PurposeTo compare baseline levels of exploratory biomarkers in the vitreous fluid of patients with primary retinal detachment who subsequently develop proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) versus those who do not.MethodsIn this exploratory case-control study, we evaluated the baseline protein biomarker levels from a biobank containing the vitreous fluid of patients who had undergone primary pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Undiluted samples were collected at the time of PPV and stored at -80°C. Samples from 13 patients who developed PVR within 6 months (PVR group) and 13 age- and gender-matched controls who did not develop PVR (control group) were included. Protein abundance levels were evaluated using a proximity extension assay, and a confirmatory enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure the concentration of vimentin.ResultsBaseline vimentin (Normalized Protein eXpression [NPX], 8.6 vs. 6.4, P < 0.0001) and heme oxygenase 1 (NPX 8.9 vs. 7.0, P < 0.001) levels were found to be elevated in vitreous fluid of patients who subsequently developed PVR compared to those who did not. Confirmatory analysis using ELISA demonstrated mean vimentin concentrations of 7254 vs. 2727 ng/mL in the PVR versus control groups (P = 0.0152). The odds ratio for developing PVR was 14 (confidence interval, 1.4-168; P = 0.03), assuming a baseline vimentin threshold of 7500 ng/mL.ConclusionsVimentin is an intermediate filament protein expressed by retinal glial cells, and our data combined with prior evidence suggest that it may serve as an early vitreous biomarker for subsequent PVR formation and reactive gliosis. Furthermore, we found, for the first time, elevated baseline levels of heme oxygenase 1, a measurable indicator of oxidative stress.Translational relevanceOur positive findings could impact clinical care for retinal detachment patients by facilitating risk stratification for targeted interventions or closer monitoring in those at the highest risk of developing PVR.

Imaging revealed peri-dental collections, accompanying maxillary sinusitis, and pre- and post-septal involvement. Immediate surgical debridement of necrotic tissue along with broad-spectrum antibiotics were pursued for management. Cultures grew multiple organisms, most notably Streptococcus milleri group and Staphylococcus lugdunensis.Conclusions and importancePONF is a rare yet potentially fatal disease. Streptococcus milleri group and a fulminant course are to be suspected when the source is odontogenic. Timely multidisciplinary surgical debridement and medical management with intravenous antibiotics is critical for best outcomes.

We report a case of a 47-year-old female who experienced periorbital swelling while descending from a Himalayan mountain climb and was found to have bilateral superior ophthalmic vein thromboses (SOVT). Infectious, autoimmune, and hypercoagulability work-up were negative with no cavernous sinus involvement. Symptoms resolved upon initiation of anticoagulation and oral steroids. SOVT is a rare but serious condition and has a risk of extending into the cavernous sinus if not treated early. Although infection is the most common etiology, venous thrombosis can be precipitated under high altitude and low oxygen pressure environments. We present a case of superior ophthalmic vein thrombosis associated with high-altitude conditions.

Abstract Objectives The study aimed to (i) compare the maladaptive domains and facets according to the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) Criterion B in patients with a type II bipolar disorder (BD-II) or major depressive disorder (MDD) with healthy controls (HCs), and (ii) investigating the relationship between affective temperaments and these domains and facets in the total sample. Methods Outpatients diagnosed with current BD-II (n = 37; female 62.2%) or MDD (n = 17; female 82.4%) based on the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) criteria and community HCs (n = 177; female 62.1%) in Kermanshah from July to October 2020 included this case-control study. All participants completed the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5), the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A), and the second version of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II). BackgroundMale testicular dysfunction is a considerable complication of anti-cancer therapies, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy, partly due to the increased oxidative stress caused by these treatments. Melatonin is an effective antioxidant agent that protects testicles against physical and toxic chemical stressors in animal models. This study aims to systematically review the melatonin’s protective effects against anti-cancer stressors on rodential testicular tissue.Materials and MethodAn extensive search was conducted in Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed for animal studies investigating exogenous melatonin’s protective effects on rodent testicles exposed to anti-cancer chemicals and radiotherapeutic agents. Using the DerSimonian and Laird random-effect model, standardized mean differences and 95% confidence intervals were estimated from the pooled data. The protocol was prospectively registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO: CRD42022355293).ResultsThe meta-analysis included 38 studies from 43 studies that were eligible for the review. Rats and mice were exposed to radiotherapy (ionizing radiations such as gamma- and roentgen radiation and radioactive iodine) or chemotherapy (methotrexate, paclitaxel, busulfan, cisplatin, doxorubicin, vinblastine, bleomycin, cyclophosphamide, etoposide, Taxol, procarbazine, docetaxel, and chlorambucil). According to our meta-analysis, all outcomes were significantly improved by melatonin therapy, including sperm quantity and quality (count, motility, viability, normal morphology, number of spermatogonia, Johnsen’s testicular biopsy score, seminiferous tubular diameter, and seminiferous epithelial height), serum level of reproductive hormones (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone and testosterone), tissue markers of oxidative stress (testicular tissue malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, glutathione, caspase-3, and total antioxidant capacity), and weight-related characteristics (absolute body, epididymis, testis, and relative testis to body weights). Most SYRCLE domains exhibited a high risk of bias in the included studies. Also, significant heterogeneity and small-study effects were detected.ConclusionIn male rodents, melatonin therapy was related to improved testicular histopathology, reproductive hormones, testis and body weights, and reduced levels of oxidative markers in testicular tissues of male rodents. The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of physical activity of faculty members at Allameh Tabatabai University during the coronavirus pandemic. This applied research has been done by a descriptive method. The statistical population of the study was the Allameh Tabatabai University faculty members in Iran. 284 people were selected through the available sampling method. A valid and reliable researcher-developed questionnaire was used for data collection, and a T-test was conducted for data analysis. The results of this study showed that the faculty members of the university do not have intense and moderate activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. But the general knowledge about the benefits of exercising during the coronavirus period has increased. In a general conclusion, COVID -19 crisis has created inactivity among university faculty members. Therefore, it is necessary to design and implement plans to increase the physical activity level among faculty members.

BackgroundEnvironmental pollution and infertility are two modern global challenges that agonize personal and public health. The causal relationship between these two deserves scientific efforts to intervene. It is believed that melatonin maintains antioxidant properties and may be utilized to protect the testicular tissue from oxidant effects caused by toxic materials.MethodsA systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to identify the animal trial studies that evaluated melatonin therapy’s effects on rodents’ testicular tissue against oxidative stress caused by heavy metal and non-heavy metal environmental pollutants. Data were pooled, and standardized mean difference and 95% confidence intervals were estimated using the random-effect model. Also, the risk of bias was assessed using the Systematic Review Centre for Laboratory animal Experimentation (SYRCLE) tool. (PROSPERO: CRD42022369872)ResultsOut of 10039 records, 38 studies were eligible for the review, of which 31 were included in the meta-analysis. Most of them showed beneficial effects of melatonin therapy on testicular tissue histopathology. [20 toxic materials were evaluated in this review, including arsenic, lead, hexavalent chromium, cadmium, potassium dichromate, sodium fluoride, cigarette smoke, formaldehyde, carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), 2-Bromopropane, bisphenol A, thioacetamide, bisphenol S, ochratoxin A, nicotine, diazinon, Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), Chlorpyrifos (CPF), nonylphenol, and acetamiprid.] The pooled results showed that melatonin therapy increased sperm count, motility, viability and body and testicular weights, germinal epithelial height, Johnsen's biopsy score, epididymis weight, seminiferous tubular diameter, serum testosterone, and luteinizing hormone levels, testicular tissue Malondialdehyde, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione levels. On the other hand, abnormal sperm morphology, apoptotic index, and testicular tissue nitric oxide were lower in the melatonin therapy arms. The included studies presented a high risk of bias in most SYRCLE domains.ConclusionIn conclusion, our study demonstrated amelioration of testicular histopathological characteristics, reproductive hormonal panel, and tissue markers of oxidative stress. Acquiring information about expectations is difficult as individuals' beliefs are unobservable. Thus, how expectation forms and how to model expectation is an open question in economic modelling that has been addressed recently by experimental economics. In this article, in order to identify expectations, we examine the behaviour of subjects when encountering new exchange rates in an experiment. Furthermore, in this experiment, differences of expectation formation among participants and their relation to cognitive abilities are analysed. To motivate people, incentive payments are used. In our setting, while the rational expectation hypothesis is not supported, the adaptive expectation is not rejected. Agents form their expectations in the same way regardless of their cognitive ability. In this context, individuals overreact to the new quantity of exchange rate which is assumed as a noisy perception. This finding is considered as evidence of emotional behaviours in the exchange market.

Background Regarding the less-known effects of beta-blocker consumption on the diagnostic value of the myocardial perfusion scan with dipyridamole stress in coronary artery disease (CAD), we aimed to compare the findings of the scans done on the beta-blocker consumption course and after discontinuation of this medications. Materials and Methods Thirty patients with probably CAD and abnormal myocardial perfusion scans (presence of reversible defect), who had been treated with beta-blockers for at least 3 months, were studied. Dipyridamole stress phase of myocardial perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) was performed two times with an interval of about 1 week, once after discontinuation of all antianginal and anti-ischemic medications, statins, and beta-blockers for 72 hours prior to the study, and again after discontinuation of all these medications except for beta-blockers. Imaging was done with the same protocol, radiopharmaceutical dose, and imaging parameters. Summed stress score (SSS), summed stress rest, and summed difference scores (SDS), total perfusion deficit (TPD), severity, and extension of myocardial perfusion defects in three coronary artery territories were analyzed, using quantitative perfusion SPECT software. Results Most variables such as SSS, SDS, TPD, severity, and extension of defects showed a significant difference between the two conditions including beta-blocker consumption and after discontinuing beta-blocker consumption before stress imaging (p < 0.05). Moreover, in patients on treatment with metoprolol, all studied factors including SSS, SDS, TPD, severity, and extension of perfusion defects were significantly reduced when patients consumed beta-blockers before SPECT evaluation (p < 0.05). Conclusion Beta-blocker consumption can lead to a decrease in the severity and extent of myocardial perfusion defects and therefore probably a decrease in the sensitivity of myocardial scans. Discontinuation of beta-blocker prior to the dipyridamole myocardial perfusion scan can improve diagnostic accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a cardiac neurohormone and has an important function in diagnosis and prognosis of left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. The TEI index is a novel non-invasive Doppler-based indicator, which evaluates systolic and diastolic myocardial function. There are few data regarding the prognostic role of TEI and isovolumic acceleration (IVA) indexes in HF and the relationship with neurohormonal activation. In this study, we evaluated the TEI and IVA index correlation with Pro-BNP in patients with systolic HF.Patients and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. We included consecutively patients with HF, admitted to Imam Reza Hospital, Mashhad, Iran between March 2017 and February 2019. A single investigator would perform echocardiography the next morning, for all patients. A checklist was completed for each patient and included demographic data, clinical data and different echocardiographic variables. We also recorded in-hospital mortality and outcome of patients during the follow-up stage.Results: We finally included 65 patients according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The mean age of participants was 63.38± 12.85 years. Most of them were male (61.5%). We showed that there is a direct and significant relationship between RVIVA (r=0.317, P=0.010) and LVIVA (r=0.254, P=0.041) with LVEF. There was no significant correlation between Pro-BNP level and NYHA classification (r=0.151, P=0.231). We showed that there was no correlation between Pro-BNP level and RV TEI index (r=0.065, P=0.490) and LV TEI index (r=0.071, P=0.419). In sub-group analysis, in patients with EF< 20%, we showed a significant correlation between the level of Pro-BNP and RV TEI index.Conclusion: We showed that the IVA index is correlated to EF in both RV and LV and can differ in large-scale in a population study. We also showed that RV TEI index is significantly correlated with Pro-BNP in patients with EF< 20%. Purpose: This research aims to investigate the quadruplet role of modern media (education, informing, making social participation, and culturing) on the development of Zurkhaneh sport. Method: This research is applicable in terms of objectives and is descriptive research in terms of data gathering methods. The statistical society of this research includes the athletes, experts, and activists of sports media in the context of the Zurkhaneh sport. Because the exact number of this society was not clear, the number of 384 persons were selected by random sampling. Its measuring tool was the researcher-made questionnaire that 12 professors and experts approved its content validity and its reliability was calculated using the compound reliability (Dillon – Goldstein) and was about 0.82. In addition, the SPSS software was used to analyze the data and PLS software was used to preset the model. Results: The results show that the “informing” factor had the maximum role in developing the Zurkhaneh sport with the factor loading of about 0.93. The other factor that had many roles in developing the Zurkhaneh sport was the “social participation” with the factor loading of about 0.91. The “education” factor with the factor loading of about 0.90 was in third place and the last factor was the “culturing” with the factor loading of about 0.90. Conclusions: According to the results of this research, it could be stated that modern media have obtained such power in the communication era that could affect public opinion. Therefore, the potentials of the modern media and their infinite capacity can be used by proper and correct operational planning to make great movements in developing various aspects of Zurkhaneh sport inside and outside of the country.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of strategic thinking skills on the effectiveness of strategy creation process of team sport federations in Iran. 57 questionnaires distributed among the managers of team sport federations to collect the required data. Strategic thinking skills questionnaire and effectiveness of strategy creation process questionnaire adapted from Moghimi and Ramezan questionnaire (2015). Structural equation modeling with partial least squares (PLS) approach was employed for data analysis. The results indicated that strategic thinking skills of managers had a significant effect on the effectiveness of strategy creation process in team sport federations. According to the findings, improving the strategic thinking skills of managers in sport federations, is critical in the process of creating effective strategies.

The purpose of the present study was to optimize and improve the status of ticket sales at Tehran Azadi Stadium and reduce customer waiting times in queues using methods Simulation and Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM). First, using objective observation and time-out, the waiting time for spectators in the ranks of the ticket and presentation and physical examination calculations and then using the simulation software, The entire service process has been simulated from the moment the ticket is purchased until the moment they enter the stadium, and the average waiting time for spectators in the queue for the provision of services is calculated. And then we look at the problems with ticket sales. Also, using interviews with elite and expert people, there are some ways to reduce waiting times for customers in the queue. And each of these views was examined using the simulation software; then scenarios were developed to improve the status quo and then, using multi-criteria decision-making methods, we ranked the scenarios and selected the best scenario.

BackgroundAspartate β-hydroxylase (ASPH) is an embryonic transmembrane protein aberrantly upregulated in cancer cells, associated with malignant transformation and, in some reports, with poor clinical prognosis.ObjectiveTo report the expression patterns of ASPH in acute myeloid leukemia (AML).MethodsCell surface expression of ASPH was measured via 8-color multiparameter flow cytometry in 41 AML patient samples (31 bone marrow, 10 blood) using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-conjugated anti-ASPH antibody, SNS-622. A mean fluorescent intensity (MFI) of 10 was used as a cutoff for ASPH surface expression positivity. Data regarding patient and disease characteristics were collected.ResultsASPH surface expression was found on AML blasts in 16 samples (39%). Higher ASPH expression was seen in myeloblasts of African American patients (p=0.02), but no correlation was found between ASPH expression and other patient or disease characteristics. No association was found between ASPH status and CR rate (p=0.53), EFS (p=0.87), or OS (p=0.17).ConclusionsASPH is expressed on blasts in approximately 40% of AML cases, and may serve as a new therapeutically targetable leukemia-associated antigen.

Background: The purpose of this research was the qualitative survey of effective factors on students' participation in extracurricular sports activities. Method: The research methodology was qualitative, the kind of phenomenology with targeted sampling gathered through in-depth interviews with 16 students from Allameh Tabataba’i University of Tehran, Iran. The number of students in this university (research population) was about 18,000 in the academic year 2016-17. All interviews were carefully recorded, and then the analysis of the text of the interview was carried out by Smith’s method. Results: Findings from the interviews with students was extracted in three main themes, including: Students' enthusiasm for sports activities, motivational factors of sports participation, and barriers to sports participation. 30 sub-themes are also included. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that authorities and managers of extracurricular sports activities of universities pave the way for the development of extracurricular sports activities for students by removing barriers to sports participation and improving the factors of motivation and enthusiasm for sports.

Purpose: To characterize and quantify the pre- and postoperative foveal structural and functional patterns in full-thickness macular holes. Methods: Subjects presenting with a full-thickness macular hole that had pre- and postoperative imaging were included. En face optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) was performed. Foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, macular hole size, number and size of perifoveal cysts were measured. Results: Five eyes from 5 patients were included in the study. The hole was closed in all eyes after the initial surgery. OCTA showed enlargement of the FAZ and delineation of the holes within the FAZ. Mean preoperative FAZ area was 0.41 ± 0.104 mm2. Visual acuity was improved and mean FAZ area was reduced to 0.27 ± 0.098 mm2 postoperatively (P

Land use change and soil organic carbon stock (SOCS) depletion over time is one of the predominant worldwide environmental problems related to global warming and the need to secure food production for an increasing world population. In our research, satellite images from 1988 and 2018 were analyzed for a 177.48 km2 region in Kurdistan Province, Iran. Across the study area. 186 disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected at two depths (0–20 cm and 20–50 cm). Bulk density (BD), soil organic carbon (SOC), rock fragments (RockF) and SOCS were measured. Random forest was used to model the spatial variability of SOCS. Land use was mapped with supervised classification and maximum likelihood approaches. The Kappa index and overall accuracy of the supervised classification and maximum likelihood land use maps varied between 83% and 88% and 78% and 85%, respectively. The area of forest and high-quality rangeland covered 5286 ha in 1988 and decreased by almost 30% by 2018. Most of the decrease was due to the establishment of cropland and orchards, and due to overgrazing of high-quality rangeland. As expected, the results of the analysis of variance showed that mean values of SOCS for the high-quality rangeland and forest were significantly higher compared to other land use classes. Thus, transformation of land with natural vegetation like forest and high-quality rangeland led to a loss of 15,494 Mg C in the topsoil, 15,475 Mg C in the subsoil and 15,489 Mg C−1 in total. We concluded that the predominant causes of natural vegetation degradation in the study area were mostly due to the increasing need for food, anthropogenic activities such as cultivation and over grazing, lack of government landuse legislation and the results of this study are useful for land use monitoring, decision making, natural vegetation planning and other areas of research and development in Kurdistan province.
