1. Optimizing recording speed and interrogation window for rotating flow recorded in the ambient light: PIV analysis

Abstract

The present study reports PIV analysis of the surface flow profile using a smartphone camera in ambient light instead of high-tech equipment like a professional camera and high-power laser/ LEDs. Additionally, it provides a stepwise method for optimizing recording speed and interrogation window size for the vortex flow generated at different rotational frequencies of the magnetic stirrer. The optimization method has been explained with an example of the vortex flow generated by a magnetic stirrer. The analysis has been carried out using the Matlab-based application PIVlab. Finally, the optimized parameters have been compared with the Burger vortex model, which shows good agreement with the PIV data. Abstract

Neuroinvasive infection is the most common cause of meningoencephalitis in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), but autoimmune etiologies have been reported. We present the case of a 51-year-old man living with HIV infection with steroid-responsive meningoencephalitis whose comprehensive pathogen testing was non-diagnostic. Subsequent tissue-based immunofluorescence with acute-phase cerebrospinal fluid revealed anti-neural antibodies localizing to the axon initial segment (AIS), the node of Ranvier (NoR), and the subpial space. Phage display immunoprecipitation sequencing identified ankyrinG (AnkG) as the leading candidate autoantigen. A synthetic blocking peptide encoding the PhIP-Seq-identified AnkG epitope neutralized CSF IgG binding to the AIS and NoR, thereby confirming a monoepitopic AnkG antibody response. However, subpial immunostaining persisted, indicating the presence of additional autoantibodies. Review of archival tissue-based staining identified candidate AnkG autoantibodies in a 60-year-old woman with metastatic ovarian cancer and seizures that were subsequently validated by cell-based assay. AnkG antibodies were not detected by tissue-based assay and/or PhIP-Seq in control CSF (N = 39), HIV CSF (N = 79), or other suspected and confirmed neuroinflammatory CSF cases (N = 1,236). Therefore, AnkG autoantibodies in CSF are rare but extend the catalog of AIS and NoR autoantibodies associated with neurological autoimmunity.

Abstract

Many cooperatively breeding species live in groups with complex structure—large group sizes, low and variable kin structure, and multiple breeding pairs. Since these mixed‐kin groups typically form because of immigration of unrelated individuals of both sexes in addition to limited offspring dispersal, differences in patterns of dispersal can generate variation in group structure, even within the same species or population. Here, we examine how environmentally mediated dispersal patterns influence variation in group structure in the plural breeding superb starling (Lamprotornis superbus), an avian cooperative breeder that inhabits a spatiotemporally variable savanna environment and forms mixed‐kin groups with variable group sizes and more than one breeding pair per group. Using 4068 genome‐wide polymorphic loci and fine‐scale, remotely sensed ecological data from 22 groups sampled across a nearly 200 km2 environmental gradient in central Kenya, we find evidence of not only frequent and long‐distance dispersal in both sexes (low isolation‐by‐distance and weak genetic structure), but also directional dispersal from small groups in lower quality habitat with low normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) to large groups in higher quality habitat with high NDVI. Additionally, we find stronger genetic structure among groups in lower quality habitat, and higher genetic diversity and lower relatedness of groups in higher quality habitat. Previous work using long‐term data from groups in the same population has shown that groups with lower relatedness are larger and have more breeding pairs. Long‐distance, directional dispersal to maximise individual fitness can thus lead to smaller and simpler kin‐based social groups in lower quality habitat, but larger and more complex mixed‐kin groups in higher quality habitat. Such intraspecific, within‐population variation in group structure, including variation in kin structure of social groups, could have profound implications for the relative importance of the evolutionary mechanisms (i.e. direct vs. indirect fitness benefits) underlying the formation of cooperative societies. Abstract

Aim: To assess and summarize effect of computerized anesthesia techniques in reducing pain as compared to conventional technique in adult patients undergoing dental treatment. We conducted a comprehensive Methods: literature search on four electronic databases, PubMed, net of information, google scholar, and Cochrane library for this systematic review after registering with Prospero. The inclusion and exclusion was stringent to conduct the filtering and select the Randomised Control Trial/ Clinical Trial which were eligible for qualitative and subsequent quantitative analysis. The heterogeneity was analyzed with the I2 values and risk of bias was conducted with appropriate tool form Cochrane. Review Manager 5.3 was used for meta-analysis. Out of 24 studies, 08 studies were further Results: included for quantitative analysis and the meta-analysis was interpreted with the forest plot. The outcome which we assessed was the pain outcome after anaesthesia. The mean cumulative difference was -1.73 (CI: -3.01to -0.45). The heterogeneity was I2=91%, hence we applied the random effects model for analysis. The CCLAD seems to be a promising Conclusion: device, offering a less painful method of anaesthesia administration; which showed that the pain was higher in conventional group when compared to other interventional techniques.

Abstract

Objective To test the hypothesis that myeloneuropathy is a presenting phenotype of paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes we retrospectively reviewed clinical, radiologic, and serologic features of 32 patients with concomitant paraneoplastic spinal cord and peripheral nervous system involvement. Methods Observational study investigating patients with myeloneuropathy and underlying cancer or onconeural antibody seropositivity. Results Among 32 patients with paraneoplastic myeloneuropathy, 20 (63%) were women with median age 61 years (range 27–84 years). Twenty-six patients (81%) had classified onconeural antibodies (amphiphysin, n = 8; antineuronal nuclear antibody [ANNA] type 1 [anti-Hu], n = 5; collapsin response mediator protein 5 [CRMP5] [anti-CV2], n = 6; Purkinje cell cytoplasmic antibody type 1 [PCA1] [anti-Yo], n = 1; Purkinje cell cytoplasmic antibody type 2 [PCA2], n = 2; kelch-like protein 11 [KLHL11], n = 1; and combinations thereof: ANNA1/CRMP5, n = 1; ANNA1/amphiphysin, n = 1; ANNA3/CRMP5, n = 1). Cancer was confirmed in 25 cases (onconeural antibodies, n = 19; unclassified antibodies, n = 3; no antibodies, n = 3). Paraneoplastic myeloneuropathies had asymmetric paresthesias (84%), neuropathic pain (78%), subacute onset (72%), sensory ataxia (69%), bladder dysfunction (69%), and unintentional weight loss >15 pounds (63%). Neurologic examination demonstrated concomitant distal or asymmetric hyporeflexia and hyperreflexia (81%), impaired vibration and proprioception (69%), Babinski response (68%), and asymmetric weakness (66%). MRI showed longitudinally extensive (45%), tract-specific spinal cord T2 hyperintensities (39%) and lumbar nerve root enhancement (38%). Ten of 28 (36%) were unable to ambulate independently at last follow-up (median 24 months, range 5–133 months). Combined oncologic and immunologic therapy had more favorable modified Rankin Scale scores at post-treatment follow-up compared to those receiving either oncologic or immunologic therapy alone (2 [range 1–4] vs 4 [range 2–6], p < 0.001). Conclusions Paraneoplastic etiologies should be considered in the evaluation of subacute myeloneuropathies. Recognition of key characteristics of paraneoplastic myeloneuropathy may facilitate early tumor diagnosis and initiation of immunosuppressive treatment.
