In this thesis, an entirely new approach for the supramolecular self-assembly of SWCNT is further developed. Exploiting the well-documented endohedral encapsulation of fullerenes within carbon nanotubes, C60-functionalised, star-shaped conjugated molecules act as molecular linkers, directing the assembly of the SWCNTs. Based upon porphyrin and truxene cores, two fullerene linker molecules were synthesised, and their geometric influence over the inter-SWCNT angles demonstrated. Two solvent systems (NMP and toluene) were shown to be suitable for successful self-assembly of SWCNT SWCNT junctions and large area (> 900 μm2) SWCNT networks, characterised extensively by AFM. Whilst agglomeration and rebundling affected the morphology of assemblies in the NMP system, the use of poly(9,9-di-n-dodecylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl) to stabilise SWCNT dispersion in toluene maintained SWCNT individualisation, resulting in highly angular SWCNT islands and networks. However, in spite of clear demonstration over angular control for bis-SWCNT junctions, only one example of a higher multiplicity junction was observed, and possible explanations as to the limiting factor(s), along with avenues for further investigative work, are offered.
