In this study, we examine the role of Twitter as a first line of defense against misinformation by tracking the public engagement with, and the platforms response to, 500 tweets concerning the RussoUkrainian conflict which were identified as misinformation. Using a realtime sample of 543 475 of their retweets, we find that users who geolocate themselves in the U.S. both produce and consume the largest portion of misinformation, however accounts claiming to be in Ukraine are the second largest source. At the time of writing, 84% of these tweets were still available on the platform, especially those having an anti-Russia narrative. For those that did receive some sanctions, the retweeting rate has already stabilized, pointing to ineffectiveness of the measures to stem their spread. The rapid advancement of Large Language Models (LLMs) has led to a multitude of application opportunities. One traditional task for Information Retrieval systems is the summarization and classification of texts, both of which are important for supporting humans in navigating large literature bodies as they e.g. exist with scientific publications. Due to this rapidly growing body of scientific knowledge, recent research has been aiming at building research information systems that not only offer traditional keyword search capabilities, but also novel features such as the automatic detection of research areas that are present at knowledge intensive organizations in academia and industry. To facilitate this idea, we present the results obtained from evaluating a variety of LLMs in their ability to sort scientific publications into hierarchical classifications systems. Spin gapless semiconductors based Heusler alloys are the special class of materials due to their unique band structure, high spin polarization and high Curie temperature. These materials exhibit a distinct electronic structure: a nonzero band gap in one spin channel while the other spin channel remains gapless, making them highly suitable for tunable spintronics. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of structural, magnetic, thermoelectric, and transport properties of the quaternary Heusler alloy CoFeMnSn is conducted. X-ray diffraction and Neutron diffraction analyses confirm a well ordered structure with partial antisite disorder between Co, Fe and Mn, Sn atoms. Magnetic studies show that the material exhibits room-temperature ferromagnetism, with a Curie temperature of around 660 K. Notably, we observe an anomalous Hall effect linked to intrinsic mechanisms driven by Berry curvature, underscoring the intricate relationship between structural disorder and electronic behavior. Transport measurements also highlight the impact of antisite disorder on the systems, with resistivity decreasing as temperature increases. The hot and dense QCD matter, known as the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), is explored through heavy-ion collision experiments at the LHC and RHIC. Jets and heavy flavors, produced from the initial hard scattering, are used as hard probes to study the properties of the QGP. Recent experimental observations on jet quenching and heavy-flavor suppression have strengthened our understanding, allowing for fine-tuning of theoretical models in hard probes. The second conference, HOT QCD Matter 2024, was organized to bring the community together for discussions on key topics in the field. This article comprises 15 sections, each addressing various aspects of hard probes in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, offering a snapshot of current experimental observations and theoretical advancements. This article addresses the gap in computational painting analysis focused on Persian miniature painting, a rich cultural and artistic heritage. It introduces a novel approach using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to classify Persian miniatures from five schools: Herat, Tabriz-e Avval, Shiraz-e Avval, Tabriz-e Dovvom, and Qajar. The method achieves an average accuracy of over 91%. A meticulously curated dataset captures the distinct features of each school, with a patch-based CNN approach classifying image segments independently before merging results for enhanced accuracy. Hate speech has grown into a pervasive phenomenon, intensifying during times of crisis, elections, and social unrest. Multiple approaches have been developed to detect hate speech using artificial intelligence, but a generalized model is yet unaccomplished. The challenge for hate speech detection as text classification is the cost of obtaining high-quality training data. This study focuses on detecting bilingual hate speech in YouTube comments and measuring the impact of using additional data from other platforms in the performance of the classification model. We examine the value of additional training datasets from cross-platforms for improving the performance of classification models. We also included factors such as content similarity, definition similarity, and common hate words to measure the impact of datasets on performance. Our findings show that adding more similar datasets based on content similarity, hate words, and definitions improves the performance of classification models. The best performance was obtained by combining datasets from YouTube comments, Twitter, and Gab with an F1-score of 0.74 and 0.68 for English and German YouTube comments. more...

To build a smarter and safer city, a secure, efficient, and sustainable transportation system is a key requirement. The autonomous driving system (ADS) plays an important role in the development of smart transportation and is considered one of the major challenges facing the automotive sector in recent decades. A car equipped with an autonomous driving system (ADS) comes with various cutting-edge functionalities such as adaptive cruise control, collision alerts, automated parking, and more. A primary area of research within ADAS involves identifying road obstacles in construction zones regardless of the driving environment. This paper presents an innovative and highly accurate road obstacle detection model utilizing computer vision technology that can be activated in construction zones and functions under diverse drift conditions, ultimately contributing to build a safer road transportation system. Once analysed, location trajectories can provide valuable insights beneficial to various applications. However, such data is also highly sensitive, rendering them susceptible to privacy risks in the event of mismanagement, for example, revealing an individual's identity, home address, or political affiliations. Hence, ensuring that privacy is preserved for this data is a priority. One commonly taken measure to mitigate this concern is aggregation. Previous work by Xu et al. shows that trajectories are still recoverable from anonymised and aggregated datasets. However, the study lacks implementation details, obfuscating the mechanisms of the attack. Additionally, the attack was evaluated on commercial non-public datasets, rendering the results and subsequent claims unverifiable. This study reimplements the trajectory recovery attack from scratch and evaluates it on two open-source datasets, detailing the preprocessing steps and implementation. Results confirm that privacy leakage still exists despite common anonymisation and aggregation methods but also indicate that the initial accuracy claims may have been overly ambitious. We release all code as open-source to ensure the results are entirely reproducible and, therefore, verifiable. Moreover, we propose a stronger attack by designing a series of enhancements to the baseline attack. These enhancements yield higher accuracies by up to 16%, providing an improved benchmark for future research in trajectory recovery methods. Our improvements also enable online execution of the attack, allowing partial attacks on larger datasets previously considered unprocessable, thereby furthering the extent of privacy leakage. A significant part of contemporary research in autonomous vehicles is dedicated to the development of safety critical systems where state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, like computer vision (CV), can play a major role. Vision models have great potential for the real-time detection of numerous traffic signs and obstacles, which is essential to avoid accidents and protect human lives. Despite vast potential, computer vision-based systems have critical safety concerns too if the traffic condition drifts over time. This paper represents an analysis of how data drift can affect the performance of vision models in terms of traffic sign detection. The novelty in this research is provided through a YOLO-based fusion model that is trained with drifted data from the CARLA simulator and delivers a robust and enhanced performance in object detection. The enhanced model showed an average precision of 97.5\% compared to the 58.27\% precision of the original model. The framing of events in various media and discourse spaces is crucial in the era of misinformation and polarization. Many studies, however, are limited to specific media or networks, disregarding the importance of cross-platform diffusion. This study overcomes that limitation by conducting a multi-platform framing analysis on Twitter, YouTube, and traditional media analyzing the 2019 Koran burning in Kristiansand, Norway. It examines media and policy frames and uncovers network connections through shared URLs. The findings show that online news emphasizes the incident's legality, while social media focuses on its morality, with harsh hate speech prevalent in YouTube comments. Large language models (LLMs) are capable of producing documents, and retrieval augmented generation (RAG) has shown itself to be a powerful method for improving accuracy without sacrificing fluency. However, not all information can be retrieved from text. We propose an approach that uses the analysis of structured data to generate fact sets that are used to guide generation in much the same way that retrieved documents are used in RAG. This analytics augmented generation (AAG) approach supports the ability to utilize standard analytic techniques to generate facts that are then converted to text and passed to an LLM. We present a neurosymbolic platform, Satyrn, that leverages AAG to produce accurate, fluent, and coherent reports grounded in large scale databases. Monolayer molybdenum disulfide ($\mathrm{MoS_2}$) under strain has many interesting properties and possible applications in technology. A recent experimental study examined the effect of strain on the bandgap of monolayer $\mathrm{MoS_2}$ on a mildly curved graphite surface, reporting that under biaxial strain with a Poisson's ratio of 0.44, the bandgap decreases at a rate of 400 meV/\% strain. In this work, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations for a free-standing $\mathrm{MoS_2}$ monolayer, using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) PBE, the hybrid functional HSE06, and many-body perturbation theory with the GW approximation using PBE wavefunctions (G0W0@PBE). For the unstrained monolayer, we found a standard level of agreement for the bandgap between theory and experiment. For biaxial strain at the experimental Poisson's ratio, we found that the bandgap decreases at rates of 63 meV/\% strain (PBE), 73 meV/\% strain (HSE06), and 43 meV/\% strain (G0W0@PBE), which are significantly smaller than the experimental rate. We also found that PBE predicts a similarly smaller rate (90 meV/\% strain) for a different Poisson's ratio of 0.25. Spin-orbit correction (SOC) has little effect on the gap or its strain dependence. The strong disagreement between theory and experiment may reflect an unexpectedly strong effect of the substrate on the strain dependence of the gap. Additionally, we observed a transition from a direct to an indirect bandgap under strain, and (under an equal biaxial strain of 10\%) a semiconductor-to-metal transition, consistent with previous theoretical work. more...

Research organisations and their research outputs have been growing considerably in the past decades. This large body of knowledge attracts various stakeholders, e.g., for knowledge sharing, technology transfer, or potential collaborations. However, due to the large amount of complex knowledge created, traditional methods of manually curating catalogues are often out of time, imprecise, and cumbersome. Finding domain experts and knowledge within any larger organisation, scientific and also industrial, has thus become a serious challenge. Hence, exploring an institutions domain knowledge and finding its experts can only be solved by an automated solution. This work presents the scheme of an automated approach for identifying scholarly experts based on their publications and, prospectively, their teaching materials. Based on a search engine, this approach is currently being implemented for two universities, for which some examples are presented. The proposed system will be helpful for finding peer researchers as well as starting points for knowledge exploitation and technology transfer. The increase in active users on social networking sites (SNSs) has also observed an increase in harmful content on social media sites. Harmful content is described as an inappropriate activity to harm or deceive an individual or a group of users. Alongside existing methods to detect misinformation and hate speech, users still need to be well-informed about the harmfulness of the content on SNSs. This study proposes a user-interactive system TweetInfo for mitigating the consumption of harmful content by providing metainformation about the posts. It focuses on two types of harmful content: hate speech and misinformation. TweetInfo provides insights into tweets by doing content analysis. Personal devices have adopted diverse authentication methods, including biometric recognition and passcodes. In contrast, headphones have limited input mechanisms, depending solely on the authentication of connected devices. We present Moonwalk, a novel method for passive user recognition utilizing the built-in headphone accelerometer. Our approach centers on gait recognition; enabling users to establish their identity simply by walking for a brief interval, despite the sensor's placement away from the feet. We employ self-supervised metric learning to train a model that yields a highly discriminative representation of a user's 3D acceleration, with no retraining required. We tested our method in a study involving 50 participants, achieving an average F1 score of 92.9% and equal error rate of 2.3%. We extend our evaluation by assessing performance under various conditions (e.g. shoe types and surfaces). Hand gesture recognition is becoming a more prevalent mode of human-computer interaction, especially as cameras proliferate across everyday devices. Despite continued progress in this field, gesture customization is often underexplored. Customization is crucial since it enables users to define and demonstrate gestures that are more natural, memorable, and accessible. However, customization requires efficient usage of user-provided data. We introduce a method that enables users to easily design bespoke gestures with a monocular camera from one demonstration. We employ transformers and meta-learning techniques to address few-shot learning challenges. Unlike prior work, our method supports any combination of one-handed, two-handed, static, and dynamic gestures, including different viewpoints, and the ability to handle irrelevant hand movements. We implement three real-world applications using our customization method, conduct a user study, and achieve up to 94% average recognition accuracy from one demonstration. We contribute the first publicly available dataset of factual claims from different platforms and fake YouTube videos on the 2023 Israel-Hamas war for automatic fake YouTube video classification. The FakeClaim data is collected from 60 fact-checking organizations in 30 languages and enriched with metadata from the fact-checking organizations curated by trained journalists specialized in fact-checking. Further, we classify fake videos within the subset of YouTube videos using textual information and user comments. We used a pre-trained model to classify each video with different feature combinations. Our best-performing fine-tuned language model, Universal Sentence Encoder (USE), achieves a Macro F1 of 87\%, which shows that the trained model can be helpful for debunking fake videos using the comments from the user discussion.
