We investigate a new task in human motion prediction, which is predicting motions under unexpected physical perturbation potentially involving multiple people. Compared with existing research, this task involves predicting less controlled, unpremeditated and pure reactive motions in response to external impact and how such motions can propagate through people. It brings new challenges such as data scarcity and predicting complex interactions. To this end, we propose a new method capitalizing differential physics and deep neural networks, leading to an explicit Latent Differential Physics (LDP) model. Through experiments, we demonstrate that LDP has high data efficiency, outstanding prediction accuracy, strong generalizability and good explainability. Since there is no similar research, a comprehensive comparison with 11 adapted baselines from several relevant domains is conducted, showing LDP outperforming existing research both quantitatively and qualitatively, improving prediction accuracy by as much as 70%, and demonstrating significantly stronger generalization.

In high-density crowds, local motion can propagate, amplify, and lead to macroscopic phenomena, including 'density waves'. These density waves only occur when individuals interact, and impulses are transferred to neighbours. How this impulse is passed on by the human body and which effects this has on individuals is still not fully understood. To further investigate this, experiments focusing on the propagation of a push were conducted. In the experiments the crowd is greatly simplified by five people lining up in a row. The rearmost person in the row was pushed forward in a controlled manner with a punching bag. The intensity of the push, the initial distance between participants and the initial arm posture were varied. Collected data included side view and top view video recordings, head trajectories, 3D motion using motion capturing (MoCap) suits as well as pressure measured at the punching bag. With a hybrid tracking algorithm, the MoCap data are combined with the head trajectories to allow an analysis of the motion of each limb in relation to other persons. The observed motion of the body in response to the push can be divided into three phases. These are (i) receiving an impulse, (ii) receiving and passing on an impulse, and (iii) passing on an impulse. Using the 3D MoCap data, we can identify the start and end times of each phase. To determine when a push is passed on, the forward motion of the person in front has to be considered. The projection of the center of mass relative to the initial position of the feet is a measure of the extent to which a person is displaced from the rest position. Specifying the timing of these phases is particularly important to distinguish between different types of physical interactions. Analyzing the microscopic dynamics of pushing behavior within crowds can offer valuable insights into crowd patterns and interactions. By identifying instances of pushing in crowd videos, a deeper understanding of when, where, and why such behavior occurs can be achieved. This knowledge is crucial to creating more effective crowd management strategies, optimizing crowd flow, and enhancing overall crowd experiences. However, manually identifying pushing behavior at the microscopic level is challenging, and the existing automatic approaches cannot detect such microscopic behavior. Thus, this article introduces a novel automatic framework for identifying pushing in videos of crowds on a microscopic level. The framework comprises two main components: i) Feature extraction and ii) Video labeling. In the feature extraction component, a new Voronoi-based method is developed for determining the local regions associated with each person in the input video. Subsequently, these regions are fed into EfficientNetV1B0 Convolutional Neural Network to extract the deep features of each person over time. In the second component, a combination of a fully connected layer with a Sigmoid activation function is employed to analyze these deep features and annotate the individuals involved in pushing within the video. The framework is trained and evaluated on a new dataset created using six real-world experiments, including their corresponding ground truths. To investigate the impact of social groups on waiting behaviour of passengers at railway platforms a method to identify social groups through the monitoring of distances between pedestrians and the stability of those distances over time is introduced. The method allows the recognition of groups using trajectories only and thus opens up the possibility of studying crowds in public places without constrains caused by privacy protection issues. Trajectories from a railway platform in Switzerland were used to analyse the waiting behaviour of passengers in dependence of waiting time as well as the size of social groups. The analysis of the trajectories shows that the portion of passengers travelling in groups reaches up to 10\% during the week and increases to 20 \% on the weekends. 60\% of the groups were pairs, larger groups were less frequent. With increasing group size, the mean speed of the members decreases. Individuals and pairs often choose waiting spots at the sides of the stairs and in vicinity of obstacles, while larger groups wait close to the platform entries. The results indicate that passengers choose waiting places according to the following criteria and ranking: shortest ways, direction of the next intended action, undisturbed places and ensured communication. While individual passengers often wait in places where they are undisturbed and do not hinder others, the dominating comfort criterion for groups is to ensure communication. The results regarding space requirements of waiting passengers could be used for different applications. During the Love Parade disaster in 2011 in Duisburg, Germany, twenty one visitors were killed and more than five hundred injured in a very dense crowd on the route to and from the festival area. Approximately nine hundred visitors who had been among this crowd were subsequently interviewed by police officers as eyewitnesses. This paper content analyses a random sample of 136 of these witness statements, focusing on how those present perceived the crowd, how they behaved, how they experienced the event emotionally, what happened to their bodies, and which collective dynamics they described. This approach provides a perspective from within crowd dynamics which are usually observed from a top-view perspective. Almost all the attendees became strongly focused on the staircase and the pole the only visible ways out of the crowd. In some cases, they tried to reach these destinations by all means and at the expense of others. But at the same time, helping behavior is the behavior most frequently mentioned. Although witnesses described feelings of intense fear, they reject the idea of mass panic. As the most dangerous dynamics, a combination of falls (often after people had fainted) and transversal waves (which made people fall on top of each other) could be reconstructed. Understanding pedestrian dynamics and the interaction of pedestrians with their environment is crucial to the safe and comfortable design of pedestrian facilities. Experiments offer the opportunity to explore the influence of individual factors. In the context of the project CroMa (Crowd Management in transport infrastructures), experiments were conducted with about 1000 participants to test various physical and social psychological hypotheses focusing on people's behaviour at railway stations and crowd management measures. The following experiments were performed: i) Train Platform Experiment, ii) Crowd Management Experiment, iii) Single-File Experiment, iv) Personal Space Experiment, v) Boarding and Alighting Experiment, vi) Bottleneck Experiment and vii) Tiny Box Experiment. Various studies address the question of what factors are relevant to the course of the fundamental diagram in single-file experiments. Some indicate that there are differences due to group composition when gender is taken into account. For this reason, further single-file experiments with homogeneous and heterogeneous group compositions were conducted. A Tukey HSD test was performed to investigate whether there are differences between the mean of velocity in different density ranges. A comparison of different group compositions shows that the effect of gender can only be seen, if at all, in a small density interval. Regression analyses were also conducted to determine whether, at high densities, the distance between individuals depends on the gender of the neighboring pedestrians and to establish what human factors have an effect on the velocity. An analysis of the distances between individuals at high densities indicates that there is no effect of the gender of the neighboring pedestrians. Taking into account additional human factors in a regression analysis does not improve the model.

Crowding at the entrances of large events may lead to critical and life-threatening situations, particularly when people start pushing each other to reach the event faster. Automatic and timely identification of pushing behavior would help organizers and security forces to intervene early and mitigate dangerous situations. In this paper, we propose a cloud-based deep learning framework for automatic early detection of pushing in crowded event entrances. The proposed framework initially modifies and trains the EfficientNetV2B0 Convolutional Neural Network model. Subsequently, it integrates the adapted model with an accurate and fast pre-trained deep optical flow model with the color wheel method to analyze video streams and identify pushing patches in real-time. Moreover, the framework uses live capturing technology and a cloud-based environment to collect video streams of crowds in real-time and provide early-stage results. A novel dataset is generated based on five real-world experiments and their associated ground truth data to train the adapted EfficientNetV2B0 model. The experimental setups simulated a crowded event entrance, while the ground truths for each video experiment was generated manually by social psychologists. Several experiments on the videos and the generated dataset are carried out to evaluate the accuracy and annotation delay time of the proposed framework. The experimental results show that the proposed framework identified pushing behaviors with an accuracy rate of 87% within a reasonable delay time.

In recent years, numerous studies have been published dealing with the effect of individual characteristics of pedestrians on the fundamental diagram. These studies compared cumulative data on individuals in a group homogeneous in terms of one human factor such as age but heterogeneous in terms of other factors for instance gender. In order to examine the effect of all determined as well as undetermined human factors, individual fundamental diagrams are introduced and analyzed using multiple linear regression. A single-file school experiment with students of different age, gender, and height is therefore considered. Single individuals appearing in different runs are analyzed to study the effect of human factors such as height, age and gender and all other unknown individual effects such as motivation or attention to the individual speed. The analysis shows that for students age and height are strongly correlated and, consequently, age can be ignored. Furthermore, the study shows that gender has a weak effect and other nonmeasurable individual characteristics have a stronger effect than height. In a further step, a mixed model is used as well as the multiple linear model. Here, it is shown that the mixed model that considers all other unknown individual effects of each person as a random factor is preferable to the model where the individual speed only depends on the variables of headway, height, and all other unknown individual effects as fixed factors.

Lane formation in bidirectional pedestrian streams is based on a stimulus-response mechanism and strategies of navigation in a fast-changing environment. Although microscopic models that only guarantee volume exclusion can qualitatively reproduce this phenomenon, they are not sufficient for a quantitative description. To quantitatively describe this phenomenon, a minimal anticipatory collision-free velocity model is introduced. Compared to the original velocity model, the new model reduces the occurrence of gridlocks and reproduces the movement of pedestrians more realistically. For a quantitative description of the phenomenon, the definition of an order parameter is used to describe the formation of lanes at transient states and to show that the proposed model compares relatively well with experimental data. Furthermore, the model is validated by the experimental fundamental diagrams of bidirectional flows.

This article studies clogging phenomena using a velocity-based model for pedestrian dynamics. First, a method to identify prolonged clogs in simulations was introduced. Then bottleneck simulations were implemented with different initial and boundary conditions. The number of prolonged clogs was analyzed to investigate the decisive factors causing this phenomenon. Moreover, the time lapse between two consecutive agents passing the exit, and the trajectories of agents were analyzed. The influence of three types of factors was studied: parameters of the spatial boundaries, algorithmic factors related to the implementation of the model, and the movement model. Parameters of the spatial boundaries include the width and position of the bottleneck exit. Algorithmic factors are the update methods and the size of the time step. Model parameters cover several parameters describing the level of motivation, the strength and range of impact among agents, and the shape of agents. The results show that the occurrence of prolonged clogs is closely linked to parameters of the spatial boundaries and the movement model but has virtually no correlation with algorithmic factors.

This article presents an interdisciplinary study of physical and social psychological effects on crowd dynamics based on a series of bottleneck experiments. Bottlenecks are of particular interest for applications such as crowd management and design of emergency routes because they limit the performance of a facility. In addition to previous work on the dynamics within the bottleneck, this study focuses on the dynamics in front of the bottleneck, more specifically, at entrances. The experimental setup simulates an entrance scenario to a concert consisting of an entrance gate (serving as bottleneck) and a corridor formed by barriers. The parameters examined are the corridor width, degree of motivation and priming of the social norm of queuing. The analysis is based on head trajectories and questionnaires. We show that the density of persons per square metre depends on motivation and also increases continuously with increasing corridor width meaning that a density reduction can be achieved by a reduction of space. In comparison to other corridor widths observed, the narrowest corridor is rated as being fairer, more comfortable and as showing less unfair behaviour. Pushing behaviour is seen as ambivalent: it is rated as unfair and listed as a strategy for faster access.

In this paper, we present results of an entrance experiment investigating the effect of the corridor width in front of a bottleneck on the density. The idea is based on a previous study suggesting that a guiding system in front of an entrance can reduce pushing of the waiting people and thus the density at the entrance. In our study we aim to find out to what extend the corridor width has an impact on crowding or queuing behavior and with that on the density. The results of the presented experiment suggest that the transition takes place between a corridor width of 1.2 m and 2.3 m. The total duration of each experimental run is not significantly influenced by the corridor width but by the width of the entrance itself, the number of participants and partly by the motivation. In general, the density in front of the gate as well as the area of high density is increased by widening the corridor and by intensifying the motivation of the participants. Pedestrian behaviours tend to depend on the type of facility. Therefore accurate predictions of pedestrians movements in complex geometries (including corridor, bottleneck or intersection) are difficult to achieve for classical models with few parameters. Artificial neural networks have multiple parameters and are able to identify various types of patterns. They could be a suitable alternative for forecasts. We aim in this paper to present first steps testing this approach. We compare estimations of pedestrian speed with a classical model and a neural network for combinations of corridor and bottleneck experiments. This article is on collective phenomena in pedestrian dynamics during the assembling and dispersal phases of gatherings. To date pedestrian dynamics have been primarily studied in the natural and engineering sciences. Pedestrians are analyzed and modeled as driven particles revealing self-organizing phenomena and complex transport characteristics. However, pedestrians in crowds also behave as living beings according to stimulus-response mechanisms or act as human subjects on the basis of social norms, social identities or strategies. To show where pedestrian dynamics need social psychology in addition to the natural sciences we propose the application of three categories: phenomena, behavior and action. They permit a clear discrimination between situations in which minimal models from the natural sciences are appropriate and those in which sociological and psychological concepts are needed. To demonstrate the necessity of this framework, an experiment in which a large group of people (n=270) enters a concert hall through two different spatial barrier structures is analyzed. These two structures correspond to everyday situations such as boarding trains and access to immigration desks. Methods from the natural and social sciences are applied. Firstly, physical measurements show the influence of the spatial structure on the dynamics of the entrance procedure. Density, waiting time and speed of progress show large variations. Secondly, a questionnaire study (n=60) reveals how people perceive and evaluate these entrance situations. Markedly different expectations, social norms and strategies are associated with the two spatial structures. The results from the questionnaire study do not always conform to objective physical measures, indicating the limitations of models which are based on objective physical measures alone and which neglect subjective perspectives., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables

In this paper, the stability of the uniform solutions is analysed for microscopic flow models in interaction with $K\ge1$ predecessors. We calculate general conditions for the linear stability on the ring geometry and explore the results with particular pedestrian and car-following models based on relaxation processes. The uniform solutions are stable if the relaxation times are sufficiently small. The analysis is focused on the relevance of the number of predecessors in the dynamics. In this work, we derive first order continuum traffic flow models from a microscopic delayed follow-the-leader model. Those are applicable in the context of vehicular traffic flow as well as pedestrian traffic flow. The microscopic model is based on an optimal velocity function and a reaction time parameter. The corresponding macroscopic formulations in Eulerian or Lagrangian coordinates result in first order convection-diffusion equations. More precisely, the convection is described by the optimal velocity while the diffusion term depends on the reaction time. A linear stability analysis for homogeneous solutions of both continuous and discrete models are provided. The conditions match the ones of the car-following model for specific values of the space discretization. The behavior of the novel model is illustrated thanks to numerical simulations. Transitions to collision-free self-sustained stop-and-go dynamics are obtained if the reaction time is sufficiently large. The results show that the dynamics of the microscopic model can be well captured by the macroscopic equations. For non--zero reaction times we observe a scattered fundamental diagram. The scattering width is compared to real pedestrian and road traffic data.

To better design safe and comfortable urban spaces, understanding the nature of human crowd movement is important. However, precise interactions among pedestrians are difficult to measure in the presence of their complex decision-making processes and many related factors. While extensive studies on pedestrian flow through bottlenecks and corridors have been conducted, the dominant mode of interaction in these scenarios may not be relevant in different scenarios. Here, we attempt to decipher the factors that affect human reactions to other individuals from a different perspective. We conducted experiments employing the inflow process in which pedestrians successively enter a confined area (like an elevator) and look for a temporary position. In this process, pedestrians have a wider range of options regarding their motion than in the classical scenarios; therefore, other factors might become relevant. The preference of location is visualized by pedestrian density profiles obtained from recorded pedestrian trajectories. Non-trivial patterns of space acquisition, e.g., an apparent preference for positions near corners, were observed. This indicates the relevance of psychological and anticipative factors beyond the private sphere, which have not been deeply discussed so far in the literature on pedestrian dynamics. From the results, four major factors, which we call flow avoidance, distance cost, angle cost, and boundary preference, were suggested. We confirmed that a description of decision-making based on these factors can give a rise to realistic preference patterns, using a simple mathematical model. This article considers execution and analysis of laboratory experiments of pedestrians moving in a quasi-one-dimensional system with periodic boundary conditions. To analyze characteristics of jams in the system we aim to use the whole experimental setup as the measurement area. Thus the trajectories are transformed to a new coordinate system. We show that the trajectory data from the straight and curved parts are comparable and assume that the distributions of the residuals come from the same continuous distribution. Usually, routing models in pedestrian dynamics assume that agents have fulfilled and global knowledge about the building's structure. However, they neglect the fact that pedestrians possess no or only parts of information about their position relative to final exits and possible routes leading to them. To get a more realistic description we introduce the systematics of gathering and using spatial knowledge. A new wayfinding model for pedestrian dynamics is proposed. The model defines for every pedestrian an individual knowledge representation implying inaccuracies and uncertainties. In addition, knowledge-driven search strategies are introduced. We propose in this paper a minimal speed-based pedestrian model for which particle dynamics are intrinsically collision-free. The speed model is an optimal velocity function depending on the agent length (i.e.\ particle diameter), maximum speed and time gap parameters. The direction model is a weighted sum of exponential repulsion from the neighbors, calibrated by the repulsion rate and distance. The model's main features like the reproduction of empirical phenomena are analysed by simulation. Force-based models describe pedestrian dynamics in analogy to classical mechanics by a system of second order ordinary differential equations. By investigating the linear stability of two main classes of forces, parameter regions with unstable homogeneous states are identified. In this unstable regime it is then checked whether phase transitions or stop-and-go waves occur. Results based on numerical simulations show, however, that the investigated models lead to unrealistic behavior in form of backwards moving pedestrians and overlapping. This is one reason why stop-and-go waves have not been observed in these models. The unrealistic behavior is not related to the numerical treatment of the dynamic equations but rather indicates an intrinsic problem of this model class. Identifying the underlying generic problems gives indications how to define models that do not show such unrealistic behavior. Restrictions of pedestrian flow could be triggered by directional changes, merging of streams and other changes or disturbances causing effects similar to bottlenecks given by geometrical narrowings. In this contribution we analyze empirically how the types of the changes or disturbances influence the capacity of a facility. For this purpose four types of facilities including a short narrowing, a long narrowing, a corner and a T-junction are investigated. It is found that the reduction of pedestrian flow depends on the shape and the length of the narrowing. The maximum observed flow of the corner (about 1.45 (m.s)-1) is the lowest in all facilities studied, whereas that of the short narrowing is highest. In this paper we investigate effects of boundary conditions on one dimensional pedestrian flow which involves purely longitudinal interactions. Qualitatively, stop-and-go waves are observed under closed boundary condition and dissolve when the boundary is open. To get more detailed information the fundamental diagrams of the open and closed systems are compared using Voronoi-based measurement method. Higher maximal specific flow is observed from the pedestrian movement at open boundary condition.

In this article the dynamics of pedestrian streams in four different scenarios are compared empirically to investigate the influence of boundary conditions on it. The Voronoi method, which allows high resolution and small fluctuations of measured density in time and space, is used to analyze the experiments. It is found that pedestrian movement in systems with different boundary conditions (open, periodic boundary conditions and outflow restrained) presents various characteristics especially when the density is larger than 2 m-2. In open corridor systems the specific flow increases continuously with increasing density till 4 m-2. The specific flow keeps constant in systems with restrained outflow, whereas it decreases from 1 (m.s)-1 to zero in system with closed periodical condition., Comment: 6 pages, 10 figures

Experiments with pedestrians could depend strongly on initial conditions. Comparisons of the results of such experiments require to distinguish carefully between transient state and steady state. In this work, a feasible algorithm - Cumulative Sum Control Chart - is proposed and improved to automatically detect steady states from density and speed time series of bottleneck experiments. The threshold of the detection parameter in the algorithm is calibrated using an autoregressive model. Comparing the detected steady states with previous manually selected ones, the modified algorithm gives more reproducible results. For the applications, three groups of bottleneck experiments are analysed and the steady states are detected. The study about pedestrian flow shows that the difference between the flows in all states and in steady state mainly depends on the ratio of pedestrian number to bottleneck width. When the ratio is higher than a critical value (approximately 115 persons/m), the flow in all states is almost identical with the flow in steady state. Thus we have more possibilities to compare the flows from different experiments, especially when the detection of steady states is difficult., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

The relation between flow and density is an essential quantitative characteristic to describe the efficiency of traffic systems. We have performed experiments with single-file motion of bicycles and compare the results with previous studies for car and pedestrian motion in similar setups. In the space-time diagrams we observe three different states of motion (free flow state, jammed state and stop-and-go waves) in all these systems. Despite of their obvious differences they are described by a universal fundamental diagram after proper rescaling of space and time which takes into account the size and free velocity of the three kinds of agents. Intersections of pedestrian flows feature multiple types, varying in the numbers of flow directions as well as intersecting angles. In this article results from diverse bidirectional flow experiments with different intersecting angles are compared. To analyze the transport capabilities the Voronoi method is used to resolve the fine structure of the resulting velocity-density relations and spatial dependence of the measurements. The fundamental diagrams of various flow types are compared and show no apparent difference with respect to the intersecting angle. This result indicates that head-on conflicts of different types of flow have the same influence on the transport properties of the system, which demonstrates the high self-organization capabilities of pedestrians., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 1 Table

The aim of the Hermes project is the development of a computer simulation based on evacuation assistant to support security services in case of emergency in complex buildings and thus to improve safety at mass events. One goal of the project is to build and to calibrate models for pedestrian dynamics specifically designed for forecasting the emergency egress of large crowds faster than real-time. In this contribution, we give an overview of the project and its experimental results of unidirectional flow in a corridor. Reliable empirical data and proper understanding of pedestrian dynamics are necessary for fire safety design. However, specifications and data in different handbooks as well as experimental studies differ considerably. In this study, series of experiments under laboratory conditions were carried out to study the characteristics of uni- and bidirectional pedestrian streams in straight corridor. The Voronoi method is used to resolve the fine structure of the resulting velocity-density relations and spatial dependence of the measurements. The result shows differences in the shape of the relation for \rho > 1.0 m-2. The maximal specific flow of unidirectional streams is significantly larger than that of all bidirectional streams examined.

In this study, series of experiments under laboratory conditions were carried out to investigate pedestrian flow through a T-junction, i.e., two branches merging into the main stream. The whole duration of the experiments was recorded by video cameras and the trajectories of each pedestrian were extracted using the software Petrack from these videos. The Voronoi method is used to resolve the fine structure of the fundamental diagram and spatial dependence of the measured quantities from trajectories. In our study, only the data in the stationary state are used by analyzing the time series of density and velocity. The density, velocity and specific flow profiles are obtained by refining the size of the measurement area (here 10 cm \times 10 cm are adopted). With such a high resolution, the spatial distribution of density, velocity and specific flow can be obtained separately and the regions with higher value can be observed intuitively. Finally, the fundamental diagrams of T-junction flow is compared in three different locations. It is shown that the fundamental diagrams of the two branches match well. However, the velocities in front of the merging are significantly lower than that in the main stream at the same densities. After the merging, the specific flow increases with the density \rho till 2.5 m-2. We introduce an enhanced model based on the generalized centrifugal force model. Furthermore, the desired direction of pedestrians is investigated. Agent-based models are becoming indispensable tools in building design, safety assessments as well as management of emergency egress. However, reliable calibrations of these models should be mandatory before they are used in practice. To improve the database for model calibration we present results from two experiments at a T-junction and a corner. In such structures the dynamics of pedestrian streams is complex and up to now not studied systematically. To understand it deeply, series of well-controlled laboratory experiments are conducted. The Voronoi method, which is used to analyze the experiments, allows high resolution and small fluctuation in time and space. From the results, it is found that the fundamental diagrams of pedestrian flow in T-junction are not the same before and after merging. At the same density, the velocities of pedestrians before merging are smaller than that after merging. To analyze whether turning or merging of the stream is responsible for this discrepancy, we compare the fundamental diagrams of pedestrian flow in T-junction with the flow at a single corner. The fundamental diagrams of the streams in front and behind the corner agree well and are also in accordance with that from T-junction flow after merging. Besides, space-resolved measurements for the density, velocity profiles are obtained using Voronoi method. Experiments under laboratory conditions were carried out to study the ordering in bidirectional pedestrian streams and its influence on the fundamental diagram (density-speed-flow relation). The Voronoi method is used to resolve the fine structure of the resulting velocity-density relations and spatial dependence of the measurements. The data show that the specific flow concept is applicable also for bidirectional streams. For various forms of ordering in bidirectional streams, no large differences among density-flow relationships are found in the observed density range. The fundamental diagrams of bidirectional streams with different forms of ordering are compared with that of unidirectional streams. The result shows differences in the shape of the relation for {\rho} > 1.0 m-2. The motion of pedestrians is subject to a wide range of influences and exhibits a rich phenomenology. To enable precise measurement of the density and velocity we use an alternative definition using Voronoi diagrams which exhibits smaller fluctuations than the standard definitions. This method permits examination on scales smaller than the pedestrians. We use this method to investigate the spatial and temporal variation of the observables at bottlenecks. Experiments were performed with 180 test subjects and a wide range of bottleneck parameters. The anomalous flow through short bottlenecks and non-stationary states present with narrow bottlenecks are analysed.

Many observations of pedestrian dynamics, including various self-organization phenomena, have been reproduced successfully by different models. But the empirical databases for quantitative calibration are still insufficient, e.g. the fundamental diagram as one of the most important relationships displays non-negligible differences among various studies. To improve this situation, experiments in straight corridors and T-junction are performed. Four different measurement methods are defined to study their effects on the fundamental diagram. It is shown that they have minor influences for {\rho} <3.5 m-2 but only the Voronoi method is able to resolve the fine-structure of the fundamental diagram. This enhanced measurement method permits to observe the occurrence of boundary-induced phase transition. For corridors of different widths we found that the specific flow concept works well for {\rho} <3.5 m-2.
