Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, telomeraz aktivitesinin nöroblastomlu hastaların klinik özellikleri ve sağkalımı üzerindeki etkisini araştırmaktı.Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu çalışma, Çukurova Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Pediatrik Onkoloji Anabilim Dalı'nda 2011-2019 yılları arasında nöroblastom tanısı konulan 87 hastanın daha önce alınan patoloji preparatlarında telomeraz aktivitesi incelenerek yapılmıştır.Bulgular: Çalışmamıza 46'sı erkek (%52.9) ve 41'i kadın (%47.1) olmak üzere toplam 87 hasta dahil edildi. Tanı anındaki ortanca yaş 3.0 (0.08-15) yıldı. Çalışmaya alınan 23 (%26.4) hastada telomeraz aktivitesi mevcutken 64 (%73.6) hastada telomeraz aktivitesi yoktu. 8 yıla kadar telomeraz aktivitesi olan hastaların genel sağkalımı (OS) %84 iken olaysız sağkalım (EFS) %56 idi. Telomeraz aktivitesi olmayan hastalar 8 yıla kadar %93 OS'ye sahipken, EFS %70 idi. Telomeraz aktivitesi olan ve olmayan hastalar arasında cinsiyet, yaş, evre, risk grubu, relaps, mycn amplifikasyonu, OS ve EFS açısından anlamlı bir ilişki yoktu.Sonuç: Bu çalışmada, telomeraz aktivitesi ile nöroblastom hastalarının klinik özellikleri ve sağkalımları arasında anlamlı bir fark bulunmadı. Daha fazla sayıda hastanın dahil edileceği prospektif çalışmalar telomeraz aktivitesinin nöroblastom hastalarının prognozu üzerine etkisini daha net bir şekilde ortaya koyacaktır., Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of telomerase activity on clinical characteristics and survival of patients with neuroblastoma.Materials and Methods: This study was carried out by examining telomerase activity in previously taken pathology preparations of 87 patients who were diagnosed with neuroblastoma between 2011 and 2019 in the Pediatric Oncology Department of Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine. Results: Totally 87 patients, 46 males (52.9%) and 41 females (47.1%), were included in our study. Median age at the time of diagnosis was 3.0 (0.08-15) years. Twenty-three (26.4%) patients included in the study had telomerase activity, 64 (73.6%) had no telomerase activity. Overall survival (OS) of patients with telomerase activity up to 8 years were 84%, while event-free survival (EFS) was 56%. Patients without telomerase activity had a 93% OS for up to 8 years, while EFS was 70%. There was no significant relationship between patients with or without telomerase activity in terms of sex, age, stage, risk group, relapse, myc- n amplification, OS and EFS. Conclusions: In this study, no significant difference was found between telomerase activity and clinical features and survival of neuroblastoma patients. Prospective studies involving larger numbers of patients will more clearly demonstrate the impact of telomerase activity on the prognosis of patients with neuroblastoma.

Objectives: This study aims to report the outcomes of patients with Behcet’s disease (BD) with cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) due to BD compared to patients with CVT due to other causes and to discuss the treatment options. Patients and methods: Files of 47 patients admitted to our outpatient clinic for CVT between January 2007 and November 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were divided into two groups; group 1 included 21 CVT patients with BD (9 males, 12 females; mean age 47±12 years; range 27 to 69 years) and group 2 included 26 CVT patients without BD (11 males, 15 females; mean age 45±16 years; range 25 to 79 years). We collected data for diagnosis for BD and CVT, duration of all medications, functional system involvement, baseline Expanded Disability Status Scale scores, modified Rankin Scale scores at follow-up, and localizations of lesions in brain magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance venography. Results: Mean follow-up duration was four years in group 1 and two years in group 2. There was no significant difference between the groups regarding age, sex, neurological symptoms/findings and baseline Expanded Disability Status Scale scores. Localizations of occluded sinus in group 1 and group 2 were similar. For acute CVT, patients were treated with intravenous high dose prednisolone in group 1 and with anticoagulant in group 2. Follow-up modified Rankin Scale score was 0 in both groups. Conclusion: Our study revealed similar clinical and radiological findings in CVT patients with or without BD. Although medications used for treatment were different between the groups, treatment responses were good in both groups. Treatment with prednisolone may be sufficient and anticoagulation therapy may not be necessary for acute CVT attacks in BD.

Introduction: Acute infarcts in posterior circulation (AIPC) have been reported 16-39.8% of ischemic stroke patients in previous studies. The most frequent cause of AIPC was embolism from cardio-aortic, vertebra-basilar atherosclerosis or dissection, followed by large-artery atherosclerosis (LAA), small vessel disease and other causes. The aim of this study was to determine the etiologic subtypes of AIPC in our stroke registry.Methods: We reviewed the charts of 554 patients who were admitted with acute ischemic stroke between the dates January 2011 and August 2014. The demographic data, the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores at admission and detailed investigations to determine etiologic focus of stroke were recorded. We determined etiologic stroke subtypes using the automated Causative Classification System (CCS). The modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores were recorded in follow-up periodResults: A total of 184 (40.6%) patients with AIPC (89 females [48.4%] and 95 males [51.6%]; mean age, 70.6±12.5 [25-92] years) and 268 (59.3%) patients with acute infarcts in anterior circulation (AIAC) (133 females [49.6%] and 135 males [50.4%]; mean age, 69.3±13.7 [28-103] years) were included in the study. History of diabetes and previous stroke were significantly more common in patients with AIPC compared to the patients with AIAC (p=0.04, p=0.009). The mean admission NIHSS score was 6.4± 4.6 (0-26) in patients with AIPC (Group 1) and 6.7±4.3 (0-23) in patients with AIAC (Group 2) (p=0.96). cardio -aortic embolism was more common in Group 2 compared to Group 1, but not significant (p = 0.12). There was no significant difference in the mean C-reactive protein (CRP) level between two groups (p=0.23). Mortality in hospital was 14.7% (n=27) in Group 1 and 8.6% (n=23) in group 2 (p = 0.04). The median mRS was 3 (0-6) in patients with AIPC and 2 (0-6) in patients with AIAC during follow up period (p=0.79). Recurrent stroke occurred in 1 (0.5%) patient with AIPC and 8 (3%) patients with AIAC (p=0.07).Conclusion: AIPC was found in 40.6% of patients with acute ischemic stroke in this registry. Cardio-aortic embolism was the most common cause of AIPC group. Diabetes and previous stroke history appear to be the major risk factors for AIPC. Mortality in hospital was significantly higher in AIPC group.

Aim: To investigate whether prostatic inflammation affects the contractile responses of prostate tissue and then whether melatonin has any restorative effect on the contractile responses in a rat model of bacterial prostatitis at early stages. Materials and methods: We evaluated the nerve-evoked, adrenergic agonist-induced or cholinergic agonist-induced contractions of isolated prostate tissue at 24 and 72 h after intraurethrally instilled Escherichia coli-treatment. We also analyzed the histological changes in the prostate. Secondarily, we investigated the effect of melatonin pretreatment (7 days, 10 mg kg–1 day–1) on the contractile responses and the histopathologic changes. Results: The degrees of acute inflammatory cell infiltration, acinar changes, and interstitial fibrosis in the prostate glands indicated the development of acute prostatitis at 24 or 72 h after bacterial inoculation. These inflammatory changes were more pronounced at 72 h. Bacterial prostatitis attenuated contractile responses to electrical field stimulation, phenylephrine, or carbachol. The impairment in the contractions was more prominent at 72 h. Melatonin treatment reduced the pathologic changes and partially restored the contractile responses at 72 h of inflammation. Conclusion: Prostatic inflammation caused a diminution in the contractile mechanism of the prostate tissue and melatonin partially restored the contractile responses and histopathologic changes. Melatonin can be useful as an adjuvant to the main therapies for prostatitis to reduce the contractility problems. Echinococcosis is a parasitic disease frequently occurring in societies where agriculture and raising animals are common. In Turkey, it is more commonly observed in eastern and middle Anatolia and in Marmara and Trakya regions. While there is a high rate of occurrence in the liver and lungs, Echinococcosis can occasionally be present in other tissues and organs. In this study which was carried out in the Cukurova region, we found 962 echinococcosis cases in a ten year period. Of these, 134 (13.9%) were located outside the liver and the lung. Our aim was to determine the rate of unusual location of echinococcosis cases in our region and draw attention to the issue.
