On October 7, 2021, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the Harnai (Baluchistan) region of Pakistan, causing several fatalities and injuries within the epicentral area. First-order tectonic deformation in this region is caused by the convergence of the Indian Plate with respect to the Eurasian Plate. The Katwaz Block hinders the motion of the Indian Plate, resulting in the formation of strike-slip faults. In this study, the P-wave first-motion polarity technique was used to determine the mainshock faulting style. Cyclic scanning of the polarity solutions was applied to determine the most suitable focal mechanism solution among the available solutions generated by the FOCMEC (focal mechanism) software. The nodal planes correspond to different faulting styles (i.e., thrust and strike-slip faulting). A nodal plane oriented in the NW-SE direction corresponded to a strike-slip mechanism, which was considered to be the fault plane. Tectonically, this earthquake was associated with the Harnai-Karahi strike-slip fault zone owing to the fault strike and direction of slip. The apparent stress drop, fault length, and moment magnitude of the Harnai earthquake were 35.4 bar, 6.1 km, and 5.9, respectively. A lower b-value for the Gutenberg-Richter law was observed prior to the earthquake. Higher α- than b-values (α > b) indicate that this earthquake was governed by large events as opposed to small-magnitude events. The Harnai sequence had a decay exponent close to unity, lasted for 145 days, and produced few aftershocks. The study will help the future hazard mitigation in the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ticks (Acari: ixodid) are notorious blood sucking ecto-parasites of wide range of animals which serve as vector of different types of pathogens like viruses, bacteria, rickettsia and protozoa and cause mortality in humans and animals. This study was focused on morphological and molecular identification of ixodid ticks, using morphological keys and an internal transcribed spacer (ITS-2) Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Moreover, the presence of Babesia and Theileria species was also investigated in ticks using 18S rRNA gene. Identification of ticks collected from 384 cattle and 384 buffaloes screened revealed three tick genera and six tick species: Rhipicephalus microplus, Rhipicephalus decoloratus, Rhipicephalus annulatus, Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum, Hyalomma anatolicum excavatum and Haemaphysalis punctata. Of those four species were confirmed on morphological basis, two ticks species Rhipicephalus microplus and Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum whose morphological feature were overlapping with other identified species, were confirmed through molecular tools amplifying ITS-2 gene. Ticks DNA were then examined by PCR employing a genetic marker that target (18S rRNA gene), for the presence of Babesia and Theileria species in identified ticks. The most common pathogen species observed in ticks was Theileria annulata. This study exposed different hard tick species are prevalent in the study area and these ticks are playing major role in transmission of protozoa (Theileria annulata). Eimeria acervulina is one of seven Eimeria spp. that can infect chicken duodenal epithelial cells. Eimeria microneme protein 3 (MIC3) plays a vital role in the invasion of host epithelial tissue by the parasite. In this study, we found that chicken (Gallus gallus) ubiquitin conjugating enzyme E2F (UBE2F) could bind to the MIC3 protein of E. acervulina (EaMIC3), as screened using the yeast two-hybrid system, and that it might be the putative receptor protein of EaMIC3. The UBE2F gene was cloned from chicken duodenal epithelial cells. The recombinant protein of UBE2F (rUBE2F) was expressed in E. coli and the reactogenicity of rUBE2F was analyzed by Western blot. Gene sequencing revealed that the opening reading frame (ORF) of UBE2F was 558 base pairs and encoded a protein of 186 amino acids with a molecular weight of 20.46 kDa. The predicted UBE2F protein did not contain signal peptides or a transmembrane region, but had multiple O-glycosylation and phosphorylation sites. A phylogenetic analysis showed that the chicken UBE2F protein is closely related to those of quail and pigeon (Coturnix japonica and Columba livia). A sporozoite invasion-blocking assay showed that antisera against rUBE2F significantly inhibited the invasion of E. acervulina sporozoites in vitro. Animal experiments indicated that the antisera could significantly enhance average body weight gains and reduce mean lesion scores following a challenge with E. acervulina. These results therefore imply that the chicken UBE2F protein might be the target receptor molecule of EaMIC3 that is involved in E. acervulina invasion.

Semiconductor ionic electrolytes, especially heterostructure composites, have a significant role in enhancing oxide ion conductivity and peak power density (PPD) because of their interfacial contact. In this work, the fluorite structure CeO2 and spinel-based CoAl2O4 samples, as a heterostructure composite electrolyte, are successfully fabricated. The p-type CoAl2O4 and n-type CeO2 heterostructure (CeO2-CoAl2O4) used as an electrolyte exhibits a cell performance of 758 mW/cm2 under fuel cell H2/air conditions at 550 °C, which is quite higher than the pure CoAl2O4 and CeO2 fuel cell devices. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) verified the heterostructure formation including the morphological analysis of the prepared heterostructure composite. The heterostructure-based CeO2-CoAl2O4 composite achieved a higher ionic conductivity of 0.13 S/cm at 550 °C temperature, which means that the constructed device successfully works as an electrolyte by suppressing electronic conductivity. Meanwhile, the obtained results demonstrate the semiconductor ionic heterostructure effect by adjusting the appropriate composition to build heterostructure of the n-type (CeO2) and p-type (CoAl2O4) components and built-in electric field.
