Abstract A key goal of environmental policies and circular economy strategies in the construction sector is to convert demolition and industrial wastes into reusable materials. As an industrial by-product, Waste marble (WM), has the potential to replace cement and fine aggregate in concrete which helps with saving natural resources and reducing environmental harm. While many studies have so far investigated the effect of WM on compressive strength (CS), it is undeniable that conducting experimental activities requires time, money, and re-testing with changing materials and conditions. Hence, this study seeks to move from traditional experimental approaches towards artificial intelligence-driven approaches by developing three models—artificial neural network (ANN) and hybrid ANN with ant colony optimization (ACO) and biogeography-based optimization (BBO) to predict the CS of WM concrete. For this purpose, a comprehensive dataset including 1135 data records is employed from the literature. The models’ performance is assessed using statistical metrics and error histograms, and a K-fold cross-validation analysis is applied to avoid overfitting problems, emphasize the models’ reliable predictive capabilities, and generalize them. The statistical metrics indicated that the ANN-BBO model performed best with a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.9950 and root mean squared error (RMSE) of 1.2017 MPa. Besides, the error distribution results revealed that the ANN-BBO outperformed the ANN and ANN-ACO with a narrower range of errors so that 98% of the predicted data points in the training phase by the ANN-BBO model experienced errors in the range of [-10%, 10%], whereas for the ANN-ACO and ANN models, this percentage was 85% and 79%, respectively. Additionally, the study employed SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis to clarify the impact of input variables on prediction accuracy and found that the specimen’s age is the most influential variable. Eventually, to validate the ANN-BBO, a comparison was performed with the results of previous studies’ models.

Abstract Parameter identification of solar photovoltaic (PV) cells is crucial for the PV system modeling. However, finding optimal parameters of PV models is an intractable problem due to the highly nonlinear characteristics between currents and voltages in different environments. To address this problem, whale optimization algorithm (WOA)-based meta-heuristic algorithm has turned out to be a feasible and effective approach. As a highly promising optimization algorithm, different enhanced WOA variants have been proposed. Nevertheless, there has been no comparative study of WOA and its variants for parameter identification of PV models so far. To further investigate and analyze the performance of WOA in the studied problem, this work applied and compared WOA and ten enhanced WOA variants for identifying five PV model parameters. Different evaluation indices including solution accuracy, search robustness, and convergence curve were employed to reveal their performance variation. Based on the simulation results, a multi-model statistical analysis with the Friedman test at a confidence level 0.05 was conducted to rank all algorithms. EWOA that hybridizes the sorting-based differential mutation operator and the Lévy flight strategy ranked first and its performance was further verified. Besides, according to the simulation results, possible effective improvement directions for WOA in tackling this intractable problem are concluded to guide future work.

This paper presents a novel, robust, efficient, and simple optimization algorithm called the Object-Oriented Programming Optimization Algorithm (OOPOA) for tackling constrained and unconstrained optimization problems. The algorithm is inspired by the inheritance concept of Object-Oriented programming languages, where the features of a class are classified into three types according to inheritance probability: public, private, and protected. The object-oriented programming inheritance concept is implemented in the algorithm to update the population for the next generations. The proposed algorithm ensures exploitation by selecting the solution with the highest fitness to be inherited in each iteration. It ensures exploration by applying a mutation process that helps explore wide regions in the search space. The performance of this technique is demonstrated by solving 34 different optimization tasks, including 20 standard benchmark problems, ten IEEE Congress of Evolutionary Computation benchmark test functions, and four constrained real-world engineering design problems.

The complexity of equivalent circuit models of photovoltaic cells and modules poses a difficult task to the parameter extraction methods. Teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) is a potent metaheuristic-based parameter extraction method, but it suffers from insufficient precision and low dependability. This study presented a multi-source guided TLBO through improving its two optimization phases. A multi-source guided approach with one-to-one and step-by-step teaching strategies was designed to guide different learners in the teacher phase. Besides, different strategies based on multiple learners were introduced for learners with different knowledge reserves to strengthen information exchanging. With the improvements, it is advantageous to lessen the likelihood of hitting a local optimum and thereby the global convergence can be accelerated. The resultant method was verified on single diode model, double diode model, and three additional modules. The findings demonstrate that it obtained better solutions in precision and dependability, and stood out from the crowd of algorithms.

This paper introduces a new metaheuristic technique known as the Greater Cane Rat Algorithm (GCRA) for addressing optimization problems. The optimization process of GCRA is inspired by the intelligent foraging behaviors of greater cane rats during and off mating season. Being highly nocturnal, they are intelligible enough to leave trails as they forage through reeds and grass. Such trails would subsequently lead to food and water sources and shelter. The exploration phase is achieved when they leave the different shelters scattered around their territory to forage and leave trails. It is presumed that the alpha male maintains knowledge about these routes, and as a result, other rats modify their location according to this information. Also, the males are aware of the breeding season and separate themselves from the group. The assumption is that once the group is separated during this season, the foraging activities are concentrated within areas of abundant food sources, which aids the exploitation. Hence, the smart foraging paths and behaviors during the mating season are mathematically represented to realize the design of the GCR algorithm and carry out the optimization tasks. The performance of GCRA is tested using twenty-two classical benchmark functions, ten CEC 2020 complex functions, and the CEC 2011 real-world continuous benchmark problems. To further test the performance of the proposed algorithm, six classic problems in the engineering domain were used. Furthermore, a thorough analysis of computational and convergence results is presented to shed light on the efficacy and stability levels of GCRA. The statistical significance of the results is compared with ten state-of-the-art algorithms using Friedman's and Wilcoxon's signed rank tests. These findings show that GCRA produced optimal or nearly optimal solutions and evaded the trap of local minima, distinguishing it from the rival optimization algorithms employed to tackle similar problems. Abstract The novelty of this article lies in introducing a novel stochastic technique named the Hippopotamus Optimization (HO) algorithm. The HO is conceived by drawing inspiration from the inherent behaviors observed in hippopotamuses, showcasing an innovative approach in metaheuristic methodology. The HO is conceptually defined using a trinary-phase model that incorporates their position updating in rivers or ponds, defensive strategies against predators, and evasion methods, which are mathematically formulated. It attained the top rank in 115 out of 161 benchmark functions in finding optimal value, encompassing unimodal and high-dimensional multimodal functions, fixed-dimensional multimodal functions, as well as the CEC 2019 test suite and CEC 2014 test suite dimensions of 10, 30, 50, and 100 and Zigzag Pattern benchmark functions, this suggests that the HO demonstrates a noteworthy proficiency in both exploitation and exploration. Moreover, it effectively balances exploration and exploitation, supporting the search process. In light of the results from addressing four distinct engineering design challenges, the HO has effectively achieved the most efficient resolution while concurrently upholding adherence to the designated constraints. The performance evaluation of the HO algorithm encompasses various aspects, including a comparison with WOA, GWO, SSA, PSO, SCA, FA, GOA, TLBO, MFO, and IWO recognized as the most extensively researched metaheuristics, AOA as recently developed algorithms, and CMA-ES as high-performance optimizers acknowledged for their success in the IEEE CEC competition. According to the statistical post hoc analysis, the HO algorithm is determined to be significantly superior to the investigated algorithms. The Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) has emerged as one of the most captivating swarm intelligence methods, drawing inspiration from the hunting behavior of wolf packs. GWO’s appeal lies in its remarkable characteristics: it is parameter-free, derivative-free, conceptually simple, user-friendly, adaptable, flexible, and robust. Its efficacy has been demonstrated across a wide range of optimization problems in diverse domains, including engineering, bioinformatics, biomedical, scheduling and planning, and business. Given the substantial growth and effectiveness of GWO, it is essential to conduct a recent review to provide updated insights. This review delves into the GWO-related research conducted between 2019 and 2022, encompassing over 200 research articles. It explores the growth of GWO in terms of publications, citations, and the domains that leverage its potential. The review thoroughly examines the latest versions of GWO, categorizing them based on their contributions. Additionally, it highlights the primary applications of GWO, with computer science and engineering emerging as the dominant research domains. A critical analysis of the accomplishments and limitations of GWO is presented, offering valuable insights. Finally, the review concludes with a brief summary and outlines potential future developments in GWO theory and applications. Researchers seeking to employ GWO as a problem-solving tool will find this comprehensive review immensely beneficial in advancing their research endeavors.

Artificial intelligence (AI)-based diagnostic systems provide less error-prone and safer support to clinicians, enhancing the medical decision-making process. This study presents a smart and reliable healthcare framework for detecting Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression. Early detection of AD before the onset of clinical symptoms is the most crucial step in starting timely treatment. To predict the conversion of cognitively normal patients to those with AD, three-dimensional 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) whole-brain neuroimaging methods have been extensively studied. However, depending on the 3D volume, this method is computationally expensive. To solve this problem, we used an approximate rank pooling method originally designed for video action recognition with a 3D MRI volume to obtain a compressed representation of multiple two-dimensional (2D) MRI slices. This study proposes a hybrid multimodal CNN-BiLSTM deep model for AD progression detection, in which the resulting dynamic 2D images are fused with cognitive features. Moreover, a novel explainable AI approach is proposed to provide visual explanations using the resulting longitudinal 2D dynamic images. Temporal explanations were provided by visualizing the affected brain regions captured using longitudinal 2D MRIs. By utilizing a sample of 1,692 subjects with multimodal data from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative dataset, our method was assessed using a 10-fold cross-validation process. The model achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) of 94% using longitudinal 2D three-time-step dynamic image data. The fusion of 2D dynamic images with cognitive features enhanced the performance by 2% in terms of the AUC. Patients who gradually develop AD, show changes in various brain regions. For such patients, our system highlights the critical role of the hippocampus, medial amygdala, caudal hippocampus, and lateral amygdala at the initial time steps. In the late stages of AD, the system detects abnormalities in extra brain regions such as the medial temporal gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, fusiform gyrus, and caudal hippocampus; indicating that patients have completely progressed to AD.

In this paper, a new and effective meta-heuristic method named corona-virus search optimizer (CVSO) is proposed inspired based on the movement and search of the corona-virus among different societies, prevalence, and death of individuals. The CVSO has local and global search suitable balance due to the use of evolutionary strategies as well as appropriate social learning. This algorithm has desirable optimization power, easy implementation and requires only a control parameter. The CVSO algorithm is implemented on 30 modern and standard test functions of CEC2014 and also 10 test functions of CEC2019. The performance and capability of CVSO is compared with new and well-known meta-heuristics including particle swarm optimization (PSO), artificial bee colony (ABC) tree growth algorithm (TGA), and Lion optimization algorithm (LOA), bat algorithm (BA) and harris hawks optimization (HHO). The results showed that the CVSO can be more effective than other algorithms to solve the test functions and also various complex real-world engineering optimization problems in terms of optimization accuracy and convergence rate. Also, the superiority of CVSO is demonstrated in the designing of a hybrid energy system by achieving a lower cost of M$ 2.7492 compared to TGA, LOA, ABC, PSO, BA, and HHO algorithms, which achieve costs of M$ 2.7878, M$ 2.7556, M$ 2.8521, M$ 2.9503, M$ 3.0942, and M$ 2.9614, respectively. In addition, due to the optimal balance between local and global search and strength, it is able to avoid getting stuck in locally optimal solutions while obtaining global optimal solutions with a higher convergence rate than other algorithms. In recent years, many innovative optimization algorithms have been developed. These algorithms have been employed to solve structural damage detection problems as an inverse solution. However, traditional optimization methods such as particle swarm optimization, simulated annealing (SA), and genetic algorithm are constantly employed to detect damages in the structures. This paper reviews the application of SA in different disciplines of structural health monitoring, such as damage detection, finite element model updating, optimal sensor placement, and system identification. The methodologies, objectives, and results of publications conducted between 1995 and 2021 are analyzed. This paper also provides an in-depth discussion of different open questions and research directions in this area.

The whale optimization algorithm (WOA) is a widely used metaheuristic optimization approach with applications in various scientific and industrial domains. However, WOA has a limitation of relying solely on the best solution to guide the population in subsequent iterations, overlooking the valuable information embedded in other candidate solutions. To address this limitation, we propose a novel and improved variant called Pbest-guided differential WOA (PDWOA). PDWOA combines the strengths of WOA, particle swarm optimizer (PSO), and differential evolution (DE) algorithms to overcome these shortcomings. In this study, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the proposed PDWOA algorithm on both benchmark and real-world optimization problems. The benchmark tests comprise 30-dimensional functions from CEC 2014 Test Functions, while the real-world problems include pressure vessel optimal design, tension/compression spring optimal design, and welded beam optimal design. We present the simulation results, including the outcomes of non-parametric statistical tests including the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Friedman test, which validate the performance improvements achieved by PDWOA over other algorithms. The results of our evaluation demonstrate the superiority of PDWOA compared to recent methods, including the original WOA. These findings provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid WOA algorithm. Furthermore, we offer recommendations for future research to further enhance its performance and open new avenues for exploration in the field of optimization algorithms. The Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA) is a recently proposed metaheuristic algorithm that has been shown to perform well in several benchmark tests. The AOA is a metaheuristic that uses the main arithmetic operators’ distribution behavior, such as multiplication, division, subtraction, and addition. This paper proposes a binary version of the Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (BAOA) to tackle the feature selection problem in classification. The algorithm’s search space is converted from a continuous to a binary one using the sigmoid transfer function to meet the nature of the feature selection task. The classifier uses a method known as the wrapper-based approach K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), to find the best possible solutions. This study uses 18 benchmark datasets from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) repository to evaluate the suggested binary algorithm’s performance. The results demonstrate that BAOA outperformed the Binary Dragonfly Algorithm (BDF), Binary Particle Swarm Optimization (BPSO), Binary Genetic Algorithm (BGA), and Binary Cat Swarm Optimization (BCAT) when various performance metrics were used, including classification accuracy, selected features as well as the best and worst optimum fitness values.

Introduction: In pattern recognition and data mining, feature selection is one of the most crucial tasks. To increase the efficacy of classification algorithms, it is necessary to identify the most relevant subset of features in a given domain. This means that the feature selection challenge can be seen as an optimization problem, and thus meta-heuristic techniques can be utilized to find a solution. Methodology: In this work, we propose a novel hybrid binary meta-heuristic algorithm to solve the feature selection problem by combining two algorithms: Dipper Throated Optimization (DTO) and Sine Cosine (SC) algorithm. The new algorithm is referred to as bSCWDTO. We employed the sine cosine algorithm to improve the exploration process and ensure the optimization algorithm converges quickly and accurately. Thirty datasets from the University of California Irvine (UCI) machine learning repository are used to evaluate the robustness and stability of the proposed bSCWDTO algorithm. In addition, the K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) classifier is used to measure the selected features’ effectiveness in classification problems. Results: The achieved results demonstrate the algorithm’s superiority over ten state-of-the-art optimization methods, including the original DTO and SC, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO), Multiverse Optimization (MVO), Satin Bowerbird Optimizer (SBO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), the hybrid of GWO and GA, and Firefly Algorithm (FA). Moreover, Wilcoxon’s rank-sum test was performed at the 0.05 significance level to study the statistical difference between the proposed method and the alternative feature selection methods. Conclusion: These results emphasized the proposed feature selection method’s significance, superiority, and statistical difference.

Meta-heuristic algorithms have been effectively employed to tackle a wide range of optimisation issues, including structural engineering challenges. The optimisation of the shape and size of large-scale truss structures is complicated due to the nonlinear interplay between the cross-sectional and nodal coordinate pressures of structures. Recently, it was demonstrated that the newly proposed Marine Predator Algorithm (MPA) performs very well on mathematical challenges. The MPA is a meta-heuristic that simulates the essential hunting habits of natural marine predators. However, this algorithm has some disadvantages, such as becoming locked in locally optimal solutions and not exhibiting high exploratory behaviour. This paper proposes two hybrid marine predator algorithms, Nonlinear Marine Predator (HNMPA) and Nonlinear-Chaotic Marine Predator Algorithm (HNCMPA), as improved variations of the marine predator algorithm paired with a hill-climbing (HC) technique for truss optimisation on form and size. The major advantage of these techniques is that they seek to overcome the MPA’s disadvantages by using nonlinear values and prolonging the exploration phase with chaotic values; also, the HC algorithm has been used to avoid locally optimum solutions. In terms of truss optimisation performance, the proposed algorithm is compared to fourteen well-known meta-heuristics, including the Dragonfly Algorithm (DA), Henry Gas Solubility optimisation (HGSO), Arithmetic optimisation Algorithm (AOA), Generalized Normal Distribution Optimisation (GNDO), Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA), Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA), Neural Network Algorithm (NNA), Water Cycle Algorithm (WCA), Artificial Gorilla Troops Optimiser (GTO), Gray Wolf Optimiser (GWO), Moth Flame Optimiser (MFO), Multi-Verse Optimiser (MVO), Equilibrium Optimiser (EO), and Cheetah Optimiser (CO). Furthermore, seven algorithms were chosen to test HNCMPA performance on benchmark optimisation sets, including MPA, MVO, PSO, MFO, SSA, GWO, and WOA. The experiment results demonstrate that the optimisation techniques surpass previously established meta-heuristics in the field of optimisation, encompassing both traditional and CEC problems, by a margin of over 95% in terms of attaining a superior ultimate solution. Additionally, with regards to solving truss optimisation difficulties as a large-scale real-world engineering challenge, the outcomes indicate a performance boost of over 65% in obtaining significantly better solutions for problems involving 260-bar and 314-bar; conversely, in the case of 340-bar issues, the improvement rate is slightly lower at almost 25%.

Abstract This paper introduces a novel algorithm for effective and accurate extraction of non-invasive fetal electrocardiogram (NI-fECG). In NI-fECG based monitoring, the useful signal is measured along with other signals generated by the pregnant women’s body, especially maternal electrocardiogram (mECG). These signals are more distinct in magnitude and overlap in time and frequency domains, making the fECG extraction extremely challenging. The proposed extraction method combines the Grey wolf algorithm (GWO) with sequential analysis (SA). This innovative combination, forming the GWO-SA method, optimises the parameters required to create a template that matches the mECG, which leads to an accurate elimination of the said signal from the input composite signal. The extraction system was tested on two databases consisting of real signals, namely, Labour and Pregnancy. The databases used to test the algorithms are available on a server at the generalist repositories (figshare) integrated with Matonia et al. (Sci Data 7(1):1–14, 2020). The results show that the proposed method extracts the fetal ECG signal with an outstanding efficacy. The efficacy of the results was evaluated based on accurate detection of the fQRS complexes. The parameters used to evaluate are as follows: accuracy (ACC), sensitivity (SE), positive predictive value (PPV), and F1 score. Due to the stochastic nature of the GWO algorithm, ten individual runs were performed for each record in the two databases to assure stability as well as repeatability. Using these parameters, for the Labour dataset, we achieved an average ACC of 94.60%, F1 of 96.82%, SE of 97.49%, and PPV of 98.96%. For the Pregnancy database, we achieved an average ACC of 95.66%, F1 of 97.44%, SE of 98.07%, and PPV of 97.44%. The obtained results show that the fHR related parameters were determined accurately for most of the records, outperforming the other state-of-the-art approaches. The poorer quality of certain signals have caused deviation from the estimated fHR for certain records in the databases. The proposed algorithm is compared with certain well established algorithms, and has proven to be accurate in its fECG extractions.

Ocean Wave energy is becoming a prominent technology, which is considered a vital renewable energy resource to achieve the Net-zero Emissions Plan by 2050. It is also projected to be commercialized widely and become a part of the industry that alters conventional energy technologies in the near future. However, wave energy technologies are not entirely yet developed and mature enough, so various criteria must be optimized to enter the energy market. In order to maximize the performance of wave energy converters (WECs) components, three challenges are mostly considered: Geometry, Power Take-off (PTO) parameters, and WECs’ layout. As each of such challenges plays a meaningful role in harnessing the maximum power output, this paper systematically reviews applied state-of-the-art optimization techniques, including standard, hybrid, cooperative, bi-level and combinatorial strategies. Due to the importance of fidelity and computational cost in numerical methods, we also discuss approaches to analyzing WECs interactions’ developments. Moreover, the benefits and drawbacks of the popular optimization methods applied to improve WEC parameters’ performance are summarized, briefly discussing their key characteristics. According to the scoping review, using a combination of bio-inspired algorithms and local search as a hybrid algorithm can outperform the other techniques in layout optimization in terms of convergence rate. A review of the geometry of WECs has emphasized the indispensability of optimizing and balancing design parameters with cost issues in multimodal and large-scale problems.

The structural health monitoring (SHM) approach plays a key role not only in structural engineering but also in other various engineering disciplines by evaluating the safety and performance monitoring of the structures. The structural damage detection methods could be regarded as the core of SHM strategies. That is because the early detection of the damages and measures to be taken to repair and replace the damaged members with healthy ones could lead to economic advantages and would prevent human disasters. The optimization-based methods are one of the most popular techniques for damage detection. Using these methods, an objective function is minimized by an optimization algorithm during an iterative procedure. The performance of optimization algorithms has a significant impact on the accuracy of damage identification methodology. Hence, a wide variety of algorithms are employed to address optimization-based damage detection problems. Among different algorithms, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach has been of the most popular ones. PSO was initially proposed by Kennedy and Eberhart in 1995, and different variants were developed to improve its performance. This work investigates the objectives, methodologies, and results obtained by over 50 studies (2005-2020) in the context of the structural damage detection using PSO and its variants. Then, several important open research questions are highlighted. The paper also provides insights on the frequently used methodologies based on PSO, the computational time, and the accuracy of the existing methodologies

Abstract The novel coronavirus (COVID-19), has undoubtedly imprinted our lives with its deadly impact. Early testing with isolation of the individual is the best possible way to curb the spread of this deadly virus. Computer aided diagnosis (CAD) provides an alternative and cheap option for screening of the said virus. In this paper, we propose a convolution neural network (CNN)-based CAD method for COVID-19 and pneumonia detection from chest X-ray images. We consider three input types for three identical base classifiers. To capture maximum possible complementary features, we consider the original RGB image, Red channel image and the original image stacked with Robert's edge information. After that we develop an ensemble strategy based on the technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution (TOPSIS) to aggregate the outcomes of base classifiers. The overall framework, called TOPCONet, is very light in comparison with standard CNN models in terms of the number of trainable parameters required. TOPCONet achieves state-of-the-art results when evaluated on the three publicly available datasets: (1) IEEE COVID-19 dataset + Kaggle Pneumonia Dataset, (2) Kaggle Radiography dataset and (3) COVIDx.

Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) systems generate medical data transmissions between patients, medical experts, and medical centers over public networks, which require high levels of security to protect the content of medical images and the personal information they contain. In this paper, we propose a new stego image encryption scheme based on a new secret image compression method, wavelet transformation, QR decomposition of the cover image, and a new chaotic map. The secret image is compressed by the Hahn-Krawtchouk hybrid quaternion square moments (HK-HQSM), which are optimized by a new hybrid metaheuristic algorithm based on the Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA) and the Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA). To increase the security level when transmitting the proposed stego images over public networks, we introduce a new chaotic map based on the 2D fractional Henon map to encrypt the stego image. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed steganography scheme for IoMT, we implemented this scheme on a low-cost Raspberry Pi 4 hardware board. The results of the performed numerical experiments show that our method is secure and provides exceptional robustness against common standard image processing attacks (steganalysis attacks). The results also demonstrate that our strategy is able to work efficiently and quickly when implemented on a Raspberry Pi board.

Abstract Motivated by the hunting strategies of cheetahs, this paper proposes a nature-inspired algorithm called the cheetah optimizer (CO). Cheetahs generally utilize three main strategies for hunting prey, i.e., searching, sitting-and-waiting, and attacking. These strategies are adopted in this work. Additionally, the leave the pray and go back home strategy is also incorporated in the hunting process to improve the proposed framework's population diversification, convergence performance, and robustness. We perform intensive testing over 14 shifted-rotated CEC-2005 benchmark functions to evaluate the performance of the proposed CO in comparison to state-of-the-art algorithms. Moreover, to test the power of the proposed CO algorithm over large-scale optimization problems, the CEC2010 and the CEC2013 benchmarks are considered. The proposed algorithm is also tested in solving one of the well-known and complex engineering problems, i.e., the economic load dispatch problem. For all considered problems, the results are shown to outperform those obtained using other conventional and improved algorithms. The simulation results demonstrate that the CO algorithm can successfully solve large-scale and challenging optimization problems and offers a significant advantage over different standards and improved and hybrid existing algorithms. Efficient exploration in multi-robot systems is significantly influenced by the initial start positions of the robots. This paper introduces the hybrid cheetah exploration technique with intelligent initial configuration (HCETIIC), a novel strategy explicitly designed to optimize exploration efficiency across varying initial start configurations: uniform distribution, centralized position, random positions, perimeter positions, clustered positions, and strategic positions. To establish the effectiveness of HCETIIC, we engage in a comparative analysis with four other prevalent hybrid methods in the domain. These methods amalgamate the principles of coordinated multi-robot exploration (CME) with different metaheuristic algorithms and have demonstrated compelling results in their respective studies. The performance comparison is based on essential measures such as runtime, the percentage of the explored area, and failure rate. The empirical results reveal that the proposed HCETIIC method consistently outperforms the compared strategies across different start positions, thereby emphasizing its considerable potential for enhancing efficiency in multi-robot exploration tasks across a wide range of real-world scenarios. This research underscores the critical, yet often overlooked, role of the initial robot configuration in multi-robot exploration, establishing a new direction for further improvements in this field.

Spam emails have become a pervasive issue in recent years, as internet users receive increasing amounts of unwanted or fake emails. To combat this issue, automatic spam detection methods have been proposed, which aim to classify emails into spam and non-spam categories. Machine learning techniques have been utilized for this task with considerable success. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to spam email detection by presenting significant advancements to the Dandelion Optimizer (DO) algorithm. The DO is a relatively new nature-inspired optimization algorithm inspired by the flight of dandelion seeds. While the DO shows promise, it faces challenges, especially in high-dimensional problems such as feature selection for spam detection. Our primary contributions focus on enhancing the DO algorithm. Firstly, we introduce a new local search algorithm based on flipping (LSAF), designed to improve the DO’s ability to find the best solutions. Secondly, we propose a reduction equation that streamlines the population size during algorithm execution, reducing computational complexity. To showcase the effectiveness of our modified DO algorithm, which we refer to as the Improved DO (IDO), we conduct a comprehensive evaluation using the Spam base dataset from the UCI repository. However, we emphasize that our primary objective is to advance the DO algorithm, with spam email detection serving as a case study application. Comparative analysis against several popular algorithms, including Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), the Genetic Algorithm (GA), Generalized Normal Distribution Optimization (GNDO), the Chimp Optimization Algorithm (ChOA), the Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA), Ant Lion Optimizer (ALO), and the Dragonfly Algorithm (DA), demonstrates the superior performance of our proposed IDO algorithm. It excels in accuracy, fitness, and the number of selected features, among other metrics. Our results clearly indicate that the IDO overcomes the local optima problem commonly associated with the standard DO algorithm, owing to the incorporation of LSAF and the reduction in equation methods. In summary, our paper underscores the significant advancement made in the form of the IDO algorithm, which represents a promising approach for solving high-dimensional optimization problems, with a keen focus on practical applications in real-world systems. While we employ spam email detection as a case study, our primary contribution lies in the improved DO algorithm, which is efficient, accurate, and outperforms several state-of-the-art algorithms in various metrics. This work opens avenues for enhancing optimization techniques and their applications in machine learning.

The Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA) outperforms well-known algorithms such as particle swarm optimizers and grey wolf optimizers in complex optimization challenges. However, like most meta-heuristic algorithms, SSA suffers from slow convergence and stagnation in the best local solution. In this study, a Salp swarm algorithm (SSA) is combined with a local escaping operator (LEO) to overcome some inherent limitations of the original SSA. SSALEO is a novel search technique that accounts for population diversity, the imbalance between exploitation and exploration, and the SSA algorithm’s premature convergence. By implementing LEO in SSALEO, the search slowdown in SSA is eliminated, and the local search efficiency of swarm agents is improved. The proposed SSALEO method is tested using the CEC 2017 benchmark with 50 and 100 decision variables, seven CEC2008lsgo test functions with 200, 500, and 1000 decision variables, and its performance was compared to other metaheuristic algorithms (MAs) and advanced algorithms, including seven Salp swarm variants. The comparisons show that SSA greatly benefits from LEO by enhancing the quality and accelerating its solutions’ convergence rate. The SSALEO was then assessed using a benchmark set of seven well-known constrained design challenges in various engineering domains defined in the CEC 2020 conference benchmark. Friedman and Wilcoxon rank-sum statistical tests are also used to examine the results. According to experimental data and statistical tests, the SSALEO algorithm is very competitive and often superior to the algorithms used in the studies. Further, the proposed approach can be viewed as a special LSGO optimizer whose performance exceeds that of specialized state-of-the-art algorithms like CMA-ES and SHADE.

This paper proposes a Sine Cosine hybrid optimization algorithm with Modified Whale Optimization Algorithm (SCMWOA). The goal is to leverage the strengths of WOA and SCA to solve problems with continuous and binary decision variables. The SCMWOA algorithm is first tested on nineteen datasets from the UCI Machine Learning Repository with different numbers of attributes, instances, and classes for feature selection. It is then employed to solve several benchmark functions and classical engineering case studies. The SCMWOA algorithm is applied for solving constrained optimization problems. The two tested examples are the welded beam design and the tension/compression spring design. The results emphasize that the SCMWOA algorithm outperforms several comparative optimization algorithms and provides better accuracy compared to other algorithms. The statistical analysis tests, including one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Wilcoxon’s rank-sum, confirm that the SCMWOA algorithm performs better.

This research proposes an Archive-based Multi-Objective Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (MAOA) as an alternative to the recently established Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA) for multi-objective problems (MAOA). The original AOA approach was based on the distribution behavior of vital mathematical arithmetic operators, such as multiplication, division, subtraction, and addition. The idea of the archive is introduced in MAOA, and it may be used to find non-dominated Pareto optimum solutions. The proposed method is tested on seven benchmark functions, ten CEC-2020 mathematic functions, and eight restricted engineering design challenges to determine its suitability for solving real-world engineering difficulties. The experimental findings are compared to five multi-objective optimization methods (Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO), Multi-Objective Slap Swarm Algorithm (MSSA), Multi-Objective Ant Lion Optimizer (MOALO), Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (NSGA2) and Multi-Objective Grey Wolf Optimizer (MOGWO) reported in the literature using multiple performance measures. The empirical results show that the proposed MAOA outperforms existing state-of-the-art multi-objective approaches and has a high convergence rate.

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is one of the most well-regarded swarm-based algorithms in the literature. Although the original PSO has shown good optimization performance, it still severely suffers from premature convergence. As a result, many researchers have been modifying it resulting in a large number of PSO variants with either slightly or significantly better performance. Mainly, the standard PSO has been modified by four main strategies: modification of the PSO controlling parameters, hybridizing PSO with other well-known meta-heuristic algorithms such as genetic algorithm (GA) and differential evolution (DE), cooperation and multi-swarm techniques. This paper attempts to provide a comprehensive review of PSO, including the basic concepts of PSO, binary PSO, neighborhood topologies in PSO, recent and historical PSO variants, remarkable engineering applications of PSO, and its drawbacks. Moreover, this paper reviews recent studies that utilize PSO to solve feature selection problems. Finally, eight potential research directions that can help researchers further enhance the performance of PSO are provided.

Electroencephalogram signals (EEG) have provided biometric identification systems with great capabilities. Several studies have shown that EEG introduces unique and universal features besides specific strength against spoofing attacks. Essentially, EEG is a graphic recording of the brain’s electrical activity calculated by sensors (electrodes) on the scalp at different spots, but their best locations are uncertain. In this paper, the EEG channel selection problem is formulated as a binary optimization problem, where a binary version of the Grey Wolf Optimizer (BGWO) is used to find an optimal solution for such an NP-hard optimization problem. Further, a Support Vector Machine classifier with a Radial Basis Function kernel (SVM-RBF) is then considered for EEG-based biometric person identification. For feature extraction purposes, we examine three different auto-regressive coefficients. A standard EEG motor imagery dataset is employed to evaluate the proposed method, including four criteria: (i) Accuracy, (ii) F-Score, (iii) Recall, and (v) Specificity. In the experimental results, the proposed method (named BGWO-SVM) obtained 94.13% accuracy using only 23 sensors with 5 auto-regressive coefficients. Besides, BGWO-SVM finds electrodes not too close to each other to capture relevant information all over the head. As concluding remarks, BGWO-SVM achieved the best results concerning the number of selected channels and competitive classification accuracies against other meta-heuristics algorithms.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) system is one of the most significant forms of renewable energy resources, and it requires accuracy to assess, design, and extraction of its parameters. Several methods have been extensively applied to mimic the nonlinearity and multi-model behavior of the PV system. However, there is no method to date that can guarantee the extracted parameter of the PV model is the most accurate one. Therefore, this paper presents a unique approach known as Hybridized Arithmetic Operation Algorithm based on Efficient Newton Raphson (HAOAENR) to experimentally extract the parameters of the single-diode and double-diode PV models at the variability of the climatic changes. Firstly, the objective function is efficiently designed to roughly predict the initial root values of the PV equation. Secondly, the Lévy flight and Brownian strategies are integrated in the four operators of AOA to thoroughly analyze the feature space of this problem. Additionally, the four operators of the AOA is divided into two phases to equilibrium between the exploration and exploitation tendencies. Furthermore, the chaotic map and robust mutation techniques are systematically employed in the beginning and halves of generations to ensure the algorithm can reach globally at few numbers iterations. Finally, a nonlinearly adjustable damping parameter of the Levenberg-Marquardt technique is linked with the NR method to replicate the fluctuation behaviours of the PV models. The experimental findings revealed that the proposed HAOAENR outperformed all other methods found in the literature, with average RMSE values close to zero values for both PV models.

Metaheuristic algorithms have successfully been used to solve any type of optimization problem in the field of structural engineering. The newly proposed Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA) has recently been presented for mathematical problems. The AOA is a metaheuristic that uses the main arithmetic operators’ distribution behavior, such as multiplication, division, subtraction, and addition in mathematics. In this paper, a dynamic version of the arithmetic optimization algorithm (DAOA) is presented. During an optimization process, a new candidate solution change to regulate exploration and exploitation in a dynamic version in each iteration. The most remarkable attribute of DAOA is that it does not need to make any effort to preliminary fine-tuning parameters relative to the most present metaheuristic. Also, the new accelerator functions are added for a better search phase. To evaluate the performance of both the AOA and its dynamic version, minimizing the weight of several truss structures under frequency bound is tested. These algorithms ’ efficiency is obtained by five classical engineering problems and optimizing different truss structures under various loading conditions and limitations.

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have rapid real developments during the last decade due to their simple implementation at low cost, easy network maintenance, and reliable service coverage. Despite these properties, the nodes placement of such networks imposes an important research issue for network operators and influences strongly the WMNs performance. This challenging issue is known to be an NP-hard problem, and solving it using approximate optimization algorithms (i.e. heuristic and meta-heuristic) is essential. This motivates our attempts to present an application of the Coyote Optimization Algorithm (COA) to solve the mesh routers placement problem in WMNs in this work. Experiments are conducted on several scenarios under different settings, taking into account two important metrics such as network connectivity and user coverage. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and merits of COA in finding optimal mesh routers locations when compared to other optimization algorithms such as Firefly Algorithm (FA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Bat Algorithm (BA), African Vulture Optimization Algorithm (AVOA), Aquila Optimizer (AO), Bald Eagle Search optimization (BES), Coronavirus herd immunity optimizer (CHIO), and Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA).

Stock market prediction is the process of determining the value of a company's shares and other financial assets in the future. This paper proposes a new model where Altruistic Dragonfly Algorithm (ADA) is combined with Least Squares Support Vector Machine (LS-SVM) for stock market prediction. ADA is a meta-heuristic algorithm which optimizes the parameters of LS-SVM to avoid local minima and overfitting, resulting in better prediction performance. Experiments have been performed on 12 datasets and the obtained results are compared with other popular meta-heuristic algorithms. The results show that the proposed model provides a better predictive ability and demonstrate the effectiveness of ADA in optimizing the parameters of LS-SVM.

Technology for anticipating wind speed can improve the safety and stability of power networks with heavy wind penetration. Due to the unpredictability and instability of the wind, it is challenging to accurately forecast wind power and speed. Several approaches have been developed to improve this accuracy based on processing time series data. This work proposes a method for predicting wind speed with high accuracy based on a novel weighted ensemble model. The weight values in the proposed model are optimized using an adaptive dynamic grey wolf-dipper throated optimization (ADGWDTO) algorithm. The original GWO algorithm is redesigned to emulate the dynamic group-based cooperative to address the difficulty of establishing the balance between exploration and exploitation. Quick bowing movements and a white breast, which distinguish the dipper throated birds hunting method, are employed to improve the proposed algorithm exploration capability. The proposed ADGWDTO algorithm optimizes the hyperparameters of the multi-layer perceptron (MLP), K-nearest regressor (KNR), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) regression models. A dataset from Kaggle entitled Global Energy Forecasting Competition 2012 is employed to assess the proposed algorithm. The findings confirm that the proposed ADGWDTO algorithm outperforms the literature's state-of-the-art wind speed forecasting algorithms. The proposed binary ADGWDTO algorithm achieved average fitness of 0.9209 with a standard deviation fitness of 0.7432 for feature selection, and the proposed weighted optimized ensemble model (Ensemble using ADGWDTO) achieved a root mean square error of 0.0035 compared to state-of-the-art algorithms. The proposed algorithm's stability and robustness are confirmed by statistical analysis of several tests, such as one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Wilcoxon's rank-sum.

Monkey king evolution (MKE) is a population-based differential evolutionary algorithm in which the single evolution strategy and the control parameter affect the convergence and the balance between exploration and exploitation. Since evolution strategies have a considerable impact on the performance of algorithms, collaborating multiple strategies can significantly enhance the abilities of algorithms. This is our motivation to propose a multi-trial vector-based monkey king evolution algorithm named MMKE. It introduces novel best-history trial vector producer (BTVP) and random trial vector producer (RTVP) that can effectively collaborate with canonical MKE (MKE-TVP) using a multi-trial vector approach to tackle various real-world optimization problems with diverse challenges. It is expected that the proposed MMKE can improve the global search capability, strike a balance between exploration and exploitation, and prevent the original MKE algorithm from converging prematurely during the optimization process. The performance of the MMKE was assessed using CEC 2018 test functions, and the results were compared with eight metaheuristic algorithms. As a result of the experiments, it is demonstrated that the MMKE algorithm is capable of producing competitive and superior results in terms of accuracy and convergence rate in comparison to comparative algorithms. Additionally, the Friedman test was used to examine the gained experimental results statistically, proving that MMKE is significantly superior to comparative algorithms. Furthermore, four real-world engineering design problems and the optimal power flow (OPF) problem for the IEEE 30-bus system are optimized to demonstrate MMKE's real applicability. The results showed that MMKE can effectively handle the difficulties associated with engineering problems and is able to solve single and multi-objective OPF problems with better solutions than comparative algorithms.

Human detection is an important task in computer vision. It is one of the most important tasks in global security and safety monitoring. In recent days, Deep Learning has improved human detection technology. Despite modern techniques, there are very few optimal techniques to construct networks with a small size, deep architecture, and fast training time while maintaining accuracy. ReSTiNet is a novel small convolutional neural network that overcomes the problems of network size, detection speed, and accuracy. The developed ReSTiNet contains fire modules by evaluating their number and position in the network to minimize the model parameters and network size. To improve the detection speed and accuracy of ReSTiNet, the residual block within the fire modules is carefully designed to increase the feature propagation and maximize the information flow in the network. The developed approach compresses the well-known Tiny-YOLO architecture while improving the following features: (i) small model size, (ii) faster detection speed, (iii) resolution of overfitting, and (iv) better performance than other compact networks such as SqueezeNet and MobileNet in terms of mAP on the Pascal VOC and MS COCO datasets.ReSTiNet is 10.7 MB, five times smaller than Tiny-YOLO. On Tesla k80, mAP is 27.3% for MS COCO and 63.74% for PASCAL VOC. The validation of the proposed ReSTiNet model has been done on INRIA person dataset using the Tesla K80. • All the necessary steps, algorithms, and mathematical formulas for building the net- work are provided. • The network is small in size but has a faster detection speed with high accuracy.

Abstract In this paper, a new method in forecasting the horizontal displacement of diaphragm wall (D.W.) for high-rise buildings is introduced. A new stochastic optimizer, called Planet Optimization Algorithm (P.O.A.), is employed to assess how proper finite element (F.E.) simulation is against field data. The process is adopted for a real phased excavation measured at the field. To automatically run the iterative optimization tasks, a source code is constructed directly in the Geotechnical Engineering Software (PLAXIS) by using Python to ensure that the operation between optimization algorithm and F.E. simulations are smooth to guarantee the accuracy of the complex calculation for the soil problem. The proposed process consists of two steps. (1) The parameters will be optimized at the early phases of the excavation. (2) The responses of D.W. displacements are forecasted at the subsequent phases. The aim of the process is to predict the displacements of D.W. of the building from the result of the nearby excavation or to provide early warning about the risks of excavation that may happen under vital phases. The proposed procedure also provides an effective method for optimization-based soil parameters updating in real engineering practice.

Vibration-based damage detection tools are frequently employed because of their advantages over other non-destructive techniques. This paper presents an improved Frequency Response Function (FRF) indicator for damage identification in complex structures. To verify the effectiveness of the improved damage indicator, different structures are used, namely a 20-Bar Planar Truss (2D), a 28-Bar Space Truss (3D), a 72-Bar Space Truss, and a 600-bar Space Truss. The numerical models of all these structures are built in MATLAB using Finite Element Method (FEM). The improved indicator detects and localises single and multiple damages in the first stage. Next, after eliminating the healthy elements, it is used in a new objective function to solve the damage quantification problem using recent optimization techniques, including Artificial Gorilla Troops Optimizer (GTO), Dingo Optimization Algorithm (DOA), African Vulture Optimization algorithm (AVOA), and Gradient-Based Optimizer (GBO). The results demonstrate that all optimization techniques can accurately predict the exact level of damage. However, GTO is the most efficient in terms of convergence. To study the effectiveness of this indicator in case of noisy data, different levels of noise are considered in the damage assessment exercises.

Today, power generation from clean and renewable resources such as wind and solar is of great salience. Smart grid technology efficiently responds to the increasing demand for electric power. Intelligent monitoring, control, and maintenance of wind energy facilities are indispensable to increase the performance and efficiency of smart grids (SGs). Integration of state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms and vision sensor networks approaches pave the way toward enhancing the wind farms’ performance. The generating power in a wind turbine farm is the most critical parameter that should be measured accurately. Produced power is highly related to weather patterns, and a new farm in a near area is also likely to have similar energy generation. Therefore, accurate and perpetual prediction models of the existing wind farms can be led to develop new stations with lower costs. The paper aims to estimate the angular velocity of turbine blades using vision sensors and signal processing. The high wind in the wind farm can cause the camera to vibrate in successive frames, and the noise in the input images can also strengthen the problem. Thanks to couples of solid computer vision algorithms, including FAST (Features from Accelerated Segment Test), SIFT (Scale-Invariant Feature Transform), SURF (Speeded Up Robust Features), BF (Brute-Force), FLANN (Fast Library for Approximate Nearest Neighbors), AE (Autoencoder), and SVM (support vector machines), this paper accurately localizes the Hub and track the presence of the Blade in consecutive frames of a video stream. The simulation results show that determining the hub location and the blade presence in sequential frames results in an accurate estimation of wind turbine angular velocity with 95.36% accuracy.

Abstract Effective appointment scheduling (EAS) is essential for the quality and patient satisfaction in hospital management. Healthcare schedulers typically refer patients to a suitable period of service before the admission call closes. The appointment date can no longer be adjusted. This research presents the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) based on the Pareto archive and NSGA-II algorithm to solve the appointment scheduling model by considering the simulation approach. Based on these two algorithms, this paper has addressed the multi-criteria method in appointment scheduling. This paper computes WOA and NSGA with various hypotheses to meet the analysis and different factors related to patients in the hospital. In the last part of the model, this paper has analyzed NSGA and WOA with three cases. Fairness policy first come first serve (FCFS) considers the most priority factor to obtain from figure to strategies optimized solution for best satisfaction results. In the proposed NSGA, the FCFS approach and the WOA approach are contrasted. Numerical results indicate that both the FCFS and WOA approaches outperform the strategy optimized by the proposed algorithm.

Humanity is currently facing immense challenges related to the reduction of CO2 emissions and satisfying energy demand whilst mitigating environmental impacts, hence, developing smart cities is one of the most important goals for every country. This paper presents a comprehensive discussion on smart city development across successful cities including London, Singapore, Barcelona, New York, Melbourne, Amsterdam, Dubai, and Helsinki, highlighting the importance of appropriate policies in overcoming barriers and creating solutions with regard to the importance of clean energy in each section. This paper focuses on three sectors: Energy, Transport, and Buildings. This research aims to illustrate fruitful pathways for smart city development based on these successful cities in using appropriate policies and strategies to overcome the relative hurdles often limiting these three important sectors in improving and achieving the necessary development for smart city status. Additionally, the stakeholder cooperation with the local government has a prominent role in carrying and executing the ideas of the politicians and the energy experts for more utilization of clean energy in different sections as a proper policy in smart city development.

In intelligent traffic control systems, the features extracted by loop detectors are insufficient to accurately impute missing data. Most of the existing imputation methods use only these extracted features, which leads to the construction of data models that cannot fulfill the required accuracy. This deficiency is the main motivation to propose an enrichment imputation method for loop detectors namely EIM-LD, in which the imputation accuracy is increased for different missing patterns and ratios by introducing a data enrichment technique using statistical multi-class labeling. It first enriches the clean data by adding a statistical multi-class label, including C1…Cn classes. Then, the class of samples in the missed-volume data is labeled using the best data model constructed from the labeled clean data by five different classifiers. Experts of the traffic control department in Isfahan city determined classes of the statistical multi-class label for n = 5 (class labels), and we also developed subclass labels (n = 20) since the number of samples in the subclass labels was sufficient. Next, the enriched data are divided into n datasets, each of them is imputed independently using various imputation methods, and their results are finally merged. To evaluate the impact of using the proposed method, the original data, including missing volumes, are first imputed without our enrichment method. Then, the proposed method’s accuracy is evaluated by considering two class labels and subclass labels. The experimental and statistical results prove that the proposed EIM-LD method can enrich the real data collected by loop detectors, by which the comparative imputation methods construct a more accurate data model. In addition, using subclass labels further enhances the imputation method’s accuracy.

Exploring unknown environments using multiple robots has numerous applications in various fields but remains a challenging task. This study proposes a novel hybrid optimization method called Hybrid Vulture-Coordinated Multi-Robot Exploration (HVCME), which combines Coordinated Multi-Robot Exploration (CME) and African Vultures Optimization Algorithm (AVOA) to optimize the construction of a finite map in multi-robot exploration. We compared HVCME with four other similar algorithms using three performance measures: run time, percentage of the explored area, and the number of times the method failed to complete a run. The experimental results show that HVCME outperforms the other four methods, demonstrating its effectiveness in optimizing the construction of a finite map in an unknown indoor environment.

The identification of biomarkers plays a crucial role in personalized medicine, both in the clinical and research settings. However, the contrast between predictive and prognostic biomarkers can be challenging due to the overlap between the two. A prognostic biomarker predicts the future outcome of cancer, regardless of treatment, and a predictive biomarker predicts the effectiveness of a therapeutic intervention. Misclassifying a prognostic biomarker as predictive (or vice versa) can have serious financial and personal consequences for patients. To address this issue, various statistical and machine learning approaches have been developed. The aim of this study is to present an in-depth analysis of recent advancements, trends, challenges, and future prospects in biomarker identification. A systematic search was conducted using PubMed to identify relevant studies published between 2017 and 2023. The selected studies were analyzed to better understand the concept of biomarker identification, evaluate machine learning methods, assess the level of research activity, and highlight the application of these methods in cancer research and treatment. Furthermore, existing obstacles and concerns are discussed to identify prospective research areas. We believe that this review will serve as a valuable resource for researchers, providing insights into the methods and approaches used in biomarker discovery and identifying future research opportunities.

Finding relevant information from biological data is a critical issue for the study of disease diagnosis, especially when an enormous number of biological features are involved. Intentionally, the feature selection can be an imperative preprocessing step before the classification stage. Equilibrium optimizer (EO) is a recently established metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the principle of dynamic source and sink models when measuring the equilibrium states. In this research, a new variant of EO called general learning equilibrium optimizer (GLEO) is proposed as a wrapper feature selection method. This approach adopts a general learning strategy to help the particles to evade the local areas and improve the capability of finding promising regions. The proposed GLEO aims to identify a subset of informative biological features among a large number of attributes. The performance of the GLEO algorithm is validated on 16 biological datasets, where nine of them represent high dimensionality with a smaller number of instances. The results obtained show the excellent performance of GLEO in terms of fitness value, accuracy, and feature size in comparison with other metaheuristic algorithms.

Cardiovascular disease is a substantial cause of mortality and morbidity in the world. In clinical data analytics, it is a great challenge to predict heart disease survivor. Data mining transforms huge amounts of raw data generated by the health industry into useful information that can help in making informed decisions. Various studies proved that significant features play a key role in improving performance of machine learning models. This study analyzes the heart failure survivors from the dataset of 299 patients admitted in hospital. The aim is to find significant features and effective data mining techniques that can boost the accuracy of cardiovascular patient’s survivor prediction. To predict patient’s survival, this study employs nine classification models: Decision Tree (DT), Adaptive boosting classifier (AdaBoost), Logistic Regression (LR), Stochastic Gradient classifier (SGD), Random Forest (RF), Gradient Boosting classifier (GBM), Extra Tree Classifier (ETC), Gaussian Naive Bayes classifier (G-NB) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). The imbalance class problem is handled by Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE). Furthermore, machine learning models are trained on the highest ranked features selected by RF. The results are compared with those provided by machine learning algorithms using full set of features. Experimental results demonstrate that ETC outperforms other models and achieves 0.9262 accuracy value with SMOTE in prediction of heart patient’s survival.

Cameras are being used everywhere for the safety and security of citizens in different countries. Using a machine to detect humans in a photo or a video frame is a very complicated and challenging task. Various techniques have been developed for this purpose, which mainly rely on Artificial Intelligence. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review and analysis of the literatures from a descriptive perspective, which is its main differentiator from the existing survey papers in this area. Firstly, the vision-based human detection techniques and classifiers are elucidated in conjunction with the variants of feature extraction techniques. Secondly, various pros and cons of such techniques are discussed. Then, an investigation has been conducted and reported based on the state-of-the-art human detection descriptors (e.g. Log-Average Miss Rate and accuracy). Although techniques such as Viola-Jones and Speeded-Up Robust Features can detect objects in real-time and overcome Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) limitations, they are still sensitive to illuminated conditions. Other techniques such as SIFT, Bag of Words, Orthogonal Moments, and Histogram of oriented Gradients provide other interesting benefits which include insensitivity to occlusion and clutters, simplicity, low-order element construction and invariance to illuminated conditions; nevertheless, they are computationally expensive and sensitive to image rotation. A meticulous review along similar lines revealed that the Deformable Part-based Model performs relatively better due to its ability to deal with particular pose variations and multiple views, occlusion handling (partial) and is application-free while its counterparts focus on only a single aspect. This article highlights and provides a brief description of each available data-sets for human detection research. Various use-cases of human detection systems are also elaborated. Finally, various conclusions are derived based on the conducted review followed by recommendations for future directions and possibilities to further improve the speed and accuracy of human detection systems.

Recently, a new strong optimization algorithm called marine predators algorithm (MPA) has been proposed for tackling the single-objective optimization problems and could dramatically fulfill good outcomes in comparison to the other compared algorithms. Those dramatic outcomes, in addition to our recently-proposed strategies for helping meta-heuristic algorithms in fulfilling better outcomes for the multi-objective optimization problems, motivate us to make a comprehensive study to see the performance of MPA alone and with those strategies for those optimization problems. Specifically, This paper proposes four variants of the marine predators’ algorithm (MPA) for solving multi-objective optimization problems. The first version, called the multi-objective marine predators’ algorithm (MMPA) is based on the behavior of marine predators in finding their prey. In the second version, a novel strategy called dominance strategy-based exploration-exploitation (DSEE) recently-proposed is effectively incorporated with MMPA to relate the exploration and exploitation phase of MPA to the dominance of the solutions—this version is called M-MMPA. DSEE counts the number of dominated solutions for each solution—the solutions with high dominance undergo an exploitation phase; the others with small dominance undergo the exploration phase. The third version integrates M-MMPA with a novel strategy called Gaussian-based mutation, which uses the Gaussian distribution-based exploration and exploitation strategy to search for the optimal solution. The fourth version uses the Nelder-Mead simplex method with M-MMPA (M-MMPA-NMM) at the start of the optimization process to construct a front of the non-dominated solutions that will help M-MMPA to find more good solutions. The effectiveness of the four versions is validated on a large set of theoretical and practical problems. For all the cases, the proposed algorithm and its variants are shown to be superior to a number of well-known multi-objective optimization algorithms.

The proliferation of user-generated content on social media has made opinion mining an arduous job. As a microblogging platform, Twitter is being used to collect views about products, trends, and politics. Sentiment analysis is a technique used to analyze the attitude, emotions and opinions of different people towards anything, and it can be carried out on tweets to analyze public opinion on news, policies, social movements, and personalities. By employing Machine Learning models, opinion mining can be performed without reading tweets manually. Their results could assist governments and businesses in rolling out policies, products, and events. Seven Machine Learning models are implemented for emotion recognition by classifying tweets as happy or unhappy. With an in-depth comparative performance analysis, it was observed that proposed voting classifier(LR-SGD) with TF-IDF produces the most optimal result with 79% accuracy and 81% F1 score. To further validate stability of the proposed approach on two more datasets, one binary and other multi-class dataset and achieved robust results.

As research in alternate energy sources is growing, solar radiation is catching the eyes of the research community immensely. Since solar energy generation depends on uncontrollable natural variables, without proper forecasting, this energy source cannot be trusted. For this forecasting, the use of machine learning algorithms is one of the best choices. This paper proposed an optimized solar radiation forecasting ensemble model consisting of pre-processing and training ensemble phases. The training ensemble phase works on an advanced sine cosine algorithm (ASCA) using Newton’s laws of gravity and motion for objects (agents). ASCA uses sine and cosine functions to update the agent’s position/velocity components by considering its mass. The training ensemble model is then developed using the k-nearest neighbors (KNN) regression. The performance of the proposed ensemble model is measured using a dataset from Kaggle (Solar Radiation Prediction, Task from NASA Hackathon). The proposed ASCA algorithm is evaluated in comparison with the Particle Swarm Optimizer (PSO), Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Squirrel Search Algorithm (SSA), Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO), Hybrid Greedy Sine Cosine Algorithm with Differential Evolution (HGSCADE), Hybrid Modified Sine Cosine Algorithm with Cuckoo Search Algorithm (HMSCACSA), Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA), Chimp Optimization Algorithm (ChOA), and Slime Mould Algorithm (SMA). Obtained results of the proposed ensemble model are compared with those of state-of-the-art models, and significant superiority of the proposed ensemble model is confirmed using statistical analysis such as ANOVA and Wilcoxon’s rank-sum tests.

The development and deployment of an effective wind speed forecasting technology can improve the safety and stability of power systems with significant wind penetration. Due to the wind’s unpredictable and unstable qualities, accurate forecasting of wind speed and power is extremely challenging. Several algorithms were proposed for this purpose to improve the level of forecasting reliability. The Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network is a common method for making predictions based on time series data. This paper proposed a machine learning algorithm, called Adaptive Dynamic Particle Swarm Algorithm (AD-PSO) combined with Guided Whale Optimization Algorithm (Guided WOA), for wind speed ensemble forecasting. The AD-PSO-Guided WOA algorithm selects the optimal hyperparameters value of the LSTM deep learning model for forecasting of wind speed. In experiments, a wind power forecasting dataset is employed to predict hourly power generation up to forty-eight hours ahead at seven wind farms. This case study is taken from the Kaggle Global Energy Forecasting Competition 2012 in wind forecasting. The results demonstrated that the AD-PSO-Guided WOA algorithm provides high accuracy and outperforms several comparative optimization and deep learning algorithms. Different tests’ statistical analysis, including Wilcoxon’s rank-sum and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), confirms the accuracy of the presented algorithm.

In the current century, organizations face ever increasing dynamic ecosystems and are constantly devising strategies to meet their challenges. These include the implementation of the right organizational structure and avoid project schedule delays to achieve projects’ success. Unfortunately, the classification of significant project success dimensions in the R&D environment is still an elusive concept. This study adopts a multi-dimensional qualitative and quantitative approach to explore the critical dimensions of organizational structure and schedule management that enhance or hinder the project success in R&D organizations. In Phase 1, a Delphi Study is conducted, results of reliability and other tests are the input of Phase 2. On the basis of these tests, variables have been selected for the next phase or final questionnaire. In Phase 2, through a survey of 285 responses in a R&D environment, the proposed framework is validated by conducting face, content and construct validity. The results indicated that formalization, specialization, differentiation, coordination mechanism, decentralization and authority of managers have a significant effect on the schedule management and successful execution of R&D projects; whereas, centralization and departmentalization do not correlate strongly. The results also imply that decentralized organizational structures (organic) are more preferable than centralized structures (mechanistic) for the execution of R&D projects when proposed timelines are to be met timely. The proposed framework will act as a supporting mechanism for engineering managers to deal with organizational structure and schedule management factors in a highly uncertain R&D environment where projects deviate frequently from their anticipated timeline.
