Exurbia (rural low-density residential development) is one of the fastest growing types of land-use and can result in habitat fragmentation and loss of farmland. Local zoning restrictions and farmland protection are the most common ways of controlling low-density development in rural areas. While planners have recognized the utility of landuse change models for decision-making, most models do not effectively forecast exurban expansion. To rectify this problem, a spatially explicit model called UPlan that projects exurban development was adapted for Sonoma County California, where an estimated 27% of the people live at low densities (< 1 unit/0.8 ha [2 acres]). The projected pattern and extent of development resulting from three alternate agricultural land protection policies were compared, and the likely impact on natural areas and farmland was assessed. The results reveal that if current farmland is not protected from exurban development, 73% of all Sonoma County’s remaining core forest could be comprised of edge habitat (within 500m of development) by 2010, and as much as 12% of existing farmland will be developed. We demonstrate that some farmland protection policies can have unintended consequences for forest conservation due to increases in exurban residential development. This research represents a real-world application of a new model that can assist planners to assess the impact of zoning and subdivision controls on land conservation where exurban expansion is a concern.

Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS) is an acute viral disease leads to great losses in farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The disease has three different clinical forms including acute, chronic and nervous with different clinical and necropsy signs. This research was conducted in Iran from 2013 to 2015 in 2641 rainbow trout farms (Hatcheries and fish farms) in order to describe the gross pathology pattern of this disease. The observed signs in the present study were categorized into the five different groups including group 1 with general signs of septicemia, group 2 with hemorrhagic signs, group 3 with nervous signs, group 4 with anemia signs and group 5 with high mortality. All infected farms were inspected and clinical and necropsy signs and mortality rate were recorded based on the designated forms and registered in Geographical Information System (GIS) of Iran veterinary organization (the electronic system for surveillance and monitoring of animals). Results of each year were evaluated descriptively and analytically using chi square test. The dominant group based on the registered signes during 3 years of survey was mortality in 2013, general signs of septicemia in 2014, and general signs of septicemia in 2015. The observed frequency of signs were highest for the general septicemia group and lowest for the anemia group during three years of study. According to the results of the present study, it seems that VHS gross pathology pattern in Iran has been changed from acute manifestation to the chronic form. As the general signs common to a number of diseases, it is so important for clinicians to consider VHS in their differential diagnosis lists.

- Abstract
An exploratory analysis is conducted across 3 years on school exclusionary disciplinary practices from all 56 high schools in one district. Using geographical information systems mapping and other statistical analysis, this study analyzes how socioeconomic status, racial composition, and geographical region relate to a school's usage of exclusionary discipline. Results show that opportunity transfer, suspension, and expulsion rates vary within the district with the lowest exclusionary practices in high income areas and highest in low income areas. Findings suggest that suspensions are correlated with opportunity transfers and expulsions. However, there is no linear relation between opportunity transfers and expulsions. Poverty, student race/ethnic composition at school site, and school year are found to be predictors of exclusionary practices. Implications for future research are considered.

- Abstract
Early childhood educators work with children and families from a range of diverse backgrounds. As society becomes increasingly multiracial, multilingual, and multicultural, so too grows the need for educators' abilities to support children's development by instilling in them the tools they need to live together respectfully and stand up to prejudice. Teachers of young children play a pivotal role in laying this foundation, so they must be prepared to develop environments that are inclusive and respectful to all. Early educators have already adopted multiculturalism and anti-bias curriculum frameworks to address issues of culture and diversity. "Interculturalism" adds a new layer for addressing diversity through its attention to the bi-directionality that is needed in an authentic sharing of cultural contexts. With interculturalism, individuals learn from each other and engage in an ongoing exploration of the historical and cultural contexts that influence individual development. Through "intercultural" activities and dialogue, the children and teacher develop a full and rich understanding of how each individual is unique and special and contributes to the diverse fabric of society. The goals of this article are to: (1) demonstrate why there is a critical need for intercultural experiences in the early years; (2) propose important components of teacher preparation programs to provide intercultural tools; and (3) suggest practical ways teachers can apply the intercultural approach in their classrooms.

Background & Aims: Accurate knowledge about gestational age is very important in taking decision for pregnancy management and termination. According to Naegele’s rule the length of pregnancy is 280 days after LMP and according to studies performed in Harvard University, duration of pregnancy in nullipare and multipare women has been respectively 288 and 283 days and according to a study performed in Oxford University it is influenced by factors such as age, parity, some illnesses and personal habits. Materials and methods: In this retrospective study, all laboring women admitted in Ahwaz Medical University Hospitals in 2007 including 689 nulliparas and 774 multiparas with true labor pain and reliable LMP were studied for pregnancy duration. Data were analyzed by SPSS software. Results: Mean duration of pregnancy was 273.17, 274.31and 273.77 days in nulliparas, multiparas and overall respectively. Parity has no significant association with pregnancy duration. According to the sonography below 26 weeks duration of pregnancy is calculated 270.07 days which had no significant relationship with LMP. Conclusion: According to this study parity has no effect on pregnancy duration. Mean pregnancy duration was shorter comapared to Naegele’s rule and Harvard University studies.

Across three studies, LoBue and DeLoache (2008) provided evidence suggesting that both young children and adults exhibit enhanced visual detection of evolutionarily relevant threat stimuli (as compared with nonthreatening stimuli). A replication of their Experiment 3, conducted by Cramblet Alvarez and Pipitone (2015) as part of the Reproducibility Project: Psychology (RP:P), demonstrated trends similar to those of the original study, but the effect sizes were smaller and not statistically significant. There were, however, some methodological differences (e.g., screen size) and sampling differences (the age of recruited children) between the original study and the RP:P replication study. Additionally, LoBue and DeLoache expressed concern over the choice of stimuli used in the RP:P replication. We sought to explore the possible moderating effects of these factors by conducting two new replications—one using the protocol from the RP:P and the other using a revised protocol. We collected data at four sites, three in Serbia and one in the United States (total N = 553). Overall, participants were not significantly faster at detecting threatening stimuli. Thus, results were not supportive of the hypothesis that visual detection of evolutionarily relevant threat stimuli is enhanced in young children. The effect from the RP:P protocol ( d = −0.10, 95% confidence interval = [−1.02, 0.82]) was similar to the effect from the revised protocol ( d = −0.09, 95% confidence interval = [−0.33, 0.15]), and the results from both the RP:P and the revised protocols were more similar to those found by Cramblet Alvarez and Pipitone than to those found by LoBue and DeLoache.

Replication efforts in psychological science sometimes fail to replicate prior findings. If replications use methods that are unfaithful to the original study or ineffective in eliciting the phenomenon of interest, then a failure to replicate may be a failure of the replication protocol rather than a challenge to the original finding. Formal pre-data collection peer review by experts may address shortcomings and increase replicability rates. We selected 10 replications from the Reproducibility Project: Psychology (RP:P; Open Science Collaboration, 2015) in which the original authors had expressed concerns about the replication designs before data collection and only one of which was “statistically significant” (p < .05). Commenters on RP:P suggested that lack of adherence to expert review and low-powered tests were the reasons that most of these failed to replicate (Gilbert et al., 2016). We revised the replication protocols and received formal peer review prior to conducting new replications. We administered the RP:P and Revised replication protocols in multiple laboratories (Median number of laboratories per original study = XX; Range XX to YY; Median total sample = XX; Range XX to YY) for high-powered tests of each original finding with both protocols. Overall, XX of 10 RP:P protocols and XX of 10 Revised protocols showed significant evidence in the same direction as the original finding (p < .05), compared to an expected XX. The median effect size was [larger/smaller/similar] for Revised protocols (ES = .XX) compared to RP:P protocols (ES = .XX), and [larger/smaller/similar] compared to the original studies (ES = .XX) and [larger/smaller/similar] compared to the original RP:P replications (ES = .XX). Overall, Revised protocols produced [much larger/somewhat larger/similar] effect sizes compared to RP:P protocols (ES = .XX). We also elicited peer beliefs about the replications through prediction markets and surveys of a group of researchers in psychology. The peer researchers predicted that the Revised protocols would [decrease/not affect/increase] the replication rate, [consistent with/not consistent with] the observed replication results. The results suggest that the lack of replicability of these findings observed in RP:P was [partly/completely/not] due to discrepancies in the RP:P protocols that could be resolved with expert peer review.

We revised the replication protocols and received formal peer review prior to conducting new replications. We administered the RP:P and Revised protocols in multiple laboratories (Median number of laboratories per original study = 6.5; Range 3 to 9; Median total sample = 1279.5; Range 276 to 3512) for high-powered tests of each original finding with both protocols. Overall, Revised protocols produced similar effect sizes as RP:P protocols following the preregistered analysis plan (Δr = .002 or .014, depending on analytic approach). The median effect size for Revised protocols (r = .05) was similar to RP:P protocols (r = .04) and the original RP:P replications (r = .11), and smaller than the original studies (r = .37). The cumulative evidence of original study and three replication attempts suggests that effect sizes for all 10 (median r = .07; range .00 to .15) are 78% smaller on average than original findings (median r = .37; range .19 to .50), with very precisely estimated effects.

- Abstract
The effect from the RP:P protocol (d = −0.10, 95% confidence interval = [−1.02, 0.82]) was similar to the effect from the revised protocol (d = −0.09, 95% confidence interval = [−0.33, 0.15]), and the results from both the RP:P and the revised protocols were more similar to those found by Cramblet Alvarez and Pipitone than to those found by LoBue and DeLoache.

Forty parents of children enrolled in a Spanish Enrichment Program (SEP) at a Southern California university’s children’s center responded to a questionnaire inquiring on their attitudes toward their children learning Spanish, as well as the principles of bilingualism and the instructional use of minority languages with English Language Learners (ELLs). While parents appeared to support the SEP and the tenets of bilingualism, and value their children’s development of bilingual skills, their support for the instructional use of minority languages with ELLs to help these students develop bilingual skills was not as strong. However, notably, a large number of participants were “not sure”.

Introduction: It is well known that neutrons are more effective treatments than photons to treat hypoxic tumors due to the interaction with the nucleus and the production of heavy particles. This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) for the treatment of lung cancer. To this end, neutron dose distributions were calculated in lung tumor volume and peripheral organs at risk (OARs). Material and Methods: Dose distribution to treat lung cancer was calculated by MCNPX code. An elliptical tumor with a volume of 27cm3 was centered in the left lung of the ORNL phantom and was irradiated with neutron spectrums of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and CNEA-MEC. The tumor was loaded with different concentrations of Boron 0, 10, 30, and 60 ppm to evaluate the delivered dose to OARs. Results: Neutron absorbed dose rates in the tumor were 2.2×10-3, 2.6×10-3, 3.4×10-3, and 4.7×10-3 Gy/s for boron concentrations of 0, 10, 30, and 60 ppm, respectively for MIT. Moreover, similar results for CNEAMEC were 1.2×10-3, 1.6×10-3, 2.5×10-3, and 3.7×10-3 Gy/s. The heart absorbed the maximum neutron dose rate of 1.7×10-4 and 1.6×10-4 Gy/s in MIT and CNEA, respectively. For all energy bins of spectrums, the neutrons flux is decreased as it penetrates the lung. Conclusion: An increase in boron concentrations in tumors increases the absorbed doses while deteriorates dose uniformity. The results show that the MIT source is well suited to treat deep lung tumors while maintaining the OARs' dose within the threshold dose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study seeks to understand the effects of service learning on both young children and college students. Subsequently, quantitative and qualitative methods are employed to gain insight into how service learning coupled with a photovoice methodology can provide an empowering pedagogical practice for participants. Through the use of a Qualtrics survey and photovoice methods, this study examines the effects of service learning sampling 25 preschool age children and 39 undergraduate college students. Findings of this study provide an understanding and a platform for young children and college students to share their thoughts on service learning. Through reflection and dialogue from the participants, we begin to understand how alternative methods to education move beyond the realm of the classroom and collectively into the hands of the teacher, young children, and college students.

- Abstract

In order to manage sections of emergency in an effective manner in various levels of headquarters and line, it is critical to have a tool to monitor and evaluate the performance. Thus, present research was developed aiming to evaluate national emergency indexes in medical and educational centers. The statistical society of ore sent research is all educational – medical centers of Kermanshah Medical University and we used census method. Indexes were gathered by means of forms completed in emergencies and analyzed by Spss 21 software and we used descriptive statistics including median and standard deviation. Findings indicate that the minimum rate of the percentage of patients settled during 6 hours is related to Imam Reza Hospital with 76.66 percent and also the minimum rate of the percentage of patients existing the emergency less than 12 hours was related to Mohammadi Kermanshahi Hospital equal to 85 percent. The minimum rate of unsuccessful CPR is related to Motazedi Hospital equal to zero percentage. The maximum rate of leaving with personal responsibility is related to Kermanshah’s Imam Khomeini Hospital in rate of 18.94 percent. The minimum median of triage time duration in levels one, four and five are related to Motazedi Hospital and to Taleghani Hospital in levels two and three. Considering the fact that emergency is first level of patients’ contact with the hospital, exact evaluation of emergency indexes, specially important indexes such as percentage of settled patients during 6 hours, percentage of patients leaving the emergency under 12 hours, and the triage time duration median are essential. Urban models useful in transportation planning are reviewed, focusing especially on ones that are based on geographic information system (GIS) software. Then UPlan, a simple model written by the authors in the ArcView GIS, is described. Several different applications of UPlan are outlined, involving transportation planning and analysis of the growthinducing effects of new facilities, to demonstrate its use. Such models are coming into use for National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 assessments and for joint land use and transportation planning.

Various combinations of advanced public transportation systems (APTS), including advanced transit information, demand responsive transit, and personal rapid transit, are evaluated by applying traditional travel and emissions criteria as well as consumer welfare and equity criteria. A state-of-the-practice regional travel demand model is used to simulate the travel effects of the APTS technologies in the Sacramento region for the year 2015. A method of obtaining consumer welfare is applied to the mode choice models in the travel model. It was found that APTS technologies, which were simulated in this study to act as feeder service for light rail and bus transit, did not significantly reduce congestion and emissions in the region. This was primarily because the Sacramento region lacks extensive penetration by light rail and bus service. The consumer welfare evaluation, however, showed that all the APTS technology scenarios yielded an economic benefit and were generally equitable even when capital, operation, and maintenance costs were included in the analysis. Further, the analysis showed that advanced transit information service alone produced the greatest increase in consumer welfare. The total yearly difference in benefits among the scenarios would be significant. Thus, it is concluded that the method of obtaining consumer welfare used in this study is a useful analytical tool for identifying optimal bundles of APTS technologies.

Methamphetamine (MA) use disorders are pervasive global social problems that produce large medical and public health burdens. Abnormalities in pituitary hormonal regulation have been observed in preclinical models of substance abuse and in human substance abusers. They have, however, not been studied before in MA-dependent human subjects. To determine if MA-dependent research volunteers differ from healthy control subjects in plasma levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, or prolactin, or in pituitary dopamine D(2) receptor availability during early abstinence from MA.MA-dependent subjects (N = 31), who were not seeking treatment, resided on an inpatient ward for up to 5 weeks. Abstinence was confirmed by daily urine drug screening. Venous blood was sampled for plasma hormone levels, and positron emission tomography with [(18)F]fallypride was performed to determine dopamine D(2) receptor availability during the first week of abstinence. Venous blood was sampled again for hormone levels during the fourth week of abstinence. Matched healthy volunteers (N = 23) participated as a comparison group.MA-dependent and healthy comparison subjects did not differ in plasma ACTH or cortisol levels, but had an elevated plasma prolactin at both the first week and fourth week of abstinence. There was no group difference in pituitary dopamine D(2) receptor availability.MA-dependent individuals have abnormalities in prolactin regulation, which is not likely due to alterations in pituitary dopamine D(2) receptor availability.MA dependence is associated with elevated prolactin levels, which may contribute to medical comorbidity in afflicted individuals.

A design improvement to the VKU-7785E1 klystron electron gun has been successfully implemented which reduces the frequency of grid (cathode to focus electrode) voltage arcs. The benefits of implementing the improved gun into production has been an increase in manufacturing yield at CPI, dramatic reduction in in-coming test time by the systems integrator, and dramatic reduction of field returns, resulting in improved on-time delivery of the amplifier systems to the end user.
