This article works to understand what happens to women working in the public sector, especially women in traditionally male occupations, such as the police. Moreover, in Latin America and in most developing countries, it is crucial to examine the interaction between precarious jobs and gender discrimination. The article finds that gender discrimination is accentuated in organizations with precarious labor conditions. To illustrate this problem, it examines the police force in Mexico. This is a crucial case study for understanding the phenomena: Mexico is an extremely violent country, but conditions in the police force are highly precarious for workers. Moreover, this labor precariousness has an even greater impact on female police officers. In addition to working in a profession characterized by instability, they also face structural barriers to the performance of their duties and greater obstacles to entry and promotion within the organization. Furthermore, women face the glass ceiling as well as a hostile work culture that expresses itself through discrimination. Este articulo analiza que sucede con las mujeres que trabajan en ocupaciones del sector publico tradicionalmente masculinas, como la policia. Ademas, en America Latina y en la mayoria de los paises en desarrollo, es clave examinar la interaccion entre empleos precarios y discriminacion por motivos de genero. De hecho, encontramos que esta ultima se acentua en organizaciones con condiciones laborales precarias. Para ilustrar este problema examinamos la organizacion policial en Mexico. Este es un caso de estudio clave para entender el fenomeno: Mexico es un pais extremadamente violento, no obstante, las condiciones laborales de la policia son precarias. In 1987, Elizabeth II amended the statutes of the Order of the Garter to permit the admission of Ladies Companions, '. . . to do away with sex discrimination.' The Order had been established in the 1340s; membership was limited to only certain males: twenty-four knights, the king, and his eldest son. The statutes did not give women an official place in the Order, but from its inception they appear to have had an associate role and to have participated in its ceremonies. Richard II encouraged participation of women in the Order; Henry VII was the last monarch to include women; thereafter, Henry VIII allowed the custom to fall into abeyance. When Elizabeth II assumed the throne, a power vacuum was created by the incapacity of her largely female Privy Chamber. Elizabeth I had to find a strategy for establishing her authority over the realm, the court, and the absolutely male bastion of prestige within the court. Her solution can be inferred from an analysis of the most notable features of her tenure as sovereign of the Order of the Garter. These are ceremonial, historical, and behavioral - her personal style of presidency.

A female employee's response to sexism in the workplace is discussed, and four experts offer their advice. The employee must decide whether to send a memo about the treatment of female employees to the male CEO. One argument for sending the memo is that it is one way in which the CEO can identify a problem. However, sexism probably would not exist unless the CEO gave tacit approval to it. The alternatives to sending the memo include finding other employees who have experienced the same problem and taking a group approach to solving the problem.

The contingencies of corporate legal practice result in women in-house attorneys failing to get hired and promoted at the same rate as men attorneys. Since men are more likely to interact with clients while working at private law firms, they are more likely to be recruited by corporate legal departments. Women do not acquire the kinds of specialized expertise demanded by manufacturing corporations as readily as men. The disparities are due to organizational structures rather than differences in credentials. A study of 34 men and 34 women attorneys in 12 corporate legal departments is presented.

Women performers in local rock and roll groups are generally treated as sex objects rather than as serious musicians, both by audiences and other band members. In a survey of fifteen women musicians, respondents initially reported acceptance and parity with male band members, but on further reflection they complained of a lack of respect for their musical talents.
