The aim of this study was to develop an electronic performance support system (EPSS) to improve students' performance in the topic of scientific research methods. A review of the literature shows that EPSSs are usually developed using advanced programming technologies. This limits the widespread use of EPSS for educators and researchers. In this study, a mid-level EPSS was developed by integrating Moodle to a static (non-interactive) educational system, without using advanced programming. The study was designed and carried out using the developmental research method. Study participants were second year students from the Faculty of Medicine of Hacettepe University in Turkey. The system was designed by taking students' needs into account, as well as other issues that the literature identified as points of consideration when developing an EPSS. The mid-level EPSS developed within the framework of this study increased the students' academic achievement and students stated that the system met their expectations.

A review of literature reveals serious problems in the validity and reliability of the measurement tools used in simulation technology acceptance studies conducted in the context of various technology acceptance models. To address this gap in literature, this study proposes a measurement tool that will allow a valid and reliable measurement of students' acceptance levels. The study was conducted in the 2017-2018 academic year and involved a group of 409 health sciences students. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted to examine the construct validity of the conclusions based on gathered measurements. At the end of the EFA, a construct with a single factor and 24 items which explained 54.87 percent of the total variance was obtained. Based on the findings of the research, it was concluded that simulation acceptance scale produced from the EFA could be used for valid and reliable measurements regarding the general acceptance of simulation technologies by the health sciences students.

Virtual patient (VP) is a concept used in the teaching of communication skills, and like physical examinations and other professional skills, must be taught with utmost care. In Turkey, as VPs are yet to be used in medical training, the usual practice when teaching such skills is to use standardised patients (individuals pretending to be patients). The main purpose of this study was to design, develop and evaluate a 3D VP application that can move, has speech-over lip sync, allows written communication and is supported by a strong scenario to improve the communication skills of students. The study was designed and carried out using developmental research methods. The implementation phase involved a pretest posttest quasi-experimental design. The participants in the study consisted of academics specialising in medicine, software experts, an education technology expert, an assessment and evaluation expert, and medical students. The study found that VP applications were accepted by students and were as effective as standardised patients for the teaching of communication skills. The students reported that the VP application developed was very successful in terms of visual and behavioural reality.

The objective of this study was to examine the effects of the flipped classroom method on the academic achievement of medical students in the Good Medical Practice Program, collect data on the students' opinions of this method, and offer solutions to some of the most commonly cited problems in the literature regarding its use. The research design of the study involves a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group, and the qualitative research method for answers to follow-up questions. Participants in the study were 38 first-year students from the Faculty of Medicine of Hacettepe University. An academic achievement test and a semi-structured interview form were used as data collection instruments. Findings of the study show that the students taught using the flipped classroom model have higher levels of achievement compared with the students taught using the traditional method. Interviews conducted with the experimental group showed that these students had positive views regarding the flipped classroom method, and it was concluded that solutions offered to deal with the problems, commonly viewed as the disadvantages of the method, were effective.

This study aims to develop a measurement tool that will allow a valid and reliable measurement of students' acceptance levels within the framework of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model concerning LMS. The study was conducted in the 2016-2017 academic year with three groups of participants consisting of 515 medical students. Expert opinion was obtained to examine content validity and face validity of the scale, and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted to examine the construct validity of the conclusions based on measurements. A construct with four factors and 21 items was obtained at the end of the EFA, which explained 64.39% of the total variance. CFA results showed that the construct with four factors and 21 items had good fit to the data. The reliability of the measurements based on the scale was examined using Cronbach's Alpha and test-retest methods. To examine the discriminatory power of the items, adjusted item-total correlations and a comparison of top and bottom 27% of participants were used. Findings of the study show that the scale can be used as a tool that generates valid and reliable measurements of students' acceptance concerning LMS.

The aim is to investigate the effects of delivering group-based personalized teaching via an electronic performance support system (EPSS) in an online medical informatics course on medical students' academic achievement and community of inquiry levels. The basic working principle of EPSS is to provide the most appropriate teaching methods to the educator, according to the students' variables and learning outcomes. The research design of this study involved a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group and the qualitative research method of answers to follow-up questions. While the students in the experimental group were taught various teaching approaches (flipped classroom, brain storming, case-based learning, debate and think-pair-share), the students in the control group were taught directly by online lessons according to direct instruction method. It was seen that the experimental procedure had a positive effect on both the academic achievement and community of inquiry levels of the experimental group compared to the control group. Besides, students in the experimental group reported that the lessons were more effective when they were enjoyable, motivating, focused on discussion and research, and were taught through cases. A mixed research design using a pretest or posttest experimental model, combined with qualitative data, was conducted in a public middle school in Turkey for 2 weeks (three class hours) within a science course. Participants consisted of two groups of sixth-grade students. A variety of electronic materials to support a flipped classroom environment was distributed to students in the experimental group 3 days before the class. Before the normal class hour, the basic outline of the subject was discussed with the students, problem situations were created and solutions suggested, issues that were not understood were focused on, and, most importantly, student-teacher interaction was carried out at the highest level. It was determined that the flipped classroom yielded both greater academic achievement and greater motivation compared with the control group.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of anchored instruction on the students in secondary school math studies classrooms. This study adopted a quasi-experimental design. This research involved both quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate the effects of anchored instruction on students' academical achievement, permanence and perceptions about anchored instruction method. Tests used were; before performing the unit pre-test, after completing the unit post-test and to determine the permanence of the information that has been learned permanence-test. Overall, the findings suggest that the students in the experimental group were more successful than students who were taught traditional method in control group. In addition, content analysis results showed that this method was fun and effective for learning.

Objective: Electronic performance support systems (EPSSs) developed in the literature generally use advanced programming. This situation may limit the use of the EPSSs. Results: Students taught using the EPSS have higher levels of academic achievement and performance compared with the students taught using the lecture format in a traditional way of teaching. Students stated that the system was useful and effective. Conclusion: This web‐based mid‐level EPSS was developed without any financial cost and using advanced programming. Introduction: The relationship between the spatial ability levels of students and anatomy education is not well established in the literature, but it was stated that students should take short‐term training during the first years of their education. There is limited number of studies on this topic. In that respect, the aim of this study was to determine the spatial ability levels of medical, dental and nursing students and to evaluate whether this ability level showed difference with respect to faculty, anatomy courses attended or short‐term training, or not. Materials and Methods: Study sample was composed of 1071 students. Data were collected by Personal Information Form, Visualization of Views Test (VoVT) and Cross Section Test (CST). Data analyses were done by SPSS 21 package software. Results: Students were determined to have medium level spatial ability. Medical and dental students were found to have higher spatial ability levels than nursing students. Medical and nursing students' CST scores showed significant difference after taking anatomy course. After short‐term training, both CST and VoVT scores of students differed significantly. Conclusion: Supporting anatomy courses with education materials appropriate for the spatial ability level of students and introducing spatial ability development trainings in small groups would aid in increasing spatial ability levels of students. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the flipped classroom (FC) approach on the skill acquisition of students, and to garner feedback from them about the effectiveness of this approach. A prospective controlled post-test and delayed-test research design was applied involving a comparison with a control group, while a qualitative research method for answers to follow-up questions. The participants in the study were 363 second-year students from the Faculty of Medicine of Hacettepe University. The performance test and feedback form were used as data collection instruments. The findings of the study revealed that, in terms of skill acquisition and the maintenance of performance, the student sample trained in the FC approach were more successful than those in the control group who were trained using a traditional Lecture-Based approach. It was further ascertained that in experimental group, the materials were wide-ranging, and the students were able to interact better with the lecturer, felt more qualified after practice and received more effective feedback. In this study, to present an instructional model by considering the existing models of instructional design (ARCS, ADDIE, ASSURE, Dick and Carey, Seels and Glasgow, Smith and Ragan etc.) with the nature of technology-based education and to reveal analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation, and to revise levels with lower levels of the instructional design model were aimed. The ASSURE model is extremely learner centered. Unlike many design models, it was created using cognitive theories of learning as its foundation. The directions of Assure Model are characteristic features of learners, getting stated objectives and selecting the best media and materials for the instruction program. In this study, document analysis method were used. As a result, two example lesson plans given can be updated according to all grades and lessons.
