The phase-field method has become a useful tool for the simulation of classical metallurgical phase transformations as well as other phenomena related to materials science. The thermodynamic consistency that forms the basis of these formulations lends to its strong predictive capabilities and utility. However, a strong impediment to the usage of the method for typical applied problems of industrial and academic relevance is the significant overhead with regard to the code development and know-how required for quantitative model formulations. In this paper, we report the development of an open-source phase-field software stack that contains generic formulations for the simulation of multi-phase and multi-component phase transformations. The solvers incorporate thermodynamic coupling that allows the realization of simulations with real alloys in scenarios directly relevant to the materials industry. Further, the solvers utilize parallelization strategies using either multiple CPUs or GPUs to provide cross-platform portability and usability on available supercomputing machines. Finally, the solver stack also contains a graphical user interface to gradually introduce the usage of the software. The user interface also provides a collection of post-processing tools that allow the estimation of useful metrics related to microstructural evolution.

In density functional theory (DFT) based total energy studies, the van der Waals (vdW) and zero-point vibrational energy (ZPVE) correction terms are included to obtain energy differences between polymorphs. We propose and compute a new correction term to the total energy, due to electron-phonon interactions (EPI). We rely on Allen's general formalism, which goes beyond the Quasi-Harmonic Approximation (QHA), to include the free energy contributions due to quasiparticle interactions. We show that, for semiconductors and insulators, the EPI contributions to the free energies of electrons and phonons are the corresponding zero-point energy contributions. Using an approximate version of Allen's formalism in combination with the Allen-Heine theory for EPI corrections, we calculate the zero-point EPI corrections to the total energy for cubic and hexagonal polytypes of Carbon, Silicon and Silicon Carbide. The EPI corrections alter the energy differences between polytypes. In SiC polytypes, the EPI correction term is more sensitive to crystal structure than the vdW and ZPVE terms and is thus essential in determining their energy differences. It clearly establishes that the cubic SiC-3C is metastable and hexagonal SiC-4H is the stable polytype. Our results are consistent with the experimental results of Kleykamp. Our study enables the inclusion of EPI corrections as a separate term in the free energy expression. The electron-phonon interaction contribution to the electronic energies is included in density functional total energy calculations with ab initio pseudopotentials via the Allen formalism [Phys. Rev. B 18, 5217 (1978)] to obtain temperature dependent electronic structure of diamond and silicon. This method allows us to obtain the thermally-averaged ab initio electronic structure in a straightforward and computationally inexpensive way. Our investigations on the finite temperature electronic structure of diamond and silicon lead to a new criterion, temperature transferability, which is required in the ab initio pseudopotentials for temperature dependent studies. The temperature transferability of the Troullier-Martins pseudopotentials used in this work is strongly dependent on the cut-off radius and the inclusion of the unbound 3d$^0$ state. The finite temperature indirect band gaps are highly sensitive to the choice of cut-off radius used in the pseudopotentials. The finite temperature band structures and density of states show that thermal vibrations affect the electron energies throughout the valence and conduction band. We compare our results on the band gap shifts with that due to the Debye-Waller term in the Allen-Heine theory and discuss the observed differences in the zero point and high temperature band gap shifts. Although, the electron energy shifts in the highest occupied valence band and lowest unoccupied conduction band enable to obtain the changes in the indirect and direct band gaps at finite temperatures, the shifts in other electronic levels with temperature enable investigations into the finite temperature valence charge distribution in the bonding region. Thus, we demonstrate that the Allen theory provides a simple and theoretically justified formalism to obtain finite temperature valence electron charge densities that go beyond the rigid pseudo-atom approximation., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 8 tables

We have investigated different geometries of two dimensional (2D) infinite length Ni nanowires of increasing width using spin density functional theory calculations. Our simulations demonstrate that the parallelogram motif is the most stable and structures that incorporate the parallelogram motif are more stable as compared to rectangular structures. The wires are conducting and the conductance channels increase with increasing width. The wires have a non-linear behavior in the ballistic anistropic magnetoresistance ratios with respect to the magnetization directions. All 2D nanowires as well as Ni (111) and Ni (100) monolayer investigated are ferromagnetic under the Stoner criterion and exhibit enhanced magnetic moments as compared to bulk Ni and the respective Ni monolayers. The Stoner parameter is seen to depend on the structure and the dimension of the Nws. The easy axis for all nickel nanowires under investigation is observed to be along the wire axis. The double rectangular nanowire exhibits a magnetic anomaly with a smaller magnetic moment when compared to Ni (100) monolayer and is the only structure with an easy axis perpendicular to the wire axis., Comment: 13 Pages

We investigate the chiral magnetic order in free-standing planar 3$d$-5$d$ bi-atomic metallic chains (3$d$: Fe, Co; 5$d$: Ir, Pt, Au) using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. We found that the antisymmetric exchange interaction, commonly known as Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), contributes significantly to the energetics of the magnetic structure. We used the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method and performed self-consistent calculations of homogeneous spin spirals, calculating the DMI by treating the effect of spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in the basis of the spin-spiral states in first-order perturbation theory. To gain insight into the DMI results of our ab initio calculations, we develop a minimal tight-binding model of three atoms and 4 orbitals that contains all essential features: the spin-canting between the magnetic $3d$ atoms, the spin-orbit interaction at the $5d$ atoms, and the structure inversion asymmetry facilitated by the triangular geometry. We found that spin-canting can lead to spin-orbit active eigenstates that split in energy due to the spin-orbit interaction at the $5d$ atom. We show that, the sign and strength of the hybridization, the bonding or antibonding character between $d$-orbitals of the magnetic and non-magnetic sites, the bandwidth and the energy difference between states occupied and unoccupied states of different spin projection determine the sign and strength of the DMI. We have investigated the stability and conductivity of unsupported, two dimensional infinite gold nanowires using ab-initio density functional theory (DFT). Two dimensional ribbon like nanowires, with 1-5 rows of gold atoms in the non-periodic direction and with different possible structures have been considered. The nanowires with > 2 rows of atoms exhibit dimerization, similar to finite wires, along the non-periodic direction. Our results show that in these zero thickness nanowires, the parallelogram motif is the most stable. A comparison between parallelogram and rectangular shaped nanowires of increasing width indicates that zero thickness (111) oriented wires have a higher stability over (100). A detailed analysis of the electronic structure, reveals that the (111) oriented structures show increased delocalization of s and p electrons in addition to a stronger delocalization of the d electrons and hence are the most stable. The density of states show that the nanowires are metallic and conducting except for the double zigzag structure, which, is semiconducting. Conductance calculations show transmission for a wide range of energies in all the stable nanowires with more than two rows of atoms. The conductance channels are not purely s and have strong contributions from the d levels and weak contributions from the p levels., Comment: 29 pages

The ground state geometries of some small clusters have been obtained via ab initio molecular dynamical simulations by employing density based energy functionals. The approximate kinetic energy functionals that have been employed are the standard Thomas-Fermi $(T_{TF})$ along with the Weizsacker correction $T_W$ and a combination $F(N_e)T_{TF} + T_W$. It is shown that the functional involving $F(N_e)$ gives superior charge densities and bondlengths over the standard functional. Apart from dimers and trimers of Na, Mg, Al, Li, Si, equilibrium geometries for $Li_nAl, n=1,8$ and $Al_{13}$ clusters have also been reported. For all the clusters investigated, the method yields the ground state geometries with the correct symmetries with bondlengths within 5\% when compared with the corresponding results obtained via full orbital based Kohn-Sham method. The use of energy functionals based on density as the basic variable is advocated for ab initio molecular dynamics. It is demonstrated that the constraint of positivity of density can be incorporated easily by using square root density for minimization of the energy functional. An ad hoc prescription for including nonlocal pseudopotentials for plane wave based calculations is proposed and is shown to yield improved results. Applications are reported for equilibrium geometries of small finite systems, viz. dimers and trimers of simple metal atoms like Na and Mg, which represent a rather stringent test for approximate kinetic energy functionals involved in such calculations., Comment: 15 pages, RevTeX 3.0, 3 PS Figures at the end
