Search

Circumnuclear star formation (SF) is generally seen in galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGN); however, the connection between the AGN activity and SF in them is less well understood. To explore this connection on scales of a few tens of parsecs to a few tens of kiloparsecs and larger, we carried out an investigation of SF in seven Seyfert-type AGN and one low-ionization nuclear emission-line region galaxy, using observations with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope on board AstroSat in the near-ultraviolet (2000–3000 Å) and far-ultraviolet (1300−1800 Å) bands. A total of 1742 star-forming regions were identified, having size scales of 0.010–63.642 kpc2. Considering all the galaxies, we found a positive correlation between their total surface density of SF (ΣSFR) and extinction. For five galaxies, namely NGC 1365, NGC 4051, NGC 4321, NGC 5033, and NGC 6814, we found a gradual decrease of both extinction and ΣSFR from the centre to the outer regions. Four sources are found to lie in the main sequence of star-forming galaxies, and the other four lie away from it. We found the ratio of the star formation rate (SFR) in the nuclear region to the total SFR to be positively correlated with the Eddington ratio. This points to the influence of AGN in enhancing the SF characteristics of the hosts. We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 817 during an intensive multiwavelength reverberation mapping campaign for 16 months. Here, we examine the behavior of narrow UV absorption lines seen in the Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph spectra, both during the campaign and in other epochs extending over 14 yr. We conclude that, while the narrow absorption outflow system (at −3750 km s−1 with FWHM = 177 km s−1) responds to the variations of the UV continuum as modified by the X-ray obscurer, its total column density (log N H = 19.5 − 0.13 + 0.61 cm−2) did not change across all epochs. The adjusted ionization parameter (scaled with respect to the variations in the hydrogen-ionizing continuum flux) is log U H = −1.0 − 0.3 + 0.1 . The outflow is located at a distance smaller than 38 pc from the central source, which implies a hydrogen density of n H > 3000 cm−3. The absorption outflow system only covers the continuum emission source and not the broad emission line region, which suggests that its transverse size is small (< 1016 cm), with potential cloud geometries ranging from spherical to elongated along the line of sight. Gaseous, disc–halo interfaces are shaped by processes that are critical to galaxy evolution, including gas accretion and outflows. Extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) layers are characterized by scale heights that largely exceed those predicted by their temperature, suggesting the presence of turbulent energy injection from star-formation feedback. However, the origin of this large-scale height remains uncertain. To explore the connection between eDIG and star-forming discs, we present a spatially resolved case study of a nearby pair of sub- |$L_*$|⁠ , intermediately inclined disc galaxies NGC 3511/3513. We decompose optical nebular lines observed using long-slit spectroscopy into narrow and broad velocity components. In NGC 3511, the broad component has three distinctive characteristics in comparison to the narrow component: (1) significantly higher velocity dispersions (a median |$\langle \sigma \rangle _{\text{Broad}} = 24$|  km s |$^{-1}$| compared to |$\langle \sigma \rangle _{\text{Narrow}} = 13$|  km s |$^{-1}$|⁠), (2) elevated [N  ii ] |$\lambda$| 6583/H |$\alpha$| and [S  ii ] |$\lambda$| 6716/H |$\alpha$| line ratios, and (3) a rotational velocity lag. These characteristics support the origin of the broad component in an extraplanar, gaseous disc. In NGC 3513, the broad component reveals disc–halo circulation via localized outflows at radius |$\lesssim 1$|  kpc. For NGC 3511, we test a vertical hydrostatic equilibrium model with pressure support supplied by thermal and turbulent motions. Under this assumption, the eDIG velocity dispersion corresponds to a scale height |$h_{z} \gtrsim 0.2 - 0.4$|  kpc at |$R = 3 - 5$|  kpc, a factor of a few above the thermal scale height (⁠|$h_{z} \lesssim 0.1$|  kpc). We report on the discovery of one of the most extreme cases of high-frequency radio variability ever measured in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), observed on time-scales of days and exhibiting variability amplitudes of 3–4 orders of magnitude. These sources, all radio-weak narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, were discovered some years ago at Aalto University Metsähovi Radio Observatory (MRO) based on recurring flaring at 37 GHz, strongly indicating the presence of relativistic jets. In subsequent observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) at 1.6, 5.2, and 9.0 GHz no signs of jets were seen. To determine the cause of their extraordinary behaviour, we observed them with the JVLA at 10, 15, 22, 33, and 45 GHz, and with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 15 GHz. These observations were complemented with single-dish monitoring at 37 GHz at MRO, and at 15 GHz at Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO). Intriguingly, all but one source either have a steep radio spectrum up to 45 GHz, or were not detected at all. Based on the 37 GHz data, the time-scales of the radio flares are a few days, and the derived variability brightness temperatures and variability Doppler factors are comparable to those seen in blazars. We discuss alternative explanations for their extreme behaviour, but so far no definite conclusions can be made. These sources exhibit radio variability at a level rarely, if ever, seen in AGN. The gamma-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies are a unique class of objects that launch powerful jets from relatively lower-mass black hole systems compared to the Blazars. However, the black hole masses estimated from the total flux spectrum suffer from the projection effect, making the mass measurement highly uncertain. The polarized spectrum provides a unique view of the central engine through scattered light. We performed spectropolarimetric observations of the gamma-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H0323 + 342 using SPOL/MMT. The degree of polarization and polarization angle are 0.122 |$\pm$| 0.040 per cent and 142 |$\pm$| 9 degrees, while the H |$\alpha$| line is polarized at 0.265 |$\pm$| 0.280 per cent. We decomposed the total flux spectrum and estimated broad H |$\alpha$| full width at half maximum of 1015 km s |$^{-1}$| . The polarized flux spectrum shows a broadening similar to the total flux spectrum, with a broadening ratio of 1.22. The Monte Carlo radiative transfer code 'STOKES' applied to the data provides the best fit for a small viewing angle of 9–24 deg and a small optical depth ratio between the polar and the equatorial scatters. A thick broad-line region with significant scale height can explain a similar broadening of the polarized spectrum compared to the total flux spectrum with a small viewing angle. We have characterized the ionized, neutral, and warm molecular gas kinematics in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3227 using observations from the Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, Apache Point Observatory's Kitt Peak Ohio State Multi-Object Spectrograph, Gemini-North's Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrometer, and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. We fit multiple Gaussians to several spatially resolved emission lines observed with long-slit and integral-field spectroscopy and isolate the kinematics based on apparent rotational and outflowing motions. We use the kinematics to determine an orientation for the bicone along which the outflows travel and find that the biconical structure has an inclination of 40 − 4 + 5 ° from our line of sight and a half-opening angle with an inner and outer boundary of 47 − 2 + 6 ° and 68 − 1 + 1 °, respectively. We observe ionized outflows traveling 500 km s−1 at distances up to 7″ (800 pc) from the supermassive black hole (SMBH) and disturbed ionized gas up to a distance of 15″ (1.7 kpc). Our analysis reveals that the ionized outflows are launched from within 20 pc of the SMBH, at the same location as a bridge of cold gas across the nucleus detected in Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array CO(2–1) observations. We measure a turnover radius where the gas starts decelerating at a distance of 26 ± 6 pc from the active galactic nucleus. Compared to a turnover radius in the range of 31−63 pc from a radiative driving model, we confirm that radiative driving is the dominant acceleration mechanism for the narrow-line region outflows in NGC 3227. Despite the evidence that supermassive black holes (SMBHs) co-evolve with their host galaxy, and that most of the growth of these SMBHs occurs via merger-free processes, the underlying mechanisms which drive this secular co-evolution are poorly understood. We investigate the role that both strong and weak large-scale galactic bars play in mediating this relationship. Using 48 871 disc galaxies in a volume-limited sample from Galaxy Zoo DESI, we analyse the active galactic nucleus (AGN) fraction in strongly barred, weakly barred, and unbarred galaxies up to |$z = 0.1$| over a range of stellar masses and colours. After controlling for stellar mass and colour, we find that the optically selected AGN fraction is |$31.6 \pm 0.9$| per cent in strongly barred galaxies, |$23.3 \pm 0.8$| per cent in weakly barred galaxies, and |$14.2 \pm 0.6$| per cent in unbarred disc galaxies. These are highly statistically robust results, strengthening the tantalizing results in earlier works. Strongly barred galaxies have a higher fraction of AGNs than weakly barred galaxies, which in turn have a higher fraction than unbarred galaxies. Thus, while bars are not required in order to grow an SMBH in a disc galaxy, large-scale galactic bars appear to facilitate AGN fuelling, and the presence of a strong bar makes a disc galaxy more than twice as likely to host an AGN than an unbarred galaxy at all galaxy stellar masses and colours. The nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) IRAS F01004−2237 exhibits 100 kpc scale continuum emission at radio wavelengths. The absence of extended X-ray emission in IRAS F01004−2237 has suggested an active galactic nucleus (AGN) origin for the extended radio emission, whose properties and role in merging systems still need to be better understood. We present the results of multifrequency observations of IRAS F01004−2237 conducted by the Very Long Baseline Array at 2.3 and 8.4 GHz. Compact 8.4 GHz continuum emission was detected on a 1 pc scale in the nuclear region with an intrinsic brightness temperature of 108.1 K suggesting that the radio source originated from an AGN, potentially driving the extended emission. In contrast, no significant emission was observed at 2.3 GHz, indicating the presence of low-frequency absorption. This absorption cannot be attributed solely to synchrotron self-absorption; alternatively, free–free absorption due to thermal plasma is mainly at work in the spectrum. From combined perspectives, including mid-infrared and X-ray data, the AGN is obscured in a dense environment. The kinetic power of the nonthermal jet, as inferred from the extended emission, can play a more important role in dispersing the surrounding medium than the thermal outflow in IRAS F01004−2237. Context. Ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) have been revealed in a large number of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the past two decades. Their extreme velocities and high ionization states make them a promising candidate for AGN feedback on the evolution of the host galaxy. However, their exact underlying driving mechanism is not yet fully understood. Aims. Given that the variability of UFOs may be used to distinguish among different launching mechanisms, we aim to search for and characterize the responses of the UFO properties to the variable irradiating luminosity. Methods. We perform a high-resolution time- and flux-resolved spectroscopy of archival XMM-Newton observations on six highly accreting narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, selected by UFO detection and sufficient exposure times. The state-of-the-art methods of the blind Gaussian line scan and photoionization model scan are used to identify UFO solutions. We search for ionized winds and investigate the structure of ionized winds and their responses to the luminosity variations. The location, density, and kinetic energy of UFOs are estimated as well. Results. The powerful photoionization model scan reveals three previously unreported UFOs in RE J1034+396, PG 1244+026 and I ZW 1 with a detection significance above 3σ, and two new warm absorbers (WAs) in RE J1034+396. Five out of six (83%) AGN in our sample host multi-phase ionized winds, where outflows in I ZW 1 are energy-conserved. The relatively low-ionization entrained UFOs are discovered in four (66%) AGN of our sample, supporting the shocked outflow interpretation for ionized winds in AGN. We notice that two out of seven (28%) UFOs in our sample seem to respond to the radiation field and three (43%) UFOs hint at a radiatively accelerated nature, requiring further observations. Combined with published works, we do not find any correlations between UFO responses and AGN properties except for a tentative (∼1.8σ) anti-correlation between the UFO acceleration and the Eddington ratio, to be confirmed by further observations and an enlarged sample. The kinetic energy of UFOs, mostly detected in soft X-rays, is found to have a large uncertainty. We, therefore, cannot conclude whether soft X-ray UFOs have sufficient energy to drive the AGN feedback, although they are very promising based on some reasonable assumptions. The primary UFO in I ZW 1 (detected in the hard X-ray) is the only case in our sample to possess conclusively sufficient energy to affect the host galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The optical spectroscopic classification of active galactic nuclei (AGN) into type 1 and type 2 can be understood in the frame of the AGN unification models. However, it remains unclear which physical properties are driving the classification into intermediate sub-types (1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 1.9). To shed light on this issue, we present an analysis of the effect of extinction and AGN and host galaxy luminosities on sub-type determination for a sample of 159 X-ray selected AGN with a complete and robust optical spectroscopic classification. The sample spans a rest-frame 2–10 keV X-ray luminosity range of 1042–1046 erg s−1 and redshifts between 0.05 and 0.75. From the fitting of their ultraviolet-to-mid-infrared spectral energy distributions, we extracted the observed AGN over total AGN+galaxy contrast, optical/ultraviolet line-of-sight extinction, as well as host galaxy and AGN luminosities. The observed contrast exhibits a clear decline with sub-type, distinguishing two main groups: 1.0–5 and 1.8–2. This difference is partly driven by an increase in extinction following the same trend. Nevertheless, 50% of 1.9s and 2s lack sufficient extinction to explain the lack of detection of broad emission lines, unveiling the necessity of an additional effect. Our findings show that 1.8–2s preferentially live in host galaxies with higher luminosities while displaying similar intrinsic AGN luminosities to 1.0–5s. Consequently, the AGN to host galaxy luminosity ratio diminishes, hindering the detection of the emission of the broad emission lines, resulting in the 1.8–2 classification of those with insufficient extinction. Thus, the combination of increasing extinction and decreasing AGN over galaxy luminosity ratio, mainly driven by an increasing host galaxy luminosity, constitutes the main reasons behind the sub-type classification into 1.0–5 and 1.8–2. The detection of blueshifted absorption lines likely associated with ionized iron K-shell transitions in the X-ray spectra of many active galactic nuclei (AGNs) suggests the presence of a highly ionized gas outflowing with mildly relativistic velocities (0.03c–0.6c) named ultra-fast outflow (UFO). Within the SUBWAYS project, we characterized these winds starting from a sample of 22 radio-quiet quasars at an intermediate redshift (0.1 ≤ z ≤ 0.4) and compared the results with similar studies in the literature on samples of local Seyfert galaxies (i.e., 42 radio-quiet AGNs observed with XMM-Newton at z ≤ 0.1) and high redshift radio-quiet quasars (i.e., 14 AGNs observed with XMM-Newton and Chandra at z ≥ 1.4). The scope of our work is a statistical study of UFO parameters and incidence considering the key physical properties of the sources, such as supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass, bolometric luminosity, accretion rates, and spectral energy distribution (SED) with the aim of gaining new insights into the UFO launching mechanisms. We find indications that highly luminous AGNs with a steeper X-ray/UV ratio, αox, are more likely to host UFOs. The presence of UFOs is not significantly related to any other AGN property in our sample. These findings suggest that the UFO phenomenon may be transient. Focusing on AGNs with UFOs, other important findings from this work include: (1) faster UFOs have larger ionization parameters and column densities; (2) X-ray radiation plays a more crucial role in driving highly ionized winds compared to UV; (3) the correlation between outflow velocity and luminosity is significantly flatter than what is expected for radiatively driven winds; (4) more massive black holes experience higher wind mass losses, suppressing the accretion of matter onto the black hole; (5) the UFO launching radius is positively correlated with the Eddington ratio. Furthermore, our analysis suggests the involvement of multiple launching mechanisms, including radiation pressure and magneto-hydrodynamic processes, rather than pointing to a single, universally applicable mechanism. We present the results of a joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR campaign on the active galactic nucleus (AGN) IC 4329A, consisting of 9 × 20 ks XMM-Newton observations, and 5 × 20 ks NuSTAR observations within nine days, performed in August 2021. Within each observation, the AGN is not very variable, and the fractional variability never exceeds 5%. Flux variations are observed between the different observations on timescales of days, with a ratio of 30% of the minimum and maximum 2–10 keV flux. These variations follow the softer-when-brighter behavior typically observed in AGN. In all observations, a soft excess is clearly present. Consistently with previous observations, the X-ray spectra of the source exhibit a cutoff energy between 140 and 250 keV that is constant within the error in the different observations. We detected a prominent component of the 6.4 keV Fe Kα line consistent with being constant during the monitoring, consisting of an unresolved narrow core and a broader component likely originating in the inner accredion disk. We find that the reflection component is weak (Rmax = 0.009 ± 0.002) and most likely originates in distant neutral medium. We also found a warm absorber component together with an ultrafast outflow. Their energetics show that these outflows have enough mechanical power for significant feedback on the environment of the AGN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the Bidimensional Exploration of the warm-Temperature Ionised gaS (BETIS) project, designed for the spatial and spectral study of the diffuse ionised gas (DIG) in a selection of nearby spiral galaxies observed with the MUSE integral-field spectrograph. Our primary objective is to investigate the various ionisation mechanisms at play within the DIG. We analysed the distribution of high- and low-ionisation species in the optical spectra of the sample on a spatially resolved basis. We introduced a new methodology for spectroscopically defining the DIG, optimised for galaxies of different resolutions. Firstly, we employed an innovative adaptive binning technique on the observed datacube based on the spectroscopic signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of the collisional [S II] line to increase the S/N of the rest of the lines including [O III], [O I], and He I. Subsequently, we created a DIG mask by eliminating the emissions associated with both bright and faint H II regions. We also examined the suitability of using Hα equivalent width (EWHα) as a proxy for defining the DIG and its associated ionisation regime. Notably, for EWHα < 3 Å – the expected emission from hot low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES) – the measured value is contingent on the chosen population synthesis technique performed. Our analysis of the showcase sample reveals a consistent cumulative DIG fraction across all galaxies in the sample, averaging around 40%–70%. The average radial distribution of the [N II]/Hα, [S II]/Hα, [O I]/Hα, and [O III]/Hβ ratios are enhanced in the DIG regimes (up to 0.2 dex). It follows similar trends between the DIG regime and the H II regions, as well as the Hα surface brightness (ΣHα), indicating a correlation between the ionisation of these species in both the DIG and the H II regions. The DIG loci in typical diagnostic diagrams are found, in general, within the line ratios that correspond to photoionisation due to the star formation. There is a noticeable offset correspondent to ionisation due to fast shocks. However, an individual diagnosis performed for each galaxy reveals that all the DIG in these galaxies can be attributed to photoionisation from star formation. The offset is primarily due to the contribution of Seyfert galaxies in our sample, which is closely aligned with models of ionisation from fast shocks and galactic outflows, thus mimicking the DIG emission. Our results indicate that galaxies exhibiting active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity should be considered separately when conducting a general analysis of the DIG ionisation mechanisms, since this emission is indistinguishable from high-excitation DIG. The detection of a high-velocity (∼0.3 c) inflow of highly ionized matter during an extended XMM–Newton observation of the luminous Seyfert galaxy PG1211+143 in 2014 provided the first direct evidence of a short-lived accretion event, and an explanation for the powerful winds (UFOs) now recognized as a common property of many luminous Seyfert galaxies. Although the ultra-fast inflow observed at a redshift of 0.483 was detected in only one of seven spacecraft orbits, weaker (lower column) but more persistent absorption is seen at a redshift of 0.123 in the high-exposure soft X-ray (RGS) spectra summed over all seven individual spacecraft orbits. Similar stacking of the higher energy (pn camera) spectra reveals underlying absorption at a redshift of 0.148. Interpreted, conventionally, as a Doppler redshift, the RGS observation indicates a line-of-sight inflow velocity v ∼ 0.038 c and (free-fall) radial location at 1400  Rg , with the higher redshift and ionization in pn camera spectra perhaps detecting that inflow closer to the black hole. A very different explanation would be absorption in matter subject to the strong gravity close to the SMBH, an interpretation supported by the launch of a new UFO in the final spacecraft orbit. We use the large spectroscopic data set of the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field survey to investigate the kinematics and energetics of ionized gas outflows. Using a sample of 598 star-forming galaxies at redshift 1.4 < z < 3.8, we decompose [O  iii ] and |$\rm {H}\,\alpha$| emission lines into narrow and broad components, finding significant detections of broad components in 10 per cent of the sample. The ionized outflow velocity from individual galaxies appears independent of galaxy properties, such as stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), and SFR surface density (ΣSFR). Adopting a simple outflow model, we estimate the mass-, energy-, and momentum-loading factors of the ionized outflows, finding modest values with averages of 0.33, 0.04, and 0.22, respectively. The larger momentum- than energy-loading factors, for the adopted physical parameters, imply that these ionized outflows are primarily momentum driven. We further find a marginal correlation (2.5σ) between the mass-loading factor and stellar mass in agreement with predictions by simulations, scaling as η m |$\propto M_{\star }^{-0.45}$|⁠. This shallow scaling relation is consistent with these ionized outflows being driven by a combination of mechanical energy generated by supernovae explosions and radiation pressure acting on dusty material. In a majority of galaxies, the outflowing material does not appear to have sufficient velocity to escape the gravitational potential of their host, likely recycling back at later times. Together, these results suggest that the ionized outflows traced by nebular emission lines are negligible, with the bulk of mass and energy carried out in other gaseous phases. We investigate the influence of star formation and instantaneous active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback processes on the ionized gas velocity dispersion in a sample of 1285 emission-line galaxies with stellar masses |$\log \, (M_*/\mathrm{ M}_{\odot }) \ge 9$| from the integral-field spectroscopy Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral-field Galaxy Survey. We fit both narrow- and broad-emission-line components using aperture spectra integrated within one effective radius, while ensuring the elimination of velocity differences between the spectra of individual spaxels. Our analysis reveals that 386 (30 per cent) galaxies can be adequately described using a single-emission component while 356 (28 per cent) galaxies require two (broad and narrow) components. Galaxies characterized by high-mass, elevated star formation rate surface density, or type-2 AGN-like emissions tend to feature an additional broad-emission-line component, leading to their classification as double-component galaxies. We explore the correlations between M * and gas velocity dispersions, highlighting that the prominence of the broad component significantly contributes to elevating the gas velocity dispersion. Galaxies displaying AGN-like emission based on optical definitions show enhanced gas velocity dispersions. In star-forming galaxies, both stellar mass and star-formation rate surface density substantially contribute to the velocity dispersion of the narrow component. Increased star-forming activity appears to elevate the velocity dispersion of the narrow component. The broad component exhibits a weaker dependence on stellar mass and is primarily driven by galactic outflows. We suggest that strong star-forming activity leads to the formation of a broad-emission-line component, but the impact on inflating gas velocity dispersion is moderate. On the other hand, AGN-driven outflows appear to be a more important contributor to the elevated velocity dispersion of the ionized gas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a sample of 22 massive galaxies with stellar masses >1010 M⊙ at 3 < z < 4 with deep H and K -band high resolution spectra (R  = 3500–3000) from Keck/MOSFIRE and VLT/KMOS near-infrared spectrographs. We find a large fraction have strong [O  iii ] 5007 and Hβ emission lines with large line widths (σ 100–450 km s−1). We measure the sizes of our galaxies from Hubble Space Telescope images and consider the potential kinematic scaling relations of our sample, and rule out an explanation for these broad lines in terms of galaxy-wide kinematics. Based on consideration of the [O  iii ] 5007/Hβ flux ratios, their location in the mass–excitation diagram, and the derived bolometric luminosities, we conclude that active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their narrow-line regions most likely give rise to this emission. At redshifts 3 < z < 4, we find significantly high AGN fractions in massive galaxies, ranging from 60–70 per cent for the mass range 10 < log (M ⋆/M⊙) < 11, with a lower limit 30 per cent for all galaxies within that redshift range when we apply our most stringent AGN criteria. We also find a considerably lower AGN fraction in massive quiescent galaxies, ranging from 20–30 per cent. These fractions of AGN point to the period between 3 < z < 4 being a time of heightened activity for the development of supermassive black holes in the massive end of the galaxy population and provide evidence for their role in the emergence of the first massive quenched galaxies at this epoch. In terms of the variable nature of normal active galaxy nuclei (AGN) and luminous quasars, a so-called flux variation gradient (FVG) method has been widely utilized to estimate the underlying non-variable host galaxy fluxes. The FVG method assumes an invariable AGN color, but this assumption has been questioned by the intrinsic color variation of quasars and local Seyfert galaxies. Here, using an up-to-date thermal fluctuation model to simulate multi-wavelength AGN variability, we theoretically demonstrate that the FVG method generally overestimates the host galaxy flux; that is, it is more significant for brighter AGN/quasars. Furthermore, we observationally confirm that the FVG method indeed overestimates the host galaxy flux by comparing it to that estimated through other independent methods. We present the study on the relationship between supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their host galaxies using our variability-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) sample (i AB ≤ 25.9 and z ≤ 4.5) constructed from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program Ultradeep survey in the COSMOS field. We estimated the black hole (BH) mass (M BH = 105.5−10 M ⊙) based on the single-epoch virial method and the total stellar mass (M star = 1010−12 M ⊙) by separating the AGN component with spectral energy distribution fitting. We found that the redshift evolution of the BH–stellar mass ratio (M BH/ M star) depends on the M BH, which is caused by no significant correlation between M BH and M star. Variable AGNs with massive SMBHs (M BH > 109 M ⊙) at 1.5 < z < 3 show considerably higher BH–stellar mass ratios (> ∼1%) than the BH–bulge ratios (M BH/ M bulge) observed in the local Universe for the same BH range. This implies that there is a typical growth path of massive SMBHs, which is faster than the formation of the bulge component as final products seen in the present day. For the low-mass SMBHs (M BH < 108 M ⊙) at 0.5 < z < 3, on the other hand, variable AGNs show similar BH–stellar mass ratios with the local objects (∼0.1%), but smaller than those observed at z > 4. We interpret that host galaxies harboring less massive SMBHs at intermediate redshift have already acquired sufficient stellar mass, although high- z galaxies are still in the early stage of galaxy formation relative to those at the intermediate/local Universe. A surprising finding of recent studies is the large number of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) associated with moderately massive black holes (⁠|$\rm \log (M_\bullet /M_\odot)\sim 6-8$|⁠), in the first billion years after the big bang (z > 5). In this context, a relevant finding has been the large fraction of candidate dual AGN, both at large separations (several kpc) and in close pairs (less than a kpc), likely in the process of merging. Frequent black hole merging may be a route for black hole growth in the early universe; however, previous findings are still tentative and indirect. We present JWST /NIRSpec-IFU observations of a galaxy at z  = 7.15 in which we find evidence for a |$\rm \log (M_\bullet /M_\odot)\sim 7.7$| accreting black hole, as traced by a broad component of H β emission, associated with the Broad Line Region (BLR) around the black hole. This BLR is offset by 620 pc in projection from the centroid of strong rest-frame optical emission, with a velocity offset of ∼40 km s–1. The latter region is also characterized by (narrow) nebular emission features typical of AGN, hence also likely hosting another accreting black hole, although obscured (Type 2, narrow-line AGN). We exclude that the offset BLR is associated with Supernovae or massive stars, and we interpret these results as two black holes in the process of merging. This finding may be relevant for estimates of the rate and properties of gravitational-wave signals from the early universe that will be detected by future observatories like LISA. A fundamental goal of modern-day astrophysics is to understand the connection between supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth and galaxy evolution. Merging galaxies offer one of the most dramatic channels for galaxy evolution known, capable of driving inflows of gas into galactic nuclei, potentially fueling both star formation and central SMBH activity. Dual active galactic nuclei (dual AGNs) in late-stage mergers with nuclear pair separations <10 kpc are thus ideal candidates to study SMBH growth along the merger sequence since they coincide with the most transformative period for galaxies. However, dual AGNs can be extremely difficult to confirm and study. Hard X-ray (>10 keV) studies offer a relatively contamination-free tool for probing the dense obscuring environments predicted to surround the majority of dual AGN in late-stage mergers. To date, only a handful of the brightest and closest systems have been studied at these energies due to the demanding instrumental requirements involved. We demonstrate the unique capabilities of HEX-P to spatially resolve the soft and -- for the first time -- hard X-ray counterparts of closely-separated (~2" -- 5") dual AGNs in the local Universe. By incorporating physically-motivated obscuration models, we reproduce realistic broadband X-ray spectra expected for deeply embedded accreting SMBHs. Sizes of narrow emission line regions (NLRs) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) could be estimated by [O  iii ] line luminosity L O3 through the known R NLRs− L O3 empirical relations. Unfortunately, it is not convenient to test the R NLRs− L O3 empirical relations through structure properties of spatially resolved NLRs of large samples of AGNs. In this manuscript, a method is proposed to test the |$R_{\mathrm{ NLRs}}\!\!-\!\!L_{\mathrm{ O3}}^{\sim 0.25}$| empirical relations for AGN NLRs through Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Type-2 AGNs having few orientation effects on NLR sizes expected by the AGN unified model, after considering sizes R fib of SDSS fibre-covered regions. Comparing R fib and R NLRs estimated by L O3, Type-2 AGNs with R fib > R NLRs (Sample-II) and with R fib < R NLRs (Sample-I) should have different physical properties of NLRs. Accepting electron density gradients in AGN NLRs, statistically higher electron densities (traced by lower flux ratio R S2 of [S  ii ] λ6717 Å to [S  ii ] λ6731 Å) could be expected for the Type-2 AGNs in the Sample-I. Then, through the collected 1062 SDSS Type-2 AGNs in the Sample-I and 3658 SDSS Type-2 AGNs in the Sample-II, statistically lower R S2 for the Type-2 AGNs in the Sample-I can be confirmed with confidence level higher than 5σ, even after considering necessary effects. Therefore, the results in this manuscript can provide strong clues to support that the reported |$R_{\mathrm{ NLRs}}~\propto ~L_{\mathrm{ O3}}^{0.25}$| empirical relation is preferred to estimate NLR sizes of SDSS AGNs through SDSS fibre spectroscopic results, and also to support the commonly expected electron density gradients in AGN NLRs. The fourth-DR3 version (4FGL-DR3) of the Fermi -LAT catalogue of γ-ray sources contains ∼1000 objects at a galactic latitude | b | > 10° that are not identified with an optical counterpart. We performed a systematic study of these sources, focusing on 190 objects that have a unique X-ray counterpart in the available Swift /XRT observations. Optical counterparts were then selected, and optical spectra were found in the literature for 33 sources. We found that 21 could be classified as BL Lac objects. Among these, we were able to provide the redshift for eight of them, while for two others we established a lower limit to the redshift by detecting intervening absorption. The other 12 objects display optical spectra with prominent emission lines (0.036 <  z  < 1.65). These spectra are characterized by both broad and narrow emission lines, with the exception of three sources. One of these displays only broad emission lines, while the other two exclusively exhibit narrow lines. On the basis of the radio/optical flux ratio, all BL Lac objects in this study are radio-loud. Four sources out of the 12 with prominent emission lines can be classified as radio-loud, while at least five of the 12 sources with prominent lines are radio-quiet. NGC 4395 is a dwarf type 1 Seyfert galaxy with a possible intermediate-mass black hole of several |$\rm {10^4}$| solar masses in its centre. As a well-studied object, its broad-line region size has been measured via H  |$\rm {\alpha }$| time lag in numerous spectroscopic reverberation mapping (SRM) and narrow-band photometric reverberation mapping (PRM) campaigns. Here, we present its H  |$\rm {\alpha }$| time lag measurement using broad-band photometric data, with the application of our newly developed ICCF-Cut (Interpolation and Cross-Correlation Function - Cut) method as well as the javelin (Just Another Vehicle for Estimating Lags In Nuclei) and χ2 methods. Utilizing the minute-cadence multiband light curves obtained from the |$\rm {2}$| -m Faulkes Telescope North and |$\rm {10.4}$| -m Gran Telescopio Canarias telescopes in recent works, we measured its H  |$\rm {\alpha }$| lag as approximately 40–90 min from broad-band PRM. With the H  |$\rm {\alpha }$| emission line velocity dispersion, we calculated its central black hole mass as |$M_{\rm BH} = (8\pm 4) \times 10^3\ \mathrm{ M}_{\rm \odot }$|⁠. These results are comparable with previous results obtained by narrow-band PRM and SRM, providing further support to an intermediate-mass black hole in NGC 4395. In addition, our study also validates the ICCF-Cut as an effective method for broad-band PRM, which holds the potential for widespread application in the era of large multi-epoch, high-cadence photometric surveys. An emission line at ∼6.7 keV is attributable to an He-like iron K-shell transition, which indicates existence of a thin thermal plasma with a temperature of several keV. Using Suzaku archival data, we searched for the iron K-line from the spiral galaxy NGC 6946, and found it at 6.68 ± 0.07 keV at the 3.1σ level in the central |$r\le {2.^{\prime }5}$| region. The iron line luminosity from the central region was estimated to be (2.3 ± 1.2) × 1037 erg s−1 at a distance of 5.5 Mpc. The origin of the iron emission line is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We conduct an in-depth spectral analysis of ∼1 Ms XMM-Newton data of the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy RE J1034+396. The long exposure ensures high spectral quality and provides us with a detailed look at the intrinsic absorption and emission features toward this target. Two warm-absorber (WA) components with different ionization states ( log (ξ / erg cm s − 1) ∼ 4 and log (ξ / erg cm s − 1) ∼ 2.5 – 3 ) are required to explain the intrinsic absorption features in the Reflection Grating Spectrometer spectra. The estimated outflow velocities are around −1400 km s−1 and −(100–300) km s−1 for the high- and low-ionization WA components, respectively. Both absorbers are located beyond the broad-line region and cannot significantly affect the host environment. We analyze the warm absorbers in different flux states. We also examine the 2007 May observation in the low and high phases of quasiperiodic oscillation (QPO). In contrast to previous analyses showing a negative correlation between the high-ionization WA and the QPO phase, we have found no such variation in this WA component. We discover a broad emission bump in the spectral range of ∼12–18 Å, covering the primary features of the high-ionization WA. This emission bump shows a dramatic change in different source states, and its intensity may positively correlate with the QPO phase. We present the Granger causality (GC) test for the X-ray reverberation analysis of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). If the light curves in the continuum-dominated band help predict (Granger cause) those dominated by reflection, the Granger lags that associate to the intrinsic reverberation lags can be inferred. We focus on six AGNs observed by XMM–Newton , including the sources well-known to exhibit clear X-ray reverberation lags (IRAS 13224−3809 and 1H 0707−495) and those in which reverberation signatures are not well confirmed (MCG–6-30-15, IZW1, Mrk 704, and Mrk 1040). We employ the sliding-window algorithm and estimate the Granger (intrinsic) Fe-L lags along the light curve as the window moves through. This reveals the evolving lags towards the end of some individual observations, suggesting that the corona varies progressively. Occasionally, we observe two clearly separate lags that suggest an extended corona consisting of two zones while producing competing reverberation of two lags. While the GC test is purely hypothetical and might not explain true causality, our conclusion is that the lags are present and could be understood as reverberation lags. Assuming the lags changing solely with the corona, we find that the IRAS 13224−3809 corona varies between ∼10 and 25  r g and sometimes move to ≳50  r g. The corona of 1H 0707−495 and MCG–6-30-15 may be analogous to that of IRAS 13224−3809, while in IZw1, Mrk 704, and Mrk 1040, a more compact corona is expected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results of a search for extended emission-line regions (EELRs) ionized by extant or recently faded active galactic nuclei (AGNs), using [O III] narrow-band imaging and spectroscopic follow-up. The sample includes 198 galaxies in 92 strongly interacting or merging galaxy systems in the range of z  = 0.009–0.0285. Among these, three systems have EELRs extended beyond 10 kpc in projection from the nucleus detected in previous studies. We identify a single new distant emission region, projected 35 kpc from UGC 5941. Our optical spectrum does not detect He II, but its strong-line ratios put this in the same class as securely characterized EELR clouds. The nucleus of UGC 5941 is dominated by recent star formation, preventing detection of any weak ongoing AGN. Overall counts of distant EELRs in this and the previous TELPERION samples give incidence 2–5 per cent depending on galaxy and AGN selection, 20–50 times higher than the Galaxy Zoo EELR survey with its higher surface-brightness threshold and much larger input sample. AGNs in interacting and merging systems have an increased detection rate of 12 ± 6 per cent, while none are detected around non-interacting AGNs. Some of these AGNs are at luminosity low enough to require additional X-ray or far-infrared information to tell whether the EELR ionization level suggests long-term fading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The soft excess in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) may arise through a combination of relativistic reflection and the effects of a warm corona at the surface of the accretion disc. Detailed examination of the soft excess can therefore constrain models of the transport and dissipation of accretion energy. Here, we analyse 34 XMM–Newton observations from 14 type 1 AGNs with the reXcor spectral model that self-consistently combines emission from a warm corona with relativistic reflection assuming a lamppost corona. The model divides accretion energy between the disc, the warm corona, and the lamppost. The XMM–Newton observations span a factor of 188 in Eddington ratio (λobs) and 350 in black hole mass, and we find that a warm corona is a significant contributor to the soft excess for 13 of the 14 AGNs with a mean warm corona heating fraction of 0.51. The reXcor fits reveal that the fraction of accretion energy dissipated in the lamppost is anticorrelated with λobs. In contrast, the relationship between λobs and both the optical depth and the heating fraction of the warm corona appears to transition from an anticorrelation to a correlation at λobs,t ≈ 0.15. Therefore, at least one other physical process in addition to the accretion rate is needed to explain the evolution of the warm corona. Overall, we find that a warm corona appears to be a crucial depository of accretion energy in AGNs across a broad range of λobs and black hole mass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The enormous increase in mid-IR sensitivity and spatial and spectral resolution provided by the JWST spectrographs enables, for the first time, detailed extragalactic studies of molecular vibrational bands. This opens an entirely new window for the study of the molecular interstellar medium in luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). We present a detailed analysis of rovibrational bands of gas-phase CO, H2O, C2H2, and HCN toward the heavily obscured eastern nucleus of the LIRG VV 114, as observed by NIRSpec and the medium resolution spectrograph on the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI MRS). Spectra extracted from apertures of 130 pc in radius show a clear dichotomy between the obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) and two intense starburst regions. We detect the 2.3 μ m CO bandheads, characteristic of cool stellar atmospheres, in the star-forming regions, but not toward the AGN. Surprisingly, at 4.7 μ m, we find highly excited CO (T ex ≈ 700–800 K out to at least rotational level J = 27) toward the star-forming regions, but only cooler gas (T ex ≈ 200 K) toward the AGN. We conclude that only mid-infrared pumping through the rovibrational lines can account for the equilibrium conditions found for CO and H2O in the deeply embedded starbursts. Here, the CO bands probe regions with an intense local radiation field inside dusty young massive star clusters or near the most massive young stars. The lack of high-excitation molecular gas toward the AGN is attributed to geometric dilution of the intense radiation from the bright point source. Accretion of black holes at near-Eddington or super-Eddington rates represents the most powerful episode driving black hole growth, potentially occurring across various types of objects. However, the physics governing accretion and jet–disk coupling in such states remains unclear, primarily due to the difficulty in detecting associated jets, which may emit extremely weakly or exhibit episodic behavior. Only a few near/super-Eddington systems have demonstrated radio activity, and it remains uncertain whether jets exist and what their properties are in super-Eddington active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and ultraluminous X-ray sources. This uncertainty stems mainly from the complex radio emission mix, which includes contributions from jets, star formation activity, photoionized gas, accretion disk wind, and coronal activity. In this work, we conducted high-resolution, very long baseline interferometry observations to investigate jets in the highly accreting narrow-line Seyfert I system I Zw 1. Our observations successfully revealed small-scale jets (with a linear size of ∼45 pc) at both 1.5 and 5 GHz, based on the high radio brightness temperature, radio morphology, and spectral index distribution. Additionally, the parsec-scale jet observed in I Zw 1 displays a knotted morphology reminiscent of other sources accreting at similar rates. In summary, the high accretion rates and jet properties observed in the AGN I Zw 1 may support the AGN/X-ray binary analogy in this extreme state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Continuum reverberation mapping is widely used in studying the accretion disks of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Some indirect evidence and simulations have indicated that the diffuse continuum, especially the strong Balmer continuum from the broad-line region, may contribute to the continuum in the u / U band. Here, we present direct evidence for this contribution. In this work, we apply the ICCF-Cut method to continuum reverberation mapping to extract the possible diffuse continuum light curves of six AGNs, using high-cadence, high-quality, and multiband observations. We find the existence of an outer component out of the accretion disk for each of the six AGNs in the Swift U band. Meanwhile, similar results can be derived with the JAVELIN Photometric Reverberation Mapping Model for four of them. The lags of the outer components are consistent with the predicted Balmer continuum lags, which are about half of the H β lag values. Our result directly reinforces the understanding that an outer component, especially the Balmer continuum in the rest-frame u / U band, can contribute significantly to the continuum reverberation lags of AGNs. We present the results of our identification of 11 X-ray sources detected on the half of the sky in the 4–12 keV energy band on the combined map of the first five all-sky surveys with the Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC telescope onboard the SRG observatory. All these sources were also detected by the SRG/eROSITA telescope in the 0.2–8 keV energy band, whose data have allowed us to improve their positions and to investigate their X-ray spectra. Five of them have been detected in X-rays for the first time, while the remaining ones have already been known previously, but their nature has remained unknown. We have taken optical spectra for nine sources with the 1.6-m AZT-33IK telescope at the Sayan Observatory (the Institute of Solar–Terrestrial Physics, the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences); for two more objects we have analyzed the archival spectra from SDSS and the 6dF survey. The objects are classified as Seyfert galaxies (seven Sy1, three Sy1.9, and one Sy2) at redshifts . Our analysis of the X-ray spectra has revealed a noticeable intrinsic absorption ( cm ) in two of the four Seyfert 2 galaxies (Sy1.9–2). The spectrum of one more of them (SRGA J000132.9+240237) cannot be described within the model of an absorbed Comptonization continuum, which may point to a strong absorption and a significant contribution of the reflected radiation. However, the available SRG all-sky survey data are not enough to obtain reliable constraints on the absorption column density in this object, which is also interesting in that it is radio loud. We present an optical photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the fast-declining hydrogen-rich Type II supernova (SN) 2019nyk. The light curve properties of SN 2019nyk align well with those of other fast-declining Type II SNe, such as SNe 2013by and 2014G. SN 2019nyk exhibits a peak absolute magnitude of −18.09 ± 0.17 mag in the V band, followed by a rapid decline at 2.84  ±  0.03 mag (100 d)−1 during the recombination phase. The early spectra of SN 2019nyk exhibit high-ionisation emission features as well as narrow H Balmer lines, persisting until 4.1 d since explosion, indicating the presence of circumstellar material (CSM) in close proximity. A comparison of these features with other Type II SNe displaying an early interaction reveals similarities between these features and those observed in SNe 2014G and 2023ixf. We also compared the early spectra to literature models, estimating a mass-loss rate of the order of 10−3M⊙ yr−1. Radiation hydrodynamical modelling of the light curve also suggests the mass loss from the progenitor within a short period prior to explosion, totalling 0.16 M⊙ of material within 2900 R⊙ of the progenitor. Furthermore, light curve modelling infers a zero-age main sequence mass of 15 M⊙ for the progenitor, a progenitor radius of 1031 R⊙, and an explosion energy of 1.1 × 1051 erg. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of active galactic nuclei (AGN) offers a robust tool to study the evolution and the growth of the supermassive black-hole population over cosmic time. Owing to the limited area probed by X-ray surveys, optical surveys are routinely used to probe the accretion in the high-redshift Universe z ≥ 3. However, optical surveys may be incomplete because they are strongly affected by dust redenning. In this work we derive the XLF and its evolution at high redshifts (z ≥ 3) using a large sample of AGN selected in different fields with various areas and depths covering a wide range of luminosities. Additionally, we put the tightest yet constraints on the absorption function in this redshift regime. In particular, we used more than 600 soft X-ray selected (0.5 − 2 keV) high-z sources in the Chandra deep fields, the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey, and the XMM-XXL northern field. We derived the X-ray spectral properties for all sources via spectral fitting, using a consistent technique and model. To model the parametric form of the XLF and the absorption function, we used a Bayesian methodology, allowing us to correctly propagate the uncertainties for the observed X-ray properties of our sources and also the absorption effects. The evolution of XLF is in agreement with a pure density evolution model similar to what is witnessed at optical wavelengths, although a luminosity-dependent density evolution model cannot be securely ruled out. A large fraction (∼60%) of our sources are absorbed by column densities of NH ≥ 1023 cm−2, while ∼17% of the sources are Compton-Thick. Our results favour a scenario where both the interstellar medium of the host and the AGN torus contribute to the obscuration. The derived black hole accretion rate density is roughly in agreement with the large-scale cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, if one takes into account the results that the X-ray AGN are hosted by massive galaxies, while it differs from that derived using JWST data. Context. Spiral galaxies M31 and M33 are among the γ-ray sources detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). Aims. We aim to model the broadband non-thermal emission of the central region of M31 (a LAT point source) and of the disk of M33 (a LAT extended source), as part of our continued survey of non-thermal properties of local galaxies that includes the Magellanic Clouds. Methods. We analysed the observed emission from the central region of M31 (R < 5.5 kpc) and the disk-sized emission from M33 (R ∼ 9 kpc). For each galaxy, we self-consistently modelled the broadband spectral energy distribution of the diffuse non-thermal emission based on published radio and γ-ray data. All relevant radiative processes involving relativistic and thermal electrons (synchrotron, Compton scattering, bremsstrahlung, and free–free emission and absorption), along with relativistic protons (π0 decay following interaction with thermal protons), were considered, using exact emissivity formulae. We also used the Fermi-LAT-validated γ-ray emissivities for pulsars. Results. Joint spectral analyses of the emission from the central region of M31 and the extended disk of M33 indicate that the radio emission is composed of both primary and secondary electron synchrotron and thermal bremsstrahlung, whereas the γ-ray emission may be explained as a combination of diffuse pionic, pulsar, and nuclear-BH-related emissions in M31 and plain diffuse pionic emission (with an average proton energy density of 0.5 eV cm−3) in M33. Conclusions. The observed γ-ray emission from M33 appears to be mainly hadronic. This situation is similar to other local galaxies, namely, the Magellanic Clouds. In contrast, we have found suggestions of a more complex situation in the central region of M31, whose emission could be an admixture of pulsar emission and hadronic emission, with the latter possibly originating from both the disk and the vicinity of the nuclear black hole. The alternative modelling of the spectra of M31 and M33 is motivated by the different hydrogen distribution in the two galaxies: The hydrogen deficiency in the central region of M31 partially unveils emissions from the nuclear BH and the pulsar population in the bulge and inner disk. If this were to be the case in M33 as well, these emissions would be outshined by diffuse pionic emission originating within the flat central-peak gas distribution in M33. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Jets powered by AGN in the early Universe ( z ≳ 6 ) have the potential to not only define the evolutionary trajectories of the first-forming massive galaxies but to enable the accelerated growth of their associated SMBHs. Under typical assumptions, jets could even rectify observed quasars with light seed formation scenarios; however, not only are constraints on the parameters of the first jets lacking, observations of these objects are scarce. Owing to the significant energy density of the CMB at these epochs capable of quenching radio emission, observations will require powerful, high angular resolution X-ray imaging to map and characterize these jets. As such, AXIS will be necessary to understand early SMBH growth and feedback. Galaxies' stellar masses, gas-phase oxygen abundances (metallicity), and star formation rates (SFRs) obey a series of empirical correlations, most notably the mass–metallicity relation (MZR) and fundamental metallicity relation (FZR), which relates oxygen abundance to a combination of stellar mass and SFR. However, due to the difficulty of measuring oxygen abundances and SFRs in galaxies that host powerful active galactic nuclei (AGN), to date it is unknown to what extent AGN-host galaxies also follow these correlations. In this work, we apply Bayesian methods to the MaNGA integral field spectrographic (IFS) survey that allow us to measure oxygen abundances and SFRs in AGN hosts, and use these measurements to explore how the MZR and FZR differ between galaxies that do and do not host AGN. We find similar MZRs at stellar masses above |$10^{10.5} \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$|⁠ , but that at lower stellar masses AGN hosts show up to |$\sim 0.2$|  dex higher oxygen abundances. The offset in the FZR is significantly smaller, suggesting that the larger deviation in the MZR is a result of AGN-host galaxies having systematically lower SFRs at fixed stellar mass. However, within the AGN-host sample there is little correlation between SFR and oxygen abundance. These findings support a scenario in which an AGN can halt efficient gas accretion, which drives non-AGN host galaxies to both higher SFR and lower oxygen abundance, resulting in the galaxy evolving off the star-forming main sequence (SFMS). X-ray emission from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) often displays complex and rapid variability, which may provide a glimpse into the detailed thermal and dynamical structure of the accreting gas near the event horizon of the central black hole. The observed variability can be analysed using Fourier transforms of the light curves in multiple energy channels, which can be used to generate Fourier phase lags, corresponding to lags in the time domain. The X-ray time lags may be either soft lags or hard lags, depending on whether the variability in the hard energy channel precedes that in the soft channel or vice versa. The physical explanation for the observed X-ray time lags from AGNs has been puzzling, and several scenarios have been proposed. In this paper, we explore the hypothesis that the X-ray time lags are produced as a result of the reprocessing of iron L-line and K-line seed photons generated via fluorescence, which is driven by a variable incident radiation field. The seed photons are reprocessed by a combination of thermal and bulk Comptonization and spatial reverberation. We assume that the inner region of the accretion flow can be approximated as a hot, geometrically thick ADAF disc. The outer radius of the ADAF region is equal to the shock formation radius, which is located just outside the centrifugal barrier. The time-dependent radiative transfer in the disc is analysed using a Fourier-transformed, vertically averaged transport equation in cylindrical coordinates. We demonstrate that the new model can successfully reproduce the complex X-ray variability data for the Seyfert 1 galaxies 1H 0707–495 and Ark 564. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present new JWST NIRSpec integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data for the luminous infrared galaxy NGC 7469, a nearby (70.6 Mpc) active galaxy with a Seyfert 1.5 nucleus that drives a highly ionized gas outflow and a prominent nuclear star-forming ring. Using the superb sensitivity and high spatial resolution of the JWST instrument NIRSpec IFS, we investigate the role of the Seyfert nucleus in the excitation and dynamics of the circumnuclear gas. Our analysis focuses on the [Fe ii ], H2, and hydrogen recombination lines that trace the radiation/shocked-excited molecular and ionized interstellar medium around the active galactic nucleus (AGN). We investigate gas excitation through H2/Br γ and [Fe ii ]/Pa β emission line ratios and find that photoionization by the AGN dominates within the central 300 pc of the galaxy except in a small region that shows signatures of shock-heated gas; these shock-heated regions are likely associated with a compact radio jet. In addition, the velocity field and velocity dispersion maps reveal complex gas kinematics. Rotation is the dominant feature, but we also identify noncircular motions consistent with gas inflows as traced by the velocity residuals and the spiral pattern in the Pa α velocity dispersion map. The inflow is 2 orders of magnitude higher than the AGN accretion rate. The compact nuclear radio jet has enough power to drive the highly ionized outflow. This scenario suggests that the inflow and outflow are in a self-regulating feeding–feedback process, with a contribution from the radio jet helping to drive the outflow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We selected sources with a steep soft-X-ray-band spectrum with a photon index of Γ > 2.5 – measured by eROSITA on board the Spectrum-Röntgen-Gamma (SRG) – from the eFEDS AGN catalogue as candidates of highly accreting supermassive black holes, and investigated their multi-wavelength properties. Among 601 bright AGN with 0.2−5 keV counts of greater than 100, 83 sources (≈14%) are classified as steep-spectrum sources. These sources have typical 0.5−2 keV luminosities of LSX ≈ 1044 erg s−1 and the majority of them are found at redshifts below z = 1. In comparison with sources with flatter spectra, these sources have, on average, a UV (or optical) to 2 keV luminosity ratio that is larger by ∼0.3 dex and bluer optical-to-UV continuum emission. They also appear to be radio quiet based on the detection rate in the FIRST and VLASS surveys. Their host galaxies – at least in the redshift range of z = 0.2 − 0.8, where the AGN–galaxy decomposition results from the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam imaging are available – tend to be late-type and have smaller stellar masses (M⋆ ∼ 1010.5 M⊙) than those of sources with flatter spectra. These properties are similar to those found in nearby narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, in agreement with the picture that they are AGN with elevated accretion rates and are in the early growth phase of black hole and galaxy co-evolution. However, the steep-spectrum sources are not exclusively narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies; indeed many are broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, as found by a catalogue search. This suggests that these steep-spectrum sources may be black holes generally with high accretion rates but of a wide mass range, including a few objects emitting at LSX ≥ 1045 erg s−1, of which black hole masses can be close to 109 M⊙. We have investigated the formation of optical radiation and refined the set of parameters for the young pre-cataclysmic binary with an sdB-subdwarf V1828 Aql. We have obtained moderate-resolution spectra with the 6-m BTA telescope and multiband light curves with the Zeiss-1000 telescope at the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The method of model stellar atmospheres with an accurate allowance for the gravitational and radiative interaction of the components has been used to calculate the optical radiation from the system. We have found that, despite the high temperature of the primary component, K, the amplitude of the photometric reflection effects limited by the small sizes of the secondary component does not exceed . The emission features in the HI lines forming on the irradiated part of the surface of the cool star, when added with the absorption lines in the spectrum of the sdB-subdwarfs, weaken them by 10–12 and shift them by km s in a narrow range of phases adjacent to the time of the secondary eclipse. As a result, the distortions of the observed radial velocity curves under the action of reflection effects turn out to be much smaller than the measurement errors and cannot be used to determine the component mass ratio from a model analysis. Therefore, to determine the set of parameters for V1828 Aql, we have used the assumption that the mass of the primary component is close to found previously for a large group of sdB-subdwarfs. Based on our model analysis of the observed spectra and light curves for V1828 Aql, we have estimated the atmospheric parameters of the subdwarf and the fundamental parameters of both components. We have found that using the method of model atmospheres in analyzing the reflection effects reduces the estimate of the radius of the cool star by 20 compared to the calculations in the blackbody approximation. In 2015–2021 we carried out observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxy (SyG 1) NGC 7469 in Bessell filters with the 1.5-m telescope of the Maidanak Observatory, which have continued the monitoring of NGC 7469 since 1990. We took CCD frames and performed standard frame processing, including bias correction, sky background subtraction, flat fielding, cosmic-ray particle removal, etc. All our data were obtained on CCD cameras with deep cooling and subarcsecond seeing. We carried out the calibrations using several standard stars in the same frame as the galaxy. The results of our photometry in a 13.5 arcsec aperture are presented graphically in the visibility windows of the observed period. A slow (S) flare was detected on the constructed variability curves in the filters; a slow increase in brightness is observed since 2015, reaching a maximum in 2019. The amplitude of the S flare is 0.5 mag in the filter and decreases to zero in the filter. On the color–color diagrams the colors in a 5 arcsec aperture are bluer than those in a 30 arcsec aperture. We present the results of a comparison between different methods to estimate the power of relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei (AGN). We selected a sample of 32 objects (21 flat-spectrum radio quasars, 7 BL Lacertae objects, 2 misaligned AGN, and 2 changing-look AGN) from the very large baseline array (VLBA) observations at 43 GHz of the Boston University blazar program. We then calculated the total, radiative, and kinetic jet power from both radio and high-energy gamma-ray observations, and compared the values. We found an excellent agreement between the radiative power calculated by using the Blandford and Königl model with 37 or 43 GHz data and the values derived from the high-energy γ -ray luminosity. The agreement is still acceptable if 15 GHz data are used, although with a larger dispersion, but it improves if we use a constant fraction of the γ -ray luminosity. We found a good agreement also for the kinetic power calculated with the Blandford and Königl model with 15 GHz data and the value from the extended radio emission. We measure the bolometric luminosity of a complete and unbiased 12 μ m-selected sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the local Universe. For each galaxy, we used a 10-band radio-to-X-ray spectral energy distribution (SED) to isolate the genuine AGN continuum in each band, including subarcsecond measurements where available, and correcting those contaminated by the host galaxy. We derive the median SED of Seyfert type 1 AGN, Seyferts with hidden broad lines (HBLs), Seyferts of type 2, and LINER nuclei in our sample. The median Seyfert 1 SED shows the characteristic blue bump feature in the UV, but nevertheless, the largest contribution to the bolometric luminosity comes from the IR and X-ray continua. The median SEDs of both HBL and type 2 AGN are affected by starlight contamination in the optical/UV. The median SED of HBL AGN is consistent with that of Seyfert 1s, when an extinction of A V ∼ 1.2 mag is applied. The comprehensive SEDs allowed us to measure accurate bolometric luminosities and derive robust bolometric corrections for the different tracers. The 12 μ m and K -band nuclear luminosities have good linear correlations with the bolometric luminosity, similar to those in the X-rays. We derive bolometric corrections for either continuum bands (K band, 12 μ m, 2–10 keV, and 14–195 keV) or narrow emission lines (mid-IR high-ionization lines of [O iv ] and [Ne v ] and optical [O iii ] 5007 Å) as well as for combinations of IR continuum and line emission. A combination of continuum plus line emission accurately predicts the bolometric luminosity up to quasar luminosities (∼1046 erg s−1). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Supermassive black holes (SMBH) are believed to influence galaxy evolution through AGN (active galactic nuclei) feedback. Galaxy mergers are key processes of galaxy formation that lead to AGN activity and star formation. The relative contribution of AGN feedback and mergers to star formation is not yet well understood. In radio-loud objects, AGN outflows are dominated by large jets. However, in radio-quiet objects, outflows are more complex and involve jet, wind, and radiation. In this review, we discuss the signatures of AGN feedback through the alignment of radio and UV emissions. Current research on AGN feedback is discussed, along with a few examples of studies such as the galaxy merger system MRK 212, the radio-quiet AGN NGC 2639, and the radio-loud system Centaurus A. Multi-frequency observations of MRK 212 indicate the presence of dual AGN, as well as feedback-induced star-forming UV clumps. The fourth episode of AGN activity was detected in radio observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 2639, which also showed a central cavity of 6 kpc radius in CO and UV maps. This indicates that multi-epoch jets of radio-quiet AGN can blow out cold molecular gas, which can further reduce star formation in the center of the galaxies. Recent UV observations of Cen A have revealed two sets of stellar population in the northern star-forming region, which may have two different origins. Recent studies have shown that there is evidence that both positive and negative feedback can be present in galaxies at different scales and times. High-resolution, multi-band observations of large samples of different types of AGN and their host galaxies are important for understanding the two types of AGN feedback and their effect on the host galaxies. The Eigenvector 1 schema, or the main sequence of quasars, was introduced as an analogous scheme to the HR diagram that would allow us to understand the more complex, extended sources - active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that harbor accreting supermassive black holes. The study has spanned more than three decades and has advanced our knowledge of the diversity of Type-1 AGNs from both observational and theoretical aspects. The quasar main sequence, in its simplest form, is the plane between the FWHM of the broad Hβ emission line and the strength of the optical Fe ii emission to the Hβ. While the former allows the estimation of the black hole mass, the latter enables direct measurement of the metal content and traces the accretion rate of the AGN. Together, they allow us to track the evolution of AGN in terms of the activity of the central nuclei, its effect on the line-emitting regions surrounding the AGN, and their diversity making them suitable distance indicators to study the expansion of our Universe. This mini-review aims to provide (i) a brief history leading up to the present day in the study of the quasar main sequence, (ii) introduce us to the many possibilities to study AGNs with the main sequence as a guiding tool, and (iii) highlight some recent, exciting lines of researches at the frontier of this ever-growing field.

The article titled "Correction to: Characterizing X-ray, UV, and optical variability in NGC 6814 using high-cadence Swift observations from a 2022 monitoring campaign" published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society discusses a correction to a previous study on NGC 6814. The authors discovered that an outdated Calibration Database (CALDB) version was used in the original study, leading to significantly larger UV flux densities. The updated results show that the intrinsic AGN variability spectrum aligns with a standard accretion disc, except in the U band. The authors also discuss the inter-band continuum lags and suggest that a significant contribution from diffuse continuum emission in NGC 6814 may explain the observed discrepancies. We measure velocity offsets in the |$\rm{Na {}\rm {\small I}}$| λλ5890, 5896 (⁠|$\rm{Na {}\rm {\small D}}$|⁠) interstellar medium absorption lines to track how neutral galactic winds change as their host galaxies evolve. Our sample of ∼80 000 SDSS spectra at 0.010 < z < 0.325 includes starburst, post-starburst, and quiescent galaxies, forming an evolutionary sequence of declining star formation rate (SFR). We detect bulk flows across this sequence, mostly at higher host stellar masses (log(M */M⊙)) > 10). Along this sequence, the fraction of outflows decreases (76 ± 2 per cent to 65 ± 4 per cent to a 3σ upper limit of 34 per cent), and the mean velocity offset changes from outflowing to inflowing (−84.6 ± 5.9 to −71.6 ± 11.4 to |$76.6\pm 2.3\, \rm km s^{-1}$|⁠). Even within the post-starburst sample, wind speed decreases with time elapsed since the starburst ended. These results reveal that outflows diminish as galaxies age. For post-starbursts, there is evidence for an AGN contribution, especially to the speediest outflows: (1) SFR declines faster in time than outflow velocity, a decoupling arguing against massive stellar feedback; (2) of the few outflows strong enough to escape the interstellar medium (9/105), three of the four hosts with measured emission lines are Seyfert galaxies. For discy starburst galaxies, however, the trends suggest flows out of the stellar disc plane (with outflow 1/2-opening angle > 45°) instead of from the nucleus: the wind velocity decreases as the disc becomes more edge-on, and the outflow fraction, constant at |$\sim 90~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| for disc inclinations i < 45°, steadily decreases from |$\sim 90~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| to 20 per cent for i > 45°.
