En este libro se hace un recorrido panorámico sobre el amplio trabajo de investigación social realizado recientemente en el país acerca de las relaciones de género y el desempeño de los hombres en distintas esferas de la vida —sin pretender abarcar la totalidad de los estudios existentes—. El interés central es dar cuenta de los alcances de las transformaciones en las relaciones de género ocurridas en México, así como en las actitudes y las prácticas de los hombres en esta materia. Se trata de visibilizar lo anterior, pero también de hacer notar las resistencias masculinas frente a tales avances y las repercusiones de ello en la vida de las mujeres y de las familias. Para eso, se establece la necesidad de diseccionar el estudio del desempeño de los hombres en distintos dominios o dimensiones de las relaciones de género: ejercicio de la sexualidad, cumplimiento de la función proveedora, participación en el trabajo doméstico y de cuidado, y violencia masculina en los hogares.

Un grupo de especialistas en estudios de género abordan en este volumen una diversidad de temas con variados enfoques: feminismos, educación con perspectiva de género desde la infancia, no binarismo y mirada trans, luchas por los derechos LGBTI y su registro histórico, construcción social de la masculinidad, escrituras de mujeres, hackfeminismo, labores de cuidado y presencia de las mujeres en el espacio público, entre otros. En conjunto los textos invitan a pensar el género desde diferentes ángulos y perspectivas teóricas.

This book shows the importance of understanding how gender influences views on teen pregnancy amongst working and lower middle class Mexican adolescents. It demonstrates how teenagers negotiate dominant gendered discourses related to sexuality, contraception and parenthood, considering if and when discourses of gender, sexuality, femininity and masculinity may be shifting and how. Overall, most teenage boys in this study still refer to their active sexual practices and their role as provider in the family to define their reproductive identities, while young women seem to comply with dominant moral expectations of sexually passive femininity, defined mainly through motherhood. However, the findings also highlight how resistance to dominant gender discourses can take place, particularly with recognition of teenage girls as sexual beings with needs and desires. Although the findings generated by this study are from 1994–1997, they remain relevant, given that in 2017, one in five pregnancies in Mexico was from a teenage mother.

Esta obra es el fruto escrito de un seminario que conmemoró los cuarenta y los treinta años del CES y del PIEM, respectivamente. El libro se articula en tres partes. En la primera,'Performances y género', se presentan investigaciones que abordan dos casos de estudio de masculinidad trans y homosexual en contextos culturales y épocas diferentes. Los tres capítulos de la segunda parte,'Violencia y género', se acercan al tema de la violencia desde el ángulo de las relaciones conyugales y de pareja, del consumo de alcohol, de los homicidios y del crimen organizado en espacios nacionales e internacionales. En la tercera parte,'Temporalidades y género', dos estudios se vuelcan, por un lado, hacia las interrupciones escolares en jóvenes y, por otro, hacia el uso diferencial del tiempo en niños y niñas al dedicarse a actividades productivas y no productivas.

La obra presenta las formas en que, desde distintas disciplinas, contextos e instituciones sociales, reflexionamos sobre la definición de'juventudes'a partir de sus propios parámetros culturales, sociales, políticos y económicos. Los trabajos aquí expuestos, a la vez que muestran la falta de andamiajes teóricos-conceptuales para estudiar lo juvenil en los géneros, son aportaciones de gran valor.

How has globalization worked for women working on the frontlines of neoliberalism on the Mexico-US border? This border divides'US'from'Others,'and produces social inequalities that form a site where marginalized border women encounter the othering power of neoliberalism and confront inequalities of gender and class. Within this context, a critical comparison of socially similar women, working either in export production industries or in small-scale commerce and low-level services in Ciudad Juárez, reveals how export factory work constrains women's empowerment at home – as well as the wages they earn and the well-being of their households. This volume challenges the neoliberal rationale of'empowering'women to support market growth, and argues instead for understanding women's empowerment as a process of transformation from disempowerment by gender power relations to challenging masculinist domination in households and, ultimately, the economy and society. Because structures of gender and globalization are mutually constituted, women's empowerment as gender democracy is integral to producing alternative, democratic globalization. Using a feminist methodology that gives attention to the standpoint of women located on the downside of social hierarchies and takes into account strategically diverse points of view, this study develops analysis to counter neoliberal globalization as it touches down in the lives of ordinary women and men on the border and beyond.

History is not just about great personalities, wars, and revolutions; it is also about the subtle aspects of more ordinary matters. On a day-to-day basis the aspects of life that most preoccupied people in late eighteenth- through mid nineteenth-century Mexico were not the political machinations of generals or politicians but whether they themselves could make a living, whether others accorded them the respect they deserved, whether they were safe from an abusive husband, whether their wives and children would obey them—in short, the minutiae of daily life. Sonya Lipsett-Rivera's Gender and the Negotiation of Daily Life in Mexico, 1750–1856 explores the relationships between Mexicans, their environment, and one another, as well as their negotiation of the cultural values of everyday life. By examining the value systems that governed Mexican thinking of the period, Lipsett-Rivera examines the ephemeral daily experiences and interactions of the people and illuminates how gender and honor systems governed these quotidian negotiations. Bodies and the built environment were inscribed with cultural values, and the relationship of Mexicans to and between space and bodies determined the way ordinary people acted out their culture.

Indian freedmen and their descendants have garnered much public and scholarly attention, but women's roles have largely been absent from that discussion. Now a scholar who gained an insider's perspective into the Black Seminole community in Texas and Mexico offers a rare and vivid picture of these women and their contributions. In Dreaming with the Ancestors, Shirley Boteler Mock explores the role that Black Seminole women have played in shaping and perpetuating a culture born of African roots and shaped by southeastern Native American and Mexican influences.Mock reveals a unique maroon culture, forged from an eclectic mixture of religious beliefs and social practices. At its core is an amalgam of African-derived traditions kept alive by women. The author interweaves documentary research with extensive interviews she conducted with leading Black Seminole women to uncover their remarkable history. She tells how these women nourished their families and held fast to their Afro-Seminole language — even as they fled slavery, endured relocation, and eventually sought new lives in new lands. Of key importance were the'warrior women'— keepers of dreams and visions that bring to life age-old African customs.Featuring more than thirty illustrations and maps, including historic photographs never before published, Dreaming with the Ancestors combines scholarly analysis with human interest to open a new window on both African American and American Indian history and culture.

Gender was a fluid potential, not a fixed category, before the Spaniards came to Mesoamerica. Childhood training and ritual shaped, but did not set, adult gender, which could encompass third genders and alternative sexualities as well as'male'and'female.'At the height of the Classic period, Maya rulers presented themselves as embodying the entire range of gender possibilities, from male through female, by wearing blended costumes and playing male and female roles in state ceremonies. This landmark book offers the first comprehensive description and analysis of gender and power relations in prehispanic Mesoamerica from the Formative Period Olmec world (ca. 1500-500 BC) through the Postclassic Maya and Aztec societies of the sixteenth century AD. Using approaches from contemporary gender theory, Rosemary Joyce explores how Mesoamericans created human images to represent idealized notions of what it meant to be male and female and to depict proper gender roles. She then juxtaposes these images with archaeological evidence from burials, house sites, and body ornaments, which reveals that real gender roles were more fluid and variable than the stereotyped images suggest.

Kaja Finkler explores the relationship between patterns of social interaction, cultural expectations, and gender ideologies. In Women in Pain, she examines the nature of sickness and its interaction with issues about gender and gender relations from both a historical and contemporary perspective.
