Medium molecular mass peptides have been identified, using gel chromatography, in the blood of 58 patients with peritonitis of various etiology and 20 donors. Peptides with a relative molecular mass about 1300, corresponding to fraction VI and playing a key role in endogenous intoxication in the postoperative period have been detected in patients with peritonitis. Gel chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography have been applied to analysis of the blood serum peptides in renal patients. The levels of the peptides with a molecular mass of 300-5000 D have been found to correlate with the severity of the kidney involvement. A rapid method for measuring the concentrations of these peptides has been developed, based on the precipitation of the blood serum high-molecular peptides followed by measurement of the concentration of the peptides remaining in the supernatant with the use of a specific reagent. The suggested method has been used to define the severity of the kidney involvement and to monitor the efficacy of hemodialysis and hemoperfusion.
