In the developing world, a substantial revenue ($0.7 billion per annum in Pakistan (Resources & Tel, 2018) while in India $0.6 billion is lost due to WBDs per year (Pathak, 2015) is spent, by citizens as well as the state, on the treatment of avoidable Water Borne Diseases (WBD), which is often far greater than the investment required to improve water quality. Many agencies like Public Health Engineering, WASA, PCSIR, PCRWR etc. are carrying out water quality tests regularly and publish their findings periodically. However, none of these studies, so far, have included the disease incidence, direct and indirect costs borne by the citizens as well as the state, due to poor water quality and poor hygiene practices such as environmental hygiene, personal hygiene, water and food hygiene. From the result analysis of E.Coli, Total Fecal Coliform Bacteria (TFCB) and Total Plate Count (TPC) Tests it was found that only 5.13 % of samples of water were contaminated with E.Coli and TFCB but from the surveys it was concluded that the disease incidence is more in the study area

With both foodborne illness and food spoilage detrimentally impacting human health and the economy, there is growing interest in the development of in situ sensors that offer real-time monitoring of food quality within enclosed food packages. While oligonucleotide-based fluorescent sensors have illustrated significant promise, the development of such on-food sensors requires consideration towards sensing-relevant fluorescence properties of target food products – information that has not yet been reported. To address this need, comprehensive fluorescence profiles for various contamination-prone food products are established in this study across several wavelengths and timepoints. The intensity of these food backgrounds is further contextualized to biomolecule-mediated sensing using overlaid fluorescent oligonucleotide arrays, which offer perspective towards the viability of distinct wavelengths and fluorophores for in situ food monitoring. Results show that biosensing in the Cy3 range is optimal for all tested foods, with the Cy5 range offering comparable performance with meat products specifically. Moreover, recognizing that mass fabrication of on-food sensors requires rapid and simple deposition of sensing agents onto packaging substrates, RNA-cleaving fluorescent nucleic acid probes are successfully deposited via microcontact printing for the first time. Direct incorporation onto food packaging yields cost-effective sensors with performance comparable to ones produced using conventional deposition strategies.

As a multi-beneficial amendment, biochar is very useful to be applied for improving soil health and crop productivity. Therefore, this study was carried out to assess the influence of wood biochar and mineral nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertilisers viz, [(control; 100% NPK (120:90:60 kg ha−1); 75% NPK + 5 tonne biochar; 50% NPK + 10 tonne biochar; 25% NPK + 15 tonne biochar and 20 tonne biochar ha−1)] on wheat yield and soil properties under different management practices [(raised bed (more than 30 cm above the ground) and flat-bed)]. Split plot two factors randomised completed block (RCB) design with three replications were used where management practices were placed to main plot, while treatments were assigned to subplots. Maximum spike length, grain per spike, 1000 grain weight, grain and biological yield were obtained with application of 75% NPK + 5 tonne biochar ha−1 under both raised and flat-bed, which were statistically at par to 50% NPK + 10 tonne biochar ha−1. The grain and biological yield observed at 75% NPK + 5 tonne biochar and 50% NPK + 10 tonne biochar ha−1 were significantly higher than that of 20 tonne biochar ha−1. However, maximum soil organic matter, extractable P and K contents with slight increases in soil pH and EC was observed at 20 tonne biochar ha−1. Moreover, almost all agronomic parameters were significantly better in raised bed compared to flat-bed sowing. Hence, the present study suggested that 75% NPK + 5 tonne biochar ha−1 is suitable for improving wheat yield and soil properties.

Nonspecific binding is a significant challenge associated with biosensors in complex food textures. To overcome this, we have developed LISzymes, which are DNAzymes incorporated in lubricant-infused surfaces (LISs). Using milk as a complex background matrix, we show that LISzyme biosensors are significantly more effective in preventing nonspecific binding compared to other commonly used "blocking" methods. The use of lubricant infusion to treat sensing surfaces results in a 4-fold increase in the signal-to-noise ratio obtained with the DNAzyme with respect to untreated surfaces, when detecting the presence of specific bacteria in milk. This is a striking improvement upon previous DNAzyme sensors. Engineered surfaces that repel pathogens are of great interest due to their role in mitigating the spread of infectious diseases. A robust, universal, and scalable omniphobic spray coating with excellent repellency against water, oil, and pathogens is presented. The coating is substrate-independent and relies on hierarchically structured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microparticles, decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Wettability studies reveal the relationship between surface texturing of micro- and/or nano-hierarchical structures and the omniphobicity of the coating. Studies of pathogen transfer with bacteria and viruses reveal that an uncoated contaminated glove transfers pathogens to50 subsequent surfaces, while a coated glove picks up 10

A field trial was performed to study the effect of zinc (Zn) and sulfur (S) on yield and uptake by wheat crop at research farm, the University of Agriculture (34° 1′ 2″ N, 71° 28′ 5″ E,) Peshawar, Pakistan during 2019–2020. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized complete block design (RCBD) with factorial arrangement and was replicated three times. Four Zn levels (0, 5, 10, and 15 kg Zn ha−1) and four S levels (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg S ha−1) were used. Wheat plant biomass, grain yield and straw yield were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) affected by different levels of Zn and S. Plant biomass (8514 kg ha−1), grain yield (3887 kg ha−1) and straw yield (4531 kg ha−1) were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) greater with combine application of Zn at 15 kg ha−1 and S at 60 kg ha−1. The interaction (Zn x S) was found significant for all the above-mentioned parameters including S and Zn content in plant and post-harvest soil. It can be concluded that application of Zn at 15 kg ha−1 and S at 60 kg ha−1 has the potential to enhance wheat yield and yield components in the prevailing soil and environmental condition.

Various fields within biomedical engineering have been afforded rapid scientific advancement through the incorporation of microfluidics. As literature surrounding biological systems become more comprehensive and many microfluidic platforms show potential for commercialization, the development of representative fluidic systems has become more intricate. This has brought increased scrutiny towards the material properties of microfluidic substrates. Thermoplastics have been highlighted as a promising material, given their material adaptability and commercial compatibility. This review provides a comprehensive discussion surrounding recent developments pertaining to thermoplastic microfluidic device fabrication. Existing and emerging approaches related to both microchannel fabrication and device assembly are highlighted, with consideration towards how specific approaches induce physical and/or chemical properties that are optimally suited for relevant real-world applications.

Thrombus formation and infections caused by bacterial adhesion are the most common causes of failure in blood-contacting medical devices. Reducing interaction of pathogens by using repellent surfaces has proven to be a successful strategy in preventing device failure. However, designing scale-up methodologies to create large scale repellent surfaces remains challenging. To address this need, we have created an all-polymeric lubricant-infused system using an industrially viable swelling-coagulation solvent (S-C) method. This induces hierarchically structured micro/nano features onto the surface, enabling improved lubricant-infusion. Poly(3,3,3 - trifluoropropylmethylsiloxane) (PTFS) was used as the lubricant of choice, a previously unexplored omniphobic non-volatile silicone oil. This resulted in all-polymeric liquid-infused surfaces that are transparent and flexible with long-term stability. Repellent properties have been demonstrated using human whole blood and methicillin-resistant Staphyloccus aureus (MRSA) bacteria matrices, with lubricated surfaces showing 93% reduction in blood stains and 96.7% reduction in bacterial adherence. The developed material has the potential to prevent blood and pathogenic contamination for a range of biomedical devices within healthcare settings.

A field experiment was performed at Research Farm of the University of Agriculture Peshawar, Pakistan to evaluate the effect of biochar on soil and plant nitrogen and yielding parameters of mung bean. The experiment was performed in randomize complete block design with split plot arrangement with four replications. Area of each experimental unit was 10.5 m2 and was applied with biochar at the rate of 0, 20, and 40 t ha-1 along with full and half levels of P and K i-e., (90 kg P, 60 kg K ha-1 and 45 kg P, 30 kg K ha-1). Nitrogen was applied to all the experimental units uniformly @ 25 kg N ha-1. The data showed that all of the analyzed parameters were significantly influenced with various biochar levels except fresh and dry weight of nodules. With full and half dose of P and K application, soil total N and soil organic matter were found significant with an increase of 16% and 7% as compared to half dose. With application of various levels of biochar, a significant increase was recorded in most of the parameters. Data regarding Soil N and soil O.M were found significantly enhanced at 40 t ha-1 with values of 0.15% and 2.64% which were 200% and 94% higher as compared to 0 t ha-1 biochar applications. Other parameters like 1000 grain weight, biological yield (fresh and dry), plant N and number of nodules were significantly affected with 20 t ha-1 biochar application which were increased by 20 %, 33%, 21% and 21% as compared to control. Combined application of P&K and biochar significantly affected soil total nitrogen i-e., 0.16% at (full×40 t ha-1) and nodulation number i-e., 36 at (half×20 t ha-1). It was concluded that biochar application @ 20 t ha-1 along with half levels of P and K, proved the best treatments combination for most of the plant parameters and hence they are recommended.

The surface fouling of biomedical devices has been an ongoing issue in healthcare. Bacterial and blood adhesion in particular, severely impede the performance of such tools, leading to poor patient outcomes. Various structural and chemical modifications have been shown to reduce fouling, but all existing strategies lack the combination of physical, chemical, and economic traits necessary for widespread use. Herein, a lubricant infused, hierarchically micro- and nanostructured polydimethylsiloxane surface is presented. The surface is easy to produce and exhibits the high flexibility and optical transparency necessary for incorporation into various biomedical tools. Tests involving two clinically relevant, priority pathogens show up to a 98.5% reduction in the biofilm formation of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. With blood, the surface reduces staining by 95% and suppresses thrombin generation to background levels. Furthermore, the surface shows applicability within applications such as catheters, extracorporeal circuits, and microfluidic devices, through its effectiveness in dynamic conditions. The perfusion of bacterial media shows up to 96.5% reduction in bacterial adhesion. Similarly, a 95.8% reduction in fibrin networks is observed following whole blood perfusion. This substrate stands to hold high applicability within biomedical systems as a means to prevent fouling, thus improving performance.

Since their discovery almost three decades ago, DNAzymes have been used extensively in biosensing. Depending on the type of DNAzyme being used, these functional oligonucleotides can act as molecular recognition elements within biosensors, offering high specificity to their target analyte, or as reporters capable of transducing a detectable signal. Several parameters need to be considered when designing a DNAzyme-based biosensor. In particular, given that many of these biosensors immobilize DNAzymes onto a sensing surface, selecting an appropriate immobilization strategy is vital. Suboptimal immobilization can result in both DNAzyme detachment and poor accessibility toward the target, leading to low sensing accuracy and sensitivity. Various approaches have been employed for DNAzyme immobilization within biosensors, ranging from amine and thiol-based covalent attachment to non-covalent strategies involving biotin-streptavidin interactions, DNA hybridization, electrostatic interactions, and physical entrapment. While the properties of each strategy inform its applicability within a proposed sensor, the selection of an appropriate strategy is largely dependent on the desired application. This is especially true given the diverse use of DNAzyme-based biosensors for the detection of pathogens, metal ions, and clinical biomarkers. In an effort to make the development of such sensors easier to navigate, this paper provides a comprehensive review of existing immobilization strategies, with a focus on their respective advantages, drawbacks, and optimal conditions for use. Next, common applications of existing DNAzyme-based biosensors are discussed. Last, emerging and future trends in the development of DNAzyme-based biosensors are discussed, and gaps in existing research worthy of exploration are identified.

Microfluidics is an emerging and multidisciplinary field that is of great interest to manufacturers in medicine, biotechnology, and chemistry, as it provides unique tools for the development of point-of-care diagnostics, organs-on-chip systems, and biosensors. Polymeric microfluidics, unlike glass and silicon, offer several advantages such as low-cost mass manufacturing and a wide range of beneficial material properties, which make them the material of choice for commercial applications and high-throughput systems. Among polymers used for the fabrication of microfluidic devices, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) still remains the most widely used material in academia due to its advantageous properties, such as excellent transparency and biocompatibility. However, commercialization of PDMS has been a challenge mostly due to the high cost of the current fabrication strategies. Moreover, specific surface modification and functionalization steps are required to tailor the surface chemistry of PDMS channels (e.g. biomolecule immobilization, surface hydrophobicity and antifouling properties) with respect to the desired application. While significant research has been reported in the field of PDMS microfluidics, functionalization of PDMS surfaces remains a critical step in the fabrication process that is difficult to navigate. This review first offers a thorough illustration of existing fabrication methods for PDMS-based microfluidic devices, providing several recent advancements in this field with the aim of reducing the cost and time for mass production of these devices. Next, various conventional and emerging approaches for engineering the surface chemistry of PDMS are discussed in detail. We provide a wide range of functionalization techniques rendering PDMS microchannels highly biocompatible for physical or covalent immobilization of various biological entities while preventing non-specific interactions.

Boron (B) deficiency is a widespread problem in alkaline soils which affects yield and quality of potato but is often ignored by the growers. That’s why, we compared the impact of different methods of boron application (foliar spray, fertigation and soil dressing) along with control on boron use efficiency (BUE), quality and yield of potato in alkaline soils. Boron (0.5 kg ha-1) applied as a foliar spray had significantly increased plant height, tuber per plant, tuber volume and enhanced the quality in terms of vitamin C, starch and B content of potato compared to other methods. Moreover, foliar applied B significantly improved B uptake and it use efficiency over other application methods. B concentration in tubers were strongly correlated with vitamin C and starch contents. The application methods were ranked as foliar spray>fertigation>soil dressing in term of their effectiveness towards potato yield and quality improvement. Thus, for optimum production of good quality potato, B should be applied as foliar spray at the rate of 0.5 kg B ha-1 in existing agro-climatic conditions.

In calcareous soils, wheat productivity is much lower due to improper nutrient management, especially phosphorus (P). Therefore, this study was conducted to manage P availability from various organic (Control, FYM and Sugar cane straw applied at the rate of 10 ton ha−1) and inorganic (Control, 100% rock phosphate (RP), 50% acidulated RP, 100% acidulated RP, single super phosphate (SSP) and diammonium phosphate (DAP)) sources applied at the rate of 90 kg P2O5 ha−1 in calcareous soil while using wheat as test crop. When averaged across the organic sources, SSP performed better in emergence m−2 (126), tillers m−2 (431), spikes m−2 (419), grains spikes−1 (61), plant height (95.1 cm), 1000-GW (40 g), biological yield (11,023 kg ha−1), grain yield (4022 kg ha−1), phosphorus use efficiency (10.5%), phosphorus in leaves at tillering (2.63 mg kg−1) and anthesis stage (2.50 mg kg−1), soil P at heading (1.73 mg kg−1) and post-harvest stage (1.56 mg kg−1) compared to the rest of the mineral sources. Similarly, among the organic sources, FYM performed better than others for all tested traits. Integration of inorganic P sources with organic manures further improved crop performance and post-harvest soil P content. Therefore, using 10 tons FYM ha−1 in integration to SSP or 100% acidulated RP at the rate of 90 kg P2O5 ha−1 is recommended for ensuring optimum wheat productivity under calcareous soils.

As a result of their favorable physical and chemical characteristics, thermoplastics have garnered significant interest in the area of microfluidics. The moldable nature of these inexpensive polymers enables easy fabrication, while their durability and chemical stability allow for resistance to high shear stress conditions and functionalization, respectively. This review provides a comprehensive examination several commonly used thermoplastic polymers in the microfluidics space including poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), cyclic olefin polymer (COP) and copolymer (COC), polycarbonates (PC), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), polystyrene (PS), poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), polylactic acid (PLA), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), and polyester. We describe various biofunctionalization strategies applied within thermoplastic microfluidic platforms and their resultant applications. Lastly, emerging technologies with a focus on applying recently developed microfluidic and biofunctionalization strategies into thermoplastic systems are discussed.

A research study was established at the research farm of the University of Agriculture, Peshawar during winter 2018&ndash, 2019. Commercial biochars were given to the experimental site from 2014 to summer 2018 and received 0.95, 130 and 60 tons ha&minus, 1 of biochar by various treatments viz., (Biochar1) BC1, (Biochar2) BC2, (Biochar3) BC3 and (Biochar4) BC4, respectively. This piece of work was conducted within the same study to find the long-term influence of biochar on the fertility of the soil, fixation of N2, as well as the yie1d of chickpea under a mung&ndash, chickpea cropping system. A split plot arrangement was carried out by RCBD (Randomized Complete Block Design) to evaluate the study. Twenty-five kilograms of N ha&minus, 1 were given as a starter dosage to every plot. Phosphorous and potassium were applied at two levels (half (45:30 kg ha&minus, 1) and full (90:60 kg ha&minus, 1) recommended doses) to each of the four biochar treatments. The chickpea crop parameters measured were the numbers and masses of the nodules, N2 fixation and grain yield. Soil parameters recorded were Soil Organic Matter (SOM), total N and mineral N. The aforementioned soil parameters were recorded after harvesting. The results showed that nodulation in chickpea, grain yield and nutrient uptake were significantly enhanced by phosphorous and potassium mineral fertilizers. The application of biochar 95 tons ha&minus, 1 significantly enhanced number of nodules i-e (122), however statistically similar response in terms of nodules number was also noted with treatment of 130 tons ha&minus, 1. The results further revealed a significant difference in terms of organic matter (OM) (%) between the half and full mineral fertilizer treatments. With the application of 130 tons ha&minus, 1 of biochar, the OM enhanced from 1.67% in the control treatment, to 2.59%. However, total and mineral nitrogen were not statistically enhanced by the mineral fertilizer treatment. With regard to biochar treatments, total and mineral N enhanced when compared with the control treatment. The highest total N of 0.082% and mineral nitrogen of 73 mg kg&minus, 1 in the soil were recorded at 130 tons ha&minus, 1 of biochar, while the lowest total N (0.049%) and mineral nitrogen (54 mg kg&minus, 1) in the soil were recorded in the control treatment. The collaborative influence of mineral fertilizers and biochars was found to be generally non-significant for most of the soil and plant parameters. It could be concluded that the aforementioned parameters were greater for treatments receiving biochar at 95 tons or more per hectare over the last several years, and that the combination of lower doses of mineral fertilizers further improved the performance of biochar.

Recent studies have shown a correlation between elevated interleukin 6 (IL-6) concentrations and the risk of respiratory failure in COVID-19 patients. Therefore, detection of IL-6 at low concentrations permits early diagnosis of worst-case outcome in viral respiratory infections. Here, a versatile biointerface is presented that eliminates nonspecific adhesion and thus enables immunofluorescence detection of IL-6 in whole human plasma or whole human blood during coagulation, down to a limit of detection of 0.5 pg mL-1 . The sensitivity of the developed lubricant-infused biosensor for immunofluorescence assays in detecting low molecular weight proteins such as IL-6 is facilitated by i) producing a bioink in which the capture antibody is functionalized by an epoxy-based silane for covalent linkage to the fluorosilanized surface and ii) suppressing nonspecific adhesion by patterning the developed bioink into a lubricant-infused coating. The developed biosensor addresses one of the major challenges for biosensing in complex fluids, namely nonspecific adhesion, therefore paving the way for highly sensitive biosensing in complex fluids.

Spinal fusion is one of the most common procedures performed in spine surgery. As rates of spinal fusion continue to increase, rates of complications such as nonunions continue to increase as well. Current evidence supporting the use of electrical stimulation to promote fusion is inconclusive. This review aimed to determine if postoperative electrical stimulation is more efficacious than no stimulation or placebo in promoting radiographic fusion in patients undergoing spinal fusion. We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), EMBASE, CINAHL and MEDLINE from date of inception to current. Ongoing clinical trials were also identified and reference lists of included studies were manually searched for relevant articles. Two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias. Data were pooled using the Mantel-Haenszel method. Trialists were contacted for any missing or incomplete data. Of 1184 articles screened, 7 studies were eligible for final inclusion (n = 941). A total of 487 patients received postoperative electrical stimulation and 454 patients received control or sham stimulation. All evidence was of moderate quality. Electrical stimulation (pulsed electromagnetic fields, direct current, and capacitive coupling) increased the odds of a successful fusion by 2.5-fold relative to control (OR = 2.53, 95% CI 1.86 to 3.43, p

Postaxial Polydactyly (PAP) is characterized by fifth digit duplication in hands and/or feet. Two types of PAP including PAP-A, representing the development of well-formed extra digit, and PAP-B, representing the presence of rudimentary fifth digit, have been described. Both isolated and syndromic forms of PAP have been reported. Isolated forms of PAP usually segregate as an autosomal dominant trait and to date four loci have been identified. In the present study, we have described mapping of the first locus of autosomal recessive PAP type A on chromosome 13q13.3–13q21.2 in a consanguineous Pakistani family. In family with autosomal dominant forms of postaxial polydactyly, most of the affected individuals exhibit features representing type A PAP (Zhao et al.,2002; Galjaardet et al.,2003). In the respected family mapped on chromosome 13q13.3– 13q21.2, affected individuals showed the additional features of postaxial polydactyly.Several locus of causative genes are involved in this disease. To check the specified locus we use several microsatellite markers (D13S1246, D13S218, D13S1288, D13S1233, D13S263, D13S1312, D13S153, D13S328, D13S119, D13S632, D13S889,D4S90, D4S2936, D4S111, D4S43, D4S16114, D4S95, D4S127, D4S126, D4S179, D4S432, D4S2957, D4S431, D4S2366, D4S2935, D4S3007, D4S412, D4S3023, D4S2285 ). All the affected individuals showed no homozygosity. Genetic mapping of all the affected individuals showed that noval genes are responsible for the disease. In future, we will work on and try to find out the causative genes.

In calcareous soils, phosphorus (P) availability to plant is impaired due to the formation of insoluble complexes with calcium and magnesium. Therefore, this study was executed to compare the P use efficiency (PUE) of four different P sources [rock phosphate (RP), acidulated rock phosphate (ARP), single super phosphate (SSP) and di ammonium phosphate (DAP)] alone or pre-treated with organic amendments (farm yard manure (FYM) enriched compost, simple compost and humic acid (HA)) along with control in maize crop under calcareous soils. All treatments irrespective of P sources received 90 kg P2O5 ha−1. Phosphorus application regardless of its sources and combination with organic amendments significantly improved maize growth, yield as well as P uptake and PUE. Rock phosphate when applied alone was recorded inferior but its performance significantly improved with compost or its pre-addition with FYM and HA, that further enhanced upon acidulation. Maize grain yield increased by 21, 22.2, 67.9 and 94% with RP, ARP, ARP enriched compost and ARP+ compost respectively, over control. Similarly, PUE of DAP improved from 31.7 to 43.1 and 39 with sample and enriched compost correspondingly. Post-harvest soil and grain P were at par for SSP, ARP and DAP alone or in conjugation with organic amendments when averaged across the amendments. These results suggested that pretreatment of P sources with organic amendments is an economical and more feasible approach to improve maize yield and PUE. Moreover, on-farm acidulation of RP may give at par results with SSP and DAP with cheaper rate and hence recommended for P management in maize in alkaline calcareous soils.

Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) deficiency is a major yield limiting factor across the globe and their proper management plays a vital role in optimizing crop yield. This field experiment was conducted to assess the impact of soil and plant nitrogen N and P ratio on the growth and yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in alkaline calcareous soil. The study consisted of various levels of nitrogen (0, 40, 80, and 160 kg ha−1 as urea) and phosphorus (0, 30, 60, and 90 kg P2O5 ha−1 as diammonium phosphate), and was carried out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with factorial arrangement having three replications. The result showed that the addition of 160 kg N ha−1 significantly improved biological yield (10,052 kg ha−1), grain weight (3120 kg ha−1), chlorophyll content at tillering stage soil plant analysis development (SPAD) value (35.38), N uptake in straw (33.42 kg ha−1), and K uptake in straw (192 kg ha−1) compared to other N levels. In case of P, 90 kg P2O5 ha−1 had resulted maximum biological yield (9852 kg ha−1), grain yield (3663 kg ha−1), chlorophyll content at tillering stage (SPAD value 34.36), P (6.68 mg kg−1) and K (171 kg ha−1) uptake in straw. The sole use of N and P have positively influenced the biological and grain yield but their interaction didn’t response to biological yield. The present study reveals that SPAD value (chlorophyll meter) is the better choice for determining plant N and P concentrations to estimate the yield potential.

An experiment was performed to investigate the effect of integrated phosphorus management with previously applied biochar at the University of Agriculture, Peshawar during 2018–2019. The treatments comprised of two levels of biochar (10 tons ha−1 and no biochar) and three sources of P {Farmyard manure, poultry manure, and an inorganic source di-ammonium phosphate}. The phosphorous sources were added in such a manner that 100, 75 and 50% of P were received from the organic sources and the remaining were obtained from the inorganic source and vice versa @ 100 kg P ha−1. This experiment was much needed for our conditions to formulate the recommended organic and mineral fertilizers for our soil, because our famers uses mineral fertilizers without any specific calculation and time which degrade and erode the soil day by day. The experiment was designed in RCB and repeated three times. The size of plot was kept as 21 m2 with strong ridges around each plot. Biological yield (7829 kg ha−1), grain yield (3200 kg ha−1), soil organic matter (1.71%), soil P content (4.28 mg kg−1), straw P content (0.07%) and grain P content (0.21%) were significantly greater with 10 tons ha−1 of residual biochar treatment. However, more thousand grain weight (52.3 g), soil organic matter (2.05%), straw P content (0.096%) and grain P content (0.25%) were significantly enhanced with the application of 100% P from PM only whereas, biological yield (9789 kg ha−1) and grain yield (4334 kg ha−1) were enhanced with application of P as 50% from PM and 50% from DAP. Soil phosphorus was significantly increased with the application of FYM. These results suggested that addition of biochar at the rate of 10 tons ha−1 in the previous season along with 100% P from PM in the current season improved yield and yield components and soil physico-chemical properties and is therefore recommended for Peshawar valley.

Postaxial Polydactyly (PAP) is characterized by fifth digit duplication in hands and/or feet. Two types of PAP including PAP-A, representing the development of well-formed extra digit, and PAP-B, representing the presence of rudimentary fifth digit, have been described. Both isolated and syndromic forms of PAP have been reported. Isolated forms of PAP usually segregate as an autosomal dominant trait and to date four loci have been identified. In the present study, we have described mapping of the first locus of autosomal recessive PAP type A on chromosome 13q13.3–13q21.2 in a consanguineous Pakistani family. In family with autosomal dominant forms of postaxial polydactyly most of the affectedindividuals exhibit features representing type A PAP. In the respected family mapped on chromosome 13q13.3–13q21.2, affected individuals showed additional feature of post axial polydactyly. Several locus of causative genes are involved in this disease. Tocheck the specified locus, we use several microsatellite markers (D13S1246, D13S218, D13S1288, D13S1233, D13S263, D13S1312, D13S153, D13S328, D13S119, D13S632, D13S889, D4S90, D4S2936, D4S111, D4S43, D4S16114, D4S95, D4S127, D4S126, D4S179, D4S432, D4S2957, D4S431, D4S2366, D4S2935, D4S3007, D4S412, D4S3023, D4S2285). All the affected individuals showing no homozygosity. Genetic mapping of all the affected individuals showed that novel genes are responsible for the disease. In future we will work on and try to find out the causative genes
