11. StainGAN: Stain Style Transfer for Digital Histological Images

Abstract

Digitized Histological diagnosis is in increasing demand. However, color variations due to various factors are imposing obstacles to the diagnosis process. The problem of stain color variations is a well-defined problem with many proposed solutions. Most of these solutions are highly dependent on a reference template slide. We propose a deep-learning solution inspired by CycleGANs that is trained end-to-end, eliminating the need for an expert to pick a representative reference slide. Our approach showed superior results quantitatively and qualitatively against the state of the art methods (10% improvement visually using SSIM). We further validated our method on a clinical use-case, namely Breast Cancer tumor classification, showing 12% increase in AUC. Abstract

Oxygen-containing heterocycles are largely distributed in natural and synthetic compounds. Coumarins are among the most famous heterocycles which possess one oxygen atom in their rings. Coumarins are classified as multifunctional scaffold and are used as anti-oxidant reagents, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-HIV active, analgesic, anti-histaminic, insecticides, dyes, herbicides, sensitizers, perfumes, cosmetics and food additives. Due to their diverse applications in industrial and pharmaceutical fields, many chemists have given significant interest to these compounds. Herein, the review highlights various methods for the synthesis and interactions of coumarin moiety as one of the most efficient categories of heterocycles.

21. A new operational matrix based on Bernoulli polynomials

Abstract

In this research, the Bernoulli polynomials are introduced. The properties of these polynomials are employed to construct the operational matrices of integration together with the derivative and product. These properties are then utilized to transform the differential equation to a matrix equation which corresponds to a system of algebraic equations with unknown Bernoulli coefficients. This method can be used for many problems such as differential equations, integral equations and so on. Numerical examples show the method is computationally simple and also illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of the method.

Abstract

Background: The optimal treatment of anastomotic leak after rectal cancer resection is unclear. This worldwide cohort study aimed to provide an overview of four treatment strategies applied. Methods: Patients from 216 centres and 45 countries with anastomotic leak after rectal cancer resection between 2014 and 2018 were included. Treatment was categorized as salvage surgery, faecal diversion with passive or active (vacuum) drainage, and no primary/secondary faecal diversion. The primary outcome was 1-year stoma-free survival. In addition, passive and active drainage were compared using propensity score matching (2: 1). Results: Of 2470 evaluable patients, 388 (16.0 per cent) underwent salvage surgery, 1524 (62.0 per cent) passive drainage, 278 (11.0 per cent) active drainage, and 280 (11.0 per cent) had no faecal diversion. One-year stoma-free survival rates were 13.7, 48.3, 48.2, and 65.4 per cent respectively. Propensity score matching resulted in 556 patients with passive and 278 with active drainage. There was no statistically significant difference between these groups in 1-year stoma-free survival (OR 0.95, 95 per cent c.i. 0.66 to 1.33), with a risk difference of -1.1 (95 per cent c.i. -9.0 to 7.0) per cent. After active drainage, more patients required secondary salvage surgery (OR 2.32, 1.49 to 3.59), prolonged hospital admission (an additional 6 (95 per cent c.i. 2 to 10) days), and ICU admission (OR 1.41, 1.02 to 1.94). Mean duration of leak healing did not differ significantly (an additional 12 (-28 to 52) days). Conclusion: Primary salvage surgery or omission of faecal diversion likely correspond to the most severe and least severe leaks respectively. In patients with diverted leaks, stoma-free survival did not differ statistically between passive and active drainage, although the increased risk of secondary salvage surgery and ICU admission suggests residual confounding.

Abstract

Herein, we describe the synthesis of novel piperidinyl thieno tetrahydroisoquinolines attached or fused to other new heterocycles. The diazotization of the previously synthesized pyrrolyl carbohydrazide 1 followed by several reactions with ethanol, aniline and heterocyclization after boiling in dry xylene under Curtius rearrangement conditions yielded the corresponding carbamate, phenyl urea and pyrazino derivatives 3–5. Furthermore, the condensation of 1 with various aromatic aldehydes and ethyl acetoacetate afforded the consistent Schiff's bases 6a-c and 7. The ring closure of the ethyl butanoate ester 7 furnished pyrazolyl compound 8 after heating in an ethanolic sodium ethoxide solution. Moreover, the nucleophilic addition of the carbohydrazide 1 to carbon disulfide in pyridine produced oxadiazolyl thione 9 which was reacted with ethyl chloroacetate to give ethyl sulfanyl acetate ester 10. The assignments of the chemical structures of these new heterocycles were confirmed by using elemental and spectral analysis. Alternatively, selected compounds were examined for antibacterial and antifungal screening. The results revealed highly promising influences against the nominated pathogenic strains.

Abstract

New pyrazolothienopyrimidines were synthesized. The key intermediate 4-aminothieno[2,3-c]pyrazole-5-carbonitrile 1 was converted to the chloroacetyl amino derivative 2 followed by nucleophilic substitution and Dimorth rearrangement upon treatment with nitrogen nucleophiles to give the pyrimidinones 3a-c. Treatment of 3a with formaldehyde and with triethyl orthoformate afforded the respective tetracyclic derivatives 4 and 5. Condensation of the amino group in the o-aminocarbonitrile 1 with triethyl orthoformate followed by cycloaddition reaction with hydrazine led to the formation of pyrazolothienopyrimidine 8. Compound 8 was used as a synthetic precursor to heterocyclic compounds comprised of pyrazole, triazole, triazine, and triazepine derivatives.

Abstract

In this study, heat transfer in a longitudinal rectangular fin with temperature-dependent thermal properties and internal heat generation is revisited. The advanced heat transfer models have been used to study the effects of thermo-geometric parameters, coefficient of heat transfer, and thermal conductivity parameters on the temperature distribution, heat transfer, and thermal performance of the longitudinal rectangular fin. It is shown that its governing nonlinear differential equation with proper boundary conditions is exactly solvable. With this aim, we reduce the order of the differential equation to first and then convert it into a total differential equation by multiplying by a convenient integrating factor. A full discussion and exact analytical solution in the implicit form is given for further physical interpretation and it is proved that three possible cases may occur: there is no solution to the problem, the solution is unique, or the solutions are dual, depending on the values of the parameters of the model.Key words: exact analytical solution, unique solution, dual solutions, heat transfer analysis, longitudinal fin, temperature-dependent thermal properties, temperature-dependent internal heat generation.Nous revisitons ici le probleme du transfert de chaleur dans une ailette rectangulaire longitudinale avec des proprietes thermiques dependantes de la temperature, avec generation interne de chaleur. Nous utilisons les modeles de pointe pour le transfert de chaleur afin d'etudier les effets des parametres thermo-geometriques, des coefficients de transfert de chaleur et des parametres de conductivite thermique sur la distribution de temperature, le transfert de chaleur et la performance thermique de l'ailette rectangulaire longitudinale. Nous montrons que son equation differentielle directrice non lineaire avec des conditions limites appropriees peut etre solutionnee de facon exacte. A cette fin, nous reduisons d'abord l'ordre de l'equation differentielle et la convertissons en une equation differentielle totale par multiplication avec un facteur d'integration approprie. Abstract

The research conducted an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) field survey, the results revealed that Tanzania is still lagging behind in the ICT sector due to the lack of an internationally connected terrestrial ICT infrastructure; Internet connectivity to the rest of the world is via expensive satellite links, thus leaving the majority of the population unable to access the Internet services due to its high cost. Therefore, an ICT backbone infrastructure is designed that exploits optical DWDM network technology, which un-locks bandwidth bottlenecks and provides higher capacity which will provide ICT services such as Internet, voice, videos and other multimedia interactions at an affordable cost to the majority of the people who live in the urban and rural areas of Tanzania. The research analyses and compares the performance, and system impairments, in a DWDM system at data transmission rates of 2.5 Gb/s and 10 Gb/s per wavelength channel. The simulation results show that a data transmission rate of 2.5 Gb/s can be successfully transmitted over a greater distance than 10 Gb/s with minimum system impairments. Also operating at the lower data rate delivers a good system performance for the required ICT services. A forty-channel DWDM system will provide a bandwidth of 100 Gb/s. A cost analysis demonstrates the economic worth of incorporating existing optical fibre installations into an optical DWDM network for the creation of an affordable ICT backbone infrastructure; this approach is compared with building a completely new optical fibre DWDM network or a SONET/SDH network. The results show that the ICT backbone infrastructure built with existing SSMF DWDM network technology is a good investment, in terms of profitability, even if the Internet charges are reduced to half current rates. The case for building a completely new optical fibre DWDM network or a SONET/SDH network is difficult to justify using current financial data.

Abstract

ONGOING climate change is leading to more extreme weather, which affects agriculture in various ways. In semi-arid regions of the world, and even some humid areas, drought stress is becoming more frequent. Prolonged drought periods lead to severe damages to cultivated plants, which impacts water and food resources. This review investigates how drought stress impacts plants and how management practices can be utilized to reduce the negative effects. Special attention is given to nano-farming where application of nanomaterials may ameliorate drought stress by increasing enzymatic antioxidants and decreasing generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Despite the promising results of nano-farming we conclude that further research is required, particularly to investigate potential negative effects, for example on nano-toxicity where particles can enter groundwater or into the food chain. Finally, drought stress is a complexed problem that affects all living organisms. A quick fix is not possible, but humankind needs to collaborate and work for a better future for all. Abstract

Background The worldwide use of prone position (PP) for invasively ventilated patients with COVID-19 is progressively increasing from the first pandemic wave in everyday clinical practice. Among the suggested treatments for the management of ARDS patients, PP was recommended in the Surviving Sepsis Campaign COVID-19 guidelines as an adjuvant therapy for improving ventilation. In patients with severe classical ARDS, some authors reported that early application of prolonged PP sessions significantly decreases 28-day and 90-day mortality. Methods and analysis Since January 2021, the COVID19 Veneto ICU Network research group has developed and implemented nationally and internationally the "PROVENT-C19 Registry", endorsed by the Italian Society of Anesthesia Analgesia Resuscitation and Intensive Care. . .'(SIAARTI). The PROVENT-C19 Registry wishes to describe 1. The real clinical practice on the use of PP in COVID-19 patients during the pandemic at a National and International level; and 2. Potential baseline and clinical characteristics that identify subpopulations of invasively ventilated patients with COVID-19 that may improve daily from PP therapy. This web-based registry will provide relevant information on how the database research tools may improve our daily clinical practice. Conclusions This multicenter, prospective registry is the first to identify and characterize the role of PP on clinical outcome in COVID-19 patients. In recent years, data emerging from large registries have been increasingly used to provide real-world evidence on the effectiveness, quality, and safety of a clinical intervention. Indeed observation-based registries could be effective tools aimed at identifying specific clusters of patients within a large study population with widely heterogeneous clinical characteristics. Abstract

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetically inherited hemolytic anemia increasingly appreciated as a chronic inflammatory condition and hypercoagulable state with high thrombotic risk. It is associated with disturbed immune phenotype and function and circulating microparticles (MPs) derived from multiple cell sources. This study was carried out to determine MPs profiles in patients with sickle cell anemia (either on hydroxyurea (HU) therapy or those with no disease-modifying therapy) and to compare these profiles with healthy children. Moreover, our study assesses the potential impact of HU on other aspects of circulating MPs. We performed a cross-sectional study on 30 pediatric patients with SCD divided by treatment into 2 groups (those receiving HU or no therapy) attending Hematology Clinic and 20 age-matched healthy children. The blood samples obtained were analyzed for MPs by flow cytometry. Sickle cell disease group with no therapy showed elevated levels of total, platelet, and erythroid MPs. In contrast, therapy with HU was associated with normalization of MPs. This study provided additional evidence that HU is an effective treatment option in pediatric patients with SCD, as it seems that it decreases the abnormally elevated MPs in those patients.
