic medium decreases as the temperature rises and increases as the chemical potential increases. Furthermore, we have investigated the Seebeck effect by considering the partonic interactions described in perturbative thermal QCD within the quasiparticle model. Abstract: That datasets that are used in todays research are especially vast in the medical field. Different types of medical images such as X-rays, MRI, CT scan etc. take up large amounts of space. This volume of data introduces challenges like accessing and retrieving specific images due to the size of the database. An efficient image retrieval system is essential as the database continues to grow to save time and resources. In this paper, we propose an approach to medical image retrieval using DenseNet for feature extraction and use FAISS for similarity search. DenseNet is well-suited for feature extraction in complex medical images and FAISS enables efficient handling of high-dimensional data in large-scale datasets. Unlike existing methods focused solely on classification accuracy, our method prioritizes both retrieval speed and diagnostic relevance, addressing a critical gap in real-time case comparison for radiologists. We applied the classification of breast cancer images using the BIRADS system. We utilized DenseNet's powerful feature representation and FAISSs efficient indexing capabilities to achieve high precision and recall in retrieving relevant images for diagnosis. We experimented on a dataset of 2006 images from the Categorized Digital Database for Low Energy and Subtracted Contrast Enhanced Spectral Mammography (CDD-CESM) images available on The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA). Our method outperforms conventional retrieval techniques, achieving a precision of 80% at k=5 for BIRADS classification. Abstract: In molecular systems, the ultrafast motion of electrons initiates the process of chemical change. Tracking this electronic motion across molecules requires coupling attosecond time resolution to atomic-scale spatial sensitivity. In this work, we employ a pair of attosecond x-ray pulses from an x-ray free-electron laser to follow electron motion resulting from the sudden removal of an electron from a prototypical aromatic system, para-aminophenol. X-ray absorption enables tracking this motion with atomic-site specificity. Our measurements are compared with state-of-the-art computational modeling, reproducing the observed response across multiple timescales. Sub-femtosecond dynamics are assigned to states undergoing non-radiative decay, while few-femtosecond oscillatory motion is associated with electronic wavepacket motion in stable cation states, that will eventually couple to nuclear motion. Our work provides insight on the ultrafast charge motion preceding and initiating chemical transformations in moderately complex systems, and provides a powerful benchmark for computational models of ultrafast charge motion in matter.

Abstract: This paper develops a control strategy for pursuit-evasion problems in environments with occlusions. We address the challenge of a mobile pursuer keeping a mobile evader within its field of view (FoV) despite line-of-sight obstructions. The signed distance function (SDF) of the FoV is used to formulate visibility as a control barrier function (CBF) constraint on the pursuer's control inputs. Similarly, obstacle avoidance is formulated as a CBF constraint based on the SDF of the obstacle set. While the visibility and safety CBFs are Lipschitz continuous, they are not differentiable everywhere, necessitating the use of generalized gradients. To achieve non-myopic pursuit, we generate reference control trajectories leading to evader visibility using a sampling-based kinodynamic planner. The pursuer then tracks this reference via convex optimization under the CBF constraints. We validate our approach in CARLA simulations and real-world robot experiments, demonstrating successful visibility maintenance using only onboard sensing, even under severe occlusions and dynamic evader movements., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

31. Inference on Multiple Winners with Applications to Microcredit and Economic Mobility

Abstract: While policymakers and researchers are often concerned with conducting inference based on a data-dependent selection, a strictly larger class of inference problems arises when considering multiple data-dependent selections, such as when selecting on statistical significance or quantiles. Given this, we study the problem of conducting inference on multiple selections, which we dub the inference on multiple winners problem. In this setting, we encounter both selective and multiple testing problems, making existing approaches either not applicable or too conservative. Instead, we propose a novel, two-step approach to the inference on multiple winners problem, with the first step modeling the selection of winners, and the second step using this model to conduct inference only on the set of likely winners. Our two-step approach reduces over-coverage error by up to 96%. We apply our two-step approach to revisit the winner's curse in the creating moves to opportunity (CMTO) program, and to study external validity issues in the microcredit literature. In the CMTO application, we find that, after correcting for the inference on multiple winners problem, we fail to reject the possibility of null effects in the majority of census tracts selected by the CMTO program. In our microcredit application, we find that heterogeneity in treatment effect estimates remains largely unaffected even after our proposed inference corrections.

Abstract: Neutrinoless double beta decay {($0\nu\beta\beta$)} provides a way to probe physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. The upcoming nEXO experiment will search for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay in $^{136}$Xe with a projected half-life sensitivity exceeding $10^{28}$ years at the 90\% confidence level using a liquid xenon (LXe) Time Projection Chamber (TPC) filled with 5 tonnes of Xe enriched to $\sim$90\% in the {$\beta \beta$}-decaying isotope $^{136}$Xe. In parallel, a potential future upgrade to nEXO is being investigated with the aim to further suppress radioactive backgrounds and to confirm $\beta \beta$-decay events. This technique, known as Ba-tagging, comprises extracting and identifying the $\beta \beta$-decay daughter $^{136}$Ba ion. One tagging approach being pursued involves extracting a small volume of LXe in the vicinity of a potential $\beta \beta$-decay using a capillary tube and facilitating a liquid-to-gas phase transition by heating the capillary exit. The Ba ion is then separated from the accompanying Xe gas using a radio-frequency (RF) carpet and RF funnel, conclusively identifying the ion as $^{136}$Ba via laser-fluorescence spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Simultaneously, an accelerator-driven Ba ion source is being developed to validate and optimize this technique. Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. Abstract: Digital Twin (DT) technologies promise to remove cyber-physical barriers in systems and services and provide seamless management of distributed resources effectively. Ideally, full-fledged instantiations of DT offer bi-directional features for physical-virtual representations, tackling data governance, risk assessment, security and privacy protections, resilience, and performance, to name a few characteristics. More broadly, Federated Digital Twins (FDT) are distributed physical-virtual counterparts that collaborate for enacting synchronisation and accurate mapping of multiple DT instances. In this work we focus on understanding and conceptualising the cyber-physical and business perspectives using FDT in multinational and multimodal transportation systems. These settings enforce a plethora of regulations, compliance, standards in the physical counterpart that must be carefully considered in the virtual mirroring. Our aim is to discuss the regulatory and technical underpinnings and, consequently, the existing operational and budgetary overheads to factor in when designing or operating FDT.

37. MindFlayer: Efficient Asynchronous Parallel SGD in the Presence of Heterogeneous and Random Worker Compute Times

Abstract: We study the problem of minimizing the expectation of smooth nonconvex functions with the help of several parallel workers whose role is to compute stochastic gradients. In particular, we focus on the challenging situation where the workers' compute times are arbitrarily heterogeneous and random. In the simpler regime characterized by arbitrarily heterogeneous but deterministic compute times, Tyurin and Richt\'arik (NeurIPS 2023) recently designed the first theoretically optimal asynchronous SGD method, called Rennala SGD, in terms of a novel complexity notion called time complexity. The starting point of our work is the observation that Rennala SGD can have arbitrarily bad performance in the presence of random compute times -- a setting it was not designed to handle. To advance our understanding of stochastic optimization in this challenging regime, we propose a new asynchronous SGD method, for which we coin the name MindFlayer SGD. Our theory and empirical results demonstrate the superiority of MindFlayer SGD over existing baselines, including Rennala SGD, in cases when the noise is heavy tailed.

38. Promoting Islamic Education in Brunei Society Following the Implementation of the Shariah Law in 2013

Abstract: The Syariah Penal Code Order, 2013 (SPCO 2013) has formally become the law of Brunei Darussalam, with its first phase of implementation commencing on 1st May 2014. This paper aims to explore the impact of SPCO 2013 on Islamic Education in Brunei. Therefore, this study discusses the Brunei education system prior to and since the implementation of the SPCO 2013 and aims to provide a critical analysis of the action taken by the Brunei government to bring about changes in both its secular and religious schools. Mixed methods research is used to make more rigorous inferences about the research problems. Interviews have been conducted with the respective government officers for data collection. The data were collected and then analyzed using the thematic analysis technique, followed by descriptive quantitative analysis. The findings of this study indicate that the SPCO 2013 has had a significant impact on the Brunei Education Curriculum in both of its Public Schools and Religious Schools. Therefore, the findings conclude that curriculum revision was crucial to ensure that it was in line with Islamic teachings and did not contain any elements that contradicted Shariah law, and this also helps to promote awareness and avoid misconception of the SPCO 2013 among non-Muslim students who are an integral part of the Brunei society.

Abstract: We present a high-significance cross-correlation of CMB lensing maps from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) Data Release 6 (DR6) with luminous red galaxies (LRGs) from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Legacy Survey spectroscopically calibrated by DESI. We detect this cross-correlation at a significance of 38σ; combining our measurement with the Planck Public Release 4 (PR4) lensing map, we detect the cross-correlation at 50σ. Fitting this jointly with the galaxy auto-correlation power spectrum to break the galaxy bias degeneracy with σ 8, we perform a tomographic analysis in four LRG redshift bins spanning 0.4 ≤ z ≤ 1.0 to constrain the amplitude of matter density fluctuations through the parameter combination S 8× = σ 8 (Ωm / 0.3)0.4. Prior to unblinding, we confirm with extragalactic simulations that foreground biases are negligible and carry out a comprehensive suite of null and consistency tests. Using a hybrid effective field theory (HEFT) model that allows scales as small as k max = 0.6 h/ Mpc, we obtain a 3.3% constraint on S 8× = σ 8 (Ωm / 0.3)0.4 = 0.792+0.024-0.028 from ACT data, as well as constraints on S 8×(z) that probe structure formation over cosmic time. Our result is consistent with the early-universe extrapolation from primary CMB anisotropies measured by Planck PR4 within 1.2σ. Jointly fitting ACT and Planck lensing cross-correlations we obtain a 2.7% constraint of S 8× = 0.776+0.019-0.021, which is consistent with the Planck early-universe extrapolation within 2.1σ, with the lowest redshift bin showing the largest difference in mean. The latter may motivate further CMB lensing tomography analyses at z < 0.6 to assess the impact of potential systematics or the consistency of the ΛCDM model over cosmic time.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Stroke remains a major health concern globally, with oral anticoagulants widely prescribed for stroke prevention. The efficacy and safety of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) in anticoagulated patients with distal medium vessel occlusions (DMVO) are not well understood. METHODS: This retrospective analysis involved 1282 acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients who underwent MT in 37 centers across North America, Asia, and Europe from September 2017 to July 2023. Data on demographics, clinical presentation, treatment specifics, and outcomes were collected. The primary outcomes were functional outcomes at 90 days post-MT, measured by modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Despite the proven effectiveness of endovascular therapy (EVT) in acute ischemic strokes (AIS) involving anterior circulation large vessel occlusions, isolated posterior cerebral artery (PCA) occlusions (iPCAo) remain underexplored in clinical trials. This study investigates the comparative effectiveness and safety of EVT against medical management (MM) in patients with iPCAo. METHODS: This multinational, multicenter propensity score-weighted study analyzed data from the Multicenter Analysis of primary Distal medium vessel occlusions: effect of Mechanical Thrombectomy (MAD-MT) registry, involving 37 centers across North America, Asia, and Europe. We included iPCAo patients treated with either EVT or MM. The primary outcome was the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at 90 days, with secondary outcomes including functional independence, mortality, and safety profiles such as hemorrhagic complications. RESULTS: A total of 177 patients were analyzed (88 MM and 89 EVT). EVT showed a statistically significant improvement in 90-day mRS scores (OR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.30-1.00, p = 0.048), functional independence (OR = 2.52, 95% CI = 1.02-6.20, p = 0.045), and a reduction in 90-day mortality (OR = 0.12, 95% CI = 0.03-0.54, p = 0.006) compared to MM. Hemorrhagic complications were not significantly different between the groups. CONCLUSION: EVT for iPCAo is associated with better neurological outcomes and lower mortality compared to MM, without an increased risk of hemorrhagic complications. Nevertheless, these results should be interpreted with caution due to the studys observational design. The findings are hypothesis-generating and highlight the need for future randomized controlled trials to confirm these observations and establish definitive treatment guidelines for this patient population.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the reliability, responsiveness, and validity of the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA) in patients with lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs) who present with neurological symptoms, and quantify the threshold for a clinically meaningful change. METHODS: We analyzed data from three clinical trial cohorts (IB1001-201, IB1001-202, and IB1001-301) of patients with Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC) and GM2 Gangliosidoses (Tay-Sachs and Sandhoff disease) comprising 122 patients and 703 visits. Reproducibility was described as re-test reliability between repeat baseline visits or baseline and post-treatment washout visits. Responsiveness was determined in relation to the Investigators, Caregivers, and Patients Clinical Global Impression of Improvement (CGI-I). The CGI-I data was also used to quantify a threshold for a clinically meaningful improvement on the SARA scale. Using a qualitative methods approach, patient/caregiver interviews from the IB1001-301 trial were further used to assess a threshold of meaningful change as well as the breadth of neurological signs and symptoms captured and evaluated by the SARA scale. RESULTS: The Inter-Class Correlation (ICC) was 0.95 or greater for all three trials, indicating a high internal consistency/reliability. The mean change in SARA between repeat baseline and post-treatment washout visit assessments in all trials was -0.05, SD 1.98, i.e., minimal, indicating no significant differences, learning effects or other systematic biases. For the CGI-I responses and change in SARA scores, Area Under the Curve (AUC) values were 0.82, 0.71, and 0.77 for the Investigators, Caregivers, and Patients CGI-I respectively, indicating strong agreement. Further qualitative analyses of the patient/caregiver interviews demonstrated a 1-point or greater change on SARA to be a clinically meaningful improvement which is directly relevant to the patients everyday functioning and quality of life. Changes captured by the SARA were also paralleled by improvement in a broad range of neurological signs and symptoms and beyond cerebellar ataxia. CONCLUSION: Qualitative and quantitative data demonstrate the reliability and responsiveness of the SARA score as a valid measure of neurological signs and symptoms in LSDs with CNS involvement, such as NPC and GM2 Gangliosidoses. A 1-point change represents a clinically meaningful transition reflecting the gain or loss of complex function.

43. Patch-Based End-to-End Quantum Learning Network for Reduction and Classification of Classical Data

Abstract: In the noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) era, the control over the qubits is limited due to the errors caused by quantum decoherence, crosstalk, and imperfect calibration. Hence, it is necessary to reduce the size of the large-scale classical data, such as images, when they are to be processed by quantum networks. Conventionally input classical data are reduced in the classical domain using classical networks such as autoencoders and, subsequently, analyzed in the quantum domain. These conventional techniques involve training an enormous number of parameters, making them computationally costly. In this paper, a dynamic patch-based quantum domain data reduction network with a classical attention mechanism is proposed to avoid such data reductions, and subsequently coupled with a novel quantum classifier to perform classification tasks. The architecture processes the classical data sequentially in patches and reduces them using a quantum convolutional-inspired reduction network and further enriches them using a self-attention technique, which utilizes a classical mask derived from simple statistical operations on the native classical data, after measurement. The reduced representation is passed through a quantum classifier, which re-encodes it into quantum states, processes them through quantum ansatzes, and finally measures them to predict classes. This training process involves a joint optimization scheme that considers both the reduction and classifier networks, making the reduction operation dynamic. 44. Low-Energy Magnetic States of Tb Adatom on Graphene

Abstract: Electronic structure and magnetic interactions of a Tb adatom on graphene are investigated from first principles using combination of density functional theory and multiconfigurational quantum chemistry techniques including spin-orbit coupling. We determine that the six-fold symmetry hollow site is the preferred adsorption site and we investigate electronic spectrum for different adatom oxidation states including Tb$^{3+}$, Tb$^{2+}$, Tb$^{1+}$, and Tb$^{0}$. For all charge states, the Tb $4f^8$ configuration is retained with other adatom valence electrons being distributed over $5d_{xy}$, $5d_{x2+y2}$, and $6s/5d_0$ single-electron orbitals. We find strong intra-site adatom exchange coupling that ensures that the $5d6s$ spins are parallel to the $4f$ spin. For Tb$^{3+}$, the energy levels can be described by the $J=6$ multiplet split by the graphene crystal field. For other oxidation states, the interaction of $4f$ electrons with spin and orbital degrees of freedom of $6s5d$ electrons in the presence of spin-orbit coupling results in the low-energy spectrum composed closely lying effective multiplets that are split by the graphene crystal field. Stable magnetic moment is predicted for Tb$^{3+}$ and Tb$^{2+}$ adatoms due to uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and effective anisotropy barrier around 440 cm$^{-1}$ controlled by the temperature assisted quantum tunneling of magnetization through the third excited doublet. On the other hand, in-plane magnetic anisotropy is found for Tb$^{1+}$ and Tb$^{0}$ adatoms. Our results indicate that the occupation of the $6s5d$ orbitals can dramatically affect the magnetic anisotropy and magnetic moment stability of rare earth adatoms.

45. Leptogenesis in SO(10) with Minimal Yukawa sector

Abstract: In prior studies, a very minimal Yukawa sector within the $SO(10)$ Grand Unified Theory framework has been identified, comprising of Higgs fields belonging to a real $10_H$, a real $120_H$, and a $\overline{126}_H$ dimensional representations. In this work, within this minimal framework, we have obtained fits to fermion masses and mixings while successfully reproducing the cosmological baryon asymmetry via leptogenesis.The right-handed neutrino ($N_i$) mass spectrum obtained from the fit is strongly hierarchical, suggesting that $B-L$ asymmetry is dominantly produced from $N_2$ dynamics while $N_1$ is responsible for erasing the excess asymmetry. With this rather constrained Yukawa sector, fits are obtained both for normal and inverted ordered neutrino mass spectra, consistent with leptonic CP-violating phase $\delta_\mathrm{CP}$ indicated by global fits of neutrino oscillation data, while also satisfying the current limits from neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. In particular, the the leptonic CP-violating phase has a preference to be in the range $\delta_\mathrm{CP}\simeq (230-300)^\circ$. 46. Unified Origin of Inflation, Baryon Asymmetry, and Neutrino Mass

Abstract: In this work, we present a unified theoretical framework that simultaneously addresses some of the most intriguing puzzles in particle physics and cosmology, namely the origins of neutrino mass, baryon asymmetry, and cosmic inflation. In our model, inflation is driven by a combination of the Standard Model Higgs, the type II seesaw Higgs responsible for neutrino mass generation, and the unified symmetry-breaking Higgs field. During inflation, non-zero values of the latter field ensure the absence of the monopole problem. The baryon asymmetry is generated through the Affleck-Dine mechanism, facilitated by the non-zero angular motion in the phase of a complex scalar field, which is part of the inflaton. We find that the successful parameter region for generating baryon asymmetry through a renormalizable term in the scalar potential requires a rather heavy type II seesaw triplet, with a mass well beyond the TeV scale. Inflationary observables, in particular, the spectral index is in excellent agree with experimental observation, whereas tensor-to scalar ratio is expected to be probed by the future LiteBIRD and CMB-S4 missions., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures and 1 table

47. SONICS: Synthetic Or Not -- Identifying Counterfeit Songs

Abstract: The recent surge in AI-generated songs presents exciting possibilities and challenges. These innovations necessitate the ability to distinguish between human-composed and synthetic songs to safeguard artistic integrity and protect human musical artistry. Existing research and datasets in fake song detection only focus on singing voice deepfake detection (SVDD), where the vocals are AI-generated but the instrumental music is sourced from real songs. However, these approaches are inadequate for detecting contemporary end-to-end artificial songs where all components (vocals, music, lyrics, and style) could be AI-generated. Additionally, existing datasets lack music-lyrics diversity, long-duration songs, and open-access fake songs. To address these gaps, we introduce SONICS, a novel dataset for end-to-end Synthetic Song Detection (SSD), comprising over 97k songs (4,751 hours) with over 49k synthetic songs from popular platforms like Suno and Udio. Furthermore, we highlight the importance of modeling long-range temporal dependencies in songs for effective authenticity detection, an aspect entirely overlooked in existing methods. To utilize long-range patterns, we introduce SpecTTTra, a novel architecture that significantly improves time and memory efficiency over conventional CNN and Transformer-based models. For long songs, our top-performing variant outperforms ViT by 8% in F1 score, is 38% faster, and uses 26% less memory, while also surpassing ConvNeXt with a 1% F1 score gain, 20% speed boost, and 67% memory reduction., Comment: Accepted to ICLR 2025. 48. Magnetic proximity coupling to defects in a two-dimensional semiconductor

Abstract: The ultrathin structure and efficient spin dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials hold unprecedented opportunities for ultrafast memory devices, artificial intelligence circuits, and novel computing technology. For example, chromium thiophosphate (CrPS4) is one of the most promising 2D A-type AFM materials due to its robust stability in diverse environmental conditions and net out-of-plane magnetic moment in each layer, attributed to anisotropy in crystal axes (a and b). However, their net zero magnetic moment poses a challenge for detecting the Neel state that is used to encode information. In this study, we demonstrate the detection of the Neel vector by detecting the magnetic order of the surface layer by employing defects in tungsten diselenide (WSe2). These defects are ideal candidates for optically active transducers to probe the magnetic order due to their narrow linewidth and high susceptibility to magnetic fields. We observed spin-polarized charge transfer in the heterostructure of bulk CrPS4 and single-layer WSe2 indicating type-II band alignment as supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In the A-type AFM regime, the intensity of both right-handed and left-handed circularly polarized light emanating from the sample remains constant as a function of the applied magnetic field, indicating a constant polarized transition behavior. Our results showcase a new approach to optically characterizing the magnetic states of 2D bulk AFM material, highlighting avenues for future research and technological applications.

49. Probabilistic Surrogate Model for Accelerating the Design of Electric Vehicle Battery Enclosures for Crash Performance

Abstract: This paper presents a probabilistic surrogate model for the accelerated design of electric vehicle battery enclosures with a focus on crash performance. The study integrates high-throughput finite element simulations and Gaussian Process Regression to develop a surrogate model that predicts crash parameters with high accuracy while providing uncertainty estimates. The model was trained using data generated from thermoforming and crash simulations over a range of material and process parameters. Validation against new simulation data demonstrated the model's predictive accuracy with mean absolute percentage errors within 8.08% for all output variables. Additionally, a Monte Carlo uncertainty propagation study revealed the impact of input variability on outputs. The results highlight the efficacy of the Gaussian Process Regression model in capturing complex relationships within the dataset, offering a robust and efficient tool for the design optimization of composite battery enclosures.

50. Billion-files File Systems (BfFS): A Comparison

Abstract: As the volume of data being produced is increasing at an exponential rate that needs to be processed quickly, it is reasonable that the data needs to be available very close to the compute devices to reduce transfer latency. Due to this need, local filesystems are getting close attention to understand their inner workings, performance, and more importantly their limitations. This study analyzes few popular Linux filesystems: EXT4, XFS, BtrFS, ZFS, and F2FS by creating, storing, and then reading back one billion files from the local filesystem. The study also captured and analyzed read/write throughput, storage blocks usage, disk space utilization and overheads, and other metrics useful for system designers and integrators.
