Recently, the development of techniques to produce detoxified biocompounds has attracted much research interest. This study reviews adsorbents for application in the purification and detoxification of biocompounds, aiming to identify the field's knowledge gaps, trends, updates and hotspots. This review focuses on the description of the types of adsorbents (activated carbon, zeolites, clays, clay minerals and biosorbents) and their activation methods (chemical and physical) for laboratory and industrial adsorption. The adsorbents that stand out are activated carbon and chitosan‐based adsorbents. Moreover, there is a research trend toward using adsorbents to purify bioactive compounds, sugars and amino acids. An economic evaluation was conducted of flavanone and sugar production from orange peel (OP) using a sequential hydrothermal process. The process was conducted at laboratory (2 × 5 L), pilot (3 × 10 L), and industrial (3 × 500 L) scales. The results demonstrate that the scale‐up process decreased the cost of manufacturing (COM) with a significant increase in flavanone and sugar production. The lowest COM was of US$ 25.72/kg flavanones and US$ 1.43/kg sugars, both on an industrial scale. The predominant costs at the industrial scale (>90%) were the cost of utilities and the cost of raw materials. A low capital payback time was obtained, which decreased as return on investment and gross margin increased. A strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats matrix demonstrates the relevant business topics related to the scale‐up of OP processing. This study aims to evaluate the Brazilian production of açaí, focusing on its waste generation and addressing mass and energy balances arising from its cultivation, extraction, processing, and waste disposal. A new technological route for açaíʼs waste management was introduced for bioenergy recovery based on the circular economy concept. In 2018, Brazil produced 1.7 million tons of açaí fruit for an income of 1.07 billion USD, and the associated waste generation (seeds) was estimated at 85%. Due to the high production of waste, an innovative approach was developed for a system boundary (conceptual line that divides the system), including the management of solid and liquid wastes through anaerobic digestion (AD). The results showed that, from 1 ton of açaí fruit fed into the facility for processing, 1.2 ton of solid waste and wastewater was generated. This waste was submitted to AD and produced 2.77 m3 of biogas, with a methane composition of 50%. The complete industrial process demands 25 kWh per ton of frozen pulp. The local energy produced by the biogas burning could be recycled and used by the process, establishing a circular energy economy for this sector. With the adoption of AD waste management, about 61% of the external electricity requirement for the açaí fruit processing can be replaced from the biogas produced. The adoption of this technology can be contribute to decarbonization. In this work a new biodegradable film was developed, and bioactive compounds from Acca sellowiana were incorporated. Film packaging production was carried out from an aqueous filmogenic solution, with a blend of Brazilian pine seeds starch, citric pectin, glycerol and aqueous extract from pulp and husk of Acca sellowiana. In all the films produced were evaluated the physicochemical and antioxidant properties. The films produced presented lower moisture content, and extracts from pulp and husk affect the moisture content and the water solubility of the films. Evaluating the light transmittance, films with husk extract addition presented (p<0.05) a reduction of luminosity and an increase of opacity. Films produced with husk extract presented a higher content of total phenolic and flavonoids compounds, and this fact promoted a high antioxidant activity by DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assay. Bioactive and biodegradable films produced with Brazilian pine seed starch, citric pectin and Acca sellowiana extracts presented good physicochemical and antioxidant parameters, and may be an alternative to packaging in food systems.
