Search

We provide an overview of the status of Monte-Carlo event generators for high-energy particle physics. Guided by the experimental needs and requirements, we highlight areas of active development, and opportunities for future improvements. Particular emphasis is given to physics models and algorithms that are employed across a variety of experiments. These common themes in event generator development lead to a more comprehensive understanding of physics at the highest energies and intensities, and allow models to be tested against a wealth of data that have been accumulated over the past decades. A cohesive approach to event generator development will allow these models to be further improved and systematic uncertainties to be reduced, directly contributing to future experimental success. Event generators are part of a much larger ecosystem of computational tools. They typically involve a number of unknown model parameters that must be tuned to experimental data, while maintaining the integrity of the underlying physics models. Making both these data, and the analyses with which they have been obtained accessible to future users is an essential aspect of open science and data preservation. A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ (version 2.7) is now available. This version comes with a number of improvements including: an interface to the Universal FeynRules Output (UFO) format allowing the simulation of a wide range of new-physics models; developments of the Matchbox framework for next-to-leading order (NLO) simulations; better treatment of QCD radiation in heavy particle decays in new-physics models; a new tune of underlying event and colour connection parameters that allows a good simultaneous description of both Tevatron and LHC underlying event data and the effective cross-section parameter for double-parton scattering., Comment: erwig++

We report on the implementation of an interface between the SANC generator framework for Drell-Yan hard processes, which includes next-to-leading order electroweak (NLO EW) corrections, and the Herwig++ and Pythia8 QCD parton shower Monte Carlos. A special aspect of this implementation is that the initial-state shower evolution in both shower generators has been augmented to handle the case of an incoming photon-in-a-proton, diagrams for which appear at the NLO EW level. The difference between shower algorithms leads to residual differences in the relative corrections of 2-3% in the p_T(mu) distributions at p_T(mu)>~50 GeV (where the NLO EW correction itself is of order 10%)., Comment: 20 pages, 12 postscript figures, uses axodraw.sty, feynmf, subfiles.sty

These lectures on QCD stress the theoretical elements that underlie a wide range of phenomenological studies, particularly gauge invariance, renormalization, factorization and infrared safety. The objective of this first workshop on Multiple Partonic Interactions (MPI) at the LHC is to raise the profile of MPI studies, summarizing the legacy from the older phenomenology at hadronic colliders and favouring further specific contacts between the theory and experimental communities. The MPI are experiencing a growing popularity and are currently widely invoked to account for observations that would not be explained otherwise: the activity of the Underlying Event, the cross sections for multiple heavy flavour production, the survival probability of large rapidity gaps in hard diffraction, etc. At the same time, the implementation of the MPI effects in the Monte Carlo models is quickly proceeding through an increasing level of sophistication and complexity that in perspective achieves deep general implications for the LHC physics. After a brief introduction to the physics of soft gluons in QCD we present a surprising prediction. Dijet production in hadron-hadron collisions provides the paradigm, i.e. h_1 +h_2 \to jj+X. In particular, we look at the case where there is a restriction placed on the emission of any further jets in the region in between the primary (highest p_T) dijets. Logarithms in the ratio of the jet scale to the veto scale can be summed to all orders in the strong coupling. Surprisingly, factorization of collinear emissions fails at scales above the veto scale and triggers the appearance of double logarithms in the hard sub-process. A new release of the Monte Carlo program Herwig++ (version 2.3) is now available. This version includes a number of improvements including: the extension of the program to lepton-hadron collisions; the inclusion of several processes accurate at next-to-leading order in the POsitive Weight Hardest Emission Generator (POWHEG) scheme; the inclusion of three-body decays and finite-width effects in Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics processes; a new procedure for reconstructing the kinematics of the parton shower based on the colour structure of the hard scattering process; a new model for baryon decays including excited baryon multiplets; the addition of a soft component to the multiple scattering model of the underlying event; new matrix elements for Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) and e+e- processes., Comment: Program and additional information available from http://projects.hepforge.org/herwig/

Herwig++ is the successor of the event generator HERWIG. In its present version 2.2.1 it provides a program for full LHC event generation which is superior to the previous program in many respects. In a previous paper we reported the discovery of super-leading logarithmic terms in a non-global QCD observable. In this short update we recalculate the first super-leading logarithmic contribution to the 'gaps between jets' cross-section using a colour basis independent notation. This sheds light on the structure and origin of the super-leading terms and allows them to be calculated for gluon scattering processes for the first time., Comment: 21 pages

In this paper we describe Herwig++ version 2.3, a general-purpose Monte Carlo event generator for the simulation of hard lepton-lepton, lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron collisions. A number of important hard scattering processes are available, together with an interface via the Les Houches Accord to specialized matrix element generators for additional processes. The simulation of Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics includes a range of models and allows new models to be added by encoding the Feynman rules of the model. The parton-shower approach is used to simulate initial- and final-state QCD radiation, including colour coherence effects, with special emphasis on the correct description of radiation from heavy particles. The underlying event is simulated using an eikonal multiple parton-parton scattering model. The formation of hadrons from the quarks and gluons produced in the parton shower is described using the cluster hadronization model. A new release of the Monte Carlo program Herwig++ (version 2.1) is now available. This version includes a number of significant improvements including: an eikonal multiple parton-parton scattering model of the underlying event; the inclusion of Beyond the Standard Model physics; and a new hadronic decay model tuned to LEP data. A new release of the Monte Carlo program Herwig++ (version 2.0) is now available. A standard file format is proposed to store process and event information, primarily output from parton-level event generators for further use by general-purpose ones. The information content is identical with what was already defined by the Les Houches Accord five years ago, but then in terms of Fortran commonblocks. The HERA electron--proton collider has collected 100 pb$^{-1}$ of data since its start-up in 1992, and recently moved into a high-luminosity operation mode, with upgraded detectors, aiming to increase the total integrated luminosity per experiment to more than 500 pb$^{-1}$. HERA has been a machine of excellence for the study of QCD and the structure of the proton. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which will collide protons with a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, will be completed at CERN in 2007. The main mission of the LHC is to discover and study the mechanisms of electroweak symmetry breaking, possibly via the discovery of the Higgs particle, and search for new physics in the TeV energy scale, such as supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Besides these goals, the LHC will also make a substantial number of precision measurements and will offer a new regime to study the strong force via perturbative QCD processes and diffraction. For the full LHC physics programme a good understanding of QCD phenomena and the structure function of the proton is essential. Therefore, in March 2004, a one-year-long workshop started to study the implications of HERA on LHC physics. This included proposing new measurements to be made at HERA, extracting the maximum information from the available data, and developing/improving the theoretical and experimental tools. We calculate the soft anomalous dimension matrix for a five-parton process, qq -> qqg. Considering different bases we unveil some interesting properties of this matrix., Comment: 11 pages; calculation extended to general 5-parton kinematics

We use perturbative QCD to calculate the parton level cross section for the production of two jets that are far apart in rapidity, subject to a limitation on the total transverse momentum Q0 in the interjet region. We specifically address the question of how to combine the approach which sums all leading logarithms in Q/Q0 (where Q is the jet transverse momentum) with the BFKL approach, in which leading logarithms of the scattering energy are summed. This paper constitutes progress towards the simultaneous summation of all important logarithms. Using an "all orders" matching, we are able to obtain results for the cross section which correctly reproduce the two approaches in the appropriate limits., Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures, minor corrections to text and improved figures

We calculate resummed perturbative predictions for gaps-between-jets processes and compare to HERA data. Our calculation of this non-global observable needs to include the effects of primary gluon emission (global logarithms) and secondary gluon emission (non-global logarithms) to be correct at the leading logarithm (LL) level. We include primary emission by calculating anomalous dimension matrices for the geometry of the specific event definitions and estimate the effect of non-global logarithms in the large $N_c$ limit. The resulting predictions for energy flow observables are consistent with experimental data., Comment: 31 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Recent work in inter-jet energy flow has identified a class of leading logarithms previously not considered in the literature. These so-called non-global logarithms have been shown to have significant numerical impact on gaps-between-jets calculations at the energies of current particle colliders. Here we calculate, at fixed order and to all orders, the effect of applying clustering to the gluonic final state responsible for these logarithms for a trivial colour flow 2 jet system. Such a clustering algorithm has already been used for experimental measurements at HERA. We find that the impact of the non-global logarithms is reduced, but not removed, when clustering is demanded, a result which is of considerable interest for energy flow observable calculations., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We introduce an eikonal Monte Carlo model (running in conjunction with HERWIG) for simulating multiparticle production in hadron-hadron interactions. We compare our simulated data to the CDF Tevatron measurement of the underlying event activity in hard inelastic proton-antiproton scattering at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV. By fixing the only free parameter in our model, the total hadron-hadron cross section, we find that our model describes the data better than either the HERWIG Underlying Event model or the Hard Multiparton model., Comment: This version corrects a minor bug in the numerical code. We describe the implementation of supersymmetric processes in the HERWIG Monte Carlo event generator. We define relevant parameter and mixing conventions and list the hard scattering matrix elements. Our implementation is based on the Minimum Supersymmetric Standard Model, with the option of R-parity violation. The sparticle spectrum is completely general. Both hadron-hadron and lepton-lepton collisions are covered. The aim of this paper is to summarize the general status of our understanding of small x physics. It is based on presentations and discussions at an informal meeting on this topic held in Lund, Sweden, in March 2001. This document also marks the founding of an informal collaboration between experimentalists and theoreticians with a special interest in small x physics. HERWIG is a general-purpose Monte Carlo event generator, which includes the simulation of hard lepton-lepton, lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron scattering and soft hadron-hadron collisions in one package. It uses the parton-shower approach for initial- and final-state QCD radiation, including colour coherence effects and azimuthal correlations both within and between jets. This article updates the description of HERWIG published in 1992, emphasising the new features incorporated since then. These include, in particular, the matching of first-order matrix elements with parton showers, a more correct treatment of heavy quark decays, and a wide range of new processes, including many predicted by the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, with the option of R-parity violation. At the same time we offer a brief review of the physics underlying HERWIG together with details of the input and control parameters and the output data, to provide a self-contained guide for prospective users of the program. This version of the manual (version 3) is updated to HERWIG version 6.5, which is expected to be the last major release of Fortran HERWIG. We analyse the impact of matrix-element corrections to top decays in HERWIG on several observables related to the jet activity in t-tbar events at the Tevatron and at the LHC. An overview is given of general-purpose event generators, especially PYTHIA and HERWIG. We calculate the subjet rates for jets produced in hadron collisions. The kt algorithm is used to define the jets and allows the theoretical calculation to sum both the leading and next-to-leading logarithms in the resolution variable, ycut. We also ensure that our calculation matches exactly the leading order in alpha_s result and has sensible behaviour near thresholds., Comment: 23 pages, 22 figures

We present an outlook for possible discovery of supersymmetry with broken R-parity at Run II of the Tevatron. We first present a review of the literature and an update of the experimental bounds. In turn we then discuss the following processes: 1. Resonant slepton production followed by R-parity violating decay, (a) via $LQD^c$ and (b) via $LLE^c$. 2. How to distinguish resonant slepton production from $Z'$ or $W'$ production. 3. Resonant slepton production followed by the decay to neutralino LSP, which decays via $LQD^c$. 4. Resonant stop production followed by the decay to a chargino, which cascades to the neutralino LSP. 5. Gluino pair production followed by the cascade decay to charm squarks which decay directly via $L_1Q_2D^c_1$. 6. Squark pair production followed by the cascade decay to the neutralino LSP which decays via $L_1Q_2D^c_1$. 7. Monte Carlo models of DIS e-gamma scattering must describe hard emissions as well as the soft and collinear limits. Comparison with the observed experimental hadronic energy flow has shown that various models underestimate the high-p_T contribution, in particular at low-x. We have attempted to tune the Herwig, Pythia and Ariadne models to improve the agreement with the data, and to understand the physical implications of the changes required. Unless the physics of these processes is understood it will not be possible to unfold the photon structure functions F_2^\gamma from the e^+e^- data without large model dependent systematic errors., Comment: 5 pages including 10 figures

An excess of events with a rapidity gap between jets, over what would be expected from non-diffractive processes, has been observed at HERA. A process based on a perturbative QCD calculation of colour singlet exchange has been added to HERWIG. With this addition, HERWIG is able to describe the number of events with a gap between jets over the number without a gap. This gap fraction is predicted to rise at large rapidity intervals between jets which would only be visible if the detector coverage were increased., Comment: 5 pages including 3 figures. HERWIG (Hadron Emission Reactions With Interfering Gluons) is a multipurpose Monte Carlo event generator for the simulation of hard collisions between hadrons, leptons and photons. This note describes the new features of version 5.9. These include adding over 100 new particles, 1800 new decay modes and supporting new decay types. A complete space-time picture, including heavy meson mixing and secondary decays, is available for all event types and includes an optional colour rearrangement model. Initial state radition of photons in e^+e^- is is now included. Many other processes and features have been upgraded., Comment: 57k of gzipped ASCII text. The high energy photoproduction of jets is being observed at the ep collider, HERA. It may be that the HERA centre-of-mass energy is sufficiently large that the production of more than one pair of jets per ep collision becomes possible, owing to the large number density of the probed gluons. We construct a Monte Carlo model of such multiparton interactions and study their effects on a wide range of physical observables. The conclusion is that multiple interactions could have very significant effects upon the photoproduction final state and that this would for example make extractions of the gluon density in the photon rather difficult. Total rates for the production of many (i.e. > 2) jets could provide direct evidence for the presence of multiple interactions, although parton showering and hadronization significantly affect low transverse energy jets., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures included

We study the effect of infrared renormalons upon shape variables that are commonly used to determine the strong coupling constant in $e^+e^-$ annihilation into hadronic jets. We consider the model of QCD in the limit of large $n_f$. We find a wide variety of different behaviours of shape variables with respect to power suppressed effects induced by infrared renormalons. In particular, we find that oblateness is affected by $1/Q$ non--perturbative effects even away from the two jet region, and the energy--energy correlation is affected by $1/Q$ non--perturbative effects for all values of the angle. On the contrary, variables like thrust, the $c$ parameter, the heavy jet mass, and others, do not develop any $1/Q$ correction away from the two jet region at the leading $n_f$ level. We argue that $1/Q$ corrections will eventually arise at subleading $n_f$ level, but that they could maintain an extra $\as(Q)$ suppression. We conjecture therefore that the leading power correction to shape variables will have in general the form $\alpha^n_{\rm S}(Q)/Q$, and it may therefore be possible to classify shape variables according to the value of $n$., Comment: 20 pages, Latex, epsfig, 3 tar-gzip-uuencoded figures. At $e^+e^-$ and $ep$ colliders, the large fluxes of almost on-shell photons accompanying the lepton beams lead to the photoproduction of jets. As the centre-of-mass energy is increased, regions of smaller $x$ in the parton densities are explored and these are regions of high parton density. As a result, the probability for more than one hard partonic scattering occurring in a single $\gamma \gamma$ or $\gamma p$ collision can become significant. This effect has been simulated using an eikonal prescription combined with the HERWIG Monte Carlo program. The possible effects of multiple hard interactions on event shapes and jet cross sections have been studied in this framework at a range of energies relevant to HERA and LEPII. The unique nature of the photon can be investigated in hitherto unexplored kinematic regions at LEP2. We discuss the theoretical significance of deep inelastic measurements and present a prescription that allows a theoretically and experimentally sensible separation of the so-called `anomalous' and `hadronic' components of the target photon. We perform preliminary studies regarding the ability to reconstruct the $\gamma^* \gamma$ CM energy (and hence $x$) and the usefulness of the easier to measure electron structure function., Comment: 6 pages Latex + 5 figures in a uuencoded file
